I've been playing double pedal for four years now and the amount of patience you need with double pedal is incredible. Sometimes you won't see improvement for about a month so your motivational speech at the start really helps.
It's been more than five years and I still think this is the best instructional video on UA-cam for double bass. Motivating and informative like no other!
Best tutorial ever. The “wrong” examples and accompanying sign/ sound effects were great, but the cookie and milk, pure gold! Proper great work. It was enlightening AND entertaining. Kept my attention the entire time, and that’s what a greater teacher does: educates while keeping his/ her students engaged. Not realizing one is learning, because one is having fun. Just brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing your time and wisdom. 🍻
As an above the knee amputee drummer, I am STILL working on my speed even though I will not be able to do this at this level. I did enjoy this lesson and will apply these exercises accordingly. Thank you for making this. ONELEG OUT
Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. Great video dude. A great lesson aimed toward people who have never had private teachers to tell them these things.
one of the most comprehensive videos regarding posture, form, morivation and approach to reaching goals on the kick. Thank you for your contribution to the comunity, its invaluable
I bought an electric drum kit because I didn't want to bother my neighbors during the quarentine. I do not regret it. Everything you say is correct; all the reasons for not being able to play double bass properly were easily correctable. I've been able to practice for 4+ hours (I work on my hands too) because of having to stay inside. Thank you so much for your videos, especially during this time. Hope you and your family are safe. Take care!
What I appreciate about this video is how honest and real it is. We are all just wanting to be great drummers. So by listening /watching this video, I was taught to let my guard down. I do need to practice more. Because every single one of us knows that practicing absolutely WILL make us better. And he tells us that in a non threatening way. No drummer that we love, be it George Kollias, or jazz drummer Jeff Hamilton sat down on a drum seat, and played like that without deciding that this is what I want to take as far as I possibly can in life. If anybody reading this hasn't heard jazz drummer Jeff Hamilton. Do it. Nit one person that truly appreciates what and how important the drums are to music in general, will not be blown away by this unassuming 60 something year old play drums in a way that will have you showing all of your musician friends. It's amazing how different drums can be played. He truly proves that the drums are an instrument, not just a beat keeper. There is a 3 part interview with him that you'll find just by using the search engine on UA-cam. He says alot of things in other videos that Eugene speaks about in this one. Like the importance of balance, and staying loose. It's awesome to see 2 expert drummers that play a totally different style, say so many things that are basically identical in meaning and purpose. I needed you Eugene.! You have revived the emotions of drumming in me that I myself had forgotten existed. A heart felt Thank You Sir.!
excellent advice throughout this whole video. i played/practiced for 2 years before i was able to hold 16th notes at 120bpm for more than 5 minutes. so for those that think its easy...its not. but its worth it if you stick with it. and hes 100% right. doing it correctly at slower tempos is much more productive than doing it wrong at faster tempos..you wont learn anything like that.
I'vr been playing for a bit less than a year and made it up to like 110 bpm for endurance, but I can get up to 135 sometimes. What do you think is more important though? Practicing double bass techniques, or practicing rudiments. I want to play prog rock/metal, what would be best to practice to play this genre?
i play my drums for 8+ years now. i never ever lost a thought about sitting right. you changed my life. now i can hammer my double bass not faster, but for way longer time with way more precision. i know, maybe i sound like a positive thinking bot, but trust me, i am not. thx for this vid. you changed my life.
Thank you Eugene I could not play fast double bass before I watched this video three years ago. Slow and steady wins the race. I played 8th notes (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + instead of 1e+a2e+a3e+a etc) 165 bpm for 10 minutes 3 days a week because that felt comfortable. (if you must play that slow 2-3x a week for 10-15 minutes, do so because it counts) and one day after two months of this regiment I warmed up and performed my regiment as usual and I was able to use my ankles for the first time in my life! I then dialed the tempo down to a comfortable 150 bpm 16th notes and played it for 30 minutes. Now I can play 210 bpm on the flip of a dime! Thank you again on behalf of myself and my band mates. Let your body breathe, stay in time with a metronome, adjust your tempo according to your present comfort and abilities, and these methods will help you with overall timekeeping and fast double bass.
