STREET FIGHTER (1994) Jean-Claude Van Damme - WTF Happened to This Movie?

- Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts, or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Rarer still are the movies that, while they're shooting, seem like disasters in the making but wind up being classics.
In the mid-nineties, Capcom's "Street Fighter 2" was the hottest video game in the world. Introducing the one on one fight game, it was only a matter of time until Hollywood came knocking, and when they did, the game was transformed into an unrecognizable big-screen adventure that, years later, is much maligned among fans of the series. Join us as we dig into what went wrong with this big-budget flick, from star Jean-Claude Van Damme's personal demons, to a meddling video game company, to a terminally ill co-star (Raul Julia). All is revealed in "WTF Happened to Street Fighter"!

"The day M. Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday."
Raul Julia was perfect in this movie.
Raul Julia is, hands down, the best part of this movie. He took a thoroughly b-grade unwatchable movie and made it worth a watch if only to see him gleefully portray Bison with zeal and panache.
Of course!
He is an absolute stand out performance in this movie.
Raul julia is a treasure R.I.P.
However try as he might, Raul Julia couldn't make the movie good, much of that goes on Jean Claude's shoulders, diva action star who can't act very well at all... "yeah lets give him the main role!" I feel like this was the same as hiring Elvis for movies "Just let him sing his lines, it'll be good"
The end about Raul Julia and his children is a beautiful thing.
Wholeheartedly agree.
You are absolutly correct
I found myself tearing up... very unexpectedly.
I started crying
It still chokes me up thinking about it. He was terminally ill and dying but he never quit bringing his A game in front of the camera for such a stupid movie, all for the love of his kids
“His children were fans of the video game”
I’m not crying, you’re crying !
I *am* crying, friend. 😭
@@ItsNuxFury we cry because we see a man that exemplifies what a man is supposed be. nothing wrong with manly tears. *saltes to raul julia*
Yes, I'm literally crying.
Not crying worthy soy boy
@@BXD84 you are adorable.
Mad respect for a man. That would jeopardize his entire acting career. Over a film that’s based on his kid’s favorite video game. Great man Raul Julia!
Possibly the best line delivery ever...”For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life...but for me...it was a Tuesday...” A+
the line is, "but for me, it was Tuesday."
@@JoeyMartz he was close enough do be so nitpicky
Thats the one
Raul Julia is legendary. I'm glad he got to use this film as a final vacation with his family. Rest in peace, brother.
R.I.P. Raul Julia. I will forever support this movie in honor of him. Yes, it's campy. Yes, the fights suck. Yes, the characters are barely true to their stories. But damn, that man made M. Bison _real_. And as his last movie, with his kids on set. He deserves everything.
Vaya con Dios sir. You earned it.
Raul Julia's over the top performance is the only thing that makes this movie even remotely watchable.
He basically looked like the in game sprite. A perfect casting, may this legend Rest In Peace.
Why the fuck are you using a line from king of the hill to show condolences?
@@luisdelgado6248 - "Vaya Con Dios" is a very old, traditional religious blessing translated as "Go with God". It was not 'popularized' by King of the Hill and has been used for a very long time in Catholic religious settings. (There was a #1 song "Vaya con dios" in 1953 by Les Paul and Mary Ford as well.) I feel my respect for Mr. Julia as a person and an actor was properly represented by my use of the sacred blessing.
He sure looked like he was having fun making that movie. I don't know many people who were terminally ill who could pull off that.
Raul Julia doing his silliest performance while diyng of cancer only because his children likes some videogame
Thor meme: Because that's what heroes do.
F
He looked visibly poorly in this film. Very pale and gaunt. I heard the shoot was agony for him. What an absolute legend.
F
Yea finding that has me all wet in the eyes
And Chadwick that's crazy
This movie is a guilty pleasure.
I love the games and the stories.
can not watch it at one...
Agree
Nothing to feel guilty about.
Come on guys, the movie was trash.
