After couple weeks of decamping in DTES by the City's and Cops, the problem remains the same s.h.i.t. except there is less sense of urine smells. These guys are rooted here for decades and have nowhere to go....dislocating them is not the solution for this complex complication.
The Downtown Eastside (DTES) is a neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. One of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, the DTES is the site of a complex set of social issues including disproportionately high levels of drug use, homelessness, poverty, crime, mental illness and sex work. It is also known for its strong community resilience, history of social activism, and artistic contributions.

so many commentators have no idea how much they would end up like these people with no place to stay and no job. Once your body succumbs to malnutrition that you can't perform a shift for a job or maintain appearance and "working" people stop helping you and druggies rob you, you have nothing but struggling to cope or you commit suicide.

You do know these people that you said many would end up just like this without any jobs don’t exist in so many parts of the world right? I mean this happens mostly in the West and third world countries. It happens even in developed western countries because people allow this nonsense liberal thinking that a bit of drugs are ok. NOT ok in many countries. You know where I live has ZERO tolerance to guns and drugs of any kind? This wanting to “experiment” doesn’t include drugs at all. Drugs aren’t widely available either. Of course people would want to experiment if they are widely available. Way too casual. Doing drugs here is equivalent of committing a murder here. This too casualness is exactly why most western countries have this problem. And corruption is rampant in North America. Anyone can be bribed. Do you think this nonsense exists here? And I don’t live in authoritarian country either. It’s G7 country. Those countries that imitate America would go down hill just like American liberal states with wokeism no doubt. You know why? They got no morals. They are too greedy. Imagine running a country without morals with top 1% of billionaires running the country without a care for their own people who are poor. Yeah they open up the damn southern “borders” letting these illegal aliens even though their own people are suffering. Can’t get more stupid than that. I despise Biden and I feel sorry for most Americans. This is why Canada should not imitate any American liberal nonsense wokeism and should boycott the woke movement. Seriously. I lived right in Vancouver for years. Not anymore. The city is dead.

50 tysięcy poszukiwanych w stosunkowo niewielkim i gęstym w miastach, kraju...

I used to live nearby actually for a few months. Right near the corner of the intersection between Union Street and Main Street. Often I walked up this way to get to Gastown and seeing what I witnessed as I do here in this video shocked me. A man told me one evening that he used to live under the bridge near my living area for the best part of 20 years. I couldn't believe it. He thinks that this community is practically holed up and kept where they are today because the police don't want them to branch out into other areas. Now I could be completely wrong, but in all honesty, because this was a man who suffered greatly for so long living near this area, I'd be inclined to believe him.

I have a solution to the garbage issue. Once a week the city should offer $5 for every bag of garbage picked up. Only homeless need apply.

They tried doing that with plastic water bottle recycling, Ppl start buying cases just to empty them and return for $$ - the same would happen for trash, creating it to get the $$ or just talking out of already collected bins.

It's not just drugs, it's mental illness as well. The mentally ill people were turned out of provincial hospitals and left to fend on their own. UNTREATED. TO SAVE MONEY. That happened in the '60's. I don't expect anything to be done about this problem. People have become so self-centered and greedy that few will identify this as a problem needing to be addressed. As far as Vancouver goes, the problem could be partially addressed by building 2 or 3 rehabilitation treatment buildings in Richmond, where hundreds of thousands of people brought questionably sourced money with them to get landed immigrant status in Canada before Hong Kong returned to China. The Canadian government asked no questions about whether the millions brought to Canada were clean/dirty money (proceeds of crime). In light of the casino hearings, we saw that hockey bags full of $20 and $100 bills were cashed into the River Rock Casino in Richmond (money laundering?).
Money has to be spent on beefing up the money laundering and proceeds of crime legislation. In the late '70's Federal legislation was enacted allowing, amongst other things, seizure of property attained by crime. In BC the feds left millions on the table by not applying for seizure of the dirty property, real or personal. Then BC enacted laws that gave them authority to seize real and personal proceeds properties. These were civil, not criminal, seizures and the proof was easier to obtain. Instead of the onus of "beyond a reasonable doubt" as with criminal cases, the Crown only had to prove "on a balance of probabilities" that the seized property was paid for by the proceeds of crime. In Vancouver, the federal justice department seemed to lack interest in seizures of proceeds of crime and the provincial government seized and had forfeited the property to the provincial government. The lack of interest on the feds part was never explained to me.
Surely if Richmond residents don't mind living in a place with a high earthquake risk, they will take the 'risk ' of providing care for mental health sufferers and drug addicts to get their lives and health back. And not just Asian people but all BC people.

Moved from Vancouver in '93. Even then, there were times when "I shouldn't be here" was a thought that crossed my mind. Been in Hong Kong and China for 30 years, and have never, regardless of the city or time of day, felt as unsafe as I might during Welfare Wednesday in East Hastings. Now it seems that it's no longer restricted to every second Wednesday. So sad to see.

A complex and distressing problem. I would like to see the subject of personal economics taught from primary school onwards. My family and school always warned me of the dangers of wasting money and it is an important, if difficult, lesson to learn. From the moment you leave home, the bills come at you from all sides. That's my view, I am not sure if anyone will take any notice.
