    Thanks for showing all those connectors behind the head unit. I think the connector which you said you didn't use is actually the one I need to hook into for the steering wheel controls, but I couldn't figure out what the other connections on it went to and what the other side of the plug would be. Seeing that you didn't even use it makes me feel better about fabricating a connector that only grabs the one connection I need off it.

    Late to this party, but, thanks! I was planning to do this to my wife's 2006 Outback but the LL Bean edition has dual climate control which is slightly different. I can't find a JDM bezel that has the correct controls and the knobs aren't offset in the dual climate control version (different controls).

      I’m sorry Roman. I did this video so long ago I don’t think the guy makes them anymore. I searched and haven’t found him. When I purchased the harness 6 years ago I didn’t even think I was going to get it then one day it should up. I too was so happy for that.
      Have you looking into seeing if you can get a part the plastic peace and make your own? I feel like that would be the best option I don’t think anyone makes these harnesses anymore because of how old the car is

    Hi! I have a 2008 Outback with factory navigation. I bought the car used a week ago, and the navigation screen is broken. I'm looking to replace it entirely with an aftermarket one rather than repair the factory screen (because that one doesn't have Bluetooth and other features that the aftermarket ones tend to have). Do you know if it's possible to install it in the area above the climate controls? I would hate to have a dead screen on top and a working one on bottom.

      On 2005-2009 Legacy and Outback models built in Subaru's USA plant, the radio and HVAC controls are all on one large PC board. So when you remove the factory radio you'll also be removing the HVAC controls. That's why people use the JDM HVAC panel kit.

      On some Legacy/Liberty/Outback models (especially those outside of the USA and Canada), even when the factory stereo has a button labeled "AUX" the car lacks the wiring harness and 3.5mm aux jack. In those cars, it is possible to add a harness that will let you connect and use an aux audio source. There are aftermarket vendors in the USA, Australia, and probably other countries who sell those.

    Hi, Quick question from a Subaru owner with no stereo install experience. When you connect the 14 pin harness wires to the HU harness do you match up all colours? eg. white to white, gray to gray, etc.. OR are the speaker connections typically different colours? Thanks for your help.

    • @dirtywhitellama
      @dirtywhitellama 3 роки тому +1

      Probably too late to help you, but if anyone else has this same question, the 14 pin harness and the HU harness should each come with a chart that indicates what each color of wire is. A lot of them are pretty standard (power, accessory/switched power, ground, front and rear speakers) and will generally be the same, but different manufacturers sometimes pick different colors for the less standard stuff like parking brake signal, steering wheel controls, etc.

      The JDM HVAC panel kits are only sold by Subaru in Japan. Only 2 or 3 vendors in Japan sell them new (and still do as of early 2023). Some auto salvage companies in Japan have also started selling them from cars they were removed from. You can occasionally also find them from sellers in the USA on eBay, but they get snapped up quickly. IMPORTANT: Be sure that the HVAC panel kit you buy has EXACTLY the same type of HVAC controls/buttons/knobs as those on your car's original stereo and HVAC panel (other than possibly being mirrored left/right for RHD vs. LHD cars).

      No, Legacys/Libertys/Outbacks built in Subaru's Japan plant do not need the i88 adapter harness shown in this video. Only models built in Subaru's USA plant do. A Japan-built car's i88 harness will have all of the signals that the HVAC panel in the JDM kit needs, so you can plug the car's i88 directly into the new HVAC panel. You will still need an aftermarket 14-pin installation harness to make the power and speaker connections to your new aftermarket stereo. If your car also has steering wheel audio controls and/or the 3.5mm aux jack, you might want a different harness to retain those.

      @@tkay826 You must have purchased an aftermarket stereo that included "plug-and-play" harnesses to connect to your Legacy's factory radio harnesses. That is normally not the case for "name brand" stereos (Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood, Alpine, etc.). A bit more common with stereos from China.

      BrokenWrench's car does not, but for cars that do have them -- yes it is possible. You will want another adapter harness that BrokenWrench did not mention (to connect to the car's harness that Subaru designates "i85").

      Marius Hansen I think it is just in Fahrenheit, but if you get one ask them if you can get one in celsius

      The units are determined by a different module in the car, so it will display the temperatures in Celsius if your original HVAC controls did, or Fahrenheit if your HVAC showed that before.

    I have a 2006 ob xt with stock navigation system. can i do this?

    • @SVXdc
      @SVXdc 2 роки тому

      Yes you can.
      In USA-built 2006-2009 Legacys/Outbacks, the OEM navigation system is actually separate from the OEM head unit. The nav system consists of 1) the unit under the driver's seat (which has the GPS portion and maps on a DVD), 2) the monitor screen, and 3) a GPS antenna behind/above the instrument cluster. The OEM HU merely plays the nav's audio.
      The OEM nav system and monitor screen will continue working without the OEM HU. The only thing you'll lose are the nav audio prompts and beeps when you press the hard keys below the monitor.
      The monitor screen also has a 4-pin socket for a rear camera, and a yellow female RCA jack for an aux video input. Some people have used those even after changing to an aftermarket stereo.
