The Class80 from MM Studio is a huge, heavy piece of retro goodness. Dripped in full beige, it sports a buzzer, a solenoid, and an aesthetic that just won't quit. The group buy is open now, but if that's not your jam, we'll also look at the Vortex KBt RE: 68 that gives you the same vibes for a lot less money AND wait time.

Ok so as LagSpike pointed out, they make plates in both pcb-mount AND plate-mount stab options which would have never dawned on me.
So ignore the part about the plate not working w the stabs. Super weird choice but it got right by me.
Yeah looking at the closeup of the plate at 1:06 you can see the left side of the spacebar. It has those dumbbell flanges you see around plate mount stabilizers so it's definitely a plate mount stab arrangement.
It really defies logic.
"Here's an option for putting worse stabilizers on your board that only adds to confusion for newcomers to the hobby and increases our overheads and production costs."
Edit: just realized it sounds like I'm saying you're a newcomer which I'm not lol. I meant for people buying their first mid tier board.
I’m at the point of my keyboard journey where I despise group buy.
why are they bad?
@@chunkymilk1288 how many group buys have you participated? I still got key caps that I group buy from 2 years ago that haven’t got
@@chunkymilk1288 You'll be waiting a long time. That's about it. I ordered a Rama Works U80-B on April 8th 2022, and I probably won't see it until at least April 2024.
I wonder, why would they take that much time? I just know that’s a feature of GB: loooong waiting times and quite expensive price.
@@santiago.ordonez It's mostly due to economies of scale. Most group buys are for limited runs. They have to have all the money up front to be able to arrange for the manufacturing to take place, and the outfits capable of manufacturing these things probably have a schedule at least a year in advance.
If these keyboards were being manufactured by Corsair or something they'd be done immediately, because Corsair has the money to throw at it and has probably already reserved manufacturing space / time.
Likewise, the price is high for the same reason. Corsair et al buy switches and such in such bulk that they get big discounts. Group Buys don't get such discounts, which automatically raises the price, and for custom keyboards most of them are solid anodized aluminum in much thicker sizes, so the price is just going up for this build quality too.
I love how much you’ve adapted to the keyboard hobby from not caring about how pcb looks, to caring the colour of your stabilizers
For the stabilizers being tight on the plate, I believe you were probably using the plate mounted version of the FR4. The stab cutouts for the plate and the pcb mounted plates are different, and honestly not sure why they included a plate mount to begin with in the box. Alexotos had the same problem of his stabs being too tight, and was informed later on he was using the wrong plate version for the stabilizers. Just something for people to be aware of if they choose to go into the group buy.
Could be - they just included some REALLY random stuff in my kit. There’s even a Class65 pcb in here lol
And only one FR4 plate option
was looking for something with the retro look for so long.... and i saw this today and because of this video I pulled the trigger. Thanks for always making great content around the keeb community.
Love the autumn sun scenes, thank you for your work and yet another wonderful video
That top mount sound is really nice, the aesthetic on this is really fun
I’m watching this on my lunch break at work and legit laughed out loud for longer than I should have at the “massive forehead” joke. Well done Brian
I aim to please 😁
Oh oh.. UA-cam hasn't been showing me Badseed Tech on my feed. Have missed over a month's content. I just found this vid today.
Was going to get one but getting another board this month soooo I'll get an extra or round 2 depending on how I feel, another great vid BadSeed!
brings me back to 'video game highschool'
Great review, the humor was top notch. Love the hat BTW :)
Really cool looking board
That is one polished build! Perfect arti for it...mmm
"broken in" cherry and it still sounds like fine sand
Stay up king
That sub $200 board was a nice find. Probably going to pick one up just for the hell of it
I know this is gonna be a banger of a review even before watching it!
Classy man going with MX Blacks on the retro board. The OG and Cherry's bread and butter for decades.
