Happy Since I Met You is a television play written by Victoria Wood, and broadcast on ITV on 9 August 1981. It stars Julie Walters, Duncan Preston, Tracey Ullman and Jim Bowen and was directed by Baz Taylor as part of ITV's Screenplay series. In Happy Since I Met You, Duncan Preston, who would later become one of her regular co-stars, worked with Victoria Wood for the first time. It was the last full-length drama by Wood to be televised for some years, the next being Pat and Margaret (1994).
Who thinks love was better before mobile phones? waiting for the phone to ring, surprises and letters
It's being young that makes it special. You're a bundle of hormones and it's all new and exciting.
Totally agree. It's treated like a commodity to be picked now .
@@muk8804 You just got old, that's all.
I don't know why I keep watching Victoria Wood stuff. I keep hoping for a gentle laugh and just end up in tears. Oh yeah, I remember, that is why. ❤
Victoria had an amazing talent for seeing humour and absurdity in humdrum everyday existence. She’ll never be forgotten
0.
First time I have seen this, I have not seen Duncan that young.....🤩Victoria will always be missed....😍
Julie Walters, a national treasure ! Victoria Wood always ahead of her time, always missed never forgotten. 😊
Our Jules is such an amazing actress and hasn't changed over all these years. Never seen this film before. So many thanks!!!
Well, im only 46 seconds in and already im filled with nostalgia at those blue launderette plastic carrier bags with the white handles that used to 'do up' at the top ! In 1981 a lot of kids would go to the launderette with their mothers. Even though the 80s is now seen as a time of wealth and prosperity, a lot of people didnt have washing machines at home. Kids now er days will never know the smell of a launderette or having to sit patiently, waiting for the cycle to finish.
We had a Hoover twin tub at home, which is hard work, and no tumble dryer so we often still used the laundrette.
Absolutely
@@Dragonrdh The fence works well as a clothes dryer and a hose to rinse the clothes or rain.
Poppins123 I liked your spin cycle down memory lane: Some launderettes would have a tropical island, the sand like demerara sugar & colorful parakeets. Whilst sitting, one could meditate in tune with the final whirring of the spin dryer.
I was thinking the same 😂😂😂
Nobody writes like this anymore. Glorious!
Thanks for sharing.
Jim Bowen was the host of Bullseye, a TV darts show which was so bad it was good. He was a teacher-turned-standup comedian but I didn't know he'd done any acting. This play has just reminded me how romance can give way to boredom and then how tricky it is to find a more durable way to be together.
First time I've seen this, I think. My emotions are all over the place, so beautiful, so classic Victoria and Julie, everything down to the air and the walks in the parks took me right back. Just breathtaking.
So many brilliant ladies in this, I kept waiting for French & Saunders to show up.
Victooria Wood has some great observations on mainstream life, her wit is priceless along with her acting friends.
Victoria Wood's written dialogue within this fifty-two minute gem, is as sharp as a nail gun delivered on rapid fire. Sometimes I found myself having to stop & replay to fully understand the banter. Excluding "Frances" & "Jim" I counted 29 other characters the audience are introduced to: The script is a delight to hear, but it's also a challenge for the intellect to follow, because lines are spoken so rapidly. Classic comedy from one of our finest. V.W rip.
Yea the rhythm and speed of the speech was pure Victoria. What a wonderful talent for the ordinary bitter sweet absurdity of life. Never forgotten
Another good story and humour from victoria wood she had such a talent
I couldn't understand most of it, neither could the captions. I don't know what kind of English that was, but there's a reason for having BBC Standard!
Duncan Preston was a dreamboat back then.. He reminds me of an ex....
Lovely Julie Walters ,,she was brilliant in Billy Elliot, enjoyed watching all of shows. Thankyou
❤❤ watch educating Rita .. brilliant 💙
Love Julie Walters. ❤️🌹👍
oh my gosh, my golly! Finally a film to call my own! Thank you for sharing this! I'm 60
Loved the songs, miss you Victoria 🥰
Pre-marital pastry..... Victoria got me in the first five minutes!! Amazing, clever insight in her writing. Maestro
Love this so true to real life. Living together is a minefield. Is the answer to live separately and date.
Loved this, I would have been 10/11 at that time and am from Lancashire, so nostalgic and real ,funny, sad and brilliant.