I don't care for SF games (I prefer Tekken over any fighting game) but this was fun to watch. I knew Raul Julia being amazing thanks to some online reviews.
Who would have guessed that the Street Fighter episode would be the most emotional!
Sean Chandler Talks About I didn’t understand this comment until the end...
@@bkitayama same
Raul Julia was a real class act...
shit moive.. but right business call... everyone get paid.. it was 90's... most of them are terrible anyhow...
he was the best part of the movie
I have a hard time believing that van Damme regretted sleeping with Kylie Minogue.
It’s really wonderful that Steve DeSouza went out of his way to make Raul Julia taken care of by not shooting closeups due to his frail health and having the family visit to cheer Raul. That is truly classy and respectful
“Quick change the channel!” Still one of the best lines ever
Agreed! When we were much younger, my friends and I would randomly shout that out to one another and no one outside our group seemed to recognize the quote. It was our favorite inside joke :)
Alec Aquino haha I’m glad I wasn’t the only one
LOL Yessssss!!!
I also loved the exchange between Zangief and Dee Jay. Z: 'Wait, Bison is a bad guy? If you knew that, why did you still work for him?' DJ: 'Because he paid me a ton of money.' Z: 'What? You got... paid?'
@@Klaital1 haha extremely underrated joke too
Raul Julia made this movie watchable.
But JCVD's speech to his "troopers" is just a treasure.
Ahh... There it is. Thank you. I'm gonna get into my boat nowz😂😂😂😂
sad Julia knew he was dying during filming this, but he did it cuz his kids loved the street fighter games. That's an actor and father definitive
"An unnamed actor was caught trying to sneak steroids into the country."
Definitely the guy who played Zangief.
He looks like the most likely candidate but he wasn’t exactly the only muscle on set.
Lmao
@@abraxaszee8953 just laugh bro lol
This actor was also in "The Program" and his character had the same problem.
I think it was van dame
As an extra as a soldier on this set I can say we worked our asses off. Didn't know how it would turn out at the box office but we had alot of fun! Highlight was meeting Kylie Minogue. She's such a gem!
Wow I love this movie I'm jealous 🥺 I bet it was an awesome experience
Raul Julia playing Bison was like the Green Ranger saying "It's Morphin Time!" one last time knowing he only has enough power for one last morph. He's just that awesome even to the end. Raul Julia...you'll always be Gomez Addams to me but Bison was a great way to go out!
"Didn't think a tournament-movie would work." Had any of these guys ever heard of 'Enter The Dragon'?!!
Yet, they act as if the MK series was any better????? There are so may horrible things related to that series of movies.
"The martial arts trainer" was none other than Grandmaster Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, a legend in the martial arts world and undefeated kickboxer.
He's in the movie when they get on the Prison Bus I never caught that before.
Raul Julia is absolutely the best thing about this film, his performance elevates it from "actually bad" to "so bad it's good", and the air of theatricality he brings to Bison is just [Chef's kiss] perfect.
Rest in Power Raul Julia. Will always love your over the top performance in this movie as well as your depictions of Gomez Addams still my favorite Gomez.
👏
All he wanted was to dedicate his last performance to his children 😢
RIP Raul Julia.
One take away I got from this video is to video is the polar opposites of two men.
Van Dame - cokes out, diva, over prized drama queen.
Raul - dying of cancer, going through therapy and managed to give a quality performance.
Whilst everyone knows this is a bad movie, it's still fun. The zangief bit with him saying "Quick change the channel!" is genuinely funny as well.
Best part of the whole movie
@BIG HUNGRY i can not finish it at one watch..
I still love this film, till this day I get mixed reactions about it. Think about it, its a live action film based on cartoon characters who throw things at each other. If you think of it in that sense, this film is perfect, and the humor is too.
BIG HUNGRY Ren...ted? 🤔
I still quote that! Hahahaha
"Of course!" "For me, it was Tuesday." "GAME OVER!" Raul Julia is so enjoyable to watch. Loved him in this along with the Addams Family. This and Mortal Kombat are still my favourite game movie adaptations of all time.