Teachers, professors, people who offer education of any kind whatsoever, take heed...for this man is the true master of the art of teaching and motivating! Really man, thank you very much for this video, your advice has already caused a great difference in my playing (for the better, of course). And you know, i'm certainly still counting, so to speak :)
I'm a self taught drummer struggling to learn fast double bass. I can barely handle even 150 bpm, but this video gave me the stamina boost I need. Thanks for your wisdom and teachings!!
This is so cool.. I started to learn heel-toe single technique three months ago (wanja gröger a.k.a. morganvanhelsing on UA-cam "taught" me :D). A month ago I couldn't do 170 bpm for 10 minutes, now I can do 190 for 10 minutes and 180 for 30 minutes. Now when I practise I start daily with 150 bpm 10 minutes, 160 bpm 10 minutes, 170 bpm 20 minutes and then 180 30 minutes. After that today I did 3x1 minute 190 bpm (rested for a while in-between) and then could do 10 min 190 bpm for the first time. What did I learn? It Doesn't Matter if you don't see "visible" progress every day - what you Can see is that you'll be able to play cleaner and "easier" and with less tenseness and louder with the familiar tempos. At first, though, I just spent hours and hours watching my feet (either right of left, playing with one foot at a time) and tried to make it look and feel and sound sensible when first learning the heel-toe single technique. Eugene Ryabchenko Oh and btw it's hilarious how much that comment sounds like it's from an AA-meeting :D "Thanks for sharing, Antton. I am glad you are with us today. Let Jesus guide you on your way to your new life!"
I consider that video not only enjoyable to watch, but also the best video about Double Bass on yt. I'm playing now almost 3 years, first two on roland drums, never really practiced speed of double bass as a pure "separate" exercise, it was coming along with practise for songs that I wanted to play ( spend a hell of a time learning painkiller intro for example). I changed electronic set for acustic drums at the end of august this year. On acustic drum you've got to punch harder than on the trigered pad, therefore I didn't had the stamina for fast playing. I starded from 150 bpm (16th notes). At that speed I was able to maintain stable 30 min double bass without interruption. I played at that speed for 2 weeks everyday, 30 min long (preceded by 15 min warmup with various double bass beats) and jumped for 160 bpm. And then there is the list: 160 bpm - one week 165 bpm - one week 170 bpm - two weeks 175 bpm - one week 180 bpm - I'm starting second week now I'm playing for 30 minutes everyday, and I don't jump 5 bpm faster until I don't feel quite relaxed at certain speed. I'm going for 210 bpm for now, thanks Eugene you've showed the right way, just sit and play :D Ohh and I've got crappy pedal worth about 80 $ newdeal.home.pl/matrix/stopa518/1.jpg Greetings from Poland, hope you like I shared my thought
Who could not like this video? This video was a discovery for me. I had no motivation and I didn't know how to play double pedal properly. Eugene made me change my mind about those issues. The Swivel technique is my approach because of this tutorial and I love it! Thanks a lot, Eugene!!!
Dude Eugene, This video has helped me tremendously just over the past 3 days. I've been spending about 3-4 hours a day switching between constant 16th double bass, to working single foot / double foot ankle motions, etc. My progress has been amazing, I can't wait to see where I'll be in 3 months. I hope your life is filled with nothing but gorgeous women and glorious endeavors. Much love from Texas.