Thank you ☺️
"the price of a pan scrub is enough to make you emigrate' - somethings havent changed eh .. Fabulous dialog, such a blast from the past, loved every minute, Wood and Walters where a dream combination of talent
Brilliant line! Northern camp!
Duncan Preston is so handsome.
RIP Vic
yes indeed gone to soon - such a loss
OMG....a slim Duncan Preston with a full head of hair! Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be. I wonder if he can bear to watch this?
Live long enough and that applies to every one. Including you.
Lovely seeing Duncan Preston an a romantic role. He’s a brilliant flirt.
This is a gift that just keeps on giving. What a cast. It feels all early and not quite fully formed and brilliant. Even Carol Leeder! Playschool must have given her the day off.
Superb writing, superb acting, and aching nostalgia for all the 80s details. Victoria could write poignant scenes as well as funny ones, and this is a little classic.
Never seen this before, what an absolute gem!take me back to the eighties please
And me 😊
I miss Victoria Wood so very much and had never seen this before. Withington Baths, what a bonus to see that place again. Just lovely. Thanks for uploading.
Too true to life then... And now!
Julie Walters is excellent, and charming!
Thoroughly enjoyed this nostalgic trip....where have all those years gone !! Brilliantly written and acted by all..just love Julie Walters x
a box of national treasures.
Got lost in this, watching with a huge grin and tears in my eyes. That's the power of victoria's writing and her superb cast.
I’ve never seen that before and I loved it! 🥰 I love the end. Love isn’t perfect, it’s a game for two. But, love is real and can be beautiful sometimes if you let it. You just have to remember to not to be a total jerk, understand your part in the game and forgive when needed, even if it’s days later.
An absolute gem. Thanks for uploading. Loved every minute.
Thanks so much for uploading this - loved every minute. Classic Ms Wood, great to see such a young Julie Walters and Duncan Preston, fantastic trip down memory lane. Bliss! ❤
Duncan was so handsome really enjoyed this
Jeez i had julie walters hair style in 1981
So did my mom lol😂 x
And me haha 😂 I called it the Ian rush 😂
All these amazing posts of things I've never seen. Amazing. Thx so much
I've never forgotten this, and thought I'd never have a chance to watch it again. Can't thank you enough - it's still brilliant!
Not seen this before. Really enjoyed it. Brilliantly played by Julie Walters and Duncan Preston. Thanks for the upload.
Awh to hear our Victoria.
Brilliant writing by Victoria Wood. Generosity from Victoria Wood, giving funny lines to her “ensemble” of friends, overacting by Julie Walters as usual. It doesn’t get much better. RIP Victoria, Queen of British Comedy. The Pride of Prestwich. Gone too soon. Never to be forgotten.
How can you call that overacting? She underplays beautifully, always in possession of herself, and remarkably keeping track of her mood progression. Difficult stuff. All that surface trivia, with all that moodiness underneath. A real character study.
Awwwww never seen that its were lovley unlike dating today brilliant victoria, wood n Julie Walters can't believe Victoria's gone music made me cry at end 😢
Young Tracey Ullman .Jim Bowen. And Eric Olthwaite's mum from Ripping Yarns. Now thats diverse casting.
There was a nice community thing in the laundrette too, if you had sheets to fold, someone would always offer the help.
The glamorous blonde teacher sat in the staff room is Ruchard Whitely's widow.
That’s her! It was bugging me trying work out where I’d seen her face before…At first I thought it might be Susan Penhaligon…
Kathryn Apanowicz
Yes she is. I remember her making a guest appearance on Countdown, very sadly just before he passed. She was in Emerdale and Eastenders too, dont know if anyone else remembers
I love her she is great Julie Walters
the gardian reviewer and daily mail reviews at the time, must never have fell in love for their petty grips about this lovely play
Did they pan it?
never seen this before in full - only the odd clip. I really enjoyed this. Funny but also quite dramatic. Great drama acting and far removed from the off the wall stuff the team do in the As Seen On Tv stuff
I totally got Frances, she reminds me of me (but she's a lot funnier and prettier!) - can't live with anyone but you can still fall in love. So well done, thank you Victoria Wood, spot on as always.
Victoria Wood 19 May 1953 - 20 April 2016
I totally missed out on telly from 1976-1986. It's great to catch up.
