"Child of Vision" is a MUST!!
"Crisis? What Crisis?" is an underrated album by Supertramp.
I love that album!
I love that album too! ❤
I agree, is great album, not as good as Breakfast in America in my opiniom, but still a great album
Yep. Extremely underrated!
It’s rated very high actually. Wake up
“Fool’s Overture” Just Do It. Saw them in concert only once. Outstanding musicianship. Each member is the real deal and the productions are top notch. And that horn/woodwind player. YEAH! The best.
Agree !!
Agree completely. Fools Overture!! From the Even in the Quietest Moments album. Terrific song.
I believe his name is John Helliwell (?), fantastic saxophonist throughout the long, illustrious career of Supertramp’s great music.
Good call.
I saw them 3 times, twice before Roger left and once after. I preferred the group with Roger in it. Loved Fool’s Overture, loved playing it on piano. (Now I can’t remember how it goes).
This album is so good it's insane. If you didn't own a copy in '79 you were not with it at all!
Guess I wasn't with it then. The ONLY song I really liked by them was Bloody Well Right, and that was INSANELY good !!!
bought it that year at 13!
I remember the first time I heard this album, over at a friends house getting ready to go out on a double date. This album was playing and I was floored. Still my all time favorite album! I have a signed copy from Roger Hodgson that I got a few years back. Love this album so much.
If you don’t own a copy in 2024 you are not with it at all.
@@excronoI spent two years looking for a copy at many spots (I live in Austin TX so record stores are not hard to come by) and had to settle for a 2011 picture disc, they said it was the first they’ve gotten of that LP in months and I didn’t see another one til recently
Now you’re into my music world. Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Toto….these are the songs of my life.
Consider yourself blessed to have a wife who loves SUPERTRAMP
I am!!!!
Always loved “I’m in this dumb motel, near the Taco Bell, without a hope in hell, I can’t believe that I’m still around”. What a desperate scene they painted!
Many of us are right there with him at this very moment.
"Hide in Your Shell" is one of my favorites.
“Just another nervous wreck” another goodie
Hi guys! "Fools Overture" is an epic masterpiece from this band. From the album "Even in the Quietest Moments." Glad to see you do Supertramp. This would be considered a deep cut, but it may have been released as the "B" side of a single. I always like how Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson traded off on their vocals on their albums.
Classic 👍
What they said.
Yep, "Fools Overture" is a great song
And John Helliwell (woodwinds, keyboards) also sings the high harmonies.
I came here to say this, but I knew in my heart it'd already been said. :D
Brother Where You Bound is a 15 minute tour de force featuring a rare guitar solo from David Gilmour(1985)
OMG! I didn't know this! Gotta give it a listen
Breakfast in America was a “massive” , as the Brits like to say, hit in its day. I like Take The Long Way Home.
Another deep cut hidden gem off the same lp is Oh Lord, Is it Mine. Short, but very very powerful!
Thanks, we would gladly adopt Supertramp 🇨🇦 , but no they are from England. I do think that my home town of Winnipeg and Montreal can take credit for breaking them in North America. The album Crime of the Century, owned Winnipeg the year it came out, shout out to the UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA FM radio station.
Everyone had Crime OTC, and Even ITQM back then in Winnipeg!
If you get the meaning of “Crime of the Century”, it’s a subversive album for 2024, sometimes art is created to speak directly to the future not the present.
Play , Another Nerves Wreak it's another deep cut from the same album. It's my favorite song by this band.
Supertramp are the kind of band that if you only know and listen to the hits, you're missing out on so much other great music. Try Even in the Quietest Moments, title track from the same named album.
A left field suggestion would be a song called Profondo Rosso by an Italian prog band called Goblin, probably best known for their soundtrack work for iconic 70 's Italian horror movies.
"Even in the Quietest Moments" is a great, hit song that's not on their greatest hits album; however, their song "Fool's Overture" is one of their best and a great Prog song. You'll love it. And yes, they do have two singers. ❤🎹🎤
I think we'd get an emotional reaction with Even In The Quietest Moments... both for the music and lyrics ;-)
The entire album is fantastic!
This album brings back SO many memories! One of my favorite tracks!
I saw Supertramp Live in May 1979 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia Pa. One of the best concerts ever !!!
