If you were making roast lamb leg with roast potatoes you wouldn’t add cheese similar with a joint of beef ? Why is it so bad to leave out the cheese in this ? Mashed potatoes if you do them right don’t require any cheese. •Sugar
•Salt
•Anchovies
•Tamarind extract
•Onions (originally shallots)
•Garlic

Hey Andrew, Irish man here and fan of all things Babish. If it hasn't been pointed out before Shepard's Pie is not really a traditional Irish dish, more English (the sworn enemies :)) Also, it's traditionally made with minced lamb, the minced beef version is called Cottage Pie. Still looks delish so fair play to ya!
Woops, you got the lamb/beef thing sorted so I take that back.
I made a vegetarian version of this with Beyond Meat sausages, lots of vegan butter and some Guinness draught stout. I added mushrooms to make it a little earthier and "meatier". This states wonderful! I'm flipping out. This is the best shepherd's pie I've ever had. Thanks for the inspiration!! You've made my St. Patrick's Day during this difficult time with the virus spreading and not being able to celebrate like a true roudy Irish-American blooded woman. I really appreciate your existence and your cookbook. It's amazing. Okay. Bye.

"Use the frozen ones, they're better"
Somewhere, Gordon Ramsay has awakened screaming
Well, frozen peas are better. They're "fresher" because they're often frozen in origin, conserving their original taste and consistency, whereas "fresh" peas have a whole lot of travelling and withering to do before being bought and used.
@@dnlkr Could say that about a lot of produce
ah whatever, at least they're more convenient, imagine getting perfectly ripe peas ready for a TV Show, then again you could just lie and say they're perfect. TV magic
Gordon uses frozen peas. There's a video of him making fish and mushy peas on youtube where he uses frozen peas. It's understood that frozen peas are a great product.
@@Magicalmetric peas, sweet corn (of the Cobb) are better. Carrots broccoli and coliflour is good frozen if used as a ingredient not on it's own tho.

Legend has it Babish has spent thousands of years letting flavors get to know each other..
Babish: "This Shepard's pie contains four distinctly Irish ingredients the first of which as you can image in potatoes..."
Native Americans: "Wait? What?!"
Conaidering the Irish took to the potato like crazy, I'm oretty sure nowadays you can also consider it Irish.
Why not both
@@warellis it's not native to Ireland still
@@ohbby4946 We know that. But they've turned it into becoming a big part of their cuisine.
Hell there are specific varieties of potatoes now that have their origins in Ireland.
@@warellis So did the French, British and Dutch.
5:40 "You could leave the cheese out of this recipe entirely"
How dare you, sir.
You can absolutely leave the cheese out of this, I am English and have grown up on shepherds pie and cottage pie and never once has any family member or any restaurant I’ve had it in put cheese in the mash. If you were making roast lamb leg with roast potatoes you wouldn’t add cheese similar with a joint of beef ? Why is it so bad to leave out the cheese in this ? Mashed potatoes if you do them right don’t require any cheese. Just add a good amount of butter and you will be fine or if you need more dairy add milk but for a shepherds or cottage pie I would never add cheese.
I'm Irish and I have never had this with cheese. Americans cant help adding cheese to things.
I finally know how those Italian chefs felt with the carbonara recipe. This looks delicious, but tomato paste should never go anywhere near a sheperd's pie.
This is rather jaw hanging...umm...it's not really a shepherd's pie is it?
Never really heard of that lol wonder if it tastes better or worse though
It may not be authentic, but it really adds umami, deeper richer flavor. Add to the tradition.
@@marcpeterson1092 It really strikes me odd. Like is the shepherd's pie supposed to be objectively worse just because it isn't traditional? Zero logic from these people.
