Super Mario Bros. - WTF Happened To This Movie?

- Опубліковано 15 тра 2019
- In this recurring series, we'll be taking a look at a variety of films that had historically troubled productions or controversial problems in making it to the big screen. Some were massive hits despite their problems, while others died a slow box office death. Regardless of where they ended up, we have to ask the question: WTF happened to this movie?
This episode, host Ian Jentzsch dives into the insane production and release 1993's videogame adaptation of Nintendo's Super Mario Bros., starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper. Hoskins famously called the film the worst" he'd ever done and Hopper said it was a "nightmare" to work on. The movie flopped at the box office and was a critical failure, now residing in a weird kind of cult status. So, What The F*ck Happened To This Movie?

You have to give the editors of this film credit: they did indeed make it coherent despite the fact that the script was changing every 2-3 hours.
yeah i imagine that was hell for them
Only because they locked the directors out of the editing suite.
Nearly thirty years later and Hollywood is still making most of the same mistakes with game-based movies.
@Brandon Brooks Detective Pikachu was done right. A tribute to the source material, with easter eggs to the game spread through the movie and showcasing a town that could've actually existed. And important of all, it gives prominent screentime to the titular creatures and not just Pikachu.
SONIC THE MOVIE was great and Angelina jolie Lara croft was better than the new one
I'm still ass destroyed that the Max Payne movie was garbage.
What about Mortal Kombat (1995) ?
@@joandarc441 Sonic the movie was irredeemable garbage. Have you ever played an actual sonic hame ?
Being passed over for this movie has to be the best thing that ever happened to Tom Hanks. No contest.
I wish Tom Hanks said yes to play Luigi, he would’ve been a great Luigi
@@marcus5528 Probably, but this script could potentially have destroyed his career. At the very least it is a horrible movie that is not on his resumé now.
Frankly, after watching "Super Mario Bros." I realized that "Batman & Robin" is a real masterpiece.
I have this on blu ray and I still think the extras are a good laugh as everyone's talking trash about the directors
chumpyman I still love this movie. I know that it’s objectively awful, but I love it.
Vincent H. You get me.
@chumpyman I might have to check that out, solely for that purpose 😁👍
Yeah kind of sounds like WCW
Like Howard the duck
"and there's whatever Uwe Boll was doing..."
I believe that's called "swindling the German Federal Film Fund".
No - actually: Uwe Boll is dry-sucking the Canadian Federal Film Fund as most of his movies are shot in Canada. There even has been some demand from Canadian citizens to stop giving him more tax-money as his movies are so fucking BAD. EPIC.
Danny Devito as Mario and Tom Hanks as Luigi would've been too much perfection for one movie to handle.
Matt Frewer as Max Headroom was brilliant humor. Timing, references, tangents and non sequitors... Still stands up.
I really liked this movie as a kid. Same with Waterworld and a lot of disasters.
And I love this series
Wyatt Bosch ,,, I walked out of this movie, I was in the 5th grade, my mom wasn't even outside, I stood in the lobby until she showed up, that's how bad this movie is
In 93 I would be 12 and I saw Super Mario Bros with my brother and dad. I might be a bit biased, but I loved the movie. I forget the name of the guy playing Luigi, but whenever I see him in a movie "Hay! its Luigi!"
Think if they made it more for kids it would have done much better, kids don't care about story as much as adults.
marioxmariox , that's cool, I like movies others don't to
So did i
I liked it too. I remember trying to pick out references to the games with my sister. What a disaster though. It should have just been a straight adventure film more geared towards kids.
Nintendo: can you make it a little dark? Just slightly
Directors: ok *smashes the edgy button*
inspirations for the Mario movie include Die Hard, Batman, Ninja Turtles, Max Hedroom, Ghostbusters, and Blade Runner? the MARIO movie?
Nolan Sr must have been involved lol
@@ryanrod6990 everything except the Mario games. Explains a lot.