Supertramp is one of my favorite bands. They were so talented, and Roger Hodgson's voice only seems to get better with age. This is actually my favorite song by them, and one of my all time favorite songs by anybody, and I love Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Toto, Phil Collins, Journey, Boston, Foreigner, and many other bands. This song has a special meaning to me, that nobody else would understand, but that is OK, it is only for me.
This was perhaps the best album of 1979. Punk was running rampant, and then this sophisticated shiny production came out. They shot to the top, released a respectable live album, and were never quite the same afterwards.
Supertramp. Back when stereo speakers were these huge flat things and we had turntables that played something called a record!! Breakfast in America was in a class by itself. Every song was awesome.
Played the heck out of this album in high school back in the day
There isnt much more I enjoy than watching young people enjoying the music of my youth after 40 years!
I heard alot of supertramp growing up but I never heard this song before it's cool thanks guys
They did an album after Roger Hodgson left the band called "Brother, Where You Bound". The title song & "Cannonball" are great songs I know you will like a lot!
They did several albums after Roger.left. Ironically, David Gilmour contributed his usual mesmerizing guitar to Brother Where You Bound...
@@oakhillfound847 i know they did several. Its just that "Brother, Where You Bound?" is the only really good one to me.
Cannonball is the shit! Crank it up, drop the top and floor it!
@@robertheckman8013 I think "Some Things Never Change" is a great album too. More jazzy but lots of great songs such as "Listen To Me Please" or the hauntingly prescient title track. And even on their final album "Slow Motion" there is, among a couple of average tracks, a masterpiece like "Tenth Avenue Breakdown".
About the album cover:
The waitress represents the statue of liberty, the skyline in the background is made up of milk cartons, stacked coffee cups, salt and pepper shakers, and other things you would find on a breakfast table.
I always loved the kind of tongue in cheek humor of the whole scene 😀
I always had this album on my iPod and never noticed that until I got the LP! Super cool cover.
In a freaky coincidence, if you hold up the album cover to a mirror it says 911 above the World Trade Center 🤔
The cover won a Grammy..
You are correct Ronnie.
My brother and I figured out the album cover under the influence of a mega dose of LSD 1 evening during the first week of April 1979, a week after the albums release.
I remember that evenings tripping very fondly with my brother and also thinking how much of a revelation that was figuring out that cover all on our own.
Then again, the acid was soooo good back then, we probably could have magically figured out the complexity of the Beatles White album too.
@@alrivers2297 the album prior to this was called ‘crime of the century’ check out the lyrics to the title track opener of that album.
“Just another Nervous Wreck” is a great song off same blockbuster Breakfast in America album. Dark and disturbing but brilliant masterpiece by keyboard virtuoso Rick Davies.
One of their more hard-hitting songs. Rick hit the apex of that with "Brother Where You Bound"
It is my favourite Supertramp song ( Just another nervous wreck on ) For me it is not " dark " at all, it is melodic rock , but the one of the best melodic rock song
@@balazsernhaft8337 It certainly was overlooked by many on this classic album. It’s my favorite too. By “dark” I meant lyrics-wise. Many of Rick Davies songs had a melancholic or cynical view of life. What a brilliant musician.
@@chuckhutton5087 " Lyrics-wise " . OK . I understand . I have found on the ST fan page some remarks about this song that " it is heavy-metal song " or too heavy-song ?! To be honest I did not understand what they are talking about . Maybe that was the reason of my misunderstanding : -) . It is very underrated song , most of the fans prefers only the easy-listening , catchy pop-songs .
I worked in our school radio station when this came out. I was in first period, got this in my box, cracked open the cellophane and put side one on the turntable. I only stopped it to turn the record over. I have never before or since had EVERY SINGLE SONG on an entire album hit me as had as BREAKFAST IN AMERICA! Been collecting every thing they did and every solo project since!
Simply Great stuff from the Great Supertramp guys ☝️❤️ thanks fir the reaction ❤️☝️
Supertramp is British, not Canadian( except drummer Bob Siebenberg, who's from LA)...
Two vocalists, the higher octave singer is Roger Hodgson, the lower octave singer is Rick Davies
Supertramp has four masterpiece albums:
Crime of the Century
Crisis? What Crisis?
Even In the Quietest Moments
Breakfast in America
Two very good albums:
Famous Last Words
Brother Where You Bound
Maybe 3 or 4 mediocre tunes, the rest very good to masterpiece
To answer the last question posed by the commentators....Supertramp hasn't performed since the early 2010s....due to Rick Davies having health problems. Roger Hodgson left Supertramp in 1983 for a solo career, and there was no reunion, due to a longtime feud ( too lengthy an explanation as to why)between Hodgson and Davies.
