Professor DeBacco
Flowering Stage Length
The flowering stage is the final growth stage of a cannabis plant and is when the buds are produced and maturing.
This is typically in the weeks 8-11 of the growth cycle.
Most strains flower in 8-9 weeks of the growth phase.
Some can take even longer (Ex. Sativa dominate strains)
Overall Progression
Flowering Stage Outdoor and Indoor
Outdoor plants will initiate flowering naturally when the plant receives 12 hours of light or less each day which occurs as summer transitions into fall.
Indoor growers can trigger the flowering cycle by reducing the photoperiod to 12 hours a day.
Flowering Subphases
Flower initiation (week 1-3)
The plants continue to grow in physical size
Pre-Female flowers produce pistils (white hairs)
Mid-flowering (week 4-5)
The plant vegetatively will stop growing
Plant focuses more on bud development
Late flowering/ripening (week 6 and on)
Trichome density will increase
Color of the pistils will change
Grower Tips During Flowering Phase
Do not prune plants
Plants should be trellised to support heavy buds
Growers will typically feed bloom plants that have high concentrations of phosphorus, but consider the substrate and be careful how much is added to avoid negative environmental impacts.
End of the Flowering Phase
Flower buds will visually develop quickly toward the end of the flowering cycle.

Thank you for the knowledge. I’m currently on my 3rd indoor grow and this info is GOLD. I have 9 plants going onto week 3 of flower. I actually lollipop them. Learning as I go
Glad to help!
My outdoor plants started showing pistles on July 25 when daylight was near 14 hours. I’ve been flowering my indoor plants under 13 hrs of light to increase DLI. They’ve done swell with 13 hours on. JM 2¢
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Finally the video I was searching for 🥦
Happy to provide content you are looking for!
I would not have gotten through my first grow without your videos. Thank you so much.
Happy to help, please tell others about the channel to help spread the word;-)
Dont over think it,its a weed, thats why its called weed.Just grow out side if you can
great work professor
Glad you liked it!
One of the smartest men I often find myself referring back to. Thanks for all your great knowledge and help
Thanks for the comment and happy to help!
Awsome stuff man. Short and right to the point. Thanks for the knowledge.
That is the goal of this channel;-)
"Do not prune during flowering phase"....well hell, there's a whole bunch of other channels that say the opposite. They say strip the bottom two thirds at flowering onset, and strip out remaining fan leaves toward the end... which is it? I'd much rather not mess with it at all, but everyone was saying that stripping and trimming was vital for maximum bud growth....
I did the heavy pruning, and the kolas are nice and fat and looking good... would they be better and fatter if I had left them alone? This is my second year growing....still trying to learn. I've been smoking samples for a couple weeks now.... still very light and mellow, but getting stronger every week. Should be some very fine weed. White trichomes...still looking for a bit of amber. Harvest any day now.
Totally outdoor grow. FYI. I have no money for equipment or expensive fertilizers, so I use sunshine and horse and cow poop. Also, with a four plant limit (Virginia) I'm trying to grow the biggest plants possible. They got pretty big, but not as big as I want yet. Looking for apple tree size. I figured planting in the actual earth would let the roots grow as long as they want, finding extra nutrients without me spoon feeding them everything they need.
You should be doing most of your pruning in veg to set the plants up for an efficient flowering phase.
@@DeBaccoUniversity Thank you. I'll do that next season! This is my second year, and I did much better this year than last! The biggest improvement for me was switching from containers to growing in the earth. I'm getting at least 10 times the yield I did last year... and I'm honing in on optimal harvest time this year.... watching those trichomes waiting for a touch of amber. I've got a whole bunch of kolas nearly the size of my forearm. There's so much to learn! Thanks for being part of the teaching community! I like your mellow, science based style.
@@DeBaccoUniversity One thing I don't have is a decent space for drying... I'm money poor, (but life rich!). I'm thinking I can put much of my harvest right into a freezer until I have space to dry it properly... or not even dry it, but make edibles and oils from it... does that sound like it would work? I still have a lot of learning ahead of me. I'm kind of old, so I don't assimilate info as fast as I used to.
Thanks for the video!
Best of luck with a successful flowering!
I saw your guest spot in Mr Grow it, and man you’re the real deal! You’re an incredible scientist and a great source of accurate information. Very cool man 🤙🏽
Thanks for watching some of the many videos produced;-)
So my first grow and harvest, outdoors, was phenomenal. It transitioned a little earlier than I thought. But they're ready. And so full. Thanks for the guidance.
You are welcome!
This video is a gold, thank you very much Proffesor!
You are very welcome, glad it helped thanks for the subscription and please share the channel with others!
Thank You SO MUCH for the progression image, i been looking for one all over google....love your videos
Thanks you and your comment and subscription are appreciated!
