Tarantino put in the animated section, and the black and white and silhouette parts, so that he could show the blood and gore that he wanted to while still keeping his R-rating...he did not want an NC-17 rating. The ratings people count animated and black and white goriness as less than gore in realistic and vibrant color. LOL Also, scalping is removing the scalp from the skull...what happened to O-Ren is that she had the top of her head cut off. EEP!
This is homage to Shaw Brothers movies 1951-1985, at best they made over 40 movies in a year, if people have seen some silly old Hong Kong fight movie with sillier sound effects, its most likely Shaw Brothers production. Cop Car in beginning with all the sun glasses on dash, is a reference to Gone in 60 seconds , 1974 movie, H.B. Halicki movie , writer , director , main role and stunt driver, he sadly died in stunt car crash 1989.
To be fair, one of the orderlies has a truck with a giant "Pussy Wagon" painted on it. I imagine the hospital staff has learned to mind their own business.
Fun fact: The black and white fight sequence was not Tarantino’s call. The MPAA would not allow the movie to be released with an R rating if the sequence was kept as is due to too much blood. So he re-edited the sequence in black and white to pass the censors and get the approval for release. The Japanese version of the film has the original colorized fight sequence.
Also, in that Japanese version, there's an additional moment with the kid that she spanks at the end of the fight. And she doesn't blink when she enters the blue room at the end of the fight, too.
Tarantino has a special version that he would show privately called Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair where it's in color of course. I have a copy of it.
The japanese version has a lot more scenes that were cut from the international version. The anime sequence is also longer, and the end is a bit different.

The O-ren character is based on a stock character played by an actress named Reiko Ike in the 70s. She ruled a sub-genre of yakuza/swordplay movies known as "pinky violence"; the character is an homage of sorts to her. A lot of the "whoosh" sound effects are sampled from old martial arts films. It's a classic. W/r/t Tarantino's foot fetish, check out Inglorious Basterds; a major plot point basically revolves around a guy obsessively noting details about a woman's foot/high heeled shoe.
The fight choreography at the end between [bleep] and O-Ren is still to this day my favorite of all movies. So good. And to hear the water in the background brings goosebumps down my spine to me even now so many years later.
Fun fact: the reason Beatrix wears yellow, aside from being blonde, is that the color yellow represents death in many east Asian cultures. Everything about her represents death, her fighting skills, her attire, and even her code name Black Mamba, which is defined in the next movie as “death incarnate.”
Should definitely watch part 2 right after as they were meant to be just one whole movie but to do it justice needed two parts. Love it so much, the film is one of my all time favorites (film as in pt 1 & 2) and I’ll never get tired of watching it. Definitely a movie everyone needs to see at least once!
The blonde lady is Daryl Hannah, who starred in films like Splash with Tom Hanks, Roxanne with Steve Martin and the original Blade Runner with Harrison Ford.
Hantorri Hanzo is Sonny Chiba, a famous Japanese movie star from the 60's and 70's who did many many Samurai movies. Which was always good with spurting, and spraying blood😂😂.
The Sheriff , played by Michael Parks, who found the bride and slaughtered people at the wedding rehearsal is a character who first showed up in the Tarantino written and Robert Rodriguez directed film "From Dusk Til Dawn". He also shows up in Death Proof and Planet Terror. His son, "son number one", as portrayed in this film is the actual son of the actor Michael Parks.

My absolute favorite QT film, which is partially because it's such a loving homage to older Kung Fu films. However, Uma and Quentin really had a falling out after making this film, primarily because she was badly injured in a car crash from a scene in KB2 (the crash isn't in the film) when Q made her drive the car which wasn't safe, and it was shot from the back of her so they could have used a stunt double, and she lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. I believe there was also an issue with the scene where Go Go's chain was wrapped around her neck and was choking [bleep] and it was Q who was actually pulling on the chain in that scene and he may have been a little too rough with it. They didn't speak for a long time after the film came out, if I remember correctly.
Great reaction... I also adore these movies in not just their execution but also because despite all the different styles being meshed, it works like a fine dish from a restaurant.
