- Vancouver is Canada's dumping ground for the homeless, and some of them come from Alberta's neighbour and other provinces of the country. Perhaps free room and board is the reason for. Vancouver tent city is a good indication of homeless numbers residing in the city and keep increasing.
This is life in Canada.

I worked in DT Vcr for 20 + years and I have to call bullshit on the "you leave them alone, they leave you alone". I was regularly harrased by aggessive beggars including verbal and physical assaults (all incidents were in daytime working hours). Sure, many are people just down on their luck and deserve our empathy and support, but some are violent, criminal d-bags.
Untrue! if you are regular abused, WHY you go there again and again. I don't have any problems with them. Remember one thing that sometimes they talk/yell at themselves, but not the passerby

yeah, definitely not all of them just poor fallen angels. Some are more evil then others. "another man suffered knife attack in DTE" popping up in local news pretty regularly.
Well, comparing to some areas in US, DTE may be considered as "completely safe" (not that I have experience in any US walk around :)
But... one better be aware of surroundings and have good reaction when walking like that in DTE. :) Just in case.
Some people are so sick and may do aggressive things without any reason.
PS: I used to drive through that epicenter of disaster at midnight. My daytime walking usually limited to Chinatown.

You do know that Vancouver is a Canadian city right? The video has nothing to do with the the US.
I have been homeless twice in my life. I started out busking and later resorted to panhandling. I lived on the streets of Vancouver for a few months back in 92 but I have never seen anything like this with the tents and the opioids. I live in a group home in Ontario. I have been to AA and I have been NA. Sometimes I get really depressed. But most days I am happy and life is good. I have schizophrenia and I am on disability. I don’t busk or panhandle anymore. It was hard to change my lifestyle but it was worth it.

As bad as it gets here it is never as bad as being homeless and having a bad addiction. But even hear there is always the risk of getting evicted. The constant pressure to behave and stay out of trouble can be maddening. And the boredom can drive a person to drinking or drugs. I take my meds, collect disability and don’t ever expect myself to ever be employable. The mental health workers come by once a week and that just continues that narrative.

I know it seems like a broken situation there. But I would like to provide some hope. Many people get clean and recover with the help of Treatment and NA. But I also know that a lot of people don’t. I don’t know what it is that makes the difference. Here there are people who don’t want to quit smoking pot or don’t want to quit drinking. But I think hard drugs is a totally different situation. I have no drug connections in my life anymore other than the local pot shop occasionally, but I try not to go there. I was hooked on meth years ago but that isn’t even a temptation anymore. I don’t hang out with people who do that stuff anymore and I left those connections back in a different town. I have been watching invisible people. It’s a show that focuses on helping homeless people. But many of those people are homeless for reasons other than drugs. Many people simply don’t have enough income to house themselves.

Thank you for showing this video. I lost my brother in East Hasting in 2016 to drug overdose. He wanted to die his body was broken down from years of drug taking. We try everything to help him but he loved the lifestyle. He started at 13 and gave up at 47! We miss brother💞💕💔

They are doomed to live like this for the rest of their lives. Modern times.

I've walked down East Hastings at night before after going to the PNE, mostly all I saw were University aged people partying it up.
My grandma said Nothing good happened after midnight, no matters where
I have a friend who lives in this area, and has for many years. He will not leave his home after 9. He has constant horror stories of what is actually happening. Trying to get him out of there, but finances and lack of affordable housing makes it hard!

Ive walked east hastings at night, and i can say is disturbing but its not dangerous, at least nothing happened to me
Thank you for filming this so that people can be aware of the devastating circumstances of our Canadian people living on the streets of Vancouver. I'm an artist and I lived near this area managing an artist building until 2000. To see how the homeless situation has grown in 22 years really breaks my heart. No one plans to grow up and be homeless. And yes, there is an odd sort of camaraderie and sense of honor amongst street people. I got to know many of them personally and grew to love them very much. We need to even out our society and get the priorities straight. Rich people, you cannot get richer. That's it. You are just too greedy. And to the rest of us. We need to stay strong and help wherever we can and I don't mean Sunday visits giving out sandwiches. There needs to be a concerted effort by the citizens of Vancouver to bring attention to the Mayor and council members that this is not good enough. Monies are there. There is enough money. Stop building so many roads and build a valley of tiny houses with education and medical facilities for these people. I don't see integrating them. That chance is gone. They need to be supported in a setting away from the madness of the city. Until they get food, clothing, medical assistance and and education or trade they won't function in our so called society. They are there because the rich people are too greedy. And others just can't see. We all need to love one another more.

