  • A little change of pace as I was a passenger on B-Team Bob's boat this time. We went out for a February walleye trip on Lake Erie. We talked about some walleye trolling techniques and of course I busted his chops the entire time.
Capt. Ross Robertson has made his complete living chasing walleye as a full time professional angler for more than 20 years. Through the years he has worn many hats including time as a fishing guide, boat salesman, TV host, outdoor writer, product designer, tournament fisherman, speaker, radio host and podcaster to name a few.
Ross fishes ice-out to ice-up on the Great Lakes. He spends the majority of the year walleye fishing on Lake Erie’s Western and Central basins.

When the water is that cold do you find one bait works better then another? I know every day is different and you should let the fish tell you what they want how ever what baits would you start with when the water is below 38 degrees? When trolling at 1.1 MPH how much does the action change from one lure to another? I am heading up to Lake Erie this weekend and have never fished when the water is this cold.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The reason we all carry so many different ones is because the preference changes daily if not hourly. My #1 Coldwater bait off all time is a dhj12 husky jerk, but we use a bunch of lures

Ross have you ever fished with Capt. Casey Priscoe?? That would be a show. Arguably, two of the best smack talkers of all time...and great "big water" fisherman.

I was out on Feb 20 th near Huron and had some sheet ice that had been broken up. It was an issue with the planer boards not horrible ,but it would get caught on them at times . Do you have any answers for preventing that or is it really a non issue and just wait till it eventually comes off the board . We ended up getting plenty of fish, but the ice hitting the boards and dragging them back was a headache

Chased them all over looking for bait. Focus on the bait...not the depth

A fat 21" is a Wisconsin wall hanger 😂👌. Every walleye angler dreams of 30+ inch fish, they are amazing to see in person. My biggest is 31"/11lbs in December from lake Michigan. I hear they get over 15lbs in the spring 🤯

Been doing it for 2 years and 28 3/4 inch is my biggest, got it jigging the Detroit river.