I absolutely concur with this comment.
The feud is actually between their wives. They did talk about a reunion at one point but couldn't overcome their wives hating each other. Rick's wife was managing the band at the time and apparently, Roger's wife wasn't happy about that.
I thought there was also some creative differences, like Styx, Roger Hodgson wanted to be more theatrical and the rest of the group wanted to rock out more.
@@ptrlxc you're not wrong...Davies and the rest of the band wanted more prog/ jazz-rock fusion, Hodgson didn't
@@Narpets2112 And now she's Roger's ex wife.
Cannonball-Supertramp-----have I ever steered you wrong yet?? haha !!
I saw Roger Hodgson in concert a couple of years ago, at the Royal Albert Hall, doing all the Supertramp hits. He's a brilliant performer and kept everyone entertained. I thought I knew Supertramp, but he played something I didn't know, 'Hide In Your Shell', and I thought it was the most beautiful song I'd ever heard. The song that got everyone up on their feet and singing was one no one ever reacts to, 'It's Raining Again'.
I hope he knows how much his music is appreciated by a younger set of listeners, via reaction channels.
But . . . how can I put this? Canada?????? 😲😲
i was 7 years old in 1979 when my sister bought this album. i was captivated by it. i was drawn to music at a very early age.
Okay! Ain’t Nobody but Me , is an excellent song!
I saw them live in Calgary, Alberta in1979 during their Breakfast in America tour. A great concert on a warm summer evening.
Gone Hollywood is fantastic, too!
Every cut a shining jewel. 💎
I bought this album when it came out. I was around 14. I listened to it so many times, and I still have it. A classic for sure. I recommend Lord is it Mine and Child of Vision.
I remember driving from Florida to Maryland to my new Army Duty Station in 1979 and listening to Breakfast in America all the way up. Awesome band and awesome record 👍
Breakfast in America is a masterpiece, is also my favourite Supertramp album, so many great songs on that album
Just a big Supertramp fan here. The album Crime of the Century is for me the crown jewel... an album you listen to from start to end. Crisis what Crisis great as well but even better the album Even in the Quietest Moment. This album was for me the lightest album but enormous enjoyable. Then came two or three following albums all with beautiful songs on.
From Roger's first solo album In The Eye Of The Storm the last cut Only Because Of You is another masterpiece to check out.
I think those songs would have sounded much better as finished Supertramp productions. That is if they received a passing grade to be included. Supertramp had a lot of songs that they played live that weren't good enough to record.
Yup. If he recorded those songs with the band they would’ve been overwhelmingly massive hits!
You started in the right place. First song off one of the best albums ever recorded. Go track by track now. Trust me. This is the way. ✌️❤️
Gone Hollywood and Child Of Vision my two favorite songs from Supertramp
Always been a fan of Supertramp. Saw their Breakfast in America tour concert with Jean-Luc Pontie as the opening act at the Ottawa Landsdown Park for a hefty $12.00 CAD! Turned out to be the most beautiful summer evening with a light breeze for an outdoors concert. Tremendous show and the closest to the studio recording I've ever heard from a band live. Fantastic show from a fantastic band. You should listen to RUDY from the Crime of the Century album. Great piece of music.
It's the Statue of Liberty portrayed as a waitress, holding the juice glass, and a menu in her other arm. Great album, I bought it in 1979, when I was 14. Always love you guys and your reactions!
Yes, Nick caught that smooth transition from voice to sax....See now how clueless some people now look when they use the dismissive epithet of 'Dad Rock'? They have utterly no idea.... We just keep enjoying it! So rich, so beautiful....
You guys should lead the charge to get Supertramp in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
When this album came out in 1979, I wore out my cassette tape of it on a simple tape recorder at my Grandma's house .....I was 13
Your parents have very good taste. The band had 2 vocalists: Rick Davies, piano and harmonica player, low voice, and Roger Hodgson, guitar and keyboard player, high voice. And a phenomenal sax player: John Helliwell, who played also keyboards and miscellaneous percussion. The kitchen, as we say in Brazil (bass / drums) was played by Dougie Thomson and Bob C Benberg. Gone Hollywood is my favourite Supertramp song.
