You're correct that it's "gimmick-y" and that's intentional! Both movies pay homage to the old martial arts epics (themes of vengence, over-the-top effects, wild fight choreo) and classic figures like Bruce Lee (yellow track suit from Game of Death) The song while Uma Thurman is riding the motorcycle is the theme song drom Green Hornet, another old and short-lived martial arts TV show. I can't wait to see you watch Part 2!!
The "Matrix" fighting vibe you're getting is Hong Kong style action, specifically John Woo. Both Kill Bill and Matrix action scenes were HEAVILY influenced by his style. I think parts of Kill Bill were filmed in Hong Kong which gives it that uniqueness. HK's action and stunt work is incredible. Especially the early Jackie Chan stuff. Edit: The silhouette shot during the sword fight with the blue background. Such a fucking flex and show boat move and it works 100%.
Extremely weird fun fact about Daryl Hannah, the actress who plays Elle Driver: in 1984 she starred in a smash hit romantic comedy with Tom Hanks called Splash, where she played a mermaid who gets legs and falls in love with Tom Hanks?? ANYWAY, Tom Hanks asks her what her name is, and she doesn't have a normal one because she's a mermaid, so she looks up at a street sign that says "Madison Avenue" and decides her name is "Madison." So, why am I telling you this? Because the next year, "Madison" showed up as a popular baby name. Daryl Hannah is the reason Madison became a popular name lol.
@@SweetZombiJesus I think it just started charting in 1985 and kept rising, I think the movie just ignited the trend and it snowballed before peaking in the late 90s, early 2000s
I remember seeing this in the theater. It was amazing and it got a standing ovation! We were bummed when we heard it was being split into two instead of one long movie but it was better in the end because Tarantino was able to make the two films feel full and satisfying on their own.
11:37 😭😭😭💀💀 IM CRACKING UP! I hold this movie so close to my heart. You were talking about in the beginning how you , as a child, weren’t into gore and things. I watched this when i was 8 roughly, and it changed my whole life practically. i enjoy this movie multiple times a year.
Regarding the Matrix comparisons, Chinese martial arts films were doing this kind of wire work for literal decades. If anything, that's the common source of inspiration that both the Matrix and this film draw from. And it doesn't hurt the comparison that Yuen Woo-ping was the fight coordinator on both films.
The reason you’re thinking Lucy Liu is from Matrix is because you’re picturing her in the *most iconic* scene from Charlie’s Angels when she wears a skin tight leather skirt, an aesthetic heavily associated with the matrix, for the purposes of distracting people under cover. I will never forget that scene. And I used to think I was straight….
This movie was instantly one of my all time favorites the first time I saw it in the theater, I loved it so much I went and rewatched it a few weeks later and bought the DVD when it came out later on
Hattori Hanzo thought she may be English (like from England), because she speaks English. American was probably his second guess. I love the way he changed his mind to create a sword for her.
Elle Driver is named California Mountain Snake, like that snake doesn't have venom, maybe that's why she uses some poison on a syringe to try to kill the Bride, and a black mamba to kill Budd. just guessing.
The code names are not random. They're all named after snakes. There are talks about a 3rd film with Vernita's daughter coming back for revenge for the death of her mother & she may go up against the bride's daughter
This was Tarantino’s love letter to old Japanese martial arts movies. In an interview he explained how he makes movies inspired by the soundtrack he chooses. He goes in old record stores to find forgotten songs that move him. He imagines each song in the movie and what the actions will be during it.
The film didn’t explain this very well, but there is a code amongst these assassins. I don’t necessarily think it’s a moral one. I think it’s about honor. Maybe it’s not even a code of honor. It could just mean that you’re not as good as you think you are, if you do what they call “bushwhacking.“ Which is what Vernita did by trying to kill her with a sneak attack.
@@marzblaq7267 took me a while to understand as well. That’s why even though Elle hated her, she respected her enough to know that she deserved better than some cowardly ambush. I figured it out after reading Tarantino’s script for the movie. After Vernita was dealt the fatal blow, she apologized to Uma for the ambush, instead of facing her in battle.
