The ‘93 version is just 90s random nonsense and I can’t help but love it.
Honestly, I want to see what would have happened if the studios hadn't interfered with production.
I loved that movie when I was younger, didn't realize how bad that movie was then. It's definitely a so bad it's good movie.
All i know is , i watched it on cable back in the early 90s , lazy afternoon with nothing else to do , and i was mesmerized , didn't read any reviews , had no idea about the drama surrounding it , just watched it pure and without bias , and i had an immense amount of fun with it
@@TemperedMedia we probably would've gotten a more action and story based/character driven film with a higher focus on the directoral vision that had next to nothing to do with the games, but would've made for a unique sci-fi-punk film that would've probably flopped regardless, but would've been better remembered as a genuinely unique/odd take on the source material rather than being seen as a joke that's best enjoyment is watching it ironically.
or smth like that idk.
I love the first one and continue to watch it to this day hahaha
That thousand yard stare when Mark says "I've seen things."
that one got me good... because i know EXACTLY what he means lol
Hahaha that was just perfect. Gotta love that haunting past thousand yard stare lol. Jc help us all!!!!
I felt that to my core
I lost my breath was funny as hell
Yeah, Mark has been through a lot, he's watched the garbage of the garbage, even the same movie 3times plus the researching, just to entertain us and keep the channel, salute!
In regards to the Power Glove. In my game room, I have a lamp that was custom made for me of a Power Glove holding a copy of The Wizard. "Its so bad."
And I mean… BAD.
@@brianbabin6333too bad you can't post pictures on here.
Thank you for the tangent about voice actors. Billy West is an absolute legend & has made me laugh more than any other performer!
Have you seen any of his straight-to-video performances yet?
I agree with you, Billy West is top shelf!!!🙏👌👻❣️
I really want to see Mark do a full rundown of the '93 Mario Bros. movie now...
Absolutely!
He did do one, 9 years ago. Look up "what's wrong with super Mario Bros". It's on this Channel
@@joeberger3441 oh.
Well, I'd still like to see a WMWM circa 2023 version. While still good, Mark then is not the new and improved Mark we have now. Unlike
Neal Breen, Mark has learned from his past work, improved, and solidified his craft. Plus, that one probably didn't start with the patented (I assume) introduction with the emphatic "TO the show," and Super Mario really warrants such an introduction.
(But also, thank you for letting me know. I will check it out! 👍🏻)
Actor John Leguizamo wrote he and 🇬🇧 Bob Hoskins were drunk most of the time on set. He almost got hurt because he wrecked a car on location.
@@mattbaker7305 yea I agree. It looks like he gives it a bit more of a fair shot these days.
If you want to be sad, look up the actor who played Lucas in The Wizard and see what he's known for today. He really should have kept that Power Glove to himself.
Damn that’s dark. He really was a villain
Why would I want to be sad? WTF is wrong with you son?!?!?
I definitely agree on the whole voice acting rant! As a fan of Japanese anime, YOU HAVE TO PICK THE RIGHT AND PERFECT VOICE TO SUIT THE CHARCTER! Don't pick a celerity just because they're "famous." It's all about vocal delivery. Not the person themselves.
I loved the ridiculous and bonkers OG Mario movie. No one would ever take a chance like that again and that makes it special in its own crazy way.
Exactly I look at it as a enjoyable goofy 90’s movie with the Mario name on it
That's kinda sad. I love it when creatives take chances
I loved it…fun and corny😂
And I think Jack Black KILLED IT as Bowser😂
I love seeing different films through your perspective Mark. I appreciate your critiques and opinions. Let's get Mark to a million subs let's goooo
It's a crime he isn't already there.
Agreed
@@notavailable9919I’m no expert, but I think there’s still a huge chunk of viewers who place more value on quantity than quality. And that’s a shame.
Not only has Mark been doing this since 2011 (if not longer), he’s mentioned several times that UA-cam is not his only job.
If you pay him enough canadian dollars and send him a picture of your bee whole he'll give you his perspective on that too. I can tell you're exactly the kind of fella that would pay any amount of money to see your own bee whole through mark's perspective.