I am from Central BC but live in Idaho and honestly, I find it embarrassing and horrifying that we allow the Canadian and US governments to send money overseas while our countries crumble. If that isn't enough to March on both capitals I don't know what is. Shame on all of us US and Canada both.

It's nothing like it used to be. The disabled and poor are treated worse than trash. They're offered needles or assisted suicide. Wait list for housing is 15 years in Toronto. Liveable wages are hard to come by. It's terrifying. Many people are so close to tent life. Canada is a complete wreck.

This is what it is.
Lived most of my adult life in Vancouver, raised my daughter there. Glad I moved away before the rot really surfaced, it was always there but at a fraction of the filthy decrepit Blade Runner like city it's becoming. Never going back, except the overflow makes it here to Vancouver Island turning our little cities into Walking Dead episodes. The answer is to be more tolerant, allow more drugs and very little intervention or rehabilitation. It's like killing them gently, with kindness and empathy. I see these lost souls when driving home at night from work, bent over at the waist, knees buckled, swaying back and forth, a garbage can their only anchor to this life. Its only getting worse as planned for Agenda 21, now Agenda 2030 or the Great Reset where "You will own nothing and be happy".
Thank you for sharing your thought. There is nothing much we could do about it. Just wait and see our new mayor and city's councilors have somethings to improve this hood.

Nowadays street homeless and are fentanyl addicts, and not capable of doing anything no matter how simple it is. Street encampments are open air drugs markets brewing all sorts of crime. Majority of them will die from fentanyl overdose, or drugs related violence. Second hand fentanyl smoke can easily kill you in no time. Street homeless gradually destroy everything around themselves. We will never reduce street homelessness without reducing the amount of fentanyl drug available on our streets. If they can afford, they smoke fentanyl up to 100 times a day. That's how all these fires are started. Homeless advocates are mentally stuck in Pathological Altruism, and all they do is enabling fentanyl addicts remain as close as possible to their fentanyl dealer.

Why do people feel the need to lie and claim these areas are safe? It's dangerous, and they need help. Anyone who's poor and addicted to drugs will resort to violence when the desperation kicks. This is a good video but wow the propaganda bull needs to stop.

Well. Now a days, homeless are resorting to random violent acts and thievery. Being on the bottom of a socio economic ladder plus inflation equals unsafe situations for everyone... I certainly would not travel the DTES unless I had to and I was there at night once, it's dam scary... Sure it's not NYC but that's ok, I'd still like to stay alive anyways...

LAW-ABIDING....when the top cops are responsible for the sexual explotation of the very citizens they are to protect. When police turn a blind eye to organized crime and fellow officers indiscretions, we begin to see moral decay and helplessness in our communities. The clearance rates, coverage and crime severity rate in this province appalling. Sadly you are mistaken about Vancouver and the men and women who took an oth to serve and protect. They serve and protect themselves. My challenge to every citizen in this country, audit the police in your community one day a week for 6hrs, make it an adventure. Keep your distance and record what you see and hear. Go home play it back, in your m8ndcremove the uniform and ask yourself. Who is the bully, the unreasonable, who pushes boundaries and elevates the emotional climate to then, harm, belittle, shame or kill it's citizens. To be clear, I am describing a culture, many members deserve our admiration and respect. Sadly though when members turn a blind eye to discrecible conduct they are now just as guilty. Stay safe
I will NEVER trust a street person. We have so many programs in my area and they reject them. They walk into my neighborhood early morning stealing anything from brooms, garden rakes, to even children's toys like scooters and bikes. I'm done. They yell and get aggressive and scare my little one sometimes. My compassion is gone. Step on my property and you're gonna leave with severe limp.

@@ExploreVancouverCanada there are many people who have their children's toys, bikes, work tools in their yards in my county no one is worried because we respect each other and their property. So no not everyone has to watch their belongings. Plus it is a very 2nd amendment area so it is extremely safe.

How is this different than LA, SF or Seattle? I take offense to people trying to somehow say that homeless people in Canada are somehow superior to homeless people in the United States. Ridiculous. Homelessness is tragic no matter where and it's ALWAYS due to mental illness and addiction.