"They didn't think audiences would take a tournament storyline seriously" So they adapt a videogame about a fighting tournament starring a guy known for making movies about fighting tournaments?
Bruce Lee has enter THE CHAT!
Seriously makes no damn sense
EXACTLY!
1994 bro. Different era. If you wanted to make a big blockbuster, you went PG-13 action-comedy. A martial arts tournament was considered way too niche for a big budget studio film.
I hear you bro.. Blood Sport was 80s.. that was decent yano.
Edit: 1988.
I spent the whole video laughing and even cringing at times but the ending made me cry.
Good job!
Before Chadwick Boseman, Raul Julia did exactly the same. R.IP., both of them.
True.
Imagine a fantasy warfare between
Black Panther(Chadwick Boseman) vs M. Bison(Raul Julia)

@@karimamin2 He is one of those people that thinks anything related to money = capitalism, and doesn't know the difference between greed and an economic system.
Patrick Swayze hid his cancer and worked basically until he passed away as well.
I have to admit to having a huge softspot for Street Fighter. If you take it as a martial arts film, then it is awful but as a comedy it is gold, with some wonderful lines particularly from the great Raul Julia. Any film with the line : "For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. For me, it was Tuesday" can't be that bad. :D
exactly, this is why there are mixed reactions over this film over the years. When sf 10 comes out for ps 20, this film will then become a cult classic :P.
I love Dee Jay's line: "Ah, my mama didn't raise no fool, baby...aw, man! I should've stayed at Microsoft!"
One of the greatest movie lines of all times... ''For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday''
Raul Julia's performance was the best part about this film.
RIP Raul Julia you were a brilliant actor!
Hollywood is diminished by his passing.
I know its bad but I can't stop watching it. The director is good when it comes to funny dialogue, just look at his comedy gold The Running Man. Well at least we still have the animated movie.
One of my most beloved 90s movies
"For I beheld Satan as he fell FROM HEAVEN! LIKE LIGHTNING!!"
Wow, I remember being extremely disappointed with this when it came out but have the utmost respect for the director and Raul Julia.
Raul Julia was the best part of this movie 🖤🖤🖤 Rest In Power 🖤🖤🖤
So, in short, it was a miracle they even finished this movie.
Hard rest in peace Raul. You were a major part of my childhood and I will always like and respect you.
I don't care what anyone says. I loved this movie as a kid and it will forever hold a special place in my memories.
Childhoods Favourite! 😁😁😁
Benny the Jet 10:33 ! 😱😱😱
Raul ❤
Bison is my favorite character in Street Fighter because of Raul Julia. Noone but him could pull off such a powerhouse performance in such an awful movie. They owe him these 100 million. He made the movie real, each time he's onscreen is a lot of fun and even with the movie being such a mess, he gave us one of the best villains ever. Such a gentleman. Such an actor. Vaya con Dios, Raul! We love you eternally!
Raul Julia played a character that is beneath his talent out for the love of his grandchildren who loves the videogame as his parting gift to them. thats so touching and salute to the man.
Raul Julia is a LEGEND. Now and forever always.
This movie is a minor miracle and I absolutely love it. It actually helped launch the careers of many of the actors like Jay Tavare who played Vega, The dude is still ripped to shreds. Also, the guy they cast as T Hawk was part Native American. Gregg Andrew Rainwater is part Osage Cherokee.
RIP, Raul Julia, 1940-1994.
"it was a Tuesday" .. the best delivered sentence in all of acting history.
I adored Raul (from his role as Gomez Addams) when I was kid. I was excited about the movie, even more so after later learning he played Bison. He was a master of his craft. It is popcorn fodder and yet no one can claim there wasn't a single person involved in that film's production who didn't put their heart into it.
The only good thing about this movie is Raul Julia as M. Bison. I cried watching this because of his love for his children. He took the role even though he knew he was dying to make his children happy.
