    Hey Ryan! This is an awesome video. I have been trying to improve my DB work consistently now and seriously for about 3-4 months. I am tapping out at around 110-115 bpm.(16th notes). I can go a few bars before my feet are off to the races and control is lost. But I just watched this video and practiced the first 2 variations for about 20 minutes, took it back to the practice set and 110 felt so much easier. That motion of toes on the floor heel up technique translated perfectly to the pedals. Would you say going through that motion away from the kit consistently will improve my speed and more important control?? Thanks again!!

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  3 роки тому

      Depends on how hard it is for you. If you struggle with any of the versions then you should probably do at least that one daily for a couple of minutes or until you get fatigued, until it’s no longer a problem. Even if these are easy they’re a good warmup before actually playing. Just run through the progression over the span of a few minutes before getting on the pedals.

    Great video, I play the single kick pedal. I do not think I will move to the double kick pedal mainly because of the style of music I play. I do not think the double pedal will be needed. But I want to build the muscles in my shins to help build speed and then hopefully control with working with my timing as well. I know that the foot work is huge with fills and roles.

    I can go much faster on the floor (140-150) than on the pedals (120ish) and I was wondering what pedal spring tension best emulates what we do on the floor? As in what spring tension makes it feel like there are no pedals? Thanks

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  6 років тому +2

      I'm going to answer your question first and say that the spring tension that feels like the floor is the loosest possible tension. Then, I hope you pay attention to the rest of this because that won't serve you well in the long run. 150 is not actually very fast. If you want to play really fast, 200+, you probably need some help from the pedal, which you'll really only get with a spring tension tighter than the loosest possible setting. It will not feel like no pedal, but that is the thing that makes pedals cool. They let you play things you couldnt play without them. watch my video on Drum Pedal Spring Tension Explained for a full rundown, but the pedal helping your foot return to the top of the stroke is what gets you to higher speeds. Spring tension is what does the work.

    Will you eventually be able to play faster? I can only do the exercises at a slow tempo. Never used a lot of double bass drumming and would like to improve in that area.

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  8 років тому +13

      +Drummerke 1980 Yes, you must build up the muscles to play faster. If you can only do them slowly, that means you need to build up your shins. The best way to do that is by doing these exercises. The more you do them the easier they will become and the faster you can go. You'll never be as fast on the floor as you are on the pedals, but I would say you ought to be able to do about 70% of the speed.

    • @deadcan1980
      @deadcan1980 8 років тому +2

      Ryan Alexander Bloom
      Hey, I'm having the opposite issue here. I'm able to go faster on the floor than on the pedals. I don't like to blame the equipment, but the only reason I can think of is the lack of rebound from my electronic bass drum, or a weird spring tension. I can basically stomp the floor comfortably, but when I transition to the pedals, I end up spazzing out and losing it in a couple of bars. Advice?

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  7 років тому +4

      Neel Patil it could be the spring tension is messing with you. Try adjusting it and see what happens. Electronic kick pads are often strange feeling compared to real drums too. I could see both of those things being weird. On the other hand, while practicing on the floor is good for your bass drumming muscles, it isn't 100% the same as actually playing. At some point you will just have to spend time on the pedals and work out the subtle differences in technique. Most things related to pedal technique take a while of deliberate practice to master. That is the real secret. Keep working with very direct intent and you'll get it.

When I try it with one foot it's doable, but like with the two ? Not even close ! Unless I'm on a drum throne when I adjust the hight, so that I don't have to actively lift my feet. Does someone have a tip ?

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  4 роки тому +1

      It is normal for the third one to be very hard. Most of my students cannot do it at all, or at least had a LOT of trouble at first. You must sit with the correct posture and use your core muscles. If you don't have enough core strength or control, it is literally impossible. You might have to work up to it over time. Your drumming will improve when you are able, though.

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  4 роки тому

      Stephen Van Bellinghen I don’t know what that means. Maybe it’s too early in the morning... but I really don’t think I know what a turbo or accelerator pedal is. Those sound like automotive terms to me.

    • @stephenvanbellinghen4662
      @stephenvanbellinghen4662 4 роки тому

      @@RyanAlexanderBloom hmm I coulda sworn these were common terms. But I guess its just for DW pedals? Anyway the idea is just that the accelerator pedal has greater/faster movement with less foot motion.
      But when i looked it up some people said the 'turbo' DW pedal, which is basically just a standard pedal, had more control then the accelerator. So i went with the turbo when getting my first kit.. which was about 8 months ago.
      Anyway the practice video u made was good but i still wonder if the high double bass speeds were only possible with these kinds of pedals.
      The ones im using are DW5000 turbo pedals. (i also made a beginner mistake of getting a kit with two kick drums cuz i didn't know what i was doing lol)

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  4 роки тому

      Stephen Van Bellinghen hmm yeah no still never heard of that but I’ve never owned a Dw pedal. I’ve played on a few though. I don’t think that the pedal necessarily precludes you from playing fast. As long as you have as pro tier pedal, not beginner or student, then you Should be able to play pretty fast and accurate. There are some I don’t like but other people do. So it’s just preference sometimes. I also have a kit with 2 kicks. It’s a bit of a hassle to move and tune but it has its own benefits as well. That’s how double kick started. Double pedals that actually worked well arrived many decades later.

    • @stephenvanbellinghen4662
      @stephenvanbellinghen4662 4 роки тому

      @@RyanAlexanderBloom Cool i have heard pros and cons of double kick but its just alot for a beginner to swallow. Although after 8 months using them i'm at least starting to get somewhat comfortable. Have you ever seen the drum playthrough by infant annihilator? His technique is godly but obviously ur gonna also need the right pedals too to at least enable that speed. I think not having a kickport, and perhaps bad tuning also does hinder the effect of my bass drums.
      Obviously something as fast as infant annihilator is way way out of my ballpark but unfortunately thats the kind of bass drumming thats in my mind when i want to play, haha. (well usually not that fast, but just as an example.)

Real drumming is always, always preferable when you can do it. But, like you said, in an office or other drum-hostile place it’s beneficial.

      Ryan Alexander Bloom yes sir! And this video is a great tool for motivation! I practice slower with more muscle power due to the lack of pedals until I feel the burn, it really makes me Flow when I get on the kit, I prefer playing paradiddles this way it builds the dexterity and control which is what every drumming truly wants

    I really want to learn how to play but I get discouraged way too easily and I worry that I just won't be able to learn it.

      If you're not ready for many months up to several years of practicing then don't start playing the drums. Just to be honest, it's never a quick, easy skill to pick up. You won't, in all likelihood, sound good for a long time. I've seen dozens of students quit within weeks of starting as they realized that after a few lessons they still weren't any good and they suddenly saw the gap between their current skills and the sound they wanted. Good drummers just keep plugging away and about 15 years later they sound like professionals. Hobbyists buy a kit and always sound like beginners or sell the kit within a month. If you know you discourage easily, drums are honestly a terrible choice.

      i practise double pedals with my heels. as you said you can lift your feet as well but I do heels instead

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  7 років тому +1

      Tottiere one of these 3 exercises uses your heels to strike the ground. That is the only way that I suggest using them. If you're doing something else with your heels I assume that it isn't consistent with good pedal technique.