I'm so sorry for Canada. Most things about a good Canada are not true, Including clean cities - beaches, and forests. It's a big lie. The first time I arrived in Vancouver in 2018, I was shocked. As soon as I left the airport door, I saw tissue, disposable glasses, and other garbage left in the city. The further I went, the more I saw them. Before I moved to Canada, I lived in Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Serbia, The United States, and for a short time in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Netherlands, Germany, and England, but I have never seen the amount of garbage that people leave in different Canadian cities. Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec are no less than Vancouver. Canadian and Canada Governments don't care about this tragedy. I think everything that says about Canada as a clean and powerful culture is not true. You don't need to travel to Canada to see this. Just watch some videos about walking in downtown Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec. You will find the truth. Impossible for you to walk in a Canadian city and you don't see the dark side of that. Everywhere you will see garbage. You will never see this in Europe, Australia, the United States, Japan, and Korea. This amount of waste is not even seen in Malaysian, Indonesian, or Thailand cities. It is impossible for you to use public transport and not see a lot of garbage at stations or on the route. You will be surprised to find a lot of garbage even in the woods - by the rivers and on the beaches in Canada. I wish the Canadians woke up and had no enmity with their country. I randomly looked at videos from downtown Manchester and Concord in New Hampshire - Philadelphia - Detroit - Chicago - New York - Baltimore - Denver - Atlanta - Nashville, and Knoxville in the United States, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, and London in the UK, Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Toulouse in France, Frankfurt, and Hamburg in Germany, Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane in Australia, Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka in Japan, Busan, Seoul, and Incheon in South Korea, Toronto - Quebec - Montreal - Winnipeg - Calgary - Vancouver - Victoria - Ottawa and Thunder Bay in Canada. we should be fair. The bitter truth must be accepted. Without any exaggeration. Completely impartial. I have to say that I didn't see a single piece of garbage in any of the other country's videos to convince myself. Without exaggeration, in all Canadian cities, you will find a piece of trash or garbage on the ground less than every hundred meters. It must have an important reason. I do not know. But this is a bitter truth. You can try. This country should be brought closer to its exaggerated claim. Certainly, some Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and even Malaysia are much cleaner compared to Canada. Of course, we should not forget that Canada claims to be one of the 10 cleanest countries in the world. And cities like Vancouver and Toronto claim to be one of the 5 cleanest cities in the world.
I can't read all but please don't look at a single spot then claim for the whole thing.
@I I I find the biggest garbage problems in Canada are;
not enough public garbage cans;
they don't empty them often enough (they are almost always full and overflowing);
and not near enough staff out there looking after it all.
I live in Nova Scotia and our household garbage is only picked up every 2 weeks.
Yes Canada was s beautiful and clean country decades ago.I was with my husband in the 80's in Canada and i've never seen such things in this Video.
Canada used to be a wonderful country. It was very clean with friendly people, always hopeful of the future. Until 1972 and trudeau, sr. He flung open the borders to the third world and that was the beginning of the end. Fifty years later , this is what you get. Filth. Crime of all kinds. Political correctness. Woke-ism. The average IQ has dropped considerably. Without change in government, Canada is as good as dead.

Lived here over 20 years also ..... Not all of the tents are "homed" by the unhoused. Some park there for 11+ hours selling drugs & then go home. Then come back again the next night and they are super imposing and are getting way more aggressive.

Corner stores and banks are pretty much all you’ll find. A couple bars but no other types of businesses.

i lived in east van when i went to elementary school(east hastings elementary) in the late 90s, moved to the burbs for a year or two and then moved to alberta.
i came through vancouver on drives during covid lockdowns but usually at night so i just got a glimps and smell from the tent cities.
when i came back in july this summer i was blown away how bad two areas in perticular are. ive never seen so many people openly shooting and smoking on the side of a major street and the sidewalks in this area were unwalkable there were so many drug addicts.
this city went downhill bad since it held the games. bc needs mental health facilities and to put addicts in controlled rehab/detainment facilities. they litterally cant help themselves.
i do like that i can camp damn near anywhere tho makes it easy to rest after an mtb ride lol

We need a NEW RIVERVIEW HOSPITAL closing the old one in 2012 was one of the biggest mistake the government ever made. What Liberal policies do is not helping this huge growing problem with these mentally ill drug addicts. They need to be arrested and forced into mental care. Our taxes is only sustaining them at there terrible self destructive behaviour...

I went to Vancouver during the 80's to visit my friend. Then, one Friday evening, he drove me here. We didn't get out of the car but this video brings me back. The only difference is there were more women on that night, it's safe enough for them to walk or make a living on these streets.

It was the early 70s and my 1st visit of canada was how beautiful and clean ,they drove us all around and we must of went around these parts cause all I remember was the cleanlesness...what a shame
Shameful...but things are changing in decades
Visiting Vancouver, and seeing these scenes, I came to the conclusion that modern capitalism, savage, concentrating and excluding, will never absorb this group or class of people in the labor market, and not just in this city but throughout the world. They are doomed to live like this for the rest of their lives. Modern times.
Outstanding job of showing people what Vancouver's infamous East Hastings Street is like. I personally have walked along this street on many occasions by myself and didn't feel unsafe, but I minded my own business and was respectful.