I was one of those Sega Kids back in the days and even I was hyped for that Movie. Just because it was based of a Video Game. It felt like my favourite hobby would go to the next level.
Alex Kidd was my favorite at the time. Mentioning it only because of your avatar 😄
My step dad always told me the same thing!! Turned out to just be a bunch of sex crimes though. The "next level" for him turned out to be a prison. Now who knows what's happening to his bee whole in the showers on a regular basis... he's probably having the time of his life.
I love your delivery in your videos. The Overwerk tracks you play at the end are sick too.
There's probably someone out there who saw the old Mario Bros movie blind, without ever seeing the game somehow, and loved it. Then when they went to go play the game, they were pissed that it was nothing like the movie.
That’s pretty funny though the irony of it
We missssssss you mark. Do more movies !!!!
Please
Roland Joffe was one of the most acclaimed director with The killing field and The mission (Palme d’or at the Cannes festival). He must have been on drugs to proceed with such a doom project. His name was mud after that. It shows how fast you can go downhill-wood
Peter Weller is an actor that worked incredibly well when he voiced Batman in The Dark Knight Returns movie. That movie is also extremely bad ass.
Peter Weller is a great actor in general. He was brilliant in Naked Lunch.
Hey there Mark. Love your videos and all the effort you put into making them. Keep it up, man!
His mom rights his scripps and he lives in his stepdad's bassment. U just a silly fan if you think this joker puts any effort into this!! Dude's a dud... aint got no job and still... STILL can't keep that bee whole clean. Okay it's loose fine but aint no reeson that bee whole should be so philthy son!! NO reeson at all boy!!
we saw this in the theater. it was packed. we had to sit right in front of the screen but we didn't mind because it was really fun. the whole theater was loving the movie! so glad we saw it in theaters! see it there if you still can. bowser really was great... I had the peaches song stuck in my head for weeks! LOL
I grew up with cartoons with Arnold Stang as Top Cat, etc. And, while many actors do good voice acting, I miss the special touches only voice actors I feel have extra nuance
It's a totally different kind of performance, it takes a different skill set. Lots of good film actors just can't do it.
Billy west didn't voice Invader Zim. That was Richard Horvitz whom also voiced Daggett in The Angry Beavers.
Raul Julia's performance of M Bison is a gift from God and I will not hear it disparaged, Mark
14:05 If you don't got Mojo Nixon then your movie could use some fixin’.
You win the internet today! 😂
I was kinda worried about your take on this movie because i genuinely enjoyed it for the same “better than my low expectations” reason that you did. But you actually broke this review down and nailed so many things I didn’t notice, like Seth Rogan’s phoned in performance compared to far more talented voice actors. This is why I religiously watch this channel.
At least Chris Pratt TRIED.
Jack Black was absolutely excellent as Bowser. He’s got some voice work under his belt already and you could just tell he was having so much fun with the role. And you couldn’t tell it was him!
I still love that old Mario movie. That's a peace of my childhood right there.
Excellent video! Personally, I was an Atari 64 abuser, who never played Mario Bro's, never watched the original Mario's movie, and has no intention of seeing the latest, and I can only say thanks for the really interesting look into the intersection of movies and gaming back in the lost innocence of the '80's and 90's!
“Like being directed by Chip n’ Dale” 🤣🤣🤣
This is one of the most underrated UA-cam channels of all time.... This channel deserves to be a lot more popular than it is
I love the original SMB movie, just how notorious it has become over the years. The stories behind it's production are absolutely legendary in the annals of modern media.
Honestly, if i could make any movie, I'd make a mockumentary about the making of the original Super Mario Bros movie. Cast stand-ins for all the players involved, and interlace interviews with actual stars and staff, esp. John Leguizamo, since both Hopkins and Hopper are no longer with us.
I exactly have the same opinion of this movie as Mark: not groundbreaking, but delivered on expectations, no matter as a NES era fan or modern one. The biggest repproach I'd have is how Illumination mostly used Magikoopa as comic relief and then kind of forgot about him along the way and how they got Luigi jailed in Bowser's fortress early on, not really giving him time to develop his character from pushover to badass. But it was an engaging watch in the action department, for sure.
haven't seen you in a long time. welcome back!
