    Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" album was huge back in 1979 when I was in eighth grade. The singles from that album, "The Logical Song", "Breakfast in America", "Goodbye Stranger", and "Take the Long Way Home", were all over the radio that year. The audio quality was top notch back then too. The album won a Grammy for Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording. And looking at that album cover now, the presence of the World Trade Center behind that coca-cola glass full of orange juice really stands out as a piece of history. Supertramp broke through in the US with their third album, "Crime of the Century", which featured the FM rock radio staples, "School", "Bloody Well Right", and "Dreamer", followed by the uplifting single "Give a Little Bit" from from their album prior to "Breakfast in America". So one could say that we were ready for more music from them when they released that album. "Goodbye Stranger" is an easy song to get lost in the sauce with. Many of their songs are that way. I think you'll like the ones I mentioned a lot too.

      Look real close at the cover artwork, and you'll see its made from salt and pepper shakers, spoons, cardboard cereal boxes, coffee percolators, common breakfast items, and is very cleverly executed to look like New York. Thats the beauty of artwork before computers were used.

    Hearing when this was released makes me feel really old. I remember when the record came out. I got it the very next day. I've got all their albums, they are all fantastic. They are true instrumentalists and singers. I don't know of many bands that were as good as these, some of their songs like "In the quietest moments" remind me of Pink Floyd. "Dreamer" was the first single. I absolutely love "Fools Overture".

    • @franksfiddle9031
      @franksfiddle9031 Рік тому

      Fools Overture was unexpectedly fantastic ... when I first heard it I thought it was some filler or outro type of thing, couldn't work out whether I was liking it .. then there was Churchill and still no song and after 5 and a half minutes 'History recalls ...' and I was all in. What a song that is.
      Dreamer was on the Juke Box and the first song I heard in the NAAFI at HMS Ganges as a new freshly shorn sailor and Quietest Moments is spectaclar also ... I also felt a little old, but extremely privileged that I was there when such fantastic music was being created.
      And yes, I am now listening to Fools Overture 😁

    you don't have to worry since 1979 when I listen to supertramp I always feel this musical richness, this variety of sound these breaks in rhythm. The richness of this group like many of these 70s and 80s being the musicality. So when I see in Your Eyes this flame I understand, I don't look at myself in the mirror but for more than 40 years I must have been memes listening to this Group.

    I was stumbling through my troubled teenage years when Supertramp broke into the mainstream, with their 'Crime of The Century' and 'Breakfast in America' albums. They quickly became my favourite group, and I bought all their previous albums as well.
    Their music pulled me through some rough emotional times and I am forever indebted to them -- especially Roger Hodgson (he had a naturally high voice then, and didn't sing in falsetto!). Roger also had some great solo albums/music after Supertramp broke up.
    Yes, the sound quality (and sound layers) was exceptional even on the original vinyl records! The song 'Goodbye Stranger' was my motivational theme music when making a major solo move across the country at the age of 19. It was great to relive the adventure, emotions, and the first time I heard that song, while watching your reaction!

      I had the 8-track as well! Sure didn't like the way the songs were brutally mangled midway through track head changes though! I also have most of the very expensive (at the time) Supertramp half-speed master-pressed albums. They were only carefully played once on my quality turntable, back in the day, and that was to record a cassette tape -- with metal Dolby don't you know?! Then of course acquired all the remastered CDs as time marched on. Am tempted now and then to listen to the quality vinyl, but don't want to risk damage to the mint condition near-virgin records!

This song seems to about giving the devil no place. Being blessed coming in and going out. Not getting drug down by others; but wishing them well. Staying light hearted and greeting others and life itself with warmth and a smile. It's as if this song itself picked your bible quote for the day. His way of saying "get behind me satan" was I don't pay no heed when others say the devil is my savior. Good bye stranger, it's been nice. Hope you find your paradise.

      The beauty of music is that lyrics can be interpreted by the listener to mesh with their personal narrative; however, you may be real surprised to learn what that song was REALLY written about (I was)! I had my own interpretation as well for many years, until I read separate interviews with Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson where the genesis and meaning/intent of most of the popular Supertramp songs were discussed and revealed. I don't want to be the one to burst your bubble, so you can do your own searches if interested...

    Hi, Mo. This was one of the songs my mates and I would listen to around a campfire on the beach (with a few beers thrown in). It seems like another lifetime ago. Loved your reaction, as always. Thanks for sharing 👍🏽 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

    Roger Hodgson is absolutely magical on keyboards, jazz and classical mix into rock.

    Hi, Mo, good to have you back again! Great to hear you reviewing some of the old bands I loved back in the seventies. And speaking of the seventies, I'd like to recommend that you try Santana and their song Heads, Hands and Feet/Soul Sacrifice from the Moonflower album. The guitar is fantastic, but the drumming will blow your mind!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
