Rick Rubin is responsible for countless evolutions in music over the last 30 years. From founding Def Jam to working with the Beastie Boys, to reviving Johnny Cash’s career, to being brought in to save ‘Yeezus’ last minute. He is behind hundreds and hundreds of beloved records. Yet somehow, even after absorbing the entire history, it’s still difficult to explain the legacy of a man who doesn’t appear to do much while doing everything at the same time.

Rick is the epitome of when someone says "I like all genres of music", no joke, he loves music like no other. He's such a legend.

I've used each genre listed to produce hip-hop music which is of course has a foundation in sampling. Over the years I've truly learned to appreciate all sorts of sounds. Bless.

As an aspiring music producer for the last 20 years, Rick Rubin has always been an idol and influence to me in a spiritual sense. He works purely on instinct coupled with experience. Part of being a great producer in my opinion is understanding people and their strengths as well as their flaws and getting the best performance possible through the beauty of their imperfections coupled with their talent and their presence in the moment. I’d love to one day get to meet him and thank him for his influence on my own artistic journey with music (even if I’ll always be a small creator)
Probably one of the most inspirational and essential videos i've EVERY watched on UA-cam hands down! Wow... Thanks for this awesome production. The absolute best 34 minutes of my career life.
EVERY
@@youngdelfa let me guess… aspiring English teacher when you GROW UP? Oh wait… you proofread UA-cam comments as a hobby huh 🤔. Great job finding mistakes. Hope you own the ones you make in your own life too. That’s true growth.
@@ToddBangz calm down big guyy
@@ToddBangz this is the best 34 mins of your career?
@@fatweirdo4894 uh sure
Shit he might be unknown to most of today's youth, but us OG's definitely remember him from his days with the Beastie Boys, then taking Jay to the next level, and working with a who's who of pretty much every conceivable genre you can fathom. Dude's a legend.
True Dat!!!
I think, if some of the youth who would like to do a thing that will stay in a culture, will be remembered, Rick Rubin is the guy to make it happen no matter what, if there is shit to reduce, Rick Rubin is the guy to reduced
Best thing he ever did was to leave def jam
Ya mane, we din’t forget
@@grby_albrt1563 For real! I need to learn from this great guru reducer. I need to Rick Ruben my life!
Your videos are so well produced. Incredible!
I feel like I never end up watching these kind of long-form UA-cam mini-docs all the way through. By the time this one ended I didn’t even realize it was 30 minutes. Really awesome content
This was better than watching Behind The Music. Fantastic work here. Thank you for putting this documentary together to help change perspectives. As an artist, dancer, singer, writer, photographer, and sculpter, I'm never quite sure where to put my focus. Lately I've been meditating more than anything and from the looks of this video and Rick's process, I believe I'm on a better track now than in the past. I cried at the end because I recently came to the realization that heart comes before head. Thank you again.
21:26 Rick coaching jay on his biggest song of all time, while jay hasnt the slightest clue whats going on is the coolest shit
Thank you for introducing this man to me!
Absolutely amazing video. Great work honestly impressive work
The jonny cash segment had me in tears. Such a great video as usual Jake! 🔥
This is my favorite video of yours so far. You really delivered. And learning so much about this iconic human was incredible. Truly inspirational, thanks Jake!
One of the most incredible documentaries I've ever seen. Thank you, that was truly something special.

3:20 Post Malone if he lived through the 80s and stayed sober.
Lol
looks more like a Pre Malone to me

i think he would've grown a quicker addiction in the 80's tbh
spot on ahaaa funny AF legit cant unsee
Amazing job on the video - great subject
you´re so good at this, man!
My dream is to one day become so influential that Soulr makes a documentary about me. Great work, as always!
Not the greatest hip hop producer, but surely one of the greatest producers of all times, unique in his vision.
facts. Rick is a great producer with a minimalist hands-off approach. Top Hip Hop producers: *Pete Rock, Madlib, J-Dilla, Q-Tip, Ye, Dr. Dre, Primo, Mantronix, Neptunes, ...*
DILLA MADLIB ALCHEMIST
@@reimourrpower9357 Take Madlib off that list.. straight up shameless!!
@@reimourrpower9357 The best hip hop producers to me are Dre, Diddy, Timberland
@@reimourrpower9357 He's arguably the greatest. If we're going by timeless hits that are the most played throughout hip hop, especially by DJ's at parties, in battles, and the DMC, no other producer is close to Rubin. He produced 5 of the most played hip hop bangers of all time, that all have tremendous energy due to his signature sound, and will probably last as long as humans exist.
Dre, Kanye, and Swizz Beats are for sure contenders, with Premier, Timbaland and the Neptunes deserving honorable mention ... but most people don't get high enough to be into Dilla or Madlib, Pete Rock and Q-Tip didn't make anything that doesn't sound dated (which is what gives TROY timeless charm though), and Mantronix made electro (obv wouldn't be a contender anyway).
Not sure how "minimalist" fits at all either. Rick Rubin's signature sound is detailed big drums that have a live sound to them but are compressed and super punchy, with different great fills at the end of every 8 bars and frequent use of turntables to alter the drum kit sounds. Can't do work like that with no hands.
I'm a 75 year old super stud new to this channel. I really appreciated this video...I learned so much about Rick in a way I had not before....thank you.
This was so dope. Thank you
This may be my personal favorite so far. So good and insightful. Thanks for the effort and work into this JZ!
Soulr's documentaries / biographies make me appreciate these artists and creatives more. These videos are great!
Very, very great documentary! Well put togheter, and also really informative... keep up the good work! 😉
Thank you very much for doing this
3:20 I like how Rick Rubin was born a full-sized adult with beard in 1963.
JK, this guy is awesome
This is the video that’s finally convinced me that you are the real deal, I’ll click the link and support
Incredibly well done! Thanks for sharing and shedding light on someone worthy of celebration. I feel inspired to create.
ALWAYS TRYING TO GIVE GREATEST STATUS TO WHITE PEOPLE WHEN THEY STEAL SH@T........... JUST LIKE...........EMINEM, THE GREATEST RAPPER EVER IS NOTHING MORE THEN RACIAL HIERARCHY. LIKE THIS..
A FORM OF AS@ KI@@ING BY THOSE WHO STATE SUCH NONSENSE IS ONLY TRYING TO STAY POPULAR IN THE EYES OF MAINSTREAM MEDIA CONTROLLED BY THE WHITE DOMINATE SOCIETY.. JUST LIKE ELVIS.. BOTH EMINEM & ELVIS PERFORM BLACK MUSIC. BUT BECAUSE OF RACE AND THE HIERARCHY IN THIS COUNTRY, THEY WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE ELEVATED ABOVE BLACK RAPPERS AND SINGERS AND PRAISED AT A HIGHER LEVEL.. THEY DID THIS SAME THING DECADES AGO, WHERE THEY HAD BLACK ENTERTAINERS PRAISING ELVIS. IN ORDER TO LEGITIMIZE AND EMPOWER THE HIERARCHY.. ALSO.. GREATEST EVER IS FOOLISH.. MUSIC IS SUBJECTIVE
Inspired by the story. Great content/documentary. Awesome work, thank you!