É uma área muita vasta , a política do Canadá não ajuda muito , tem um documentário legal de um cara que se chama Aaron sobre esse problema nessa cidade. Comparado com Europa esse lugar é horrível , eu moro na Itália e apesar dos problemas as cidades não são assim feias como essa do vídeo… deve ser horrível viver em um lugar assim .

Fortunately, Vancouver doesn't get very cold in the winter. It has the mildest climate in Canada. Winters are very rainy, though. Regardless, nobody should have to live on the streets in a first world country like Canada.

I was born and raised in Vancouver. Lived in Gastown from 1971-1973 then headed to the West End. Downtown was nothing like this. Everyone had a hotel room, no-one was living in tents. If I hadn't been told before, I would NEVER have guessed this was Vancouver now. How sad that the 3rd largest city in the country can't come up with a solution to this. These poor, poor people.
Now, City's workers keep cleaning up the street , hoping things will gradually change

There are so many unused buildings & malls that could temporarily house these people while at the same time job investors are looking for people to work for them. Job training & housing assistance is all these people need to get back into the workforce. How is this so difficult to figure out?

And, FYI, the reason I lived there was bcuz I was a junkie...and I was able to get it out of my system after a year or so and quit cold-turkey. I am also elderly now (68) and ended-up having a very productive & very successful life. So, your analogy of "once a junkie always a junkie" is blatantly wrong. But the 70s was a different time, I guess. You didn't need to jump down my throat just for making a comment on my memories of Gastown. That was definitely uncalled-for.

This is beyond out of control. The thing that pisses me off about homeless is they leave there trash everywhere. They now feel entitled and have lost respect because they lost everything. I understand...but pick your trash up!!! You don't have to live like pigs . It is a shame that things are this bad but have some decency. The city can hand out trash bags. This homeless thing is an explosion waiting to happen .

The issue with trash is a city responsibility not the homeless, the lack of public washrooms and accessible garbage cans that get emptied regularly is almost impossible to find. I’m sure I’ve inadvertently contributed to the issue by trying to shove an empty coffee cup into an over flowing can…get mad at the Vancouver government who refuses to bring forth any sort of solution of substance, not the homeless.
There is a reason why long time resident taxpayers are giving up and leaving Vancouver and it is well portrayed here. Like a recovered addict told me, most actually like that lifestyle and don't want to change. Those that do and stay sober are rare but very precious. Those that don't want to change should not be taking over the streets as if it belongs to them and be made to clean the streets to keep them occupied. Vancouver is filthy enough. As for real homeless people who do not do drugs but have ended up in the bowels of Vancouver, the city should be helping them first before they get flushed with the ones refusing to change. It should be pretty easy to triage the repeat offenders and bring back the city to what it once was.
Very reasonable. Drugs are Not homeless, you have extra money to do drugs but homelessness does not has enough money to pay rent/home

I Grow so tired of seeing this type of blight, i live in Nanaimo and the downtown here is starting to look similar to this. Despite local resident's objections there is even a homeless shelter that went in a couple years ago right across the street from where i live. and places like that are little better than life on the streets.

If they're harmless and good people and won't harm you as you say they are move a couple of them in with you. Be a good Samaritan and make an example of it. You won't because you know they will steal you blind and cut your throat before you even know it. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THESE PEOPLE ARE CAPABLE OF!!!. Stop assuming. The parts saying this place is safe and no one is going to mug you...this isn't doing anyone any public service. I lived in that area. I saw knives pulled and my friend was robbed. You have to be very careful and only go to this neighborhood if you have to.

Justin Trudeau is so fake. He says everything is fine, but you can see the reality from this video. Nothing is fine. Canada is in absolute crisis. I'm saying this before they make it illegal to speak.
Drug-addiction is an ubiquitous problem in the States, but on the West Coast it's more of a 'homeless' problem because the drug-culture there can't come to terms that drugs are a problem.
Thank you for understanding the West Coast climate attracting more and more. One thing I want to share with you that the drug overdosed killed average 6 to 7 daily in BC, if this situation is a drug-crisis they should be gone died within 6 to 12 months, but the numbers are still here and keep increasing. So complex.
From Philippines.. We are on world crisis. Same here a lots of survivor.. But the rich can't feel the crisis..