The new Mario Movie wasn’t a cinematic masterpiece by general movie standards. But one thing I believe every critic of the Mario Movie completely misses is, “Did the movie understand the assignment?” The Mario Movie was a full on celebration of Mario and some of Nintendo’s earliest IPs, as well as having just the plot needed to make a movie out of. It also helped that they kind of gamified the Easter eggs in the movie as well. So a videogame movie breaking out the mold of trying to just be some blockbuster movie to compare to Citizen Cain or something, they made a videogame movie that was completely not only afraid to BE the videogame, but also was a game in itself. Taking the wide genre, it’s inspired from, into the Theatre. The audience for Mario wanted to see Platforming. They wanted to see familiar block behavior when the characters interact with them. Laugh at the self-inflection about “why am I so familiar with what is going on there, and yeah, those floating bricks would seem weird?” It understood the assignment. It used the familiarity of the audience, for the Wild wacky and weird they’ve grown comfortable with, and shined a mirror on it to make the audience smile. Not only at the movie, but at themselves.
I think it took advantage of timing, and that the majority of the audience now plays videogames, compared to the past. And the adults who waited like 30+ years for the movie they wanted, as a kid, to finally come out. Yeah. A movie can be great in itself and be successful, it can also be one that truly understands the assignment and be successful. I think we all need to answer the question, one which I would love people to try to discuss and come up with an answer. What do you think the people at large want from a videogame movie? Particularly from videogames that don’t try to be movie-like in the first place? Ones that, in their source material, simply go wacky for the pure sense of wonder and fun, building their world or universe off it?
billy west on Howard Stern is amazing
Thank you for recognizing voice actors! Also I want to know who was playing Street Fighter and saw Bison and thought, "This guy reminds me of Gomez Addams."
I legitimately like the 1993 film. As an adaptation of the game its poor but as a wacky post apocalyptic family it's pretty entertaining.
I think the movie was excellent as a "kids with parents who grew up on Mario" movie. In that aspect, it nailed it.
7:20 SO, SO, SOOOO SPOT ON, OMG :))))))))
Proud Patreon. Love the new vid Mark. Keep up the great work!
1993? In the line of fire, son in law, fire in the sky, perfect world, so two Eastwood film's. And freaked with Keanu. And probably a bunch more I don't have in my collection of movies! But I didn't see this until a few years later. It wasn't on anybody's radar in grade school. Feel like there was a Jim Carey flick around that time too?
It’s insane to think that Nintendo, a company thats known to jealously guard its most important IP, would be so hands off and lackadaisical about its first film. Just mind blowing.
how exactly is that mind blowing? do the math, use logic, especially after watching THIS.
Great job, Mark Love your work!
For years, I had thought that Rocky Morton was a sort of in-joke version of Alan Smithee, and some director used an amalgamation of names of Mario enemies and Koopa Kids to cover his tracks before handing it off to another to try to clean it up.
Mark and James Rolfe (AVGN) should team up for a video about this topic of video game movies.
Not a movie I would watch, but I like that it treated the source material with respect.
As a child of the 90s, I can attest your Nam flashback of those video game movies is legit.
Excellent video, perfect contrast!
I saw the old mario movie once back in the day (as a young kid), and had no idea what was going on. Never bothered to sit and watch it again, but I recall being so lost and confused and wondering why mario wasn't in it.
Hey Mark, love your channel, and all the work you do to make your vids great! Especially the bits where are you? Green screen yourself into the movies 😂 keep up the great work, and know you are appreciated by many!
woahhhh! we need a movie version of Golden Axe, Golgo 13, Rolling Thunder, and Boogerman!
4:15 Kevin Conroy got me crying rn
Great video man! I love this comparison style video
I've heard a lot of people mention that they didn't like Rogan's Donkey Kong but I thought he was great. The only voice that didn't work for me was Anya Taylor Joy as Peach. I agree that the movie was mostly just checking the boxes for game references but it was done in a way that made it very entertaining.
Thank you, Brotha 💯 I was waiting anxiously 😂 I’m glad you’re well 😎
So you're cool with the dawg beeting rumors? Whatever dude.
