FYI - the TARE key on the scale will zero out the weight of the lighter, eliminating the math.
thanks lol but I didnt realize that until after I was into the experiment so I did it the long way for now interesting findings so far but ill redo the test again with full zippos to see if its consistent...

IDK the chemical processes involved, all I know is, most polymers shrink when exposed to flame or heat..well except silicone, which is why cooking utensils...and other things😃are made out of it.

The Exotac Titan Lighter is a GREAT alternative...but its not a Zippo.
I'm far more excited than i should be to see how this turns out.... I carry a zippo every day as my "easy" source of fire. but also hate the idea of constantly wasting fuel i paid for via evaporation... I'm working on a design for a waterproof/leak free zippo case, but in the mean time, if this gasket extends the life of each fill up, or improves my mileage so to speak, it seems like a super simple and cost effective upgrade. Thank you for doing the test. Absolutely subscribed and waiting for the update.

Sadly I think it's mostly evaporating through the wick.. But it's realy interesting to see what happens!
Yeah I thought that on the first video also. Plus maybe overfilled first time.
That's how a wick is supposed to work so that's exactly what will happen. This gasket might help in the event of overfilling but I really think it's kind of pointless. The wick will pull the fuel into the lid and the unsealed seam between the lid and body will let the fuel vapors leak out. You either put a ranger band around your zippo or you go butane insert. That's how you improve or fix this issue.

Thyrm makes a zippo case replacement, which, while made of plastic, actually seals completely. I haven't filled my pipe zippo in weeks, and it still works flawlessly.

I made one myself and I used a thick piece of leather cut to fit the Zippo, works great!
i believe that was due to shrinkage after being in direct contact with heat from the flame which was seeping through the gaps in your previous video
I don’t understand why you are burning so much of the fluid. Why should the gasket affect its efficiency while burning? Aren’t you just trying to determine whether or not it stops evaporation? Every ounce of fuel you burn is an ounce of fuel that you cannot test for evaporation. Eventually, you’ll just burn all the fuel away long before it would have evaporated. Shouldn’t you just light it every day to make sure there is still fuel in it until the fuel evaporates?
You are leaving the zippos lit for too long.. The heat is causing fluid to evaporate and it's shrinking the gasket.. My Zippo is only lit for a few seconds at a time if I'm lighting a cigarette or a doobie.. 10-15 seconds max if I'm starting charcoal in the chimney or a camp fire in the burn pit..
Why would evaporating fluid cause the gasket to shrink? It's certainly not because of heat, any pressure would be relieved through the top, what's left? The gallery itself looks like it reacted to the fuel. If so that makes it absolutely worthless as a lighter gasket.

The heat from leaving the Zippo lit for so long is causing the fluid to evaporate faster than it normally would, and the heat is also causing the gasket to shrink.. You should leave a Zippo lit for 5 minutes and then touch it and see how hot that shit is.. That heat is whats melting the gasket not the lighter fluid.. That gasket was specifically made to go inside a Zippo.. I'm sure the manufacturer is not stupid enough to make it out of a compound that would melt on contact with lighter fluid.. Heat melts rubber and plastic..

you know what i was thinking could you try taking the felt pad and just dipping it in wax that way it would be almost water proof and air tite..ya just drop the felt pads in wax...
Sounds like a pain to fill it back up though
just put a small nail in the fill hole to hold onto it// but thats just me..
...and the the wax melts and gums up your lighter..
there should be no reason two let your zippo burn long enough two get hot.. but good point

Your first red gasket has shrunk. If you collect Slim Zippo Lighters, you could see about using the gasket in one of those.
David Condon All of my slim Zippos have a curved, swoopy edge on the bottom of the insert, something like that wouldn't work for them. Maybe old ones, I don't know about them.

The gasket looks great, but I think I'll just stick to the bag trick. Its been two and a half weeks and my zippo still lights without a problem.
Can I put a regular cotton in the lighter or it has to be certain cotton?
I came to this video for obvious reasons. I was thinking of buying a gasket for my zippo lighters. Good thing I did. At first I was surprised by the result of a smaller flame and felt irritated, given my science background, that I didn’t understand why. So I attempted to have a few ideas of my own and that’s when it came to me and I realized the results aren’t surprising at all. Make perfect sense in fact. So I think a water bottle may be the best intermediary. The reusable what’re bottles have a whole in the cover to let air in otherwise it becomes very hard to suck water through the straw. This is because something must replace the liquid being removed from the inside. The gasket causes negative pressure resistance to the capillary action of the wicking process.
Maybe they used the wrong type of plastic to make it cheaper and now it's leeching off plasticiser.
I doubt this will help saving fuel. You'd be better off just putting grease on the inset to make it seal better.
I am going to try my own experiment with vasoline to see if that works, when it comes down to it the insert is anything but an airtight seal.
Thinking further on the testing. What would be the average amount a zippo is lit a day? Maybe only light it for that much a day. The plastic may be shrinking because you have it lit for a minute a day instead of a few seconds. This isn't an excuse for the product, but maybe its why the plastic shrank.
I wonder if you could put them both on a scale and see how fast the weight goes down

This is a great idea. I can't order these where I live but this did give me the idea of lining the bottom of the casing with a silicone pad. Hopefully this seals up the bottom a bit. Nothing can be done about fluid evaporating from the wick but oh well.
2 years late, but I have a solution: silicone cover on the closing piece that encases the actual part that lights. Sure, it’s overkill, but it’d work.
@@itsmethatsit.2934 These days I just have a 1 inch long piece of a bicycle tube stretched around the Zippo when I'm not using it. It seals everything up pretty well.
I wonder if the reason your zippo caught fire around the insert was due to the way you filled them. The excess fluid would be dripping into the bottom of the case and that is probably what was on fire.