I was looking all over for the progression image as well. Thanks
On the point of over applying phosphorus: other videos have stated that grow lights suck out phosphorous and giving the need for the extra addition
I would like to see data to support this as why phosphorus?
@@DeBaccoUniversity I would as well; the videos said that the light pulled phosphorus, so I will look those back up, & post the link/s.
Can you explain more about the pruning in flower. I’ve always been under the impression and from experience that pruning in early weeks of flower are ok(strain/pheno dependent)
Usually take lower branches around days 14-21 to help with air circulation and to create larger colas and no larfy buds under canopy. I will take most of shade leaves also. And then again around day 35-42 I will remove some more fan leaves that blocks bud sites etc. I’ve tried both ways over the 30+ years of growing indoors and haven’t seen many negative affects to my plants by doing this. I realise it stresses the plant out though I think it helps control stretch if you do it around day 14. All my opinion of course.
Love your video and information
In short, the pruning you do in flower should be a continuation of what you started in veg. Removing shade leaves is consistent, and in part pruning selection can play a role in timing.
@@DeBaccoUniversity imo, NO PRUNING/TRIMMING, after week 3 of the flower stage, so ALL the plants energy, goes to flowering and NOT to healing/major stress.
Great video
Thanks for the photos of different stages to wk compare
It took sometime to compile them, but glad it was worth it for you and others.
I'm confused, many, many videos state that you can trim and prune during mid flowering ???????
You can, but this should not be your initial trim, only a continuation. Many growers are not aggressive enough in veg as well.
@@DeBaccoUniversity thank you. Been subscribed for a while !
You have great information in your videos 👍👍 can you make one on the topic of how to manage an accidental re-veg there is such little info on the topic 💯 I transitioned my plants from indoors to outdoors a bit too early and they have been going through it 😅 now they look crazy and I'm not sure if I should be removing the old buds or calyxes etc to make room for new buds to form or what?
Unfortunately it just takes time and provide the plants consistency (water, nutrients, lights, ect.) to reduce these other potential stresses.
If its for shure in veg then yes I had two this year and after removing the old buds from the stalk it will blow up with growth in my experience if you let them stay there it will prolong the growth during vegatative stage
But thats my experience mr debacco probably knows something I don't about that after all he's the professor
When we start counting the 8 week?when we switch to 12\12 or when we see the first small flower ?
Can be variety dependent earliest to flip is when the first pre-flowers are seen.
I like the way you teach, learned many things from your videos, keep up the great work sir!
Glad you like them thanks for the comment!
Hahaha like tobacco but not I hope that's your real name with the play on words. Sign me up for a scholarship sir because we got the same personality
The name is unique, however, currently no scholarships available through DeBacco University.
🤔...hi! I am from French Riviera and here stretch start around 1 month after summer( june 21/22 when there's around 16h of light outdoor)so 4th week of July when there is 15h of light...we still have more than 12h of light (but I guess it is more a question of sun intensity!?!)
From what I can see on videos made in California I'm late...looks like plants start flowering earlier than here...10 to 15 days earlier...I should look for Oregon outdoor cause it is on the same parallel...am I imagine things or flowering happen earlier in the south and later in the north?
Have a lifted one and lots of good vibes from France growers family
Latitude can impact day length so this should also be taken into consideration.
Love all the videos! Thanks again for the knowledge 👌🏻🇨🇦
Love the comments and viewers!
You say don't prune plants and I think there obviously must be a sound reason to it.
A regular plant is cross-shaped from above and consists of two large leaves diametrically opposed and above that, another stem with smaller leaves and the flowers on it, in alternate layers of height going up the plant.
My assumption is that the big leaf is the solar panel and engineering support of the bud above and the sturdiness also of the plant and its balance., therefore if you prune those leaves off, it's not helpful to the plant after all the plant knows best about its function surely because of its natural design.
Time to Benefit ratio;-)
I get irritated by peoples voices rather easily when it comes to tutorials and UA-cam videos.
Your voice is not bothersome at all, and I appreciates that about you
Also these videos are extremely insightful and throw and filling in a lot of the gaps I had in understanding some of the later stages of growth.
Much obliged.
0 nevermind voice-to-text ever being what I truly want it to be
Great to know the audio quality is acceptable.
thankyou. first time grower and wondered why my buds were so small but they are only just developing. awesome video
Glad I could help!
@@TheDanhorobin They last 2 months of growth are all about the buds growing .
The plants themselves will slow down . That's because the nutrients are going into the buds
I have been growing for 10 years now and have found that the more you grow the more you know "learn " .
Growing is hands on learning.
Indica finishes faster, than sativa
So with sativa you need to give more time.
