    Wondering why your Power Wheels battery isn’t charging? First, you’ll need to figure out if the charger or the battery itself is the problem. In this video we go over how to test both.
    What you’ll need:
    A volt meter (these can be found at your local hardware store for $10-15)
    Power Wheels battery
    Power Wheels charger
    2 paperclips if you are testing the red Power Wheels battery
    Testing the Charger Output:
    Switch the volt meter to the 20 DC side.
    Touch the electrodes to the Power Wheels battery charger (negative to negative, positive to positive)
    You’ll always want the voltage to be higher than the battery. For example, for a 6v battery the voltage should be 7+. For a 12v Power Wheels battery, the voltage should be above 13.5
    Anything less than these voltages will not be able to charge your battery
    Note: This test will not work on the Power Wheels quick charger, stay tuned for a separate video
    Testing the Battery:
    This test is similar to how you checked the Power Wheels charger. Place the electrodes against the battery (negative to negative, positive to positive)
    If your battery is below a certain threshold, the charger will not work
    The 12v battery should be at 10.5v+ and the 6v battery should be over 5v. Any lower and you’ll need to replace the battery
    Note: Testing the red Power Wheels battery is a little trickier because the electrodes won’t fit into the slots. You’ll want to first insert paperclips, and then hold the electrodes beside them against the battery

    *This battery reconditioning program exceeded my presumptions. It worked on any drill battery, several AA and AAA batteries, **batery.repair** and any camera battery. The steps are simple and the act itself is exciting to do. No matter what type of battery you`ve got, it is sure to function again!*

    Is there a percentage rule for batteris for being dead and fully changed? For example a 6 volt battery that is 10 percent below 6 is a dead battery?

    • @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc
      @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc  11 місяців тому +1

      The voltage range of a battery can vary depending on the type of battery, its age, and its condition. As a general rule of thumb, a battery is considered to be dead when its voltage drops below 80% of its fully charged voltage. In the case of a 6V battery you would be in the low 5V range to be considered dead.

    I have a 6V power wheels and the battery reads out 6.55V after charge. Charger is also putting out proper voltage. I plugged it in and checked connections. As far as i can tell, all switches are working. I even replaced the pedal switch with a new one. I hooked the battery up directly to the motors and they dont spin. As a final test, I plugged in a 12V battery through all of the cars wiring and everything seemed to work. Is it possible that the motors are old and the 6.55V just isn't enough to move them anymore?

    • @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc
      @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc  Рік тому

      Unfortunately I don't have sufficient knowledge on how age affects electric motors and if a higher and higher voltage is necessary. Our electric fork lift is over 30 years old with several thousand hours on the machine and the battery voltage (and motors) remain the same with no issues. Does the vehicle take a single 6V battery or two? If you have more than one motor in there then I'm assuming it's a dual battery setup which means your motors might need 12V to run?

    I picked up one of these out of the local Goodwill rubbish pile and figured I'd use it for something. Thing was severely undercharged at 4V. Threw it on a trickle charger and it seems to be charging. Has anyone taken one of these apart yet? Most Lead Acid batteries I've handled swish and slosh. This one is pretty solid.

    Do the 12v batteries have any sort of internal protection or safety devices that trigger in a collision? My child hit our out door table and the PW immediately stopped working. Battery is at full charge but still won't go. Swapped another working battery and the PW goes fine. Thoughts?

    • @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc

    Did you make the video for the quick charger testing ?

    • @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc
      @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc  7 років тому +2

      You can not test a quick charger using the above method. The charger itself will not put out any voltage until it makes a solid connection with a battery. The only way to test the charger is to use a power wheels battery that you know is good. You test the voltage of the battery and write it down. Once you have your first reading you would then plug in the quick charger and let it sit connected for 10 minutes. After that time has passes you remove it from the battery and test the voltage of the battery - if its above the number you had previously written down then its working. If you can give me an idea of the problem your having with the charger then I can do my best to answer it.

    I got a free power wheels toy and knew it needed a new 12v battery. Bought the new battery and the car drove great for an hour. Went to charge the battery and now the car won't drive for more then 30 seconds even after a 24 hour charge. I assumed the charger is dead which I verified using your strategy. However the battery is reading 5.5 volts which according to your video means the battery is in need of replacing. Is that possible? It's a brand new 12v battery. Just wanting to verify that if the readings are that low it means the battery is bad and not just in need of a charge. Thanks!