Atleast, Jean Claude Van Damme Kicked his Cocaine addiction and Depression for the sake of his family and Fans.
He's probably clean now but during "Street Fighter" he was just as high as a kite on coke. Even gotten Kylie Minogue panties while he was still married.
And he kicked it SO HOARD!!!
I wish his amazon series had been a success, secret agent movie star was quite entertaining.
look at him..now.. look like shit.. stay away from drug ...kid...
He roundhouse kicked his habit 10x in a row
I wish just once we had gotten to see Raul Julia and Mark Hamill on screen together the amount of scenery chewing and fun those two would have
Rip Raul.
The final comments of Raul Julia brought me to tears unexpectedly. Excellent video.
Jesus Christ, the last part about Raul Julia and his children made me shed some tears!
The end gutted me. What a legend. ❤️👊🏻👌🏻
I remember watching this movie on VHS when i was a kid...and totally loved it
Amazing video, guys! God rest Raul Julia's soul!
I consider Van Damme’s BLOODSPORT to be the REAL Street Fighter adaptation & my favorite Van Damme movie
True
I love Bloodsport but if had to choose either that or Kickboxer then it's Kickboxer everytime for me.
B33FY2015 Oh yea, that’s a tough one..loved that too. Also, my guilty pleasure is Cyborg
i didnt care for the last fight in kickboxer, wouldve been better if they went back n forth in the scene with the fighting instead of van damme's character allowing himself to get beat up and then just kicks the crap out of him after his sensei is rescued.
@@fordprefect4728 I agree, just watched that Sunday. I love the drunken bar scene fight. Van Damme’s zip-up tank top is the shit!!!
Raul Julia is THE ONLY good thing about this movie. He made M. Bison really fun to watch.
but guile did 2 flash kicks, ryu's short range hadoken, vegas rolling claw, kens standing dragon punch, anyone notice the smaller version of sagats statue in this film, or the Honda wall painting, there's more sf in this film then many think.
Stop it,it wasn't a bad movie. There's NOTHING wrong with the editing, lighting, camera work nor is the story bad or the line for line dialogue.
He was a good actor and a good dude but van damme is fun too.
Nope, there's TWO things that are good about this movie and the second one is peak Kylie Minogue in that uniform.
I don't care what anyone says about Street Fighter (1994) I like this movie and JCVD! It's too close to my childhood all good memories for me! Thanks for doing this video great work man!
It made me wonder for many years why Raul Julia's last movie was streetfighter. He is like one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. And then I realized that it was for his children who are big fans of the video game. RESPECT for that!
he not a type that mind silly moive.. if it paid right...
I admire the effort from the crew and director. Geez.
Raul Julia would of had a lot of great roles and performances ahead of him.
RIP
His next role would have likely been Bucho in Robert Rodriguez’ film Desperado. He was reviewing this script the day he passed.
WOULD'VE
AestheticBiker82 ah that’s annoying, I’m not even mad you called me out on that.
My bad.
M Kendall oh man, him working with Rodriguez on anything COULD’VE been really great.
I could see him easily folding in RR’s ensemble of reoccurring actors, too.
Thanks a lot. Street Fighter was one of my favorite video games. R.i.p. Raul Julia.
After watching this and listening to the directors commentary, I have a new respect for the film.
"Someone on set asked why everyone were fighting in the same way" lol
Damn! That ending, bruh! Right in the feelz!
Underrated gem of 90s cinema
I love the man who played Bison. I never knew anything about him until this upload. From now on I'm gonna buy every movie that he was in. I remember the Adams Family in my childhood. He brought me many laughs. ...RIP!
I love this movie, yes it's bad but in the best way.
thank you
Agree.It's cheesy but good cheesy.
Me too. Loved this movie as a kid. It was still fun to watch.
100%! This movie brings me back to my childhood when I didn't critique movies so seriously and i was just excited to see street fighter on the big screen. I still remember all of Bisons lines and speeches.