Which means if it gets cold at night " belowe freezing " you will have to cover them at night. Frost causes bud rot .
hello dr could i week by week prune 20% of plant during flowering?
As long as it is growing more than 20% each week.
Genetics determines the trigger for plant flowering..some strains can be flowered at up to14 hours of light ten dark..
Good to know the characteristics of what you are growing.
Hey bud. Those pictures in the tittle. What strain are they? I have unknowns and they look identical to the pictures in the title at the start of your vid?
Not exactly sure, check description for image citations to provide a starting point for you.
Every picture is out of focus ????
Sure it is not a viewer related issue? ;-)
@@DeBaccoUniversitylooks fine Maybe he has been dabbing some crc Too much silicate in the eyes ✌🏻🙏🏻
I put my plants after 3 weeks in bloomphase i think it was too early but it looked full grown.
Seems early but best of luck with the flowering phase.
@@DeBaccoUniversityLooks good and healthy!
The only problem is, it's too small...
Greetings from Germany!
In April 1. it's finally legal in Germany, you may gain more viewers and subscribers!
IMHO a little pruning is ok in flower, especially the older big fan leaves are gonna die anyway
Good point, also depends on your pruning method.
Plants recieving 12,66h of light and 11,33h darkness no problemo. Outdated kinda gate keeping Information floting around still
12/12 will ensure flowering, you can modify from there, but trying to provide key information to growers.
An education based structured presentation covering the basics of cannabis cultivation. As an advanced grower with ADHD. I am not the demographic. HOWEVER, I am commenting to show my appreciation for furthering cannabis education. Fellow ADHD folks, this isn't the material for us. There are active grows and music cuts from other creators that will be more suitable for our alternative learning style.
Do not replace educational information with a "show" for entertainment if improving your growing ability is the goal.
Love you content bro you're truly amazing with these plants. I'm about to start my first girl and will be using a lot of your tips and techniques. Would a TSL 2000 be enough for a 2 by 4/10 3 plants? Or what would you recommend.
Start there and take good notes, best of luck.
Well I think if you haven't figured out probiotics and molasses yet I suggest you do very fast also suggest that you get your 30 times microscope if you are not microscope in your bud you are f****** it all up
How do you figure out molasses?
i wanna get stoned with this dude
You are probably not the only one;-)
Outdoor from seed. Removing some fan leaves as buds form. Plenty of "swamp" water with organics.
Not sure what the definition of "swamp" water is?
Good morning. I wanted to ask because I have an LED lamp with adjustable power. In which week of flowering is it best to increase the amount of light so that the flowers swell more? Best regards and I'm glad that such a channel was created :) You provide a lot of useful knowledge.
Commonly late in flower changes in lighting will have the greatest impact on final product.
Took all leaves off everyone
Timing is key.
❗❗❗100.000 subs❗❗❗ Amazing and much needed for such good content! Yeah 🥳🔥❤
Thanks for this!
My first week of flowering I started noticing white powdery leaves , so, I trimmed thankfully it was limited to very bottom of a huge outdoor plant . Then neem oil, I hope my trimming didn’t ruin anything. Please advise
You may also want to consider hydrogen peroxide application... ua-cam.com/video/eHiL4-CW6H0/v-deo.html
I have a question regarding colas. A lot of my lower branches are fattening up with flowers but the top colas there’s rarely any does this is mean I will have a late harvest ? I’m in day 5 of flower (Outdoor grow)
Sounds like a staggered harvest is the way to go for you.
@@DeBaccoUniversity thank you for the response shall I harvest the lower branches when it becomes ready or wait until the top koalas are ready
@@zTezzahin a similar boat. The colas getting less light at plumping up and pistils are turning orange… but people say the pistils regrow 🤷♂️
Maybe we’ll be harvesting the lowest branches first.
What’s interesting is that almost all the trichomes I see on my plant look milky and I’m confused af because the buds haven’t beefed up that much and maybe only 4-5 weeks into flower😂❤
Thee bottoms shoukd be cut out for quality you should only go for well lit tops for maximum quality anything else stripping away from tops.
I don't recommend lolipopping, if ya want a decent yield. You'll get quality from the tops, regardless, A and B buds.
Quality vs quantity debate...
@@DeBaccoUniversity debacco I am using age old organics says from feather meal and fish hydrolysate and super clean filtering I heard from dark horse genetics that age old organics for thee taste guanos and worm castings for terps and he created bruce banner 3 that won high times cup.
How much light does my indoor plant need?
Is it a joke? It's basics 101...! 18/6 on/off in veg and 12/12 to induce flowering...bro!
@@loganleborgne420 I’m so new at this, I’m being fr. Haha
18/6 on/off in veg and 12/12 to induce flowering.