MX black scratch reigns supreme, can't tell me otherwise. (Unless you talking about vintage blacks)
Oof, the price is steep but it's also everything I've been looking for in my dream keyboard project. i have some ZealPC Clickiez switches I've been holding onto to build a retro-style board
For just over $100, I can still recommend the Unicomp New Model M and/or Mini M. They're not customizable but... well if you grew up using hand-me-down computers from the 90s then you know there's nothing that feels or sounds quite like it ⌨️💕
If that Vortex board was aluminum instead of plastic, I would be so in on that.
i have one and its very quality plastic. feels extremely sturdy, much more than I was expecting. couldn't recommend one more
I so so so wish I could get this in my country. Seriously I miss my first/oldest keyboard so very much.
Solenoid is life. I wish my MM Class 65 had one.
The Class 80 is nice, 80% layout, hella heavy with the brass weight, and different plates. Just put the 9009 and it looks good. At the same time i dont think everyone should get it just because it's a retro look or something. That buzzer thing tho.....
I just realised that you bought a new scale to weigh the new heavy keyboards over 3 kg.
nice content mate
Whoa. That Vortex you sneaked in at the end -- really compelling. I've already got a Class 65, pretty compelled by the 80 in red -- but that Vortex with its curves is an out-of-nowhere looker, too. And with Bluetooth at under $200? Super tempting.
By the way, loved your shots with the window shade lighting.
I have the Vortex and it also has 2.4ghz connection! :D
As someone who owns one it blew my mind and impressed me how good it was, especially for a pre-built. I bought it 100% for the looks since it's made after the PBM PC 66. The unboxing experience is second to none, nostalgia vibes were off the chart. I'm already on the list for their next board which is based on the model M.
Man, I really let custom keyboards draw my attention away from the old school masters. Vortex unsurprisingly has evolved since the Pok3r days.
How's the typing feel on these?
@@MarcoCarag pretty amazing. I went for clicky switches cause I feel retro inspired board should be clicky. I mean this board has most of the fany new stuff tweaks and feature that have come out in the past couple years.
@@MarcoCarag really good even on stock. The mx red hyperglides feels smooth what more if it’s lubed. Also the keycaps feel premium for me 😀
those cherries sound great. nice and chalky
If this had a 10 key I would be all over it! Really like this whole vibe.
Incredible video as always Sir! And if I may say so here, the real winner of this video is Vortex with their incredible KBt and PC66 line. I just got mine and I'm BLOWN AWAY by how good this little 65% is for the price! Now let's hope MechanicalKeyboards (the store I cannot put the full name here XD) can stock up again on these babies in the US, cause I'm recommending them to everybody I know who's after a good bang/buck hot-swap small form factor keyboard!
You had me at “that’s not funny” 😂❤
I already have a KBt Re: 66 and that made me want to get the class 80 so bad. So I did.
If they ever sell just the case in plastic, and the board, I'd be very interested. I'd love to experiment with the solenoid striking different materials like wood, ceramic, etc. The Vortex is a looker.
This with DCS deadbeats would be a dream combo I think
Id love to see this with no foam, sa caps ontop jades or clack equivilent
you're using the plate mount stabilizer plate (the fr4 one)! That's why the PCB mount stabilizers didn't work well!!
Yeah figured that one out. Wonder why they would even make plate-mount plates, super weird choice
@@badseedtech Plate mount stabs are still a huge thing in China apparently. Also I'm using them to do a really unique build with mine!
I think that top mount config with zeal clickiez would satisfy my craving for a clicky retro board
But it's a group buy, so there goes my dream
b e i g e
Makes classic inspired keyboard, forgets Alps support
Wait I wanted sound test with FR4 plate + solenoid/Buzzer LMAO
WANT!
It reminds me the old Commodore Amiga.
I wonder if they got permission from Nintendo before including that design on the bottom of this expensive ass case
Whooooooo!!!
OOF that solenoid sounds nothing like a traditional one. Looks like a fun board though.
I love the case and design but I'm not spending $300+ on keyboards anymore lol. The solenoid sounds weak but maybe it's the mic setup, on the Model F it's loud because the impact echoes through the case but this kb is full of foam and weights which would minimize it (or maybe I'm way off).
