  • Products used in this video (I may receive a small commission on sales via this link):
    12 volt 12 AH Battery: amzn.to/3X6O1Dc
Replacement Harness (an all-in-one solution - no wiring!): amzn.to/3MpKprm
    Butt Connector Multi-Pack: amzn.to/3T93v8D
Slide Connectors (verify size on the battery you buy): amzn.to/3ABvkA4
    30 Amp Inline Fuse: amzn.to/3Xk9fiy
I'm going to show you how you can create an adapter using your old, dead, Power Wheels battery and use any generic 12 volt SLA battery. Don't spend $60+ on a new battery! You can purchase one from Amazon for about $25 that will give you more run time. Then, using your old battery and about $7 worth of stuff from any hardware store you'll be up and running in about 10 minutes!
    What you'll need:
    A 12 volt battery (I purchased a 12 volt, 12 amp battery from Amazon)
    Your old Power Wheels battery
    Butt connectors
    Female slide connectors
    30 amp inline fuse
Forgive my sloppy wiring in the video, I went back and did a better job before using it

As an instrumentation and electrical guy there are some things wrong. Crimping tool is marked on the end with yellow, blue, and red dots these correspond to the color of the insulated connector being crimped in this case blue connectors this the curved area with the blue dot. The crimper portion he uses in the video is for uninsulated terminals. Now for terminal selection he is using blue insulated terminals which is for 14-16 gauge wire which he struggled and had to twist on the wire. Based on the video it was a struggle which indicates the incorrect size wire terminals should probably be yellow which is for 10-12 gauge wire terminals. I don't know about the 30 amp fuse selection likely a bit too large for the application. Female insulated spade terminals can be purchased with a plastic protective cover to prevent possible shorts. Just do your research and think things thru this does involve children's safety and last thing you want to do is melt down a power wheel with your loved one in it.

I went to try this same sort of project and couldn’t manage getting past step 1 lol the damn connector inside the battery was completely glued in solid. I tried heating up the glue and slowly prying it out but it kept snapping and wouldn’t budge. The power wheels manufacturer must have caught on to how simple this was for a battery swap and started gluing them in…

Something I would like to add is sometimes spraying electric contact cleaner on the leads will fix the battery problem. It's a special spray you get in the automotive department that's safe to use on the connectors

    • @randomstuff25

I won’t pretend to be an electrical engineer or anything, but my understanding is that the fuse is there for safety. It will cut the power from the battery if need be, possibly avoiding melting of components or an electrical fire. Maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject can chime in?

Thanks for such a useful video. Can you please tell me why you chose a 30 amp fuse ? I have no electrical background but as I understand, this fuse will blow up when current reaches to 30 amps in overload condition. But can a 12 ah ( that you have used give out 30 amps ?)

    • @AdamHawkesDeveloper
      @AdamHawkesDeveloper 5 років тому +2

Yes, the 12ah battery can put out over 30 amps.
The amp-hour rating on a battery tells you the overall capacity. A 12ah battery might put out one amp for 12 hours, or 12 amps for 1 hour, or 120 amps for 6 minutes. The problem with the last situation is that 120 amps is a lot of current, and will heat up the system, possibly even causing the battery to explode!
      Hope this helps.