So glad youre back. Missed you the last few weeks
Missed you Mark. Great as always
'Heeey guys welcome back TO the show' gives me a strange happy feeling that I can't explain 😌
Maurice LaMarche is my all-time fav voice over actor. I think, these days, many voice actors are starting to break out in the public eye more. I'm a fan of Critical Role too, and that turned me on to a whole new generation of people I didn't know I was listening to for years.
Ah, The Wizard. One of the cinema greats. Jenny Lewis screaming "He touched my breasts!" was just defining hilarity. Thanks, 80s/90s, and your weird outlook on everything always.
Love your stuff, man. I originally found your Halloween Ends video and I was like "Yeah, this guy definitely knows his stuff". Great content, keep up the great work.
Great video, as always! My favorite part is when they get arrested.
"Name."
"Mario"
"Last name!"
"Mario!"
"OK, what's your name?"
"Luigi."
"Luigi, Luigi?"
"No, Luigi Mario."
I watched the Mario Bros (1993) in the cinema when I was 12… I vividly remember thinking “What the hell was that?”
7:20
I felt that!!!😂😂😂
I remember watching the ‘93 movie as a kid and thinking that it was just a coincidence that the main characters were brothers named Mario and Luigi, it was so weird I didn’t even realize it was supposed to be based on the game
Love the video, good job.
Mark, this was an unprecedented surprise.
Thank you for your thoughts on this, and look forward to your videos in the future.
Also, I’d totally watch a movie with Mark, Kung Pow style lol
Over the past few years Mark's been mixing in more traditional reviews of long-running franchises when a new installment comes out (Halloween, Matrix, Star Wars, Jurassic World, etc.). He also did a Super Mario Bros review a long time ago; I think it's one of his first videos
@@c.moriarty1178 I’m very happy he goes back , and forth. I save so many of his videos, because I’m scared they’ll get taken down with newer movies
Ah David Snyder! I got to work with him on a music video for Halestorm 10 years ago. I asked him about THE SOLDIER and if he was aware that the trucks he designed were the largest moving props ever made at the time. He was not aware of that but very happy at the “nice surprise” that he’d actually set a record for anything.
when i saw the first one, i knew it was broken but, it was like a car wreck i couldnt look away..
all in all the first movie gave me good memories
I saw the original SMB movie when it hit theaters and holy cow did that movie spoil any chances for enjoyment, it was constant annoyance about how almost any of it could possibly relate to the game characters. There were little bits here and there, but it really showed how confused everything was, just baffling. It's also one of the reasons I haven't seen the 2023 version, the 1993 version was really that bad that it spoiled any future movies, regardless of whether they're any good.
They’re opposites, so you’d probably like it. You can’t even find 1993 version legally online. It’s be purged from history.
I worked in the gaming industry and one of the hardest parts is trying to secure an IP to develop a game. It is interesting to see the reverse; when the gaming giant is the owner of the IP and another industry wants to work with it.
On a completely different note, I think I saw the Mario movie back in the 90s but I cannot remember well. I do remember Street Fighter and that was such a mess. It made me so annoyed 😂 that I remember.
The Double Dragon movie was a laughable failure too, which is sad. At one point this franchise was the invincible n°1 of its genre, before being dethroned by Streets of Rage and Final Fight. The flick didn't help DD's relevancy
When you showed that horrific flashback of movie’s past I felt that!!😂😂😂😂
As a real 80s kid super Mario was part of my soul and I loved the games. When I saw this film it baffled me that it was connected to the games. But I still loved it. It’s great.
The new film was good, but I might as well played a Mario game instead.
I'm with you man. I lived through the dark times too. I still have Vietnam style flash backs about Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and Double Dragon.
Voice actors like Tara Strong, Tabitha St. Germain and others should never be replaced, they are Legends.
I still remember the first one and have re-watched a few times. the new one i won't remember or re-watch on purpose.
I’m proud to say that I am an O.G. “Original Gamer” I started with Atari as a kid and moved through just about every system as I grew up. Nintendo, Super Nintendo, sega genesis, sega CD, Atari jaguar, Dreamcast, PlayStation, Xbox, back to PlayStation, and prolly one or two more systems I forgot. Now I’m sitting here waiting for AC mirage to come out.
a lot of info about this I didnt have a clue about. And I´m 44 I thought I new everything about this. Very good episode mark. :)
Honestly the funny thing about the PowerGlove, is that we do all have it's decendants in our homes. Motion controls, something we expect to come standard from Nintendo on all their consoles/handhelds since the Wii. The Joycon is the modern powerglove, you just use two of them.