The white hairs on top of my plant are like 90% brown, but the lower tops are still quite white, what should i do ?
Do a selective harvest.
@@DeBaccoUniversity I will, thank you.
Many outdoor plants will start to flower when getting 13ish hours of light a day actually.
This can be the case for outdoor plants.
Ive always heard its 12hrs that will cause flowering. Yet outdoors where im at theyll flower with 10 hrs of darkness
Sometimes it can be the change and also outdoors the sun angle can play a role.
What state or part of the planet your at determines flowering time light cycle, an also the strain or variety .
Some sativas go into November in California or other tropical locations
While indicas can be done end of august.
This all depends on where an what your growing, when you plant them first. An also how you grow, covering at night will induce flowering, some times i have a couple that stress to much from weather an flower.
This is all outside im speaking
Just some thoughts peace fellow grower
I watched so many videos on this and they all have different opinions on pruning plants in their flowering stage.
It depends in part on your growing conditions.
@DeBaccoUniversity I'm a first time grower in 4×4 tent. Everything look good so far. I did pruning because light wasn't getting to lower buds and after they doubled the number of buds getting to the canopy. I still have buds down low that aren't getting light.
I mean...so long as the leafs are still growing back taking off the ones competing for light with bud sites is completely harmless. Instead of making them larger the plant will grow new ones elsewhere but when they stop growing just make sure the grow is not too bushy and humid then leave the rest until harvest.
Simple stuff and genetic based but mistly common sense. We are not leaf farmers.
Keep leaves getting high amounts of light and your plants will perform well.
@@DeBaccoUniversity Yes sir! My plants are amazing. I dare say I have a green thumb.
First grow and Im hooked.
outdoor plants start flowering at 14 hours of daylight, not 12
To ensure flowering, 12/12 light cycle.
@@DeBaccoUniversity sorry, plants will start the flowering phase at 14 hours of light, 12/12 is bro science
I wish I were half as smart as you!....
Keep watching the videos and being observant and your wish will likely come true.
Can I legally Claim to be a professor too?
Unlikely.
you should do a video on plant heterosis
Thanks for the suggestion.
My pistils turned from white to brown and now turning white again. Any help would be much appreciated thank you?
What do the trichomes look like?
I believe it's your stigma that turned brown and I think your seeing the pistils turning white..
It's just means it has reached its sexual maturedy.
@DeBaccoUniversity it has nothing to to with his trichomes, he probaly it's early flower no buds yet.. you check to see amber trichomes at the end.
@@DeBaccoUniversity Thank you. i got a jewler glass to look. im told i have to look for a cloudy look on the trichomes. its difficult for me to see.
Ohio medical program has some real delicacy stuff they got top shelf hand trimmed tops off plants that's thee quality.
If this is in your area you are in a good location.
@@DeBaccoUniversity it is all in ohio certified has different prices for thier top hand trimmed colas versus thier smalls it says from same plant totally different larfy versus thee tops .
@@DeBaccoUniversity my question for you dose age old organics really bring out thee flavor in your produce and dose guanos have a effect on terpenes and worm castings what about all 3 together supposed equal good quality produce I heard.
I've heard that during the flowering phase, the size of your veg plant will double or even triple. Is this the case?
Take a look at this video around the 2:00 mark ua-cam.com/video/eM7_gkTUXHQ/v-deo.html but in short: Indica can grow about 25-50% more vertical height while in flower
Sativa can potentially double their height during the flowering stage.
@@DeBaccoUniversity Thank you for the info. So I basically have to allow double the space (W x H) for whatever size I have when I decide to switch.
This vid is worth a save ... tks so much!
Is it also worth a share? ;-)
Fast, precise and to the point. Great video and info thanks
Glad you liked it.
veg growth after 4-5 weeks stops that is gr82know..
It can depend on variety being grown.
Hortical is not a cookie cutter science.
Thats anything but true
4-5 weeks and youll end up w lil baby buds. I veg a minimal of 10 to 12 weeks. But i want big buds ill cut off more than youll harvest w 4 or 5 weeks of veg
It’s as long as you want it to be unless you have autos
Thanks 👍

I’ve been pruning during flower , mainly fan leaves to slow air and sun to get in . Is this a problem? They buds don’t seem to growing . Did I fuck up 😢
Pruning should be concentrated in veg and simply continued in flower. Pruning (as long as not very aggressive) may not be your problem.
I’ve found that for me I had my led too close for best beastly buds. Backed them off got an inch in 24 hours
But what if you have whitefly infestation on a few branches?
Cut, remove and spot treat.
How much phosphorus can I add before negatively affecting the environment? I’m assuming no bloom boosters obviously but 0/12/20??
Only feed what the plant needs, which is not that much compared to what many others recommend. (160 mg L−1 is the target number.)