This video and your many others has really revived my love for drumming and making metal. I recently bought some dw5002 s and I am going to watch this video a lot to remind myself how to practice correctly. Thank you for this awesome tutorial.
thank you for your feedback . i play double bass more then i used to before cose the band im in now soo i wasthinking to get on it more seriously haha thank you i will check for a pad
140 - 150 bpm is where a lot people cap at because your technique needs to change around then. Your hip flexors need to act as suspenders for your legs rather than being a source of power. Then all your power and control should come from foot, ankle, and calf. Basically, at faster speeds (140+), your quads and knees need should be fixed at one position rather than moving up and down. 5:37 is a perfect example.
@@YaDingus I see this a lot on the internet that if someone can't play fast it's because they are using full leg motion -- that's definitely not the only reason (I'm sure everyone who is trying to figure out how to play faster is more than aware of leg vs ankle). For me - I using ankle technique 100% (i use leg only for extremely slow stuff like 100bpm, anything moderate or faster -- only ankle) and my max is still at around 160-170 bpm (i can do bursts at 200 though). I don't think it's leg vs ankle - a lot of people play with full leg at over 200 bpm (for example watch a studio video of Jay Weinberg playing Unsainted with double bass over the verses ua-cam.com/video/27iYNJ_huP0/v-deo.html, that's 205 bpm or smth -- full leg motion). I personally sort of solved this for myself by figuring out how to play doubles (heel-toe), so here's an example of me playing a 190bpm song with double strokes - ua-cam.com/video/sd_rgubqV0g/v-deo.html
@@antondubkov You're right, there are multiple ways to achieve higher bpm double bass. Once I reach about 140 bpm I began to switch to more ankle movement but I'm still using some higher leg motion for balance and control. It's the same technique Marthyn Jovanovic. The, of course, around 190 I'm all ankle. I notice you keep your pedals pretty close to the thrown which is what I use to do, but now I keep them quite further away which is WAY more comfortable for higher BPMs. Awesome performance, by the way! Does a different drive shaft make a difference? I was thinking about converting my Speed Cobras to direct drive.
I am playing drums for 25 years now. And you did the best motivational, technical and cool tutorial so far. Even though there are more techniques , you just burned the house with this one simple and solid one. Congratulations
A+ presentation. I'm going to put your advice to good use! I've been using a "hybrid" technique of heel toe on my left foot while playing on the ball of my right foot toward the bottom of the footboard. It has given me a noticeable boost in speed when I need it but I feel like I'm cheating. I've heard of the swivel method but this has given me motivation to put it into practice.
I watch this about once a week to remind myself. i more or less know the whole vid word for word and my wife complains i pick up your accent for a few minutes after i watch it ^ ^
HOW edit; so 50 minutes later i figured it out. I always tried to force it, wasn't sitting right/relaxed, now it clicked and I'm just banging away while typing this, with ease. At ease. finally figured it out. I love UA-cam
Incredible, thank you for talking about sitting positions and spring tensions, especially "don't lean against the pedal". I think I wasted years of practicing double bass the wrong way and beeing angry about not getting any better. It's such a mess.
I'm back my friend, and I've been working on your technique for a while now. The key is tightening the springs all the way up and adjusting the beaters all the way back 90 degrees. You'll get the quick response or bounce-back that takes time getting used too. This is what increases your speed but in doing so, you need to following your technique in controlling the pedal, which is playing with your ankles and bouncing the pedal, as you say like a basketball, and staying completely relaxed. This is what's hard and takes time to practice if you're just starting out. But for us drummers who've been playing for a long time , this is the next step up. In the last six months I've gone from 140BPM to 180BPM no problem practicing at least 30 minutes a day up to a couple of hours. Truly amazing, thank you sir!
Damn, this is pretty amazing! the first double bass tutorial that actually covered most things. But most importantly, focused on the training part! that bpm * 30mins! that is so true. you need to get your muscles and legs used to playing! in the past i've just tried to play really fast and only managed for short periods. I'll get right on this! thanks for the awesome tips!
Hey Eugene, really good drum covers and videos! Do you think you could upload a video about the one handed drum roll technique? It would really be helpful. Thanks.