Love this reaction. Such a gift to share music you love with someone who loves you. So great. This album is one of my all-time favourites and I spent hours and hours both listening to and examining the lp from front to back. They are from the UK. As a good Canadian boy I'd love to be able to say they were from home but alas...
I've always loved this song. It's like Yes meets the Bee Gees in a crack lounge..
Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies are the two vocalists who alternate as lead vocalist in the band. Very unique for a band to have more than one lead vocalist. The trail out on this song is so awesome.
WHAT a band.
There was something in the water in Britain for 3 decades at least.
In my mind, our greatest gift to the world.
But not everywhere in Britain .... some people got the wrong water and created punk and more strange stuff in the 80s :-)
Breakfast had a 'lighter' feel than Crime of the Century and even Crisis. It had a variety of great melodic songs, one of their best albums that's for sure!
I always saw “Crime” and “Breakfast” as Supertramp’s “Abbey Road” and “Sgt Pepper”.
(And the Beatles comparison is no coincidence either. ☺️)
Hey Nick N Lex. Big Supertramp fan. Lex you picked a good one. Like this album very much. I figured he was going to like this. Keep up the good work. Steve
Roger Hodgson singing mainly the higher parts and playing guitar and keys.. Rick Davies mainly the lower grittier vocals and piano / keys ..
What an amazing band ..👍🏻☮❤
Don’t Leave Me Now. Great song to play along with your acoustic guitar.
Crazy that you've been so into this album for so long never having noticed that the skyline pictured behind the Waitress of Liberty is completely composed of diner items - plates, cups, saucers, salt/pepper shakers, silverware docks, etc. Breakfast in America, indeed. 😄
Just one of the best albums ever made.
There is not a single "pass over" song on that album! It's phenomenal.
The cover art won a Grammy..
New York as a breakfast table, replete with actress Kate Murtagh as the Statue of Liberty as a waitress, 'Libby' :-)
Hi, Supertramp have so many wonderful songs. Love their albums. From an album called "Famous Last Words", I always play the last two tracks together...."Waiting so long" & "Don't leave me now" the ending of which always makes me cry - It's not the words, which do plant the seed, so when the end piece comes, it's gets me every time [ & it's the album cover with the scissors cutting the wire ]....Then from the album "Crisis What Crisis" ? the first two tracks must be played as one track - "Easy Does It" & "Sister Moonshine". I think if I just write more tracks it will just drown out the one's I've mentioned. I would consider a double track as I have seen you do this before & these tracks do follow on each other on the records....It's Roger Hodgson on vocals - like on Dreamer ... & Rick Davis on vocals - like on Bloody Well Right.....both singing on Gone Hollywood. Brilliant track & album. Love this. The tracks I mentioned I play a lot, especially from Famous Last Words. Thankyou for another great reaction.....I'm now going to play those last two tracks from Famous Last Words and get my box of tissues ready. Lol
I would add C’est le bon to the last two.
I have a "promotional" copy of "Even in the quietest moments" and it seems to be better vinyl than regular vinyls, but the sound is incredible. Anything off that album would be my next step 😁❤️
Fool's overture is a gem for sure
@NicknLex Yay, Supertramp! Okay, a banger is Another Man’s Woman, from Crisis What Crisis (which is my fave, by them). You will probably notice that Rick Davies (lower voice, piano) writes songs with a heavy influence from American jazz and R&B, whereas Roger Hodgson wrote from a British folk/pop background and influence. The nice thing about Supertramp is this dichotomy, specifically. Here are some others: Rudy, Bloody Well Right and title track from Crime; Sister Moonshine and Another Man’s Woman (Crisis), the Title track and From Now On (Quietest Moments). Keep ‘em coming! Peace from Toronto!
Such a great fun album. Each song gets better than the last.
A superb album! Recorded in the village recorder in L.A !
“I’m in this dumb motel, near the Taco Bell, without a hope in hell, I can’t believe that I’m still around” GREAT LYRICS!!!! I’m such a SUPERTRAMP FAN!!!!!
I have this album on vinyl, love the sound coming from my turntable turned up loud
This brings me back to a dark time in my life. Maybe why I had a harrd time listening to this album for a lot of years.
Give us more Supertramp reactions! Thank you!