Yes, there are many of them, but mostly privately owned. They even have multi-story car parkades that sit more than half empty, but again they’re also mostly privately owned.
Some do have shelters and some don't. There are newcomers as well.
I visited Vancouver many years ago. There were a few rougher areas but nothing like this. I know rents are insane there, but who would want to pay $3000 to $4000 rent to live in these areas? 6 roommates sharing 2 bedrooms? How do the homeless support themselves? Panhandling? Illegal activities? Are some working but can't afford rent? I'm on the east coast and homelessness is increasingly here as well. It seems almost hopeless now. Will things ever improve?
Most homeless in Vancouver don’t need to support themselves. They can get almost everything they need for free. Everything except hard drugs, of course.
They don't and can't work for the most part . How can you work if you're taking fentanyl. Side note check out Kensington in Philadelphia.
Not all are homeless, some has housing along/around the blocks and local charities daily donated food/supply/clothing.
The homeless get welfare or disability cheques if they have an outreach worker or social worker help them through process. If not they are left to stealing, prostitution, and perhaps for a few family members help out but I doubt it.
Get rid of treudope and you will see a big difference

Thanks for the look .. this has been going on since christ was playing in the sand with a donkey ... we just hide it out of sight, and now the bleeding hearts are encouraging the life style ... some of my high school friends ended up with that lifestyle and in few cases, it was others that misled,, but in most cases authors of their misfortunes. It does not share wealth but instead polarises it. Hence the degradation of public services including education. Most of the manufacturing, capital and technology went to the cheapest source of production ie China which does not reciprocate and does not practice free trade.
I don't know much about "free trade" but if you want to buy some stuffs cheap, then they are made in china. Don't forget about shitty quality.

This is so much BS, basically saying none of these homeless are like the homeless in the USA, and are mostly nice people, ignoring the fact some are violent criminals. What nonsense saying there are no bad neighborhoods in Vancouver, this is definitely a bad one. I would say it looks the exact same as our Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles.

Vancouver is tiny compared to Los Angeles, 3 million metro, compared to 20 million metro, and you have many homeless, which some of them are criminals. They used to be just on East Hastings, but now you see them in other parts of the city. You are doing the city a disservice by putting a positive spin on a growing problem.

This condition, by our definition, is depressing. We don't have this kind of situation at all in our country. We'll never think of being robbed or pickpocketed when we go out into the street even after midnight. That applies to girls as well. We have very strict laws against drugs and some restrictions on alcohol consumption in public. Homelessness and cadging are literally non-existent here.

@@milanbasic9257 I am in Singapore. Here, you won't see people sleeping by the roadside nor in the subway stations. No one will mug you as you walk alone in the street in the dark. And, you will also never see zombie-looking drug addicts standing in the way of people walking on the pavements. You have to be here to see the difference yourself. People here don't think the West is conducive for decent living now.

It’s surprising to me being both Canadian and Mexican how people can afford drugs, tents, laptops, iPhones, and so much more but not paying rent in a shared space with someone else, everywhere I go I see HELP WANTED signs, so it’s insane to say there are not jobs because they’re clearly there, people are just too lazy to take them and they’re used to be given everything, there are no homeless tent cities in Mexico even when real poverty exists, I think Canada just became a complacent country with no real backbone and these are the consequences

Driving through Mexico City there were tons of homeless. It was 2002 and my disposable cameras didn't pick up the rows of people sleeping on their blankets that they carried rolled up during the day. Every grassy section was packed with people. Empty pop bottles everywhere because they didn't have to pay deposit for them so no one picked them up to earn money. I don't know if that changed. But there was definitely homeless in Mexico City in 2002 that I passed on the cheapest bus ever. But no tents that I could see. Had to be stuff that could be carried with them
@@PhoenixStorm713 I lived in Mexico City from 2007 til 2019, the city in enormous compared to Vancouver, I lived south, north and west, and as you mentioned never a tent city because it’s prohibited, a lot of poverty for sure! and people who actually want to work and need help, every country has its struggles, I am just amazed every time I have to go through E Hastings street and / or other places where there’s lots of people using drugs right on the streets, instead of saving that money to get better and improve their lives, it’s heartbreaking because it’s supposed to be a much better country.
Here you need to pay $200/week for a room in my city, some students pay $160/week for a room with no window, and can not have 3 meals per day.
To live in the cheapest share houses, you still need to pay $160/week/person.
This is so called rich countires, sure there are many people have $10,000,000 or more. 😀

Im 45 and remembered East Hastings as a place full of people with addiction and poverty. They were never aggressive though. And now, it's the same.