Raul was an amazing man, one of the nicest I ever met.
I respect Raul Julia even more after watching this video and finding out the only reason he gave it his all was for his kids. He’s actually the only actor who seems to be taking the role serious throughout the whole film. I never thought any less of him and definitely won’t do it now. Thank you for the video.
Raul Julia, the only person who saved this film from disappearing into a void..
Raul is a true legend of cinema godspeed kind sir.
And shout out for Kylie Minogue she is a national treasure here in Australia
Except she lives in the UK since forever.
Raul Made the movie fun to watch. He left his kids an awesome performance.
People get disappointed for anything.
I loved this film.

Love this movie, It's Fun🤩!
Amazing insights and high quality, easy-to-watch content. Well done, man!
Wow, with all the issues I am surprised it came out in time at all. Raul was amazing and stole every scene he was in. A true professional, unlike Van Damme.
8 million... for short work.. anyone would push to get it at time limted...
I know it's no award winner but I truly love this film.
I don't care what anyone says, I LOVE this movie!
The film was cool to see on the big screen back in the day
Did people totally lose their shit when the Van-Dame kinda did a flash kick? Because I have never seen a room go bananas like that... and I live in Brazil, where soccer is all that important.
PS: We also were confused as heck when a "poor man's shoryuken" and a "flash-douken" kinda sorta-happened.
@@diegonei Yes they did..we all thought it was a cool scene 😎
Eh my friends and I didn't think it was cool at all.
I was so let down walking out of the cinema after seeing it...😔
it was boring year...
This movie was lame. 1995 Mortal Kombat movie kicked ass!
Sounds like Raul Julia was a hardcore professional!
Thank you for the video if for nothing other than learning about Raul Julia. He was a wonderful man. Thank you.
Julia was an AMAZING ACTOR!! IM SO GLAD WE HAVE HIS MOVIES!!!! Im so happy he took the Bison role. He is the vest part of the movie!!! "OF COURSE!"
Wow, Byron Mann hasn't aged a bit, he was terrific in Altered Carbon.
Took me way too long to realize this, but he was also a villain on the show "Hell on Wheels."
Wow! I had no idea that was him until you brought that up yeah he was a bad ass in that show. He was also great in Wu Assassins!
well, I'm glad, he's the real Ryu :)
Raul Julia was a King among Men.
R.i.p.
This film will always be a massive guilty pleasure of mine.
This is one of my favorite movies ever. It was the first movie since Empire Strikes Back that I watched multiple times when it first came out.
Raul Julia was such a legend!!!
Wait we could've had Fabio as Vega?!
I love Fabio and his silky long blonde hair. Cool dude!
This interested me too, I wish he played Vega in legends of Chun Li, I MIGHT have accepted that film a bit better seeing the right actor as Vega in that film that who was picked, that film was garbage, back to the 94 sf, Jay was an awesome Vega, not as tall, but was a great pic, when his face gets burned ROFL... PERFECT!
Oh, that last 30 seconds of this got the heart strings!
Hey, interesting channel and wonderful post! Raul Julia was a truly special actor.
The Raul Julia thing makes me cry
I can't convey in words the level of anger I had as an 8 year old leaving that movie theater after watching hollywood take my favorite game and turned it into complete SHT.
Raul Julia has all of my respect for almost saving this movie though.
If only for Raul Julia's Bison, this will always be a fan favorite film. :)
This movie is a classic.
Saw this with my dad in the theater in 1995 months after for 5 bucks when i was 7. One of my fav good-bad movies ever. Raul julia RIP. The soundtrack is a hidden gem...
Do you know the name of the soundtrack?
Thank you for this enlightening video. I was never a fan of the game and was not overly impressed with the film, but you have shown the struggle by the crew and Julia which is fascinating and saddening. RIP Raoul Julia.
After watching this video, I have so much appreciation for Raul Julia and his work ethics. Such an inspiration.
Once again childhood favorite....adult guilty pleasure. Movie is still popcorn fun