This is basically "The Bride wore Black" vs "Lady Snowblood". I still remember this one film professor, going through the movie and pointing out every time Quentin *homaged* a scene from another movie. He called it "pinch of this, dash of that- filmmaking". Fun fact: They had to work *hard* to make Daryl Hannah look unattractive. When she showed up on set, she looked like she came right off of the "Grumpy old men" movies. She had to be the anti-Uma. ie: Grim, gritty and dark.
Yes. I often wondered if anyone else knew this. Lady Snowblood especially (even down to the "chapter" title cards). I actually don't mind this as Tarantino still makes it his own, mainly down to his dialogue 🙂
omg lol I lost it in tears when you said "ewww why does it have poo stains all over it"... I've seen more than 10 of these reactions and that's a first one.
One of the main inspirations for this movie was the exploitation Chanbara film, Lady Snowblood. Fantastic movie with a lot of style. The Zatoichi series is another great one to check out, as is any movie by Akira Kurosawa. For me, specifically, his adaptation of Macbeth, The Throne of Blood is amazing.
The black & white sequence is that way to avoid an NC-17 rating. There are versions out there where you can see it in full color, but they aren't super easy to find.
I watched the second movie first and the first movie second, by accident, and it was kind of a neat experience. It turned the whole thing into a Pulp Fiction-esque mystery. Where you see how it ends and then get to watch the tragedy unfold.
Speaking of Quentin Tarantino, I would love to hear your thoughts on ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. A rare instance of a movie that has aged better for me (felt it was okay the first time but has since grown on me). A damn great follow-up for Leo DiCaprio (this was his first film since his Oscar win for THE REVENANT).
Great choice of yellow outfit ! ^^ This is a film that I love and appreciate more and more each time I see it. Uma and Quentin were working on Pulp Fiction where they came up with the idea for "The Bride". The pair fell out as Quentin insisted on Uma doing a car scene in KB II where she was hesitant, and she crashed causing serious injury. Uma stated that she would never do another action film after the Crazy 88 fight which left her physically and emotionally drained for months on end. Her Aussie stunt double Zoe Bell is in Death Proof and Hateful Eight.
It’s called atrophy, when a limb hasn’t been used in so long, the muscle withers away and can no longer use it to its full capability. It’s happened to me multiple times due to my illness, it’s not fun but it’s also not too hard to get over provided you keep at it and do physical therapy.
I love this movie, the action scenes were like straight out of an old Chinese martial arts movie but with more blood and gore. plus the character intros along with their names were the best.
Mary !! The stunt girl in " death proof..." is actually the Uma Thurman stunt in this movie. There's a lot of renditions in KB : Beatrix's yellow and black sports outfit copies Bruce Lee's in "Game of Death". There are also nods to Chinese Kung Fu cinema from the 70's.
I've never seen anyone comment on this here or other videos and maybe everyone else has figured it out, but in the animated ORen sequence, the Yakuza body guard who kills ORens father and hands Boss Matsumoto his samurai sword and then kicks the whiskey bottle - shooting it and setting the house on fire, is BILL. He had a hand in ORen's parents deaths despite her never being aware of it.
Fun fact, QT was at the airport on the way out of Japan when he caught the sounds of the 5,6,7,8s playing in a music shop, and had to rush in to find the music of the group to get them on stage at the house of blue leaves, This film got their song Woo Hoo in the charts on a global scale. Different scenes are filmed differently as QT is an inovator and wanted to make a film with a;; styles, so expect more in the second film.
Things you will get in a Quentin Tarantino movie… 1. Incredible dialogue. He writes scripts to within an inch of its life and works with actors he likes to bring characters he loves to the screen. 2. Violence. Without fail, he likes stories about violent people who do violent things. The black and white shots was not his choice, that was a concession to avoid an NC-17 rating from the MPAA. 3. Great music. As you heard and said, kick ass soundtracks and amazing needle drops. 4. Time out of order. This one isn’t as disordered as some others, but it’s a trademark of his style. 5. Feet. Yep, it’s his thing. To each their own. If you haven’t seen other movies of his, Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, and Inglourious Basterds are my personal faves. Hope you delve a bit deeper into the catalogue and enjoy the ride.