Best one I've seen! Forget double bass with doubles! I was struggling with just the double stroke. First thing I did was go down, crank the tension, and bring the beaters back. I already feel a difference. More control, and better rebound. I'm a guitarist that converted, and I've struggled with some concepts behind the kit. Thank you!
why isn't this a mandatory video for every one who searches for drum tips???? Thank you for the video! The only thing against it is, that I have found it just yet!
Hey Eugene, Great video, thanks for those advices. I was wondering, I'm not yet at the speed of 170. I'm for now confortable at 140, and sometimes I can reach 160. I was wondering what technique should I use at those speed. I mean, when are you switching to the swivel technique ? I play mostly heel up or flat foot. Do you think It's good to practice heel up until 170 and then switch to Swivel ? I hope I have been clear enough haha. Last question, you talked about endurance, but what about control ? I mean, I'm able to go at 160, for like 1 or 2 minutes, but it's impossible for me to play a song At 160 bpm with stuff like syncopation on the feet or you know, particular kinda jent beats. any hint ?
Make sure you watch this one if you need control ua-cam.com/video/X_jbNtUe6eM/v-deo.html You can do full leg until 180 with ease. + you can do endurance at slower tempos, not a problem.
Already did ;). thanks ! I have already improved my control thanks to your advices ! will you make a video on tips/exercices for finger/hand technique (I have seen the advanced hand techniques, but I dont really know how to practice speed & control with fingers...). Will you go to the NAMM show this year ?
This is honestly the best video I've seen in terms of visual and audio tips. Thank you for including beater angle/distance, spring tension, foot board height, as well as overall posture. Lately I've been messing around a lot with posture and adjustments to comfortably play and practice with more of the ankle technique - I'm used to flat-footed and using my whole legs/hip flexor muscles and just barely reach 200 BPM.
WHISH I woulda found this a few yrs ago!!!after not playin for 25yrs & beenin a SPEED FREAK & 50 with bad knees thisis PERFECT technique for me !!with easy to follow explanations of how & y it works!!P.S. tama speed cobras work great for us OLD guys loooonger foot boards
Dude, this is by far the best video I've seen on real uses. Where to sit on the throne is a huge thing that a lot of people dont cover! I also REALLY appreciate how you say that one will need a good attitude and how it will take time and all that. Such a great attitude like many have already said. Got my subscription is well!
I am playing Axis for the last (almost) 3 years and I recently (a week ago) had a chance to try out the demons again and damn they still feel amazing. I am glad you think it's worth it! I agree.
долго не мог понять как научится играть дбл басс , кучу уроков пересмотрел, но толку небыло.. с этого видео реально понел как это делается! через практику, терпение и труд! гениально! Лайк
I'm new to drumming, just got a roland td 11k a few days ago and wanted to see how smooth the pedals were after reading this comment, and i realized that i actually bought these pedals lol
Eugene Ryabchenko Yeah, i'm still learning how to use them well, i've tried adjusting springs but the left one is always a bit harder to use than the right pedal. Also i can only do a 180 bpm pattern for a short time and thats with my feet flat, cant do it with my heels up for some reason :/ Need more muscle im weak and out of shape atm
its like you are an angel that climbed inside my head and told me everything i needed to hear about getting faster... including telling me to stop being lazy haha
5:19 --> thank you very much, i had pain in my knees from putting my weight towards the pedals. I switched my position and now they are pretty much gone. (they reoccur when i fall back in my old way of playing) at first it really was weird, but i could really accustom quick, because i guess the body does what the body needs, when it gets the healthier alternative.
I've been playing drums for a very long time and I just started playing metal earlier this year. This video, and your other tutorials, have been a huge help! Six months ago I could barely hold a bass drive at all. Now, I'm totally comfortable with everything that I'm playing. Thank you so much for all your extremely valuable videos!
I'm a very experienced guitar player broadening my horizons into the drum world... and this is probably the most helpful video I have seen yet.... Proud of Your Boy!

