Life of Homelessness in Vancouver Canada - East Hastings Street, the 5-Block Stretch

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 4 чер 2023
  • Explore Vancouver Canada's Worst Corners as "Hell on Earth" portrayed by the Conservative Leader PP.
E Hastings 5 block stretch is from Dunlevy Ave to Abbott St, where the most homeless people hang out in 24/7.This is unofficially considered as an invisible perimeter, so the City's has the better controlling and enforcing. This strip is part of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside and Chinatown.
The DTES is the site of a complex set of social issues, including disproportionately high levels of drug use, homelessness, poverty, crime, mental illness and sex work, and the area began a rapid decline due to several factors, including an influx of hard drugs, an epidemic of HIV infection and drug overdoses. DTES led to the declaration of a public health emergency with critical issues include opioid overdoses, especially those involving the drug fentanyl; decrepit and squalid housing; a shortage of low-cost rental housing; and mental illness, which often co-occurs with addiction.
    This is life in Canada.

It's sad and heartbreaking to see. They are victims of a broken system. I hope government will take the step to make correction, take care of the sick, treat them well and not let them wonder around being sick and unable to take care of themselves. Vancouver Public Health must do something, take them in for treatment.

Not going to happen - you need to be realistic No helping these folks when anyone tries they are met with resistance , these folks do not want help they want money for drugs , when given an SRO they bring in the drugs and destroyed it fires etc, In California the governor has spout 7 thousand on each of one them to no avail . these folks have to die or stop using drugs , Canada has lots and lots of social programs , it does not matter. they like living on the street when you asked them they tell you they love living on the streets. Understand these Drug addicts have used their own family who have refused to take them in.

I live about 90 minutes south of Vancouver across the international border. Around ten years ago, my rent was 800 a month, but now I have to pay 1700 for the same one bedroom. Cost of living is one of the problem besides drugs, mental illnesses. But few people noticed that.

The essential freedom of individuals. We cannot simply blame our actions on external factors or circumstances, but must take full responsibility for them. This means that we must own up to the consequences of our actions, even if they are unintended or unwanted. As free beings, people are responsible for all elements of themselves, their consciousness, and their actions. That is, with total freedom comes total responsibility. - Jean Paul Sartre

I bumped into this neighbourhood back in 2014 when I visited my sister living in Vancouver. That was a huge shock for someone from Japan where drug addiction is basically nonexistent.
When a drug addict talked to me on the bus and asked me for change to buy ‘painkillers’ , I had no idea what was going on and I genuinely thought she was ill.
After these experiences I became interested in DTES and have read several books about the community and learned about the activities by VANDU, the safe injection sites, the situation around the overdose deaths from fentanyl, etc… All of those were mind blowing for me.
It looks like the neighbourhood has gone worse in recent years and it makes me wonder if any of those activities were helping…

Vancouver has a huge population of Asian heritage. Many immigrated from China and India and many are second or third generation, born in Canada. From a demographic perspective, if drugs and homelessness affected all people equally, then they should be in these images too. But they are not. Why is that? Why is it that the people who are overdosing are predominantly white and in their 20-40's, some even in wheel chairs? And what are the people standing around, who do not look intoxicated, doing? Are they dealers? I think there are some important questions that need to be answered as to how people get into such hard drugs in the first place, and why it does not seem to affect all in the same way.

In this area of B.C Our government has spent hundreds of millions on this fentanyl crisis since it began and despite everything this it still the result. Clean needles, safe injection cites, safe supply, legal drugs, etc etc have all failed, these people need tough love, they need to be taken off the street forcefully and taken to places like the old Riverview hospital, but the odd for this change are slim thanks to the reform (Bill C-75) when this was passed they had no idea just how dangerous hard drugs have become i B.C hence this "revolving door system" for criminals....

I have a solution to the fentanyl crisis. I can almost guarantee it will work and save many of these homeless people, the majority of whom are severe drug addicts. The solution is simple: If the police catch you selling fentanyl or other hard drugs, the first offense is free. You are warned. You are on record now. Then you are released. But if they catch and convict you of doing it again, they chop off your left hand. A third offense? They chop off the right hand. No need for a penalty for a fourth offense, because now that you have no hands, it will be hard to be a professional drug dealer. You will probably become homeless and have to live in a cardboard box yourself. Suddenly there will be almost no drugs available, and then some of these people can stop being zombies and become people again, and maybe some will even find their feet again and stand up on their own. Does this sound like a very cruel or harsh solution? It's harsh and cruel for sure, and it's meant to be. But why are we so concerned with the welfare of repeat criminals when they are actively killing our people? I bet that almost everyone will decry my suggestion, calling me a hater and a heartless fiend. All I have to say is that drug dealers have already declared war on our society, and we are fighting back with clean needles and methedone? We know those methods don't work.

i agree, but sometimes its not really that simple. I was 15 and held at gunpoint and to cope i tried it, but it obviously leads to worse. But the real issue is the police watch a 15 year old girl going and buying fentanyl and doing nothing about it . Its not illegal ..I was addicted for years, its legal for a 12 year old to shoot up. And she has a "right" to clean needles. Its a sick sick society. I recognize and know personally most of these ppl. They have been severly tortured in ways most ppl dont understand, even me i went to fentanyl to cope with almost being murdered. I luckily got clean but the fact that we are continuing to ship more people to Vancouver, they have no room. Its so expensive, even non drug addicted people sleep in tents to save money, then the gov. comes in and says its basically illegal on all streets except hastings, so they end up trying shit and etc. Its disgusting they have 5 6 7 desginer stores on a street and a budget of a billion for condos but have not enough room or respect to get them help. I went to go get help at 17 because i woke up screaming from withdrawl, and they taught me how to USE SAFE, offered me nothing else said i should keep going a couple more days for subaxone. and also make 1400$ per safe supply prescription. They want you addicted and high. Should not exist period if any child like me wants fentanyl or tranq they should be locked up

These people need help, but not the kind they want. Society wants them to join society, and they Society to supply the things that help them maintain their lifes choices.

  • @Lili-Benovent

    DIFFERENT EYES Lili
The rat infested holes in which we Derros dwell
Fighting for our daily bread with us as much as them
For others looking at our lives perceived as living Hell
If we can find an alley, with a corner safe and dry
Then we are Kings for just a night and we don’t question why
We’re creatures of the shadows from which existence stems. -
The city is a cruel Lord and all we have is time
There’ll be no hand to lift us up, no help to find a bed
We waste our time wandering, with others of our kind
Talking dreams, opportunity, reality and crime
And those among us jackals, put their brothers on the spike
Promise bliss for just a time, escape from life, sublime. -
It’s all our fault we are told, by people who don’t know
Just get a job and buy a house but none will ever employ
A black who can’t afford to eat, a white who’s tired and slow
For this is what the streets give us and Winter is the worst
The frozen parks, incessant rain, back in our holes we go
We try the subway, bus stations; move on, the middle class comes first. -
Charity comes with a hook, the drone of pray to God
We’ll give a little, not a lot, endeavour to change your life
To one of fierce obedience to Jesus in the sky
And if you let us take control for one small meal a day
You’ll struggle on and on through life and then one day you’ll die
A mansion awaits you in the clouds, if you pray and pray and pray. -
But Spring brings hope, all Nature’s good, to creatures all awake
Nature provides enough to eat, a nest a tree a cave
But man must find their own abode and man exploits the poor
So back into the tents on streets us Derros slink once more
And every day it seems there’s more, one paycheck from the street
This lucky country prosperous once, now greed’s a festering sore.