I once knew of a old man from Okinawa, he train a teen boy for a Martial Arts tournament. Apparently the boy had some bullying issues with a group of kids. I wonder what happened to them?
Since you did see "Death Proof" you should know that the tall, blonde Zoe Bell (from New Zealand), who had a speaking (and daredevil) role in that film, was the actual stuntwoman for Uma Thurman in the "Kill Bill" films. Both are long and lean, with Uma standing 5'11" and Zoe, 5'8".
My favorite Tarantino movie. Great reaction. Be patient, every question you may have is answered in Vol. 2. The actor playing Hatori Hanzo is Sonny Chiba, a very famous actor in Japan. QT was, of course, a big fan, so he had to have him in the movie. Also, Gordon Liu, who is the head of the Crazy 88 has a role in Vol 2 as a different character. Enjoy!
I loved both these movies when they came out. This one blew me away making seeing the second one imperative. Now, as for the "foot" thing: I NEVER heard about/realized this was a thing until you mentioned it and now, I can't bloody unsee it! I mean, in this movie it seemed like it was just part of the action/story! Uma can't move her legs, so she concentrated on moving a toe...so it was "natural" to show it. Sophie is driving and accelerates so they show her foot on the pedal...totally related to what's going on. Where the "what the hell" finally sank in was the shot where the women in the rock band were all barefoot and :::light bulb goes on::: I think when I first saw the movie, since they only "highlighted" their bare feet for a few seconds, I just took it in stride. Maybe it was part of Japanese culture? I've seen women take their high-heeled shoes off to dance at weddings. I mean, what do I know? ...but no, instead, I find out for the first time that it's because Quentin's got to flaunt his foot fetish to the whole dang world. ...wow.
The young assassin, Gogo, was in a Japanese film called Battle Royale. That role is why Tarantino cast her in this movie and its 100% worth checking out also! Amazing film!
Kill Bill v1 is Tarantino's tribute to old Samurai movies and Kung Fu movies. The over the top fight choreography, the b&w, the spraying blood... all old samurai movie tropes. The bald bad guy, is Gordon Liu, one of the most famous Kung fu movie actors.... The inside joke that almost no one catches.... the opening sequence is the "Shaw Brothers" opening screen, one of the biggest Kung Fu movie studios. I laughed out loud in the theater, and only I got the joke out of the whole SRO theater.... hahaha.
If you enjoyed Gogo, the schoolgirl assassin (Kuriyama Chiaki), I would suggest checking out the Japanese 2000 film 'Battle Royale'. It is one of Tarantino's favorite films of all time and popularized the battle royale genre as we know it today, with movies and games such as The Hunger Games and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.
If you like revenge based movies, you would love "Lady Vengeance", it's the third installment of the well known korean "Vengeance Trilogy", of which "Old Boy" is part two.
It may a bit over gratuitous in violence but the moment towards the end when everything suddenly shifts to black and white was such a cool shot, also with the face off between O-Ren and the Bride🤘🏽 cool cinematography at work
Tarantino actually gave us the less gorey cut of the movie, Japan got the unedited release which included showing the bride cutting off the assistants limbs
Chiaki Kuriyama who portrayed Gogo Yubari, has been in horror and crime films & tv series such as Gonin (1995), Shikoku (1999), Battle Royale (2000), Ju-On: The Curse (2000), MPD Psycho (2000), and Ekusute (2007).
Uma Thurman's character, her name is revealed in the first film. but MOST people miss it. it took slow motion for me to catch that it was on her plane ticket to Japan for me to see it when Kill Bill first came out on DVD.
Wow I didnt remember how great this movie was. Tarantino made these movies to honor his favourite movies, Japanese samurai movies etc. Now I have to watch the second right away. Hope you enjoy it too. It's epic. Cherrylove from Finland❤
Thanks for another great reaction. There's a lot to enjoy about this film as you've seen. I can't believe this movie is 20 yrs old now, I remember watching it in the theater. Looking forward to your reaction of Vol.2!
