- Nearly A Happy Ending is a television play written by Victoria Wood, which ITV broadcast on 1 June 1980. It is a sequel to Wood's earlier play Talent, with the same lead characters: Julie (played by Julie Walters) and Maureen (played by Wood).
Still cannot accept she is gone.
62 was too young for such a wonderful person, especially as so many evil bar stewards live into their 80s and 90s
I agree. Still mourning for her and Alan Rickman. Gone to soon.
Watched all of Victoria's plays and saw her live on stage in the late 80's. Then as now, I saw her as a national treasure. She is much missed. Thanks for sharing.
There were times I didn't appreciate Victroria's humour and I guess it's because she was on TV when I was too young to understand the women's themes she had running through her work. As I got older I started to really enjoy her wit and comedy. Now I can see her genius. May she rest in peace 🙏
That beginning scenes capture the early 80s perfectly. The sound of kids on the street, the dogs wandering the streets, the ice cream van, the general greyness and then the silence apart from the cars in the distance.
Yes, particularly as the 1980s were less than six months old when it was recorded. Looks rather 70s to me as well!
@@actualbennett2245 absolutely. There's an argument that the first part of the 80s formed part of the "long 70s".
Yes!!!
@@th8257 yep I think so!! I had most my early childhood in the sixties, and half my teens in the seventies the other half in the eightees!
General greyness? Ridiculous! It was no more grey than it is now. In general, there as a lot more colour about then compared to now - cars, clothes, interior design etc. It is the 21st century that is grey - or rather, monotone. Just look around you at ho people dress, the colours of their cars, the uniform white/grey/cream of the interiors of buildings...
What a talent Julie Walters is coupled with the writing of Victoria this is amazing.
Typical Wood and Walters, witty and funny repartee between the two of them. Victoria was a wonderful writer and comedienne, R.I.P.
Hi how are you doing?
The slimmers club song is a joy in the middle of all the conversation
So funny. But so beautiful. Victoria Wood was exceptionally talented and was completely unique because fame never got to her head
It is the way she is funny and sad. I wish she had gone to bed with that man. I think she was very attractive.
I love these two together. ❤❤
Wood and Walters great pairing and God Bless Victoria Wood, may she Rest in Peace, XX Stay Safer Everyone XX
Many thanks for the upload. The multi talented, unique, unequalled, Victoria Wood was so generous to her fellow thespians. RIP Victoria, the Pride of Prestwich. Gone too soon but never to be forgotten.
I can hear the Welsh language being spoken on the TV in the background....how wonderful:))
Ah those heavy fringes and Laura Ashley smocks!
What a gem! Incredible songs, a bittersweet story and such a showcase for the talents of Wood and Walters.
Love the Welsh programme on TV at the beginning 👍🏻
the musical numbers were great. especially the barbershop quartet.
Wonderful! I’m so glad I watched the first part of the show. Victoria and Julie were wonderful! 😊
Goodness I think we all lived in that flat at one time didn't we 🙈
Definitely not.
ive never studied vic's work before, but listening to the woman at 18:00sec and the way she says her words is soooo like the way victoria sings in "the ballad of barry and freda".... its the way vic crams her words into a sentence, to the syllable
That was wonderful. It stands up so well.
Makes me happy on watching Victoria and Tracey whilst depressed ❣
That was great great great!!! Loved every minute of it!!!!!
‘I had my tea out of a vase this morning’ 😂😂😂
This is awesome. Thanks for posting.
Absolutely delightful. Thanks for the upload
These are absolutely wonderful.
I had a co-worker who would fill her pockets with keys and coins on her initial weigh-in, just to give the illusion of progress at later weigh-ins.
Wonderful ❤️ 🙏
Thanks so much for postin this . Never seen it, but was only 14, before I became a huge fan. keep em coming
Fantastic..before twatter etc.irony we are enjoying on said social media
Brilliant thank you for putting this up.
Love the sound of the distant rumbling traffic. This keeps me company on a Saturday evening.
Bloody funny! Can't believe I haven't seen it until now .
Thankyou i 'am so glad i found your channal just subbed can't wait to watch them all.
Love it .miss vic xx💔
Excellent
Oh no! I haven't finished watching the first film yet. Talent!
Yes. That rings bells. 😯
Excellent upload so good to see Victoria Wood's earlier work. I tried posting a few early sketches I found but You Tube takes them straight down. Glad you were able to show this.
Enjoyed this and thanks for the upload, but I did not understand the ending
Essentially, the girls would have been better off staying together rather that Julie’s character going off with a man she found dull and Victoria’s character thinking ‘What’s the point of dieting, I’m miserable. No man wants me anyway so I’ll be fat and happy.’ Had they spent the evening together, they would have both been happier. That’s it really. 😊
Great . Thanks britishcomedy
a very pennies from heaven play marvelous
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@42.45 that song was a Pavarotti vs Celine Dion song. Hate you/Love you from 1997. I had the album of Lets talk about love.