Just put her in rice and she'll get back up 🤣🤣💀💀 Subbed ❤ thanks for the laughs (Movie suggestion, 'Lucky Number Slevin'. 2006, Crime drama, with a dark comedic edge.)

"So he birthed that sound effect?" No. QT doesn't birth many things. He robs from the past like a producer uses samples. That "siren" effect is part of an old 70s cop show theme (Ironside). The filmmaking styles are a collage of many things - Japanese samurai/Yakuza movies, Hong Kong martial arts, 60s Italian westerns, 70s Italian horror, you name it. The soundtrack is similar - loads of retro tunes, many associated with particular movies or genres from the past. Even the cast are references - Sonny Chiba (Hanzo) and Michael Parks (recurring sheriff) etc are chosen because of the movies they previously made (Bill and Pai Mei too in part 2 but no spoilers here). Tarantino just turns all of this into the tastiest gumbo. That's his genius. Oh - the feet close-up? That's *very* much a Quentin thing. 😬
I wouldn’t say he robs. QT has always talked about and showed who his influences were and constantly goes on and on about 70s cinema and pop culture. Id say a director who is now respected as a “genius”that robbed was Jordan Peele in get out. All that praise for a movie that is The Stepford Wives, but he creatively choose to replace women with black people. He’s missing brilliant writing, ect like QT. Also Quentin’s love of cinema and ability to consolidate and pack the past and present into great films ( with great characters and writing) opened up a wave of new films and new ideas that were pretty good. You want a suggestion for a movie? Well, you seem to have an appreciation for powerful cinema, so, have a go at Once Were Warriors (1994). It's a challenging watch at times, but it is a spectacular piece. Possibly the second-most powerful piece of cinema to come out of New Zealand after the LotR trilogy (which are also films that everyone should watch through once in their lifetime).
This movie is sort of a tribute to older martial arts and grindhouse movies. Matrix copied a lot of the moves with wire work from those movies. You should probably check out some martial arts movies from the 60s and 70s. Particularly any Shaw Brothers films. Five Deadly Venoms, Master Killer (36 Chambers), Fist of the White Lotus just to name a few. The bald guy with the mask is Gordon Liu. He was a big Shaw Brothers martial arts star. He starred in Master Killer, Fist of the White Lotus and many others. He plays a character (Pie Mai) he fought in Fist of the White Lotus in Kill Bill 2. The guy playing Hatori Honzo is Sonny Chiba, he's a Japanese Karate movie star. Check out Street Fighter and Daughter of Street Fighter.
If you’ll watch horror, please react to The Exorcist (1973), if you haven’t already seen it!! Just recently found your channel, and love your reactions!
Just want to clarify once more... the matrix exaggerated fighting style is not what kill bill was trying to do... is a homage to old school asian cinema...just google and watch some clips of those kung fu films ... they are hilarious
Actually, there's one code name that isn't a venomous snake. "The California mountain kingsnake is a species of nonvenomous colubrid snake that is endemic to North America. It is a coral snake mimic, having a similar pattern consisting of red, black, and yellow on its body, but the snake is completely harmless." Amusingly, that's Elle's codename - a nonvenomous snake for the one assassin who is apparently fine with poisoning people in their coma. Ironic...
This is an homage to 70’s Kung Fu flics. That’s why physics had “left the building.”
O-Ren: "You might not last 5 minutes."

I’d be happy to watch you to react to any Tarantino you haven’t yet seen! Or almost anything by Luc Besson
Or David Cronenberg!
My favorite film ❤
Darryl Hannah, You watch Sens8?
i cant believe you show the end at the start..
All the familiar songs you heard... were because of this film...
Crazy right. Like a huge full circle moment 😂
Gogo weapon was a meteor hammer 😂
The 4 Assassins and The Bride's (aka Uma) each codename was a Type of deadly venomous snake hence, The Deadly Viper 🐍Assassination Squad . 😉
Ironic...