Thanks so much, what a treat haven't seen this for years 😄👍👍👍
Victoria Wood, absolutely brilliant. Still fresh, still funny
16:00 the speech in the vegetarian coffee shop: classic Julie Walters / Victoria Wood at their best!
Another one bites the dust!
Thank you for this!
Nicely done.
Super and funny film, thank you ................
Typically brilliant and ahead of its time. V.Wood. RIP genius
Brilliant thank you so much for this, memories came flooding back very nostalgic
A smart Julie walters , nice acting & although dated it is a crafted dialogue that makes it worthwhile. Along with the acting
Thank you
Great actress!
This film is the best thing I’ve seen in a long long time. I esp love the little bits where Frances talks to herself/her books, so real. Thanks so much for uploading!
Beautifully done.
First time of seeing this, was shocked at people mentioning Victoria Wood in the past tense, I had no idea she had died, very sad news albeit late. I have not watched T.V for over 20 years, in fact I don't own one, I don't have a radio or take "news" papers ( I much prefer toilet tissue), I know I am out of touch with it all. Cancer is a terrible thing, and so unnecessary to die from it as the cure is out there, my late wife died of cancer after a 4 year battle. So very sad.
Really enjoyed that thank you
Great .Thanks britishcomedy
Thanks dear
That was a wonderful watch...thanks so much ❤
Absolutely brilliant !
👍 ❤
Maggie Steed! Love her.
People complaining about prices in 1981 and 43 years later are still doing the same. Nothing really changes doesn’t it.
Julie was fab in Pat & Margaret
Under-rated classic.
Wow, those girls hairstyles, reminds me of my school days so 80’s every one had those flicked fringes, 1981 I was 15 the Christmas with the family was just like ours, the phone was always in the hallway, sure it was so you wouldn’t be on the phone too long.
Filmed in Sale. South Manchester. Town I grew up in. How unexpected and how curious
I had totally forgotten that Jim Bowen did a little acting before bullseye. I just associate him with stand up and darts quiz shows
werent they beautiful!
"Alwyn seeing a Costa Rican and now this!"
Walters (in bed with Duncan Preston's character, enjoying the post-coital glow): "So that's how you do it... Rawlplugs... no wonder mine fell down."
Mabel Wheeler (Barbara New) from You Rang, M'Lord?. Loved her.
Tracey Ullman 6:04 :O
I enjoyed it...
Jim Bowen would of been a great at other TV acting jobs, he was a run o the mill stand up but I recon he would of done very well, if ever he was given a chance
Never live together!! The secret to happiness
Would that TV companies and the BBC fund well-written single dramas like this today. Sadly, they are long gone. New drama has become the province of Netflix, HBO etc., available only to the well-off who can pay the subscriptions.
Quiz shows and reality TV is so much cheaper to produce
Is that the guy from Rita Sue and Bob too at 38:00?
Only since moving back to Manchester have I realised July Walter’s accent is distinctly Brummy, especially since the rest of the cast is very Mancunian.
Bloody hell, she’s in Athena. What ever happened to posters?
Thank you so much for these. I didnæt know they existed and I am absolutely in love with these films. So down to earth and full of life! Love them!
"piss artist"Julie says that line in Educating Rita.
Ahh when life was simple& normal
... and women knew their place, and gay people couldn't be teachers and were murdered in the streets... happy days /s
is that jim bowen from bullseye
In one!
Wow Sue Wallace who played Nichola boudex from dinner ladies here on this 😮
The entire script sounds like one of Victoria Wood's songs...
Does Julie Walter's still act? I don't have Brit Box. just Acorn- I should subscribe to Brit Box along with Prime as I love British TV. Vitamin pills for a gift, how thoughtful...Have you seen the movie starring Tracey Ullman and Kevin Klein, " I love you to Death" , William Hurt, River Phoenix and a great, great actress whose name I can't remember- Joan Cusak, maybe, as the "nutty" mother-in-law. Another absolute favorites is Haley and John Mills, The Family Way. LIVER? LIVER? yech...Sorry for misspelled names, up at 2:30 with a migraine, yes I know I shouldn't be looking at a glare! Don't feel like reading...
She certainly does. the third ABBA musical is coming up.
She’s also Mrs. Weasley from the Harry Potter movies.