@@fizzyfran2886 i've been waiting a long time for this moment to come
Wow man this video is excellent. Most people explained one thing or the other. You explained posture, how to sit, pedal adjustment. Thank you
You're always welcome ;)
That sense of humor in the video is Brilliant!!! Much love!
He doesn’t make the video about himself he is genuinely helping drummers get better, thanks bro !
Eugene Ryabchenko
you are talented,, Funny, and Entertaining
Awesome clip.
Eugene Ryabchenko great video mate what practice pad ( kick ) would you suggest to buy ??
thank you for your feedback . i play double bass more then i used to before cose the band im in now soo i wasthinking to get on it more seriously haha thank you i will check for a pad
It is so sad, "practice in slow tempos 180". My max is 145-150 :D
DueyTait-Pastor very well put!
I have been practicing on my new Yamaha DFP9D pedals at 140 bpm for 5 mins.
Hip flexors are burning.
🤣
Now to the next level - ankle and swivel!
This dude is so positive its awesome.
I am playing drums for 25 years now. And you did the best motivational, technical and cool tutorial so far.
Even though there are more techniques , you just burned the house with this one simple and solid one.
Congratulations
Literally one of the most comprehensive, valuable bassdrum tutorial/instructionals on UA-cam.
I watch this about once a week to remind myself. i more or less know the whole vid word for word and my wife complains i pick up your accent for a few minutes after i watch it ^ ^
Hahahahahaha, that is really nice. Thank you for this comment ;)
Best drumming vid I’ve seen ever!
I'm a self learner... And I just started practicing drums... About 5 days ago.. With a Speed Cobra 310lw...and now I know what to do... Thanx to you
Man, that's the way a true technique teacher talks. Thank you very much!
HOW
edit; so 50 minutes later i figured it out. I always tried to force it, wasn't sitting right/relaxed, now it clicked and I'm just banging away while typing this, with ease. At ease. finally figured it out. I love UA-cam
I've been waiting so long for a video like this, thank you sir!
Thank you so much man
You're welcome, Joey.
are u the real Joey jordison
No shit! That's a hell of an endorsement!
Incredible, thank you for talking about sitting positions and spring tensions, especially "don't lean against the pedal". I think I wasted years of practicing double bass the wrong way and beeing angry about not getting any better. It's such a mess.
No worries, no practice was done in vain.
Wow, thank you so much for this detailed reply! Keep up the good work! Cheers and good luck.
The Perfect teacher 🤘🏻👌🏻
Damn, this is pretty amazing! the first double bass tutorial that actually covered most things. But most importantly, focused on the training part! that bpm * 30mins! that is so true. you need to get your muscles and legs used to playing! in the past i've just tried to play really fast and only managed for short periods. I'll get right on this! thanks for the awesome tips!
You're welcome ;)
Hey Eugene, really good drum covers and videos! Do you think you could upload a video about the one handed drum roll technique? It would really be helpful. Thanks.
If you mean the gravity blast then I already did a video where I talk about it
ua-cam.com/video/r-4xnnG4xzA/v-deo.htmlm47s
Not sure if this is a motivational vid or a drum vid ...🤔
It's both.
Sailor1010 I shared it with my guitarists and bass players so both haha
Sailor1010
Both
Does it matter!
I mean, I'm able to go at 160, for like 1 or 2 minutes, but it's impossible for me to play a song At 160 bpm with stuff like syncopation on the feet or you know, particular kinda jent beats. any hint ?
Make sure you watch this one if you need control
ua-cam.com/video/X_jbNtUe6eM/v-deo.html
You can do full leg until 180 with ease.
Is it normal that im playing 170 bpm with one pedal?
@@ogKalmari either you are actually doing 85 bpm or it isn't sustained. Otherwise video proof is needed there since that is literally insane
There was some great advice in this! You deserve more views
Very informative and helpful! Going to live somewhere where i can set up a drumkit in my home soon, it's going to be soo much fun learning again!
