I find that no matter where you live or where you eat, you always come back to that familiar comforting taste you grew up witg. Nobody makes better food than what your mother cooked for you as a child. I will never forget that my mother never opened cans or frozen meals, when I came home from school there was always soup and a second-course meal cooked by my mother. She was a working mother but always found time to cook for me and my brother, now I'm the one who mostly cooks :P
the thing about shepherds pie is every kid in the UK grew up on on it. To this day when i end up going home mum still Cooks it for me no matter how bad a day or week is going home and having Shepherd's pie on the table with family around you is the moments i cherish
good on you Gordon, for never forgetting your roots and never looking down on on someone who has lesser means than you do nowadays. that kitchen of yours is an absolute DREAM of mine since I love cooking and baking, but, alas, it's 4 old-fashioned stoves and a sink for me atm. Every bit of preparing, I have to literally do on the stove. I still turn out 3-4 varieties of christmas cookies out each year, the sheets just have to rest on my bed while the next portion is going in, and I can make a full 3 course meal if asked to. I guess that's the real skill, making something out of nothing and make the best out of the tiniest of spaces. Thought me a lot. Still can't wait for a bigger kitchen so I can *really* spread my culinary wings Thanks again for these videos

Oh my goodness this takes me back to my gran she always did a dinner and pudding from scratch her food was so good steamed treacle pudding with custard and she made a shepherds pie to die for
I remember those dishes as well. Also my mum did a steamed bacon and leek pudding, that was delicious. As Gordon's mum said, brings back good memories. As a kid I wanted cheap burgers etc. Now I would gladly give up everything for my mums home cooked food. She also did a fantastic cheese and onion pie made her own rough puff pastry

Her cheese and onion pie went like this: large pie dish greased with butter, rough puff pastry baked blind, cheese onion and potato filling the rough puff pastry topping with added cheese in it and cheese sprinkled on top. My mouth is actually watering lol

awww this brings back so many good memories for me too, my Grandpa was Walsh, he came to South Africa after his dad got the black lung from the first world war. My Grandpa used to make those potato cakes he called them potato pan cakes, I loved his food. After he passed away I always wanted to know how he made them, and here you are making them, now I can finally make them myself, I tried a few times but never tasted like my grandpa's but I got a feeling the way you made them Gordon is going to be the way to go.

I love Gordon's recipe for Shepherds Pie than the old way my Nanna & mother made it, I dislike carrots & peas being in the meat & enjoy them separately, of course some people can't eat peas but can eat beans, or broad beans. I always put red wine in my meat casseroles it gives it a great boost & makes it more flavoursome. All the other dishes look completely yum & I wouldn't change them. Wonderful video thoroughly enjoyed this.
Oregano and butter in beans makes a boring tin taste amazing! Red wine in mince is life changing if you cook it out properly. A transitioning woman told me that information at an archaeology dig site. Took her advice, now I tell EVERYBODY.

Use vinegar as a substitute for wine especially apple cider vinegar... It's acidic in nature so, covers almost all of the wine qualities
You could use red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar. If you wanted you could also see about a combination of balsamic vinegar and white vinegar