Yeah but it's awesome Nintendo's fault. They shouldn't have just handed the reins over to another company sold the rights without having any control knowing Mario is the most popular character
@@ryanrod6990 Don't forget Bill And Ted
To stay close to sorce material they should have made it about 2 Italian brothers who are plumbers who eat magic mushrooms and have some unrealisticly insane trip about saving a princess, it should have been fear and loathing mashed up with the wizard of oz type vibe
Digging this idea totally
We were on the edge of Queens, on a call, when the drugs began to take hold...
I was 9 years old when this came out. A big mario fan. And I loved this film. Instead of feeling alienated by the deviation from the source material, I found it interesting to see such a different interpretation. I was young enough not to think too much about it and the film made a great impression on me. I still love it. I know it's rubbish, but I love it anyway.
Yeah, mostly same here
It was weird cos Turtles nailed that. Having grown up on the cartoons, I was surprised what a tone shift the film was, but I still loved it, because it was good! Batman, also as my only intake of it had been repeats of the 60's show. But again, well made. Dick Tracy (1990) might have been a better inspiration on Mario, as at least it was beautifully consistent with the source.
Preach it!
Same for me too
It's not a different interpretation, it is wearing the skin of Mario.
I remember when Mario Bros. came out when I was a kid and when I saw it; it was unrecognizable as the Nintendo game. There were 2 guys in it named Mario and Luigi and that's it - like Mario Bros on the Total Recall set. It was some other movie.
Edit: This was a damn good video thanks for making it!
That's a good way of describing it. Mario Bros in Total Recall.
I was 10 when this came out and I did play the Mario games on my Nintendo and my SNES but then this...I had no idea who was who or WHY it was so frightening and slimy. Those small headed things, I had no idea what they were and they say those were supposed to be Goombas? I know what a Goomba was and what they looked like and THAT was not it. Also what the hell did they do to Toad? He was cute in the games and I had no idea what Toad was supposed to be in this. It still baffles me now at 36 how this was ever made.
Imagine thinking Tom Hanks isn't likable enough. Drugs are cool!
OH HELL NOO
I would totally gargle Tom Hanks balls, no homo.
Tom Hanks would of saved the movie on his own.
Bunnydeth What?
Look at the bright side, the same year that the Mario brothers movie came out Tom Hanks was doing sleepless in Seattle and he would later to Philadelphia and Forrest Gump in toy story. So in the end Tom Hanks won :)
I loved it as a young kid because I didnt know any better
i am 46yrs old and i love the movie so i still dont know any better!!
I loved it back then (not as a SuperMarioBros movie but as a movie) and still do. Because i dunno… i just love the whole dank industrial fungus infested parallel world .
When you said “”22 Pokémon films.” I felt that. I’m getting old
I think we should kill each other right now.
I stopped counting at 4...
Loved the Mario movie as a kid, saw it again in my 20s then my early 30s I still love it. To me it's like the Room, so bad it's good.
That's true. It is so hilariously bad, specially Dennis Hopper
Couldn't have put it better.
Gaming For The Recently Deceased ...i saw this a kid and said...what garbage am i watching????
Hopper's incredible in this. One of his best 90's villains. "Yeah, and I'll see you in the playground after school!"
@@carlhiller9659 Hopper's performance always lifts a shitty movie by at least one star :D
Am Geilsten war der Kommentar von Uwe Boll am Ende ... ich geh fest. You made my day with the Uwe Boll ending! LOL
I'm 40 years old. I loved this film as a child even though I was disappointed it wasn't true to the source material.
Would I watch it again today? No, but that's only because I'm saving it for my upcoming mid life crisis.
I saw this movie when I was 32 years old. I took my kids and partner with me.
@@shanechannel7066 nice! Thanks dad. We sons appreciated it.
@@nonedefense8296 I'm was just trolling. But I won't lie, this movie is apart of my childhood.