Also, this video is so good. I love all the research you did for it.
Dont be dissin' da powerglove! Best invention in human history!
Honestly, the Resident evil movies, criminally underrated!
Love your serious movie content as well, Mark. You should do more of this. Like with your Star Wars videos.
Great rant Mark. Thanks.
Rocky Morton directed one of my favourite music videos, Donald Fagen's "New Frontier"
The RiffTrax of Super Mario Bros is one of their best
Always look forward to your videos. Thank you :) you say funny things. Me laugh
I remember this movie well from back in the day and just being confused that Dennis Hopper was Bowser and not looking like a turtle and being terrified of the koopa de-evolution scene.
Let’s a go! Great review! Wahoooo!
I was already out of college when the 1st movie came out, so I was only slightly interested in it itself, I think. Had it been a decade earlier though I would've been all over it. So, I lucked out, because man would I have been disappointed. But it did get my hopes up when I heard it was coming out; I was excited that it could mean a new movie fad of video game movies (Space Invaders, Asteroid and Missile Command being combined into something, Gauntlet especially, maybe even a Captain N movie). But wow did this nosedive that idea; even the commercials for it I recall being disappointing. A shame since so many producers and directors would've loved to have had such hands off dealings with Nintendo. Nice to see it done right, now, even if not particularly memorable.
I was in college. I only remember it because I wondered how they got such big talents to be in it. Other than that I ignored it completely.
Surprised Mark didn’t mention anything about the Power Glove kid’s arrest record.
beautiful man!!!
Why is this the first video I’ve seen from you in months? I have my notifications on.
Always look at the subscriptions page, not the YT home page. YT notifications are garbage, as is the home screen. They decide what you want to see.
I watched the first movie in theaters back then - It changed me ...
If I was only aloud to give one problem with the 1993 film, even as difficult as that may sound, I could do it. The one biggest problem with it is that it does not know or show where it goes. It looks like an adult film but does not go there. It is expected to be a kids’ film but does not go there. It is advertised as a video game film but goes way far away from that. It is introduced as a dinosaur story but is humanoid. Many think that Nintendo endorsed it. Well, they kinda just said, “Whatever. We won’t help or even care.” There you have it. The 1993 film was unique because it was built to be entertaining with no destination whatsoever. 😉
It is sad that star power did not save the 1993 film from failure. Dennis Hopper, Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Samantha Mathis and Fisher Stevens were all excellent and well known actors at the time. 🙃
I felt that closing skit in my soul 🤣😂😅😭
Funny enough, they were in talks for magnum don himself Danny DeVito to play Mario and Arnold Schwarzenegger to play Bowser aka King Koopa in the film originally. That would’ve knocked my socks and I would’ve died laughing if that became reality. I would’ve given 4 stars hands down just for that casting.
Well done video. Nice you reviewed it and didn't give a play by play on an easy route to bash a film. Was good you gave credit to voice actors and make people realize why celebs are used. Good research and smart way to make a video. We need more people , like this, explaining pop culture, the time it happened and how it change. It takes a lot more courage these days to say, hey we didn't have the technology or explain what art or business stage Hollywood was in at that time. We take for granted now cause computers can do it all. And many forget how long and the difficulties it once took to make movies. I hope Mark continues to make smart videos like this than bash movies from the 50s that has no budget or technology. You make great video but I know you can hold a better standard like done in this video
I have to recommend 2012 Ice Age. I just watched this and thought of you during the whole film.I read the comments and hahahahaha.I even posted I was recommending it to you!
Im a 80s kid and yes there are scares. Grate video. So many good memories.😊
The power glove scene worked. I got one for Christmas that year. It was the biggest let down of my life.
Phil LaMarr. Knew him from MadTV before I knew he did voices...so...that's one.
That last joke hit hard as I'm turning 46 today
Oh shit. Is that john stossel! 11:07
Yep.
