As an aspiring music producer for the last 20 years, Rick Rubin has always been an idol and influence to me in a spiritual sense. He works purely on instinct coupled with experience. Part of being a great producer in my opinion is understanding people and their strengths as well as their flaws and getting the best performance possible through the beauty of their imperfections coupled with their talent and their presence in the moment. I think that Rick figured that out a long time ago. He is one of the all-time greatest music producers in history and has done it in several different genre's which is a testament to his approach. I also would like to say this is not only the best documentary I've ever seen by far on Rick Rubin, but one of the best on anything I've ever seen period. Well done.

The only person who "hated" him realized it was only due to his own young, egotistical lead singer attitude. But Rick is a full-on guru who acted as a mediator between band mates. These are the same people who made these new rappers like "island boys" famous. The ragged and weak way Johnny Cash sings Hurt makes me cry every time. You can hear the decades of pain and struggle in his voice creating such a viceral emotional response.
OMG, YES YOU HIT IT OUT OF THE BALL PARK ON WHAT YOU SAID.. i also tear up on that version of the song because you can see both June and Johnnys life winding to a close. Its beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time..

I've absolutely adored Mr Rubin for so very long, primarily due to what he did for one of my idols Mr Johnny Cash (May he rest peacefully) So to see him starting to get the credit he truly deserves more & more in recent years warms my heart. The fact that younger generations are continuing to discover him is also just wonderful to see.
The man is a legend, and if I could record with anybody it would be him. I met him once 20 years ago when he was scouting a band that I was the roadie for, he walked into the venue unknown and unannounced. I recognized him, but barely anyone else did. Without calling him out, I asked him what he thought of the band, he said something about liking their energy or vide or something like that and that was it. I told the band after the set that he was there. They ended up signing with Epitaph.
This was better than watching Behind The Music. Fantastic work here. Thank you for putting this documentary together to help change perspectives. As an artist, dancer, singer, writer, photographer, and sculpter, I'm never quite sure where to put my focus. Lately I've been meditating more than anything and from the looks of this video and Rick's process, I believe I'm on a better track now than in the past. I cried at the end because I recently came to the realization that heart comes before head. Thank you again.
As a creative I can honestly say we all struggle with too many ideas that clutter our thinking. This is very refreshing. Clearing the mind to get things done. The format of editing on this doc is fantastic. Excellent work. Left me wanting more.
I wasn't aware of the positive influence Rick Rubin has on the music industry and world. Great video and beautifully told, I am definitely implementing many of his ideas, insights and theories into my life. Rick is an icon and role model to me.
This is superb, thanks for putting it together. I bought 'Radio' in '85 and forgot it said "Reduced by Rick Rubin". That always tickled me. The bloke's a living legend.
Rick maintains the purity of music as an art. He brings these artists back to the reason they started in the first place by removing the meta of being a CeLeBrItY. He is an enlightened individual
I’m glad he’s grown since his time with The Beastie Boys, he was not a good person to them pushing out one member, a woman with his desire to make the band a frat act, then tried to get Mike D out of the band as well. The fact that they left him and def jam right after License to Ill. Really does say a lot who he used to be.
I just love that first picture of Rick on his parents bed 😍This was around the time he was just getting into hip-hop and shows someone comfortable in his individuality.
This is a great biography. Thank you for taking your time and creating this. Rick Rubin is God's gift to music. This video shows why and how he made it. He has an infinite level of talent, and is incredibly humble. Legend.
Shit he might be unknown to most of today's youth, but us OG's definitely remember him from his days with the Beastie Boys, then taking Jay to the next level, and working with a who's who of pretty much every conceivable genre you can fathom. Dude's a legend.
I think, if some of the youth who would like to do a thing that will stay in a culture, will be remembered, Rick Rubin is the guy to make it happen no matter what, if there is shit to reduce, Rick Rubin is the guy to reduced

Not loyal to the Beastie Boys...at all. Exploited them and demanded a follow up to Liscense to Ill after over-touring them, and wanted to give them 10% of the profits of a movie he wanted to make of them. Of course he'd want to project a loyal image, but he was far from loyal. Keep reading. Things, and people, aren't always what they seem.
In a testament to Rick’s power, even just seeing the section on him and Johnny Cash’s work made me start to tear up. Those six albums back to back are an absolutely transcendental experience.
Watching this was really cool, I’ve always loved Rick and my dad worked for him on college as his personal assistant, he literally raised his dogs but my dad knows nothing about music, so being able to see this from the point of both music and personality is really cool
Really sounds like Rick is amazing at taking the pressure of artists who is creatively "blocked". People who reach success can struggle with the percieved expecation of following-up. Rick being a lifelong meditator really seems able to control or atleast calm these angsty feelings and just remind people of what matters. Like don't make an album with the goal of winning another grammy, just because you already have one. Make the music you wanna make.
im so proud to be a producer, even tho i haven't gotten anywhere in this journey, even tho I've made very little money from it, even tho i still have a long way to go I'm just proud that i posses this skill of creating something so amazing called music. even if i die unsuccessful i wanna keep making music forever.

@@MrJackassz I watched the link you provided. Even in that link, people are praising Rick Ruben. The only person who "hated" him realized it was only due to his own young, egotistical lead singer attitude. But Rick is a full-on guru who acted as a mediator between band mates. When they were on the verge of breaking up the band, Rick got them in studio working together and doing good music. So... like... how TF did you come to your incorrect conclusion that he's a bum? 🤔
@@themaggattack hes a bum who shows up after all the hard work is done by the band, does a few tweaks and puts his hand wide out for a check. These are the same people who made these new rappers like "island boys" famous. The bands say he would just show up and sit on the couch and fall asleep half the time and they were paying him for this!
I just finished "The Creative Act," then immediately read it again. Wonderful

Well the guys actions lead to nu-metal, so im surprised he isnt in music prison. Guess he was pardoned because he was so good.
This movie title is crazy though - Rick Rubin was basically the most famous and well-known producer in his hey-day (hardly 'invisible'!?) and also it is so disrespectful to call him hip hops greatest producer. just no.

4:33 "Soon he was playing guitar in his own punk band called, "The Pricks" - 1981
So my question is; Is he a musical genius who denies being a musical genius by denying his deep understanding for music?
Or, did he just forget that he plays instruments?
Well, there is a difference between playing guitar tabs and knowing about music.
Isn't a guitar a instrument or is it just a tool...
This young man means well. But youth has him stumbling.
You didnt need to know anything about music or be able to play guitar in a 1981 punk band.

This short film or documentary is just simply beautiful.
Just watching Rick talk relaxes me a ton.

And brings the destruction of audio quality
I’m glad he’s grown since his time with The Beastie Boys, he was not a good person to them pushing out one member, a woman with his desire to make the band a frat act, then tried to get Mike D out of the band as well. The fact that they left him and def jam right after License to Ill. Really does say a lot who he used to be.

On top of being a genius music producer he seems like a very good man and a loyal friend
Not loyal to the Beastie Boys...at all. Of course he'd want to project a loyal image, but he was far from loyal. Keep reading. Things, and people, aren't always what they seem.