I'm going to order with brass pcb plate.
What do you think about it?
Someone started watching Noel
what is your main mouse i have almost as big hands as you and same aiming style. been looking everywhere for big mouse reviews and everyone screams deathadder but i feel like its very small both in height width and length. do you have any recomendations?
This board is begging for some really nice sproingy switches
I love the aesthetics on it, but the sound isn’t doing anything for me. It just sounded way too hollow, although the top mount configuration helped a bit. I’d be interested to hear how it sounds with a force break mod, though.
That beeper would make my girlfriend leave me but honestly I'm willing to take the dive on this one
Damn…that stussy drip! Wonder what kind of shoes this man rocks???
Current lineup is Jordan 1 Retro Stealth, NMD v2 Triple Black, Yeezy Carbons, Blazer Low Jumbo Retros 🤙🏼
It looks retro, but since it's a solid chunk of aluminum, it won't sound retro.
As a clicky switch lover I wish someone would make a 100% that's huge like this but plastic and hollow so it'll actually sound like it looks.
Modern THOKback
Here's a pencil holder if you wanna write...
Heh, by *hand* 🤓
have a stinky day mr seed
:)
Can someone help me understand why a lot of youtubers will change the title of their videos? I was under the thought that calling the Class 80 "That 70's Keyboard" in the title was a powermove. I get if its a matter of appealing to a younger audience that might not know of the show, but dang. What a catchy title.
love this but keyboards are crazy expensive and not worth imo
I would totally get it if it wasn't for the $400 price tag after shipping
weird keyboards! ... nice vid' - - we need more 2.4 ghz wireless conection on this babies... not BT connection.
No split backspace or split right shift? That’s gonna be a no from me, dawg
Just get the solder pcb then?
Lamp
Caps/num/scroll indicators?!???
Nice
CO
aching
“That’s not funny.” 🧑🏼🦲
there is also one keyboard kit on ali express that is retro like and it even use plastic and from what ive heard from people it sounds just like old mechboard. it called ncr 80 and it is instock
Not gonna lie, a lil disappointed with the sound. Considering that those mx blacks have an imo nice clacky high pitched sound. This board kind of dulls it. Nonetheless this board looks fantastic, might be interested in getting one.
Not a single review on BLE version.
Busy at work and can't watch just yet.
But what part of this board is 70s?
Both the IBM and Famicom designs are mid 80s
None, but That 80s Board doesn’t work as well as a title lol
@@badseedtech ahhh gotcha
I'm stoked for this to arrive tho
Class65 is my current daily at work
@@badseedtech also the FR4 playe you recieved was meant for Plate Mount stabs
That's why it was tight
I love how much I hate this. I kinda wanna get it
Cmon bruv Ive just recieved my coarse60 and joined another gb dont do this to me xD
*sigh*
Opens wallet.
NCR80 is pretty much a basic, plastic version of this.
three to four months lmao. what have we become
Faster at fulfilling keyboard groupbuys versus a year ago?
"Group buy"
nah
Mind if I give a constructive feedback? Your reviews are still awesome but for those following you for quite some time (like me) you used to be way more energetic and excited (positively speaking) in your reviews ... in the last reviews you sounded calm and even a little "tired" .. not sure if there is anything wrong but I thought I should give you this honest feedback .. get up and keep the good work bud ! :)
That's gonna look like piss after enough time in the sun. Fantastic!
It's not plastic
Why would you keep it in the sun..?
@@StfuSiriusly because my windows aren't tinted and I'm not gonna put a blanket over it on my desk but fr that shits metal but all the old keyboards it's imitating yellowed over time
With this kind of money you can get a reproduction Model F keyboard which has capacitive buckling spring and die-cast zinc casing.
The extra weight of the Model F actually provides better structural integrity and the switch is optimized for typing, while the switch on this board is generic and the brass weight does nothing other than increase the weight. This thing is a disgrace IMO.
nice board, disappointing sound.
