  • This video is going over step by step how to revive a dead battery that wont charge using the provided charger.
Kids ride on toys usually have sealed lead acid batteries (SLA)
6 volt and 12 volt batteries can both be done using this method, just match the voltage of the battery you are reviving.
6 volts to 6 volts and 12 volts to 12 volts.
Smart chargers have built in programmes that refuse to charge batteries with voltage that's too low, so a little bit of a hack to trick the charger into playing ball is needed.
If this helps in any way, please consider a thumbs up or leave a comment.
Thanks for stopping in and be sure to check my playlists, I have something for everyone, budget tool reviews, homemade weaponry, 3d printing, and lots more.
Do not attempt to try this at home, unless you are aware of the necessary precautions that need to be taken.
very hazardous chemicals and dangerous reactions.

Went through the procedure with two sla batteries today. They showed 12.5v before topping up. Both took quite a lot of water. I've got them on the trickle charger now and will put them to work in a day or two. Really appreciate your clear, straightforward demo - thanks!

I had got a booster jump pack that had broken so I took the battery to find out it was completely dead. I found your video and was blown away. I didn't have any distilled water but by the grace of God it is raining here in Pennsylvania so I went out and got a cup of rain water and followed your instructions. I could not believe it worked. This battery sat after taking it out of the pack for about 2 yrs. Now it's taking a charge. Unbelievable!!!! Thank you so much!!!!

@@Oneklickmediathat's the problem this should fix. You could also buy battery acid at a local parts store for 10 bucks and carefully drain the old acid (there won't be much) then top them off with the new. In my opinion the acid is a better option but I'm far from an expert.

In these sealed batteries the electrolyte is supposed to be completely absorbed by the gel in the separator, so the fact there is no liquid is normal. But at the same time it is indeed the common failure mode for these to loose the water from the electrolyte over time, so they do need refill. But problem is, it is difficult to judge the correct amount, you never know how much of water is actually missing.
And to get the water really back into the gel where it will actually work needs time, so not-as-smart trickle charger left on it for a week or so will be just enough to charge the electrodes along the water diffusing back in.

I worked in Gallaghers Service department for 12 years from 1978 - we used similar batteries (completely closed) on solar units. These batteries would go high resistance so could not be charged by normal means... what we did was have a 2uF or 4uf 250VAC capacitor in series with mains, my case 250 VAC onto the battery - even a couple of hours would bring them back.

Have to put a 12v trickle charger on it for a day to get the voltage high enough the smart charger will think its 12v battery and start charging. I can't find any old chargers on Ebay. Hook the good battery up to the bad battery to get the voltage up and hook your charger up to the good battery. That way the bad battery is pulling a charge from the good battery and the good battery is pulling a charge from the charger this eliminates the step of hooking up the jump start.

    • @oraclescave
      @oraclescave  4 роки тому +5

Yes but the idea of the video was to show someone who only had one battery, that they can link to something else with 12 volt, like a car or motorbike with jumper cables, just to trick the charger into working.
When I first used this charger on a 12v battery I had that issue with no other 12v spare battery and was unable to charge the battery, that's why I made the video the way I did.
Its quick and simple for people who may not have tried anything like this before, your way would work, but it's slightly more complicated and depends on having a spare good battery.

It is not all that you can do to revive the old dead battery. How about checking the density of the electrolite after filling the distiled water to the cells? Density should be 1,29 +-0,01 g/cm^3. Density could be checked by an aerometer. If battery is dead the density is close to 1g/cm^3. Battery have to be charged with the voltage 2,7-2,8V/cell until density will stop to rise. But if the density of the electrolite is close to 1g/cm^3 the battery will not take the charge. So you have to add a sulphuric acid (H2SO4) to electrolite to rise the density to around 1,15g/cm^3 for battery to take charge. Then the battery has to be charged with the voltage 2,7-2,8V/cell until density will stop to rise. Also it is very important to check that the density woul not rise more than the normal 1,30g/cm^3 for a long period of time. If it rises, you can suck some electrolite out of the battery and add the distilled water to lower the density. At the end you have to get:
    1. Charging with the voltage 2,7-2,8V/cell no longer rises the density of elecrolite.
    2. Density of electrolite is equal on all cells to 1,29 +-0,01 g/cm^3.
    3. Charged battery at steady state shoul show the voltage around 2,26V/cell.
After reviving the battery it can be charged with the „normal” automatic smart (dumb) charger.
Concerning Smart (Dumb) chargers. It is not very difficult to make some changes to it, to make a switch auto/manual. Than in manual state it just puts out the voltage as a power sourse.

Yes they do, or you wouldn't be able to purchase battery refill packs of electrolytes.
      Its only acid and water.

The voltage drops because it can't hold a large charge with just water and no electrolytes, this is why you desulphate or re-electrolyte the cells.