That flat must have been cold, Maureen's still wearing her hat, scarf and coat.
SO BORING🥱
Another British film good cast comedy
Note to self for future viewings: the Businessman song starts at 26:36.
Hello how are you doing?
Welsh on the TV, brilliant.
Come to Wales and you can treat yourself to a dedicated Welsh language channel called Ch4 (104 in Sky TV. The English Ch4 is on 108)!
@@asseyez-vous6492 Its where I live, but thank you for promoting S4C.
I wonder if this was influenced by Dennis Potter (Pennies from heaven, the Singing Detective)... I remember seeing those around the same time. Serious drama with the unexpected bursting into song.
This preceded Pennies
@@Etheldreda-no pennies was released in 78 or 79 i think. So pennies from heaven was completely unique.
That's one of the nicest things I've ever heard - so sweet.
Great songs!! I heard about V. Wood on BBC4 today and I wanted to know about her work.
Her later work is even better! Happy hunting☺
You are in for a treat!!!!!
Hey it’s Phyllis from corrie
Do you have she'll be wearing pink pyjamas with Julie Walters haven't seen it for years
Hello how’re you doing?
Julie Walters always plays Julie Walters. 'Mrs O' in everything!
Meanwhile you travel page to page writing the same tripe as you go.
Did people actually used to write their names on their window screens? I have seen this in a couple of Victoria wood pieces but didn’t realise it was a thing. Am I naive?
Yes, that was definitely a thing in the 80s.
It was a thing because there was boredom and lots of condensation in those days.
It is so hard to understand Julie Walters. It's like Tracey Ullman doing a Julie Walters imitation.
Exactly 😂...yet,
so enjoyable...❤
Tracey Ullman
Do you have the 3rd TV Movie she did for ITV in 1980? Happy Since I Met You?
Pat and Margaret
@@007beck9 Pat and Margaret is brilliant seen it so many times but it always makes me laugh.
Genius. So poignant watching this in the week of International Women’s Day and with all that has been happening over the last few days. We have moved on over the last 40 years but most issues are the same.
I know - men still doing the vast majority of the dangerous/physical jobs - resulting in an over 90% male work gender death gap, female crimes excused as 'mental illness', males flagged for 'toxic masculinity', the 'sexist' pay gap - debunked by the Office for National Statistics - still used by Feminists, history rewritten (the suffragettes were not heroines and the 'vote' issue far more complex then is made out), all female shortlists for jobs women don't generally desire, male suicides at an all time high, 'patriarchy' theory the accepted (claptrap) PC mantra, women's DV - including against CHILDREN - downplayed or ignored, lack of DV shelters for CHILDREN and men abused by women, difficulties for those abused by females in finding organisations to listen, skewed stats, skewed arguments, skewed everything. Never mind, Celia. I don't believe TRUE equality will ever happen. But some of us keep trying. We must just be aware that male chivalry and female narcissism are powerful and long entrenched attitudes in the discussion.
Did I spot Kathy Burke in the slimming ladies group?
Bleak
Awwwww wen life were simple I only just saw couple there plats well ons seen em.on TV but it means more wen your 55 than 14 oh the days wen curling to guess n make up would get u a boyfriend if u were lucky xxxx
What is it about?????
Julie Walters was a 'babe' in those days.
@michaelchristian5089
She still is.......
@@Willowsmum Agreed.
I'm a Brit ex-pat, and I'm sorry, but I find this weird and, at times, creepy. And not funny at all. Which is a shame because I normally love Julie Walters.
It's a drama
Isn't it awful. I love Wood and Walter's but I had to switch off as soon as they started smoking...sooooo triggered.
Everyone who lived like that smoked back then. You poor sheltered thing 🤣
how strange
I guess 1950s movies are out, then.
I saw the gold package and wanted a Benson and Hedges, no...whats the gold thin British box brand?, that's the one I still want, and I haven't had a smoke in idk 22 or 23 years. Smoked those a bit in the 80s. Dunghill cigarettes! Oh my. That's the one.
How bizarre 😂
Fab.
Poor Maur. How could Julie abandon her?
Please im tryinf to find the name if a movie filmed in late 1970"s or early 80"s filmed somewhere in Britain about 3 female roommates who answer an ad for a job and the last roommate goes looking for them and finds out they were killed !!!! PLEASE HELP!
Joe from next door is different.
I'm not a performing monkey.
Julie used maureen for her car a bit.