Man this is one of the first songs I can ever remember. I remember hearing the piano and being scared for some reason. Then the guitars hit and my brother and I would dance around the room like mad men. I can remember that so vividly with this song it's unreal.
I am so happy you all broke down this song! Such a good video!
Wow it’s awesome how music can transport you back to those moments. Thank you for sharing them with us and happy you enjoyed this! :) - Lex
Love supertramp such a great band , awesome music "crime of the century, crisis what crisis etc.
I think this is my favourite from this album. Supertramp were way ahead of their time
Wow, Nick. You were missing out on their best album. I have to sing along too, Lex
The live in Paris album is killer!
I want to add my support to you two reacting to 'Fools Overture'. I think that you'll both love it and have a blast...a field day...talking about it!
On a personal level I find it amusing that this album by a British band really captured a feeling of Americana in this time period. I’m British and my parents used to play this album all the time when I was a kid. We moved to the States in the late 90s in my teens and I still closely associate this album with a ‘feeling’ of America. Whenever I listen to this I’m taken to a place in my head, driving on the highway through strip malls at night past diners and motels. It’s weird to have a sense of a place before you’ve actually been there, like a dreamworld becoming reality. It may also simply be the ubiquity of American culture in Britain when I was growing up.
The live album called.. Paris.. It's got all the songs and it's incredible!!
Title song is catchy as well. My favorite line is "Can we have kippers for breakfast, Mummy dear, Mummy dear?"
You guys actually get it! Wow 👌. The end of this song 🎵 😢 😍
Over the years this has become one of my favorite Supertramp tracks! Even in the Quietest Moments is quite FANTASTIC!
Great son guys! Never heard it before! Thanks for sharing!
N&L, highly recommend their "Goodbye Stranger" and "Take The Long Way Home" and " Give A Little Bit"
Hide In Your Shell, Also Rodger Hodgson is the main composer and voice, check out his solo work Eye Of The Storm
Supertramp was an excellent band! A top 5 for me! Crime of the Century is probably a top 2 or 3 album of all time for me! Perfect record that stands next to Dark Side of the Moon for me
Agreed on Crime of the Century, definitely in my top 5! - Lex
I haven't heard this song in 25 years but I instantly knew it. That's how great songs are, you never forget them.
I have seen both Supertramp live in concert, and Pink Floyd live in concert. I think that I might have been part of a small group of people who thought that hearing Supertramp was very similar to Pink Floyd. Good call Nick.
Yes!!! SUPERTRAMP! Awesome band!
You need to do "Brother WhereYou Bound"...
Actually, just pick an album, close your eyes, and point a finger... any song will do!
All the Best!
ALinCAL
Nick & Lex, please do "Fool's Overture" , you'll both love it. "Bloody Well Right" is great, too.
Their live album Paris is a great showcase of their talents.
What game changer for me personally. Purchased this album after hearing the “A list” songs on the Radio as most did... put the needle down on this first track and was gob smacked, as they say. Perfect album. “Oh Darling” is another I think you guys would enjoy!
Love this album , they're English btw 👍🏻☮❤
4 of the 5 are British, drummer Bob Siebenberg is from LA
@@michaelbaucom4019 Yeah , i was referring to Nick saying they were Canadian like Rush ..but yes they were formed in London either way they were amazing live . I only got to see them without Roger Hodgson but they were still brilliant .👍🏻☮❤
I think the 'they're Canadian' comes from their early years when apparently they got promotion/funding from a Canadian impressario which helped their career taking off.
@@murdockreviews He was Dutch not Canadian .Sam August Miesegaes
@@marcushull12 oh, thanks for the information.
I had not listened to Supertramp since 1979 when I bought this LP. At that time I only listened to the pop hits(my young unexploring mind) I came across this cut about 2 years ago and now I have been totally immersed from Crime to Even In the quietest and of course the non-hits on Breakfast as well as Crisis. The 4 LP trifecta, not many bands pulled this off.
If you guys aren’t familiar with the band Jellyfish, I HIGHLY recommend you check them out. They only made two albums but both are amazing. They’re reminiscent of Supertramp and Queen mostly. I’d go with New Mistake to begin with. I’ve hooked many friends with that one.
Supertramp is British, but they were successful in Canada before anywhere else. They weren't doing that well with their 1st album at first except in Canada and came to Canada to tour. I was at their show in Toronto and was a huge fan. 😎🤘 🟥🍁🟥
Absolutely amazing