OC. It worked like a charm. Once I got to the cell openings and started to inject the distilled water, I realized just how "thirsty" they were. Note to all: use the syringe. If you don't, it will take a long time to fill the cells because you will be constantly waiting for air bubbles to burp. I attached a wall wart with 14 volts, 800mAmps. At first (I put it through an ammeter) there was very little (current) draw. Then it picked up. It was a few hours but my battery was not used a lot, just old. It really took off and got to the point where my (not so smart) battery charger started to give the yellow LED. (Fast charge). Power Sonic wall wart style. I am letting it "rest". I am confident it will come back full force within a day. Thank You for your video.

I play bass on the street and used YUASA 12v SLA batteries for years. Use to be (back in 2001-2003) at Maplins would cost 25 quid brand new. However, behind the Preston Road branch in Brighton there is a scrap yard. Now they had a massive collection of old SLA batteries that were used as backup power for fire and security alarms (like for banks) that were still perfect and sold for 50p. It was stipulated in the insurance that they had to be replaced every 5 years even if they were never used. This was great, I didn't even need to buy a charger. I used them to power a 25 watt car amp, had a guitar fx (Zoom GFX 707) as a pre-amp and just a speaker box. The Zoom pedal runs on 4 AAs. Thanks for the vid, never thought of opening one, I thought there might be some very dangerous caustic crap in there. Anyway, try a scrap yard if your looking for a simpler solution.

Well this all depends on the condition of the the battery plates. If the battery was well used, you can bet the plates are partially eaten away from the sulfide and will NOT take a full charge. I have only been successful with about 5% of the batteries I tried this with. If you apply to much amperage to the small batteries, you will blow the caps right off these.

I used this along with another tutorial about how to accessing the battery. On adding distilled water in the cells (didn't really need it - caps were vacuum sucked downward, though I add a few drops) and jump start a battery (wound up not needing it) that wouldn't charge / play. I was surprised when I took a voltage reading and it was at 11.8 (12 V is the rating). So I reconnected everything without charging it. Come to find out, it played on battery mode (had been cutting off after about 5-10 seconds. Did disconnecting it reset something? Perhaps that was all it needed! Thanks everyone!

    Hello need help asap
So i was able to revive one of my 2 SLA battery (12v 150ah). The other has a problem because one of the 6 cells inside is reading 0.2v but the other 5 reads 2.1v. It wont continue charging because the other cells already reached max voltage.
    How do i fix this?

Don’t use distilled water. Throw out the whole thing and replace with sulphuric acid. It’s cheap and battery places sell em.
I had a motorcycle battery that couldn’t hold a charge above 6volts, and would lose it under load quite easily. I replaced cells with water and it did up to 7.
But It wasn’t enough to start the generator so I said fuck it. I just safely got rid of the liquid inside and put in the diluted battery electrolyte that has like 13% acid.
I didn’t even charge it after completing, and I checked it’s volts and got easily 10 volts under load. Later on I’m gonna slow charge it back up with the car battery charger.
Then run the generator and see how well it all goes.
Please note, don’t mess with acids and pretty much anything you don’t understand. Use safety glasses and rubber or plastic gloves. Work outside on a stably level surface. Use a syringe without the needle when pouring. It make it easier to prevent mishaps. Using a funnel is honestly not really good.
Also, if the acid gets on your skin and burns, neutralise it with Baking soda or baking power mixed with a little of water to make it a little more loosely than a paste.
    Stay safe.

A dead battery can't be fix, you can only recharge a discharged battery. If it needs water that means you overcharge it and boiled the water off. The lead flakes off and shorts out the cell, if you get it working it won't last. That's why there is a limited warranty.

You commented about "always connect the +ve first then the -ve. " This is often spread around, but no one explains the reasoning, so I will.
The relevance is a function of what you are connecting to and which side of the battery is connected to earth. Vehicles with generators were generally +ve earth, -ve hot, while vehicles with alternators are generally opposite, -ve earth and +ve hot.
The general notion is to connect the terminal and lead that should be hot first, then connect the terminal and lead that should be earth last, that way, if your wrench should touch anything earthed as you fasten the hot terminal, you will not create an arc and potentially spark a hydrogen explosion if the battery has gassed during charging. Once that is secure, and the earth is connected, it does not matter if the wrench touches the chassis while fastening the terminal as both are at earth potential and no arc will occur.
So for a +ve earth system, connect -ve first then +ve.
For a -ve earth system, connect +ve first then -ve.
For what you are doing on the bench, everything is floating (not earthed) so it does not matter what sequence you connect up.

Slow charging on low amps will build them back up, you need on of the old style chargers, the updated chargers are smart chargers.
Old fashioned chargers just give raw power without the stupid/smart microchips built into them.
Slow charge with low power, then if you can get some power into them, discharge it by using the power again maybe 2 wires and a bulb until power is used, then recharge at slightly higher power, and do this multiple times.
The trick is trying to get it to charge again in the first place, but it's absolutely possible, just not with a smart charger, look out for people having a garage clearance and get your hands on a 1980's motorbike/car battery charger.

