That was great! Thank you. Now I am more confident on what to actually do when testing.
You can do it! 👍🏼❤️
Oh man thanks for the shout out. Its a pleasure joining your community. 🎉🎉🎉. This information is valuable to me.
You are so welcome
@wilcandles I definitely need to school myself on wicks. It can be intimidating. I'm learning it's not just about the wax and fragrance. It's not gnna work of the wick isn't right.
@@PeterJDYoung Absolutely ! 👍🏼
Thank you for the tutorial. I was completely confused about wick sizing and why before this. Great job.
Thanks so much ❤️. Let me know how things go. 👍🏼❤️
This video is gold!so many gems dropped!💎…My confidence is so much better to try at it again❤ I appreciate all the wisdom and knowledge you shared! New subbie!❤
Awww… Thank you so much! And Welcome to my channel!! ❤️
Thank you I needed to hear this been testing for six months most of my scents take cd 12 with c6 wax one cd 14 just glad finally getting hot scent

That was great information❤️ Thank You very much❤️
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for making the most useful amazing video. Such an amazing and beautiful personality good luck with everything.
Thank you so much!!
I enjoy your videos! Been thinking of trying C6 for a while. Going to try it soon.
Aww… thank you. Let me know how it does for you. 👍🏼❤️
Sherry, I cannot thank you for all of your help, I wish we were neighbors. I appreciate you!♥️✨🫶
Aww… Julie, that just warms my heart ❤️. Thank you so much!
Another superb video! 😊
Sherry! You are so amazing!!
Awww... thank you Kim Sue
Hmm… I would have to wonder about that one!
I personally believe in staying on the side of quality. I’ve heard of it, but have never tried it. If you do… please let me know how it goes. 👍🏼😋
Thanks for your videos! Very helpful for a beginner. I have a question about a first burn. I made a candle from a kit that came with everything included. The whole container candle melted on the first burn (not just the top layer) and there was mushrooming. I guess this indicates that the wick is too large? Is it undesirable for the entire candle wax to melt each burn? Or should it just be the top layer? thanks
@@lilem1 You are correct. The wick is too large for the container and/or the wax type. Go onto the Candlescience website and look up their Wick Guide. That should help you with gauging wick sizes. Hope that helps you. 👍❤️
Wow what a great video. ❤
I have the 3 wick vessel from Candle Science but in black. It was a nightmare trying to wick that candle. I believe that I am now the owner of every single wick type ever made. 😂😂
What wax are you using?
@@wilcandles I'm using 6006
😂😂😂omg, the same here. I thought I was the only one owning every single wick type and wick size on earth 😂😂😂
@@MSTAMRO_Organic_Skincare Nope im right there with you! Lol
Great video, thank you!! Are those the Candle Science 3 wick tumblers?
Thank you… and yes they are.
Hi there, i’ve just subscribed as I think you do an amazing job, I have really enjoyed the video that you have created done on Wicks.. have you done any testing on Wooden wicks? I look forward to hearing back from you. Kind regards, Vicky King
Thank you so much ❤️. Yes I have done testing on wooden wicks and will do a video. Best wicks I have found are the ones that have a booster. Welcome to the channel 👍🏼
this is my first time watching your video. Have you ever used virgin coconut wax?
No… that’s one I’ve never used., but I hope you find some other information you can use. Welcome ❤️😊
I loved your video so much. Thank you for helping the rest of us. What if the wax I have is not on their list, how do you choose? I have the virgin coconut soy wax from Makesy and I want to try these wicks... The choices from Candle Science that I believe come close are C6 or Golden Brand 454? any suggestions?
Thanks so much and I'm always glad to help. My advice would be to try a test candle or two...using your type of wax. Let me know how that goes and then maybe we can come up with another alternative. 👍
I do not use additives… I add between 6 & 10% depending on my testing for each fragrance. If the candle does well with up to 10%… I add that amount. If it does not hold that amount… I reduce it and test again.
How do you place your wicks? I have trouble centering my wick.
Check out my video on how to make a candle… I believe I demonstrate wick centering. 👍❤️
Can you reuse wax from a candle that didn't perform well?
You can always try it … I’m not sure if the heating temp will alter the France throw. Let me know! 👍❤️
I made a bunch of candles then tried to test later. Big mistake. Well sort of because many of them came out very nice. However I wouldn't advise anyone to do it. Not testing first does not save you money or time because you will find yourself needing to test anyway. I like premiere wicks for my 8 0z jelly jar candles. But even with the success I have had using this wick I would still advise getting a sample pack of wicks off Makesy or whomever sells them and go from there. I tried a .04 wick in a 4 oz tin based off watching someone UA-cam Channel. At first it burned really. It had excellent hot throw but the third time I burned it I could smell fumes. That taught me a lesson. Use UA-cam responsibley.
Absolutely... testing first is crucial!!! Too many factors can go wrong. For example... I can order a batch of wax and another batch of the same wax from the same company a month later and will have an issue with my test results. You must always test... trust me... I have spent a small fortune on testing..LOL
