      Big problem is the job that streamers do. Streamers sell the game for audience. In future when D5 comes, streamers will play it, they like it or not and once again ppl will buy the game. Blizzard will be happy and they can just copy pasta D4 ----> D5 and can spent more time drinking coffee at the office and build up mediocre game just 2 days before launch.

  • @jasensantos209
    @jasensantos209 Рік тому +35

    The mere fact that this guy created the affix system and the itemization in d2 is amazing. In my opinion, the itemization and the feeling you get when a GG item drops is what keeps people playing d2 20 years later.

    • @brandonstanley9300
      @brandonstanley9300 10 місяців тому +2

      I agree with this completely. The itemization in D2 is what keeps me interested and I haven't seen another game come anywhere close to it.

    • @BG1435q

      the problem is that the new generations are not liking that, their brains would melt if you told them theres ilvl 85 areas where monsters can drop any item in the game, and that you cant farm specific boss for an item, and that that boss has less then 1/10 droprate for the item they want. they would have a meltdown and quit the game

    • @jasensantos209
      @jasensantos209 2 місяці тому

      @@BG1435q yup very true. Gamers and games nowadays provide instant gratification. D3 and d4 are perfect examples of the shift. They just shower you in uniques, set items and legendaries to mask the fact that the game is mediocre

    • @stephenblack8698
      @stephenblack8698 21 день тому

      @@jasensantos209Disagree. The fact that they rain items upon you is WHY the game is more mediocre. I Love D3, but the items Feel less worthwhile because they drop so often.
      Drastically reducing drop rates would give that game a better grind and follow-through.

      They could hire all these amazing people who put their heart and soul into the game, give them enough time to get creative, and leave out the annoying bullshit lootbox mechanics - and then compare profits with their bland, boring, money squeezing, pay to win version, and come to the conclusion that the latter pays better, so they go with the second option. As sad that it is, this is how most of these companies work. Minimum risk, maximum profit, and the rest doesn't matter.

So much so that then all the other OG creators joined the live stream too...!!!! Thank you for sharing this Llama, this was inspirational for any game creation aspirer and there is a wealth of knowledge to take away from the discussion. I have so much respect for what these guys created, and so much appreciation for the hard work and detail/passion they put into their games. They didn't make games to make money, they simply made games that were great to play, not corrupted by monetary desire. Take a hint, Blizzard.

That game bares so many beautiful memories for me in a tough period of my life and I remember that I almost enjoyed it same as I did playing D2, and for me, D2 is probably one of my the top 3 games ever made that I played, watched or heard of (and that is from thousands of games during these what almost 30 years)! I do wonder if it would be interesting to play and/or watch that kind of oldie in this new age of games... Hm... Have you ever played it MrLlama?

    The reason I like Llama is because he just had a passion for games and does not have a business professional side at all, at least that I can see. Not saying he isn’t professional but like, he’s wearing a D4 shirt, a game he doesn’t even care for anymore, when most of us would wear a D2 shirt talking to a Schaefer lol.
    That being said Llama you’re a great interviewer, we’ve all said that in your past interviews. You know the history, hear the person talking, and don’t interrupt.
    D2 will forever go down as my favorite game and for many people here… and Erich thank you for your contribution to this amazing game.
    Edit: also, Llama, get a silent click mouse and a quieter keyboard maybe for interviews 🤣 they are both super cheap and can be swapped out whenever. I got one for meetings lol.

    It's pretty nuts that back in the day one guy could've done so much design on the game, today there would be a whole team for a single feature. And he was an artist when he started! Albeit he had so much understanding of the mechanics from childhood already.

    It's hilarious that their big moment was also a common hook among players. The Tristram music and art starts the journey but the first time I walked my warrior into the cathedral and destroyed a skeleton at my friends house I was hooked.

    How could you not ask about Schaefer's hammer??? My mind is fuzzy but I think that came out before the rune words and it was truly awesome. Then it became way out shadowed.
    Interview Peter! I like many of the runewords and their concepts. I want to hear his story doing LOD without Schaefer and Brevik

    What a great interview, still surprised Llama has not dived into POE. Me personally i coud never get into POE but from the looks of it it’s definitely made for hardcore gamers like llama who could start to master this game. Im hoping POE 2 gets me when it comes out. Also Blizzard please hire these guys even as an advisor or contractor for D4, im sure whatever they suggest would boost the game tremendously.

    I think the Chat Gem does exactly what it is made to do, to make people question if it does anything. I believe it does nothing. But yet, making people wonder is therefore making it do something. So yes, the Chat Gem does both nothing and something at the same time. Erich's answer kinda confirmed it in my eyes, and makes perfect sense why he won't say anything about it's use. If he did confirm that's what it was, it's no longer a mystery, therefore useless.

    I love how he talks about going from D1 to D2 like, it was jsut a laundry list of things they wanted to add into diablo 1 but under the name diablo 2 with a better engine essentially and i feel like this is the main point that most big devs now sleep on, like they never take the previous game and make a new game with all the lessons they learned about what was fun and not in that game even now that they have access to ALL OF THE DATA. Crazy.

    Curious about Moonbeast. Nowadays i feel there's sometimes very high expectations, I don't know if a small company can create something that's objectively better than what already exists - not impossible - but I would be interested in something that relits a little bit of the excitement i used to have for games. In any case I'll be following the reddit and discord maybe loosely and will be curious of what will become of this. I liked Xenonauts, even Xenonauts 2, which is to some extent similar stories (if a bit too exact a replica instead of spiritual successor).
    Good stuff., great talk, I'm glad all these people still exist, work, and we can hear about them. There's a lot to be learned and remembered from the older generations.

    Erich, David, Max, Peter & co. defined meaningful gaming to an entire generation. Seeing happenstance after happenstance fall just so in order for Diablo to come to fruition is almost spooky as it seemed fated to be given all of the hurdles along the way.
    Truly remarkable interview Llama and Erich. Could you imagine the games Llama, Erich and co. could produce together in the future? A match made in Heaven/Hell/Sanctuary.

    I played like 25h of Rebel Galaxy but didn't beat it. It had a lot of charm and I always thought it was surprising that I just didn't see anyone playing it on PC. At the time the only UA-cam content I could find for it was for consoles.
