    The clean(ish) audio for this gig vlog came from a Zoom H6 that acted as overheads for the drums, then use of all 4 channels of inputs on the Zoom including a bass drum mic, an xlr out from the bass guitar, an AKG-214 taped to Zac's music stand, and an SM-58 draped over the guitar amp. The gain was set wrong on the SM-58, so I couldn't use it, which is why the guitar is so quiet.

      Just got an H6 somewhat recently for this kind of thing. Loving it so far, and was wondering what you used to record. It is surprisingly well suited like a drum overhead mic, which is perfect for my drums lol. Cool

      No, I've really had that happen. I had a panic situation, where we needed three songs in an hour. The pianist and I agreed on some chord progressions, I went off to write horn licks, bandleader to write lyrics. It was just "as fast as the pen can move" time. We mostly made it, but when I heard the recording back, I had that "hey that was cool... did I write that?" moment. It was one of those things I put to paper without much real-world testing. It worked out well in practice. I was a little bit surprised it had been _that_ successful.

    • @aarongrooves
      @aarongrooves 5 років тому +90

      It seems insane, but it's really no different from reading English. If you spent thousands of hours from a young age, you'd get good at it. For example, you don't have to practice reading youtube comments before understanding them. But a beginning reader *would* have to slow down and figure out this text (imagine your average 7 or 8 year-old). It's the same for reading music, and with enough practice and regularity, you could arrive at the same point with sheet music.

    Question for a future Q+A: With the amount of gigs and performances and just general playing you do, how many of these songs do you actually retain, if any? Like, is practice just a brain dump session where you pour hours into learning the songs, only to forget everything so you can work on the next performance, or are there songs you've learned from previous performances that you still like to play today?

      In my limited experience it is often the stuff that you get paid to do that you forget, unless it’s stuff that you’ve had to invest heavily in, like stuff you wrote or if you’re trying to get a band off the ground, or if you’ve slowly built up a busking repertoire over the course of several years. I’ve played a fair few weddings in my team and the only things I know I could bust out from the most popular wedding numbers is Pachelbel’s Canon, It’s All About You and maybe Thinking Out Loud, all the rest would be picked up in the rehearsal or on the day of the event. Even then, I enjoyed my time as a part time wedding musician as a high schooler, the fact that you had to pick stuff up in less than three playthroughs was always pretty exciting

    Why do you think that video game music is so underrepresented with professional musicians? Every video game concert I know is always the same three tracks from Mario Bros, Zelda and Kirby, sometimes iconic main themes like Fire Emblem or Halo or something of the sort.
    There is sooo much good video game music out there and musicians rarely care enough to interpret it; this is actually one of the more nuanced portrayals that I've seen. It's like if you went to classical concerts and always heard Beethoven's Fifth or those operas that Bugs Bunny cartoons made.

    I find this mega inspiring. I think many of us here have sat through many run throughs similar to this before the gig with the MD. Adam manages to capture and share all the details so brilliantly in these kind of vlog on the gig videos, whilst actually doing the gig (and smashing it to pieces!) Blows my mind. It must take a lot of effort putting these videos together, seeing this community here on youtube, its hugely appreciated. I find it really inspiring, motivating and entertaining. Thanks Adam for being you dude!

    I've played this video repeatedly to listen to the music. With several of these I wish there was a long version. Especially the Civ2 music. It's just awesome to hear that music skillfully played with physical instruments.
    It's funny because at first I had difficulty recognizing things, and I often have difficulty with things being different than I'm used to.

      Agree... didn't know Civ2 had some sick tunes, only played Civ5 and its music is great

    The editing is top notch in this from the rehearsal to the actual ceremony wow just loved how everything was done. The arrangement was amazing, the one leading came through hard on this one.

    This is one of my favourite video of yours, for the music but also the immaculate editing. This legit feels like a movie about a gig where we see the creative process behind the tiny details of the performance WHILE the performance actually happens.

    Being a huge fan of Overwatch in general plus Carolina Ravassa (voice actor of Sombra), I actually got a little emotional seeing her walk on stage while this rendition played. Nicely done!