Great Video. Does anyone ever tell you how much you look like Madam VP???
Thanks so much… and YES they tell me that quite a bit..!! 👍🏼😀❤️
Hello. Thank you for to share.
I have a jar. The top diameter is 2" but inside is 2.85
What do you suggest me to do?
Thanks again
Use the 2.85 as your diameter . Do a test burn and see how it does. 👍🏼😊
@@wilcandles thanks
Hi, I am using beeswax and coconut oil (as Im a beekeeper). Do you know of any interactive wick guides for beeswax users? thanks
I have not found an interactive wick guide for beeswax, but this is chart that I go by... The following is a general guideline to help you choose the right wick size for your beeswax candles. However, always keep in mind that several factors may affect the burn, such as wax composition, color, fragrance, and even the shape and size of the container. Hence, it's always recommended to conduct a burn test.
| Candle Diameter (in inches) | Recommended Wick Size |
| --------------------------- | --------------------- |
Small Novelty | #4/0 Square Braid Wick|
Tapers |#2/0 Square Braid Wick|
| 1 | #1 Square Braid Wick |
| Up to 2 | #2 Square Braid Wick |
| 2 - 3 | #3 Square Braid Wick |
| 3 - 4 | #4 Square Braid Wick |
| 4 - 5 | #5 Square Braid Wick |
Note: This chart is a starting point, and adjustments may be necessary based on individual candle characteristics.
I just discovered your videos, they are super helpful, especially to a beginner like me! I’m just starting my testing. I’m using coconut soy wax,and a straight sided 3.19 in wide jar. I started with cd22 wicks, but feel it’s too high. Before I try cd 20, do you think cd wicks are the proper ones to try for this wax and vessel? If not, what would you suggest? Thanks!!
Yes... CD wicks would be fine. Go to the Candlescience website and bring up their wick guide. There you can better determine the right size wick. I promise you...CD 22 is too large of a wick for you. Home this helps. and welcome to my channel.
@@wilcandles thanks so much for the fast response! I tested one with cd18, but the melt pool was off center, does that mean it’s too small? I think I should try cd20? The 18 had a nice size flame, and hit throw was much better than the 22. Thanks
Try double wicking with a CD 6... if that doesn't work... try CD 8 @@lisag6620
@@wilcandles thanks. I was worried a 3 inch diameter was too small for double wicking. I’ll try it. 😄
How do you determine what wick size to double or triple wick a container?
Good question! So on Candle Science they have 2 wick guides, one is the one I talked about and the other is like a spread sheet. They give the recommended wick sizes for double and triple wicking. Let me know if that helps
You are awesome
Oh my... thank you so much.
What about doing testing with wax and wick only. I was thinking that to save on fragrance oil it would be better to try wick and wax to narrow down the correct wick size. Then once i have determined my correct wick size then i could do a tested cabdle with all the variable. Your thoughts please
Great Question Tami…the Fragrance could make a big difference. Candle Science can at least get you close to the wick you need. Sorry 😋 there is really no easy way around it. I know how you feel though… watching all my money go up in flames! 😀😀
@@wilcandles thank you so much for your response. I have also seen videos that suggest making a candle without the wick. once the wick hardens use a wood skewer to make a hole and add the testing wick. I wonder if this is a good idea also. thoughts
I just did my first order of wax supplies to test from a local vendor b/c many videos suggested finding local vendors if possible. The testing process seems confusing. I did order a log book to help but for coconut soy waxes how long do you let your candle cure to test? Do you wait two weeks or only a week for a baseline?
Yayyy to you doing your first order to begin your candle making journey!! You can begin with a 1 week cure time before the first test. After the candle cools from the first test, place the lid back on and allow the candle to continue to cure for another week. Make sure you take notes.
@@wilcandles Wow! Thanks for the quick response. I see that your business address says Ohio. I’m in Cincinnati so I ordered from Candlemakers Supply.

During the section on flickering, a quote from The Uninvited (1944) came to mind. As luck would have it, someone posted a clip of the scene in question:
www.UA-cam.com/watch?v=5D75JsYaKbk
The candles in the movie were taper candles, and their issue was paranormal in nature, but I suspect Lizzie's question is something candle makers have to ask frequently throughout various stages of testing, etc.

Yayyy 👍🏼🎉💗
Hello hello. I am really 😡.
I've been texting a lot of wicks and all of then not even close to be good. You said that there's no perfect candle's but, those candles that they sale in the store burned perfectly. Clean, even and not smoking. There's any secret behind this. This year i see me loosing maybe $300 dollars because everytime that i order a new wick i pay 15 dollar extra for shipping. I see too many different wick guide and all that i do is wasting my money. I will appreciate any help.
Thanks
I will do my best to help 👍🏼. A few questions first… what wax are you using… how wide is the candle jar… and what type of wicks are you trying?
What is the diameter of this jar
Outside diameter is 4" and inside diameter is 3.8"