One of the most honest and useful approaches I've ever seen
This is honestly the best video I've seen in terms of visual and audio tips. Thank you for including beater angle/distance, spring tension, foot board height, as well as overall posture. Lately I've been messing around a lot with posture and adjustments to comfortably play and practice with more of the ankle technique - I'm used to flat-footed and using my whole legs/hip flexor muscles and just barely reach 200 BPM.
this was both interesting, and very motivational! great video!
Great video. Thanks for sharing this with the world!
Perfectly put, sir!
ur sentences inspired me,thanks alot
Excellent video man. Inspired me a lot :)
This video is amazing I love it help so much awesome attitude, and really motivates.🤘🤘 Thank you for these tips.
You are always welcome.
I have the Demon Drive It's f****** amazing I was excited when I seen him with it in the video totally worth the purchase
I am playing Axis for the last (almost) 3 years and I recently (a week ago) had a chance to try out the demons again and damn they still feel amazing. I am glad you think it's worth it! I agree.
@@EugeneRyabchenkoDrummer do you think Axis is better than DD? And why?
More than great. There are no shortcut's. Thank you!!
долго не мог понять как научится играть дбл басс , кучу уроков пересмотрел, но толку небыло.. с этого видео реально понел как это делается! через практику, терпение и труд! гениально! Лайк
My god those Demon drive pedals look like the are smooth as hell :O
I'm new to drumming, just got a roland td 11k a few days ago and wanted to see how smooth the pedals were after reading this comment, and i realized that i actually bought these pedals lol
Eugene Ryabchenko Yeah, i'm still learning how to use them well, i've tried adjusting springs but the left one is always a bit harder to use than the right pedal. Also i can only do a 180 bpm pattern for a short time and thats with my feet flat, cant do it with my heels up for some reason :/ Need more muscle im weak and out of shape atm
***** If only i could with an electronic :P
Demirel Turkmanovici I have a set of dual pedals that are smooth but not so fucking smooth as this 1
You explain shit very well my brotha. Thank you 🤘
no me canso de ver esto
Great info abt how to play those techniques and also the pedal settings, n great play by Eugene
ahh yes, the pedal settings advice, glad i stumbled upon this video, it's the missing ingredient in my learning.
thanks man thanks a lot andreas from ATHENS GREECE... JUST RESPECT NOTHING MORE!!!!
its like you are an angel that climbed inside my head and told me everything i needed to hear about getting faster... including telling me to stop being lazy haha
Played horror games while exercising, every time I felt nervous tempo sped up
The more I watch this video, the more I like it! Always some new detail. And it's still funny! Thanks!
5:19 --> thank you very much, i had pain in my knees from putting my weight towards the pedals. I switched my position and now they are pretty much gone. (they reoccur when i fall back in my old way of playing) at first it really was weird, but i could really accustom quick, because i guess the body does what the body needs, when it gets the healthier alternative.
excelent!!!!
8:33 ROTFL .. great humour! 😂😂😂😂
lmao the blink-182 I Miss You beat in the background
I've been playing drums for a very long time and I just started playing metal earlier this year. This video, and your other tutorials, have been a huge help! Six months ago I could barely hold a bass drive at all. Now, I'm totally comfortable with everything that I'm playing. Thank you so much for all your extremely valuable videos!
I'm a very experienced guitar player broadening my horizons into the drum world... and this is probably the most helpful video I have seen yet.... Proud of Your Boy!
what are those

This guy looks like he’s going to teach paradiddles but then proceeds to annihilate the double pedals
chto za huisos? :)
This is one of the best drum tutorials I’ve watched on UA-cam and I don’t even have a double pedal.
You’ve got yourself a subscriber.
You are great motivator, it takes patience, get into just the present, enjoy the exercise...and you will improve. Great lessons in life.