@18:01 This reaction had me in stitches.
Thanks for all the behind the scenes info.
18:02. You clipped out the other 2 lol.

I was a little kid when this came out. I liked it, but I remember thinking it was a weird movie lol
I remember being really excited to catch this airing on tv, and loving it, but was always confused and disappointed that the mushrooms, Toad, other characters, etc looked completely different
This was a great presentation, well done and thank you
I remember back in the 90's they used to have a Super Mario Brothers tv show that would play every day, and on Fridays it would be a Zelda episode. That was always the big thing, because the Zelda episodes were way better. How have they never made a Legend of Zelda movie?
Dude i love this series! More wtf happened!!!
Series mate it's a movie you off ya head
@@liamfeatherstone924 As in the series of UA-cam videos. Don't try correct me fuck wit

I've been binge watching this channel for the last 2 days
This was amazing, especially the Uwe Boll voice mail at the end
I remember my friend and I were super excited to see this movie in the theater on opening weekend. We walked away shaking our heads.
This, the original Judge Dredd, and Waterworld are some of the best "awful" movies, I love them.
Oh i love waterworld and is very ‘awful’
If I'm not mistaken, Tron was the 1st video game movie
But it wasn't based on an already established video game it was mostly a stand alone. As far as I remember. I could be wrong though.
@@13376UNN3R you could be right. Tron the game and movie came around the same time. The game could have been used to promote the movie
kennedy franklin I looked it up because I was curious, the games were based on the movie.
You are mistaken
THANK YOU for putting that Uwe Boll bit at the end. I've been hearing people mispronounce his name for years... not because I knew the correct pronunciation, I've never been certain what it was, but because I've heard it so many different ways, I knew most of them had to have been wrong.
I felt exactly the same way. Once I found that, I had to put it in the video.
Awesome Video. Ending commentary was Hilarious
Max headroom does make sense it was the 80's lots of cocaine
Everytime I revisit this movie. I seem to enjoy it more and more. I think it would have been best, not a Mario Bros movie.
For Uwe Boll. I did enjoy postal.
Postal is his ONLY good videogame movie because it just totally caught the whole "fuck political correctness" attitude of the games. Plus Zac Ward gives a great performance as Postal Dude.
"Could be the first to pull it off"
The first Mortal Kombat movie was really good.
It's not really good. It's decent. But they got the characters right at least.
To be honest, Bill Murray and Tom Hanks could've been a great Mario and Luigi if done right.
Can we get a WTF Happened or Awfully Good on Godzilla 98?
Yes please, that movie should be called "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms: the remake" instead of Godzilla. At least the animated show based on the movie was more a love letter to Godzilla than the movie itself.
"That's a lot of fish!"
No
Yeah fuck them for trying to put an actual story upon godzilla it wasnt good but whatever
If they just embraced the improv and shot miles of stock, this could've been an amazing film...
Awsome video, please make more. Really good stuff!
that bob hoskins quote from the guardian you show toward the end is hilarious
I bet you James Cameron could pull off a Zelda film. Just imagine his style exploring something like the water temple. My god, I don't know if we deserve it.
I love that a UA-camr legit said they couldn't explain Max Headroom. Like... Max Headroom was a Viral UA-cam Meme before any of those things were things!
A perfect candidate for this channel.
Great video! I think an episode about Uwe Boll could be great too!
Thanx to that voice mail at the end I now know how to pronounce Uwe Boll
Tom Hanks would’ve been a perfect Luigi.
How about an actual Italian Actor? Hoskins was a Jewish Brit.
yet to find an equivalent channel that gets this indepth on a film's development history. good job dude.
Danny Devito was also supposed to play Wolverine in the X men movie because in the comics he was always short and hairy, they went with Hugh Jackman instead
futuramayeah ..im still waiting for a Twins sequel
Actually it was Bob Hoskins! For the same reasons.
Tom Hanks as Luigi along side Bob Hoskins would have been great..
It would of been, better than him
Ron Criswell Tom Hanks and Marlon Brando as mario
@@robdcollector2808 Marlon Brando?
Warren G lol...that was just a joke. I couldnt think of anyone else fat during that time. It was either him or danny devito
@@robdcollector2808 I just wanna know, who my parents were!!
I have a theory that if you removed all of the references to "Super Mario" but kept all the weird alternate dimension stuff and "zany antics" you would have a movie that adults of today remember the same way they remember "Dark Crystal" or "Labyrinth". But the expectations of a "Super Mario Movie" versus what was actually developed I can see why people felt soured on this movie.
And most of the backstage dysfunction. Labyrinth and Dark Crystal were both done by Jim Henson, who ran a good set and was very well respected.
@@LUNITUNZBackup Well, sure, but I mostly mean from the child-audience perspective, not as an adult who understands that the full scope of a movie includes the behind the scenes stuff too. But as a kid you didn't grow up thinking "Man, I wish those studio execs could get their shit together and run a solid and competent business." You grew up thinking "Man, I wish that Super Mario movie wasn't some weird post-apocalypse movie about dinosaur evolution."
I love this video series joblo. Never stop
JoBlo Videos is a very competent videos making site. I'm now convinced. I suscribe.
I work with the guy who sculpted and painted the goomba and bowser. He is an awesome guy and his work is great, even the goombas and bowser are technically great even if you don't like the design
It was a very well designed movie. It's one of it's strong points.
the easiest way to explain the 80s... Money. Cocaine.
Pretty much this, Hollywood loves their drugs.
I have no ide why...but this was fascinating to watch. Well done dude
Most people seem to not remember that this film actually got decent ratings from movie-reviewers at the time. One of the biggest things that killed it though, wasn't so much game fans hating on it, but its release coinciding very close to a little known independent film called Jurassic Park. Miyamoto also encouraged the movie to be its own thing from the beginning and it morphed more and more from a more typical Mario-game script to the final product we got.
I personally love this move and every time I re watch it, I love it more. The idea behind the final version and the mind-set you need to watch this, is not that its a poor adaption of the games plot, like say the Street Fighter movie, but rather the events of the film are the "true events" of the REAL Mario Brothers and after they return to Brooklyn and become famous as the "Super" Mario Brothers, thats when Nintendo of Japan decides to develop a series of video games based on their adventures. So rather then the movie being a loose adaptation of the games, imagine the games as being a loose adaption of the movie, and you will get a better idea what direction the movie was going, despite its actual filming insanity.
‘Twenty-two? My gawd’ - is right! 😳
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid! Even if it was a mismatch and hodgepodge of things
This series is great man. Keep them coming!!!