That sequence with the people silhouetted against the blue background, is the second-most beautiful and memorable in all of Tarantino's work, in my opinion.
I think I remember seeing some extra about this movie that said part of the reason some scenes were in black and white is because they used so much fake blood during the course of the movie that if they did it in black and white the blood didn't have to be red so they could make the scenes as gory as they wanted but use cheaper stand in fluids that looked similar on film.
Quintin said that he purposefully used blood in three distinct cinematic ways (one for each part of the film). The second film brings out different shooting and storytelling styles and in my opinion does an even better job with its storytelling. Thank you for covering these movies, they are iconic.
Vernita was the second name on her "death list", hence the chapter was designated, "2".(O-Ren Ishii was "1"; her story occurred first chronologically, but later in this film).
That makes no sense. She's driving around in a car attached to a double murder after she left the country, trained for a month and murdered another 50 people and came back?
A lot of this movie is taken from the 1970's Japanese movie Lady Snowblood about a woman getting revenge. In fact, the O Ren battle is a shot for shot recreation.

Great reaction. I met Uma Thurman at the Kill Bill premier, and she was incredibly cool and down to Earth. Very laid back, friendly, and authentic.
Great reaction... I also adore these movies in not just their execution but also because despite all the different styles being meshed, it works like a fine dish from a restaurant.
They took a lot of inspiration for Lucy's character from "lady snowblood", Another awesome film.
Lady Snowblood...from the creator of Lone Wolf and Cub.
omg lol I lost it in tears when you said "ewww why does it have poo stains all over it"... I've seen more than 10 of these reactions and that's a first one.
"How did her parents let her be an assassin?" Bold of you to assume she didn't murder her own parents.
The MAN FROM OKINAWA is Sonny Chiba who passed away few years ago. he was a martial arts actor in Street Fighter
You know, I've probably seen this movie like twenty times and I never noticed all the foot shots till you pointed them out. Haha
:::::Ogami Itto and Daigoro roll by with dirty looks as to not being mentioned::::
HOORAH! Finally! Waited a long time for your reaction to this Mary! Definitely one of Tarantino's best! The choreography on the fight scenes were 🔥🔥🔥
Yuen woo ping helped.
The black & white sequence is that way to avoid an NC-17 rating. There are versions out there where you can see it in full color, but they aren't super easy to find.
Can’t wait for part 2, very different to 1 but part 2 is my favourite, So many iconic moments.
A damn great follow-up for Leo DiCaprio (this was his first film since his Oscar win for THE REVENANT).
same for me, it gets better and better every time I watch it!
I love that movie. Top Tier storytelling to me. Very underrated bromance movie.
Great choice of yellow outfit ! ^^
This is a film that I love and appreciate more and more each time I see it.
Zoe Bell is also briefly in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
zoe’s from new zealand
Loved your reaction. I've watched this movie many times and never noticed all the foot shots 🤣.
The Woo Hoo song is a cover from a 50s dance song, and then this version was later covered for Rayman Legends
He literally bought the STORE'S copy.
@@JnEricsonx They are all the store's copy.
@@redrick8900 as in the stores in play copy.
@@JnEricsonx Yeah. I worked in a record store. There is no distinction. If it wasn't for sale they wouldn't be playing it.
Things you will get in a Quentin Tarantino movie…
Hope you delve a bit deeper into the catalogue and enjoy the ride.
writing this as you're starting the movie...you're gonna be BLOWN AWAY....please VOL2 ASAP!
The Stunt Devil that did all these stunts for Urma Thurman is also the same Stunt person for Lucy Lawless in Xenia Warrior Princess TV Series.
The perfect movie to watch when you’re in Japan. Hope you’re having great time out there Mary
Ikr!!
@@MaryCherryOfficial29:02 the tolime from when she said "you may not last 5 minutes" to the bride striking the fatal blow was 4 minutes 59 seconds.
