    Although you didn’t see me in the film, where Patricia Routledge was on the top deck of the London Bus, I was the Conductor downstairs !. I worked at Shepherds Bush Garage in West London, and the bus was hired by the filmmakers, so we weren’t carrying any passengers. We drove up and down Holland Park Avenue between Shepherds Bush and Notting Hill Gate whilst the filming took place. Myself and the bus driver were introduced to Patricia Routledge at the beginning of the filming and she was so charming. I was a bit ‘starstuck’ and although there were no airs and graces on Patricia’s part, I was too shy to ask for her autograph !. It was an absolute pleasure to meet her, something I’ll never forget.

      Dame Patricia Routledge is excellent in every role she plays. It's been three years since you wrote your comment. I hope perhaps you've been reading Barbara Pym's novels. She created an entire world in her books that's very authentic and real. I'm in the USA where she became quite popular after she died. I discovered her books when I was at university 40 years ago and she's been my favorite writer ever since.

      I would suggest NOT starting with Quartet in Autumn because, while it is fine writing for sure, it's very unlike her other novels- it's rather bleak/depressing in its atmosphere. He other novels are more up-beat and cheery affairs, also very astute in her observations, but not depressing

I love her novels - her settings, characters and voice are unique, In the panel game of guessing the author, a paragraph would be enough to recognize Pym. What a fantastic film this was; in a quiet, understated way but shot with humour (much like Pym's style) it captured her world... and I can't imagine anyone better than Patricia Routledge to play Pym. This is a beautifully made film. I recently discovered Barbara Pym and have now read all her books. She is an exceptional writer and especially her earlier books are filled with gentle humour and a deep understanding of human nature. She was a master of creating a singular world where all her characters operate and perhaps they are cosy worlds but often the truth is found in the trivialities of our daily lives.

    What a beautiful drama it reminded me in some ways of a book called The scent of water where the character was very similar to the main protagonist in this quietly understated on the other characters in the programme were equally brilliantly played but finally I don't feel one could not mention the indomitable Patricia Routledge fantastic actor and as one of the other commenters have stated chronically underrated also something I noticed which having watched Patricia Routledge for many years I think she has a very strong resemblance facially two Dame Joan Plowright fantastic programme and I enjoyed it immensely best wishes somebody who loves literature London😊😊

    Having watched this I can understand why Philip Larkin thought so
    highly of her : they both looked Life square in the face free of false sentiment .
    Their detachment could appear rather cold hearted but it's their deep compassion
    which shines through all they wrote .

    She voiced thoughts that many of us have ..especially finding things to fill the time while waiting for The Day, enjoying and noting all around her as I do.It is uncanny she expressed herself exactly as I do myself. "I believe it is a dire sin to wait for each day to pass so I keep myself busy" ....Thank you for sharing this. So very well acted out by all.i looked up Paul Scott, Staying On. It is a hurting shame she did not have the luck or siding to win that one time. He went on to a much better novel re Day of the Scorpion.

    I've never read Barbara Pym, I watched this because I've been watching Alan Bennett plays and monologues and this looked interesting. Tomorrow I'm going searching for a copy of one of her novels. I get the feeling that she writes in a comparable way to Jane Austin, she writes about what she knows and creates characters of humour that are real and neighbourhoods that are utterly believable. I can't wait to get reading. Thanks for uploading this and opening up a new author for me.

      Well, because this isn't really what I got out of Barbara Pym. (only watched 10 minutes, so I'm probably pre-judging). The bit with the arrogant Bishop looks to me like a direct, updated nick from Jane Austin. (Was it Mr Collins?) Some must see a lot in common twixt Austen and Pym, my sis loved both, while I at the same time as she was finding Pym, I was discovering Anita Brookner, by whom I was far more impressed.

    This was lovely to come across. Barbara Pym seems like an old, dear friend to me. I share her gentle amusement at the little absurdities of everyday life, though we live(d) in different times and places. She provides me with comfort, reassurance, and happiness almost every day. I have read all of her novels many times, several to the point that I can recite passages from memory. I think she's wonderful! I am glad to find other Pym fans here because I long for your company too. Isn't it fun to find the reference to another of her books as you read along?

    How wonderful to find this as I am currently reading Hazel Holt's biography, A Private Eye, of Pym yet again. UNlike many commentators, I have only read one Pym novel, I am a biography fan, and I can relate to BP in so many ways. Interesting to see the real Henry Harvey (I resented him when I was younger because he had the nerve not to be in love with BP, LOL, now in my dotage I can see that her odd aloneness probably would always make a marriage and children unlikely.)

    • @carolinebarnes6832
      @carolinebarnes6832 5 років тому +9

      Wouldn't it be nice if we could stop thinking of aloneness as odd? For some it is natural as it seems to have been in BP's case. Perhaps some of us can only achieve our uniqueness in a solitary state, just as for others it is exactly the opposite.