Out in the cosmos, Mario, Luigi and Daisy are still off on that adventure!

Well done. This is mind blowing.
Great movie. That scene with Speed of Light by Satriani and the "How many Marios are there?!" are iconic.
This explains so much...
GASP! a new WTF HAPPENED!! YES!!! YES!! Thank you!
Dude, wtf happened?
And now Illumination are attempting an animated Super Mario bros movie.
After seeing the cast, I immediately felt like history is going to repeat itself when this film is released next April.
And also, the scene with the original World Trade Center being de-evolved did not age well.
Where did you find all of this behind the scenes footage?
Warcraft wasn't that bad, and I'm glad you got the credit right for the Zelda song, System of a Down even went on the record to say it wasn't them and they wish they actually did write it. But man, sounds like a shitty time in mushroom kingdom production wise, keep up the good work with the videos, I really enjoy this series
Despite some plot differences, Warcraft was probably the best direct-adaption to film of a video game, not counting non-live action stuff.
@@mr.vidjagamez9896 The Japanese Phoenix Wright/Ace Attorney film has some words for you. Seeing as that flick is nearly a direct adaptation script wise and even more so visually.
WTF Tom Hanks is very popular.
Not so much back then. Hollywood used to think he was not a very good actor.
That was great! Well done good video.
Ya gotta admit the sets back then, no matter what film, were so fucking good!
"... oorrr could beee thee sooooOOONICCC HEDGEHOOOOOG!!" rofl!
Imagine Danny DeVito as Mario. Wouldn had been perfect
Why did I just suddenly think of DeVito smoking a cigar and wildly firing a machine gun into the air, ala that Austin Powers joke?
I'm only surprised it took you so long to cover this one!
Before it actually came out, lots of us already had created in our heads our own version of what it was gonna be like. We were wayyyy off. The trailers themselves could be watched all the way through (by some of us). Down in flames went all of our hopes or even wants for a slew of video game live action adaptations. But you make a good point; it didn't stand out as uniquely terrible. In fact other than some of the elements it was just another one of "those type" of movies that decade tossed at us. And how many of those are even remember still?
Oh man Schwartznegger would of saved this movie it would of saved it for me anyways because I unironically love Arnold as mr freeze oh god I wanna hear him make lizard puns "I am the scales of justice! and my justice is cold blooded!"

Call It partly nostalgia but the 1993 film Is an early 90's classic and one of my favorite game adaptations , It's a fun movie , actually pretty dark In tone for a Mario film , John and Bob Hoskins work well together and were memorable , this was also back when practical and special FX were still creative and original (weather Ideas worked or not at least they tried back then). Who remembers the slow song Bob Hoskins was dancing to with Big Bertha when he was trying to get back the meteorite necklace , "I Would Stop The World" - by Charles & Eddie.
Nice Soad clip at the end

Do you want to get punch
I don't care, I friggin' love this movie! :D
Hewy Toonmore it’s actually one of my favorites! Lol 😉
Hi, Hewy!
I really like this Stupid Movie .
It's funny that back in the day when I saw the movie MOM and DAD SAVE THE WORLD, the moment I saw the Mushroom monster, I said that the people that made that movie could in fact make the Super Mario Movie. My pick for Mario and Luigi were seen in the movie MOUSE HUNT, Nathan Lane as Mario and Lee Evans as Luigi. As for King Bowser Koopa and everything else, they should had contacted the Late Jim Henson's company run by his son.
I liked the late Bob Hoskins playing Mario, though John Leguizamo I found him to be too young to play Luigi since Mario and Luigi are supposed to be fraternal twins. Mario's girlfriend Daniella played by the very beautiful Dana Kaminski, whom I thought was Pauline from Donkey Kong (and in fact should had been) was pure eye candy, but also gave it a solid Italian Brooklyn girl vibe. Samantha Mathis was ok, but I think that playing a damsel in distress ain't that difficult. And mixing Peach Toadstool with Daisy, two distinct princesses was really annoying, though it gave birth the pairing of Luigi and Daisy, while Mario is with Peach...though Daniella/ Pauline would not be too happy...(Wait...Daniella...Pauline...Daniella Pauline!!!).
I was not expecting to hear the aquabats song, nice
NOTHING HAPPENED TO THIS MOVIE.
All you have to do is completley ignore the fact it tried to be anything Super Mario

What's the Zelda track you played at the end of the video?? I think I limewired that back in the day and it was credited as Mike Patton ( Faith No More), but I never believed that thinking it was just a sound-a-like... would love to track that down again
I feel like they need to make a movie about the making of this movie...

This movie is still a guilty pleasure of mine
The elevator dance scene is still something my friends and I love to reminisce about 12:12