One thing you’ll notice about this film is Quentin uses Japanese cinematic styles. He does something similar with part 2 but in Chinese styles
I once knew of a old man from Okinawa, he train a teen boy for a Martial Arts tournament. Apparently the boy had some bullying issues with a group of kids. I wonder what happened to them?
Kill Bill is easily my 2nd favorite movie ever (volume 1 and 2 are one movie split up for commercial purposes), so glad you’re coming around to it.
Zoe was the real 'yellow-haired' warrior...
Enjoy!
The best part is "The Lonely Sheperd". The pan flute is an amazing instrument and it doesn't get any better than that.
Where the "what the hell" finally sank in was the shot where the women in the rock band were all barefoot and :::light bulb goes on:::
I think when I first saw the movie, since they only "highlighted" their bare feet for a few seconds, I just took it in stride.
The song whistled in the hospital, which you referred to, is called Twisted Nerve. It was written for a 1968 film of the same name.
Twisted Nerve ( the whistle song) was also used in Death Proof as Abernathy's ringtone
The reason it is in black and white is because the movie would have been rated NC-17 had that scene been in color.
Yaknow, the tune whistled is kinda legendary
Chiaki Kuriyama who portrayed Gogo Yubari, has been in horror and crime films & tv series such as Gonin (1995), Shikoku (1999), Battle Royale (2000), Ju-On: The Curse (2000), MPD Psycho (2000), and Ekusute (2007).
Uma Thurman's character, her name is revealed in the first film. but MOST people miss it. it took slow motion for me to catch that it was on her plane ticket to Japan for me to see it when Kill Bill first came out on DVD.
Did you notice the message on the soles of The Bride's shoes during the showdown at Blue Leaves? LOL!!!
Wow I didnt remember how great this movie was. Tarantino made these movies to honor his favourite movies, Japanese samurai movies etc. Now I have to watch the second right away. Hope you enjoy it too. It's epic. Cherrylove from Finland❤
The yellow track suit Uma wears is a tribute to Bruce Lee . It was the outfit he wore in his final movie Game of Death.
glad you gave it a 10, honestly this is my fav movie of all times, thanks 4 your work also
Thanks for another great reaction. There's a lot to enjoy about this film as you've seen. I can't believe this movie is 20 yrs old now, I remember watching it in the theater. Looking forward to your reaction of Vol.2!
The actress who played Gogo was also in Battle Royale, which is kinda like a Japanese no-frills Hunger Games. Worth a watch.
For some reason Mary the thought of you is always entering my mind throughout the day?
I just watched this movie. It is so good nice to see your reaction to it. I hope you are doing the volume 2 very soon
That sequence with the people silhouetted against the blue background, is the second-most beautiful and memorable in all of Tarantino's work, in my opinion.
Twisted Nerve is the film the whistle song is from. It is an old-school horror film.
This film and Terminator 2 are my 2 favourite action films in the world, they both have badass women who fight so awesomely and I love them so much
Kill Bill 1 is good but Kill Bill 2? It’s a masterpiece! The best fights, her training with Pao Mei and the ending… muah! Chefs kiss!
it’s one of those movies you have to watch part two. Can’t wait to see your reaction.
Fun fact Zoe Bell from Death Proof is actually Uma Thurman’s stuntwoman in this!
The big fight scene is IMO the best fight scene of all time on screen. Just epic!
Since you have seen "Death Proof", you've seen Zoe Bell (who I love) who was Uma's stunt double.
"She coulda just pegged him". Never have truer words been spoken
So happy to see you finally got around to the legendary revenge of The Bride. She is a Badass, undeniably with a capital B.
I just watched your reaction for the 2nd time! I am eagerly anticipating part two!
@19:18 "She coulda just pegged him..." I'm literally dying laughing.
The Man for Okinawa, Hattori Hanzō, played by the great Sonny Chiba.
May he rest in peace
“She could have just pegged him!” 😂😂
I was in a coma for a few weeks. Kill Bill 1&2 are two favorites of mine. I’m not an action person but I love these movies