Was there another video after this? I can confirm after a few weeks of use the black gaskets shriveled up and became very brittle. After exposure to Zippo brand fuel for awhile they completely disintegrated.
Now, when you promise to 'keep us posted', any chance you can update with a link to the results? I can't wait.
Nice !! Good thinking measuring the fluid. on the previous test you said you lit them for 5 minutes at a time I think that's why the gasket shrunk, from the heat.
it weighed less after you started drip filling the first zippo by .02 also how come you didnt rewick them so they were the same? im sure the wick jobs were not the same one could be just that much lower letting it last that tiny bit longer?
are they different sizes for different modes? I know the 1941 and 1935 replicas are slightly bigger.
I stopped buying zippos cause the fliud always evaporates. So instead I got a Douglas Field lighter and it last so much longer in between fills. That bottom gasket mod on the zippo isn't going to work that well in comparison to the Douglas IMHO.
I also have a Douglas field lighter, fantastic lighter, bics are great but of course throw aways as well.
Scripto vu is the answer you are looking for. They haven't made them in a while but plenty are available. Pricey if you want one of the popular ones like dice or the fly lure but there are lots of various advertising ones still pretty affordable.
I know its a lil off topic but i was wondering if you had ever painted a zippo , i have one i found but it looked like it was thrown in a fire and burned to a crisp , the insert was history but i replaced insert and cleaned case and sanded heavily and now it works perfect but after sanding i sanded down through chrome and now brass is showing thru on edges doesnt look too bad but i thought about painting but wasnt sure what paint to use , its a 2011 model so i really want to bring it back to life any ideas
So I got the gasket and it's been a couple of months now hasn't shriveled up I only light it maybe 10 seconds at a time I don't leave it on for a long time cuz it's a lighter so I use it like a lighter so far been happy with gasket. I see the gasket is just keeping the fuel in longer I hated the leaky fuel at the bottom

Either the piece shrunk because of the heat which then cause fluid to leak out. Or, the fluid caused it to shrink which let the fluid leak out. Maybe you check the bottoms of both Zippo's everyday before lighting them.
One of the good thing about fluid is you can use gasoline which can damage the lighter but since it's everywhere, and with the fluid, you can use it for other purposes
should have done a third one with the felt thing in still to see if it has an effect or not

Hey, the distance of the wick to the wheel can effect how large the flame is. I would make sure they are the same distance so that one Zippo is not making a larger flame than the other, which would cause one to use more fuel than the other. Thanks, can't wait to see the results.

I actually purchased a butane insert for my lighter because I was concerned about fuel leakage. Hopefully this gasket helps as nothing beats a traditional zippo

Am I seeing wrong, or is that the one with the insert was 60.43 gm when filled and 60.67 gm after a min? It's not gaining weight obviously vs the other losing 0.12 gm after a min

Maybe add a third new zippo with the gasket in use and the padding still in it. If you have multiple variable groups you can have an easier time narrowing down things. Also more subjects to add to the sample, but that would mean purchasing more zippo's. This isn't needed, but if you really wanna test it and get accurate data, the more scientific the better.
While the first round didn't quite work out, I'll admit, it was very informative. I'll be blunt: I don't plan on getting a brand new lighter and wick with my gasket (assuming I'll get a gasket).
If it were me, I'd just plug my new gasket into my existing lighter. Now if the first experiment tells me doing so will result in problems, potentially hazardous problems, I'm probably going to hold off buying one until the kinks are worked out..........

🙇 Seeing how many people out there that are still trying to resolve this issue is amazing. There is just no way to get that fuel from evaporating out of the top seam! The fact of the matter is just that zippo already makes to much money off there continuous model design to change their design completely. 😔
💡They should incorporate a type of gasket or seal into the bottom of the insert. That would not change the outside asthetics. Or some sort of seal on that seam.💡🤔
But then how would they sell fuel. Smh.🤦

Yeah I use that mod...and that's where I learned it. But it might get fidgety at times.

I had guitar honey spill on a rubber band in my closet. Guitar honey is like WD-40 it's a very fine oil. The Rubberband shrunk and changed composition. Good luck

I dodnt shrink, it melted because if the lighter is lit for a few more seconds, the hole lighter gets hot, its all metal. That also helps with the awful fuel evaporacion.

Looks like you have cooked the gasket, it would appear not to be fit for purpose if that is what happens.
So... after a few days that gasket shrunk??? I wonder why? That gasket is a dangerous thing to put there. If it shrinks theres no purpose on have it. I think that gasket it's just a way to make money out of people, it doesn't work how it should. After the test you going to run show us the gasket, it might be like the orange one, so it won't do its job
Just a crazy guess. But the shrinkage could possibly be from thermal radiation. The heat of the flame transferring down the zippo to the gasket. Just a guess since when things rapidly cool and heat, material can expand or shrink.

Why bother improving a Zippo? Compared to a butane lighter, disposable or otherwise, they just aren't as practical. It's like putting electronic ignition on a flathead Ford motor. Zippos are what they are, if you love them, you love them.
