Unlike Midori, Miyako is self-taught on guitar, working her way through a popular instructional series in Japan titled "Mechanical Phrase-training from Hell". Queen have always been popular in Japan, and any number of guitarists have mentioned Brian May as an influence. Gary Moore has been mentioned elsewhere by Miyako as an influence. 2014 Winter Olympics men's figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu skated to Moore's "Parisienne Walkways" on his way to a gold medal, and there was a subsequent Gary Moore boom in Japan-that might be when Miyako caught on to him.

Over the years, Miyako has mentioned lots of influences, including Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmore, Gary Moore, Joe Satriani, and of course Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and more. She just absorbs everything and processes it into her own thing.

The only surprise for me was Miyako not mentioning Gary Moore as one of her major influences.
Yeah, she hasn't mentioned Gary Moore in ages. I just think that both of them have so many influences and favorites that their lists change constantly. Maybe Miyako was feeling more Brian May than Gary Moore when this show was taped.
My thoughts exactly, but then I know they both have many influences and when you're limited to 5......
I'm sure I heard her say before that Richie Blackmore was her favourite guitarist from hearing her mother playing her Deep Purple and Rainbow albums when she was growing up.
As a guitarist I would list the 5 artists that were CURRENTLY influencing my playing as I strive for new levels of playing but I would tell you that ALL of the guitarists I listed in the past still informed how I played today. If you asked me the 25 guitarists - that would be a better list. lol