    • @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc
      @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc  7 років тому +1

      Since the battery is brand new and used only once or twice then there is a very good chance that it will bounce back from 5.5 volts, but you need to get a new charger ASAP. The longer the battery sits in this extreme discharged state the harder it will be to bring it back.

    • @nathanbantle4770
      @nathanbantle4770 7 років тому +1

      Thanks. It took some messing around but I got it back up to 11.93v. I had to cut my charger cables and connected it to my car battery charger first (charger wouldn't read it like you said). That bumped it up to about 10.5 volts. I then re connect my wires to the actual charger and did a single charge which brought it back up to 11.20. Sat it for a couple days and charged it again resulting in a 11.93 charge. Seems like it should be fine although it's not charging as strong as your battery but maybe it will recover more after a few new charges. Thanks for the help.

    My new 12v battery shows .04 and my old 12v charger is jumping around between 5-17. I assume this means they are both bad? If so, do you think my charger possibly ruined my new battery or did I possibly charge it too long? It worked fine until I tried to charge it for the first time.

      Thats an extremely low voltage to be seeing on the new battery. The Power Wheels toy itself will not drain the battery past 10.5V maximum which leads me to believe that you may have an issue with that charger. Have you gotten a volt meter on the charger yet to see what its putting out?

    Anyway to charge the battery with a car charger to give it enough volts to charger on the power wheel charger?

    • @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc
      @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc  3 роки тому

      Yes, but two things to note. 1. You don't want to blast the battery with anything higher than 10 amps, anything higher and you run the risk of blowing the top off the battery. 2. The connection prongs in the battery make it really tough to hook battery clamps to. If you do rig up a good way to make a solid connect with a larger charger then hit it at ~10 amps for 45 to 60 minutes and then try plugging in the standard charger immediately after to see if you can recover it.

    • @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc
      @HighTechBatterySolutionsInc  2 роки тому

      while testing the voltage at the motors hit the gas peddle to engage the motors - check for a massive voltage drop, if you do then a dead cell in the battery is a definite possibility. If there is no change in voltage - i.e. your getting voltage to the motors but no drop when you activate the motors then something could be happening with the motors.

      If the battery is 13 years old then is going to be time to replace it - the typical lifespan on these is 3 to 5 years. One quick way to tell if an old battery is bad is to physically shake it. If you can hear debris shifting around within the battery that means the lead plates have disintegrated and/or fallen apart.

      Do you have access to a voltage meter? If so the best thing to do would be to check the voltage on the battery to see if it took a charge. Fully charged for this battery would be 12.8 + volts. If the battery is testing fully charged then issue is somewhere in the toy itself. If the battery is stone cold dead then there are options depending on the voltage reading that you get.

      There will be a draw (voltage drop) when the toy is pulling power from the battery, however, after the initial draw the battery should maintain its voltage level for a bit before slowly inching downward. If your battery drops significantly - into the 10-volt range - and doesn't stop its decline then its time to take a look at a new battery.

      @richardprice9564 5 років тому +1

      Yes, if you leave the battery on charge for days on end then overcharging will occur. Unfortunately, it sounds like your battery needs to be replaced. Your battery is able to retain proper voltage to operate a small draw like the radio but as soon as a real load is applied it fails outright. I am pretty confident your issue is limited to the battery because the radio also dies when you hit the pedal - if it remained on then you may have a fuse or switch issue with the pedal itself.

      That sounds like the batteries are okay and should at least move the power wheels. I would try lifting up the back of the toy so there is no pressure on the wheels and hitting the accelerator. If you still don't get anything then you most likely have an issue with a switch.

      If you know that the battery is good but the toy is not moving at all then you may have a bad switch - most likely under the 'gas' pedal of the toy. You can either test the switch with a multimeter or give power wheels customer service a call - they have repair centers all over the US that you can drop the toy off for repairs.

      The charger is probably good. It is not uncommon for us to test a 12V Power Wheels charger and see it putting out 11 ish volts. As soon as the charger is connected to a battery it will increase its voltage output into the 13-14V range.

      We have not made a quick charger video because it is a bit tricky to test those units. What issue are you having with the charger - I may be able to help trouble shoot it for you.

      We do not, the charger for both the Red 6V and the Grey 12V units are going to be in 1 AMP range. You can divide the capacity (AH) of the battery by 1 (1 AMP) to determine your charge time assuming the battery has been run all the way down. For example, the Red 6V Power Wheels Battery is rated at 9.5AH and the charger has an output of 1 AMP so 9.5/1 = 9.5 hours of charge time. I hope this helps!