Thanks for the helpful video! I am in the process of trying this in hopes to revive my daughters 24v powerwheel. When filling the dry cells back up with water, are you supposed to top them off? I had the battery on charge for nearly 3 hrs after adding water and when i checked it, 2 of the rubber caps had popped off. At this point i took it off charge to check the voltage and add more water. A few of the cells did need another "drink":) my voltage went from 1.9v to 11.6v in the 3 hrs charge, i was just worried about the rubber caps popping off

    • @oraclescave
      @oraclescave  5 років тому +6

The rubber caps are recommended to be off while charging, because gas bubbles are formed, I leave them on and experience them popping off too.
Fully charged battery will be over 12 volts, like 13.3 volts.
The battery might drink some water and need more once it is left to cool for a while.

Much simpler to connect the stupid smart charger and just apply power to the battery for a second or two to trick the stupid smart charger into starting to charge. Works for most but not all stupid smart chargers (some lock themselves off once full voltage is detected and can't trickle charge). Always fix water level first, that is often all that's needed. Avoiding buying stupid smart chargers is hard, but if you refuse to buy chargers that have reverse polarity protection you can find an automatic charger if you look long enough. I have a pile of worthless stupid smart chargers and got stubborn and found an automatic charger I can simply put on a battery and eventually even a stone dead battery will charge (a manual charger will burn up the battery, you can NOT do that with a manual charger). Expect to search for a LONG time to find a useful charger.

A trick with that smart charger not to keep connecting jumper pack is as follow as I did. Get any 12v power supply example pc psu or even a normal 10v to 14v transformer (AMPS DOES NOT MATTER)) r a electronic device transformer will work. Connect the 12v transformer and your smart charger- set smart charger at 2amps so you Have a safety amp max draw. Start your smart charger - It will detect 12v and start charging. Your 12v transformers amps does not matter as the smart charger will supply the amps as needed.
The trick is also connect a 12v pc power supply fan.
The fan will draw only small amps say 0.2amp. There after you can disconnect your temp 12v power source. Smart charger will then supply the 14 volts. As your smart charger has a 0.2amp draw the hole time due to the fan load, you will fool it as it is thinking its the battery is drawing it. You can then leave it for days. You will then also see amp draw increase on smart charger - Because you know 0.2 amp was draw at first. and it is the 12v load fan- any thing above you know is your battery drawing amps. (NO NEED THEN TO KEEP CONNECTING A the JUMPING SOURCE AS YOUR SMART CHARGER WILL KEEP PUSHING VOLTS IN AS THE FAN IS FOOLING IT WITH THE SMALL LOAD))
You can also maybe set smart charger to 7 cell 16 volts if it reconice it with the 12v jump. - 16volts for a while may de sulfate and volts boost it, if you cant get any amp draw after days with 12v charge - On 16Volts keep monetering battery for heat say every 30min , there after drop to 12v charge as above then only leave alone for long period. Helped me with a big 12v 27MAH as it did not want to pull amp for a while. there after 12v charge
Also with a battery I pulled some acid water from my car's battery - very small amount - added about 2mill per cell with rest normal battery water - iit also assisted with a battery to get it going witch struggled.

I'm not sure I think it might need a VOLTAGE RECTIFIER.
      Some mini bikes have them.
I don't think its possible to wire it just to a magneto, a magneto would probably produce between 6v-12v, a mini bike is probably 5-6v magneto but straight wired I think might be dangerous.

Way back in the olden days in the US,older gents would have a very strong battery charger and would literally do routine maintenance on their own batteries by topping them off with distilled water and then heating the battery up to bake off or loosen the accumulated bad stuff from the plates taking care not to fry the plates lead or solder joints and they could literally use the same battery for 10 years or more.. Nowadays all manufacturers want people to simpky replace their used batteries with brand new and "charge" them a disposal fee for taking in the old "dead" batteries which usually wind up being recycled by installing the internals into new cases refilling with fresh acid and charging them again and reselling them as new or remanned and making profit again and again and again... They do NOT want consumers getting a decade or more usage off a single battery sale when they can and often do get them as many as 3-4 times during 10 years... Unless a battery develops a dead short in 1 cell then it is always renewable as you've just proven and an acid pack from the local auto parts house will often renew 2-3-4 batteries if used to top off a good battery rather than water which in fact dilutes the remaining acid..

I am trying to revive two of these 12v 8aH batteries from an old uninterruptible power supply. I added distilled water just to the top of the plates, then wired the two batteries in parallel with a spare car battery that is sitting on a trickle charger. After 24 hours one battery is 3.5 volts and the second battery is 5.5 volts. Both started at basically ~0 volts. What are the odds the two batteries recover? I made sure to check they still had water. I know it's only been 24 hours. I am under the impression it could take a whole week. I am unsure how long they sat dead before I started trying to revive them.
