Repair Blog: Routine Gibson Explorer Setup Gone Bad

  • A friend had purchased this guitar and wanted it setup and to have new pickups installed. During the setup I kept encountering problems with uneven frets. After some investigation I learned that some frets were popping out and rocking across the fretboard. What should have been a routine setup turned into a long excursion as I had to pull the bad frets and reseat with glue.
After getting the guitar wired back up and in playing condition I demonstrate how the custom wiring setup works. In this guitar I installed a Bass Cut Control that works very well. Most of the bass cut diagrams you will see online don't work and in this video I will show you the right way and you can hear the results for yourself.
    Thanks for stopping by!

Apparently the guitar tech at my local brand name music store is not good at setting up my guitar. Heck, I would like to buy my next guitar from Mr. Purgason. His attention to detail & knowledge is awesome!! Incredible player & super kind in-person! He's just as cool as he seems!

Been a while since I've seen you post a video, i know this is 3 months old, but i think the last video i saw was a couple years ago, one when you repaired i think a peavey butcher or VTM, and then an Ampeg SVT. Glad to see you're posting again and more regularly. I find your methods and techniques familiar and easy to follow. No overly complicated bs, and enough information that i can get a good idea of whats going on. cheers and welcome back!

Also feel the pain on the unexpected fret work, just finished up re-fretting a Hondo Formula 1 Randy Rhoads copy and a 90's Jackson Pro MIJ Warrior, both with stainless steel jumbos for a good friend of mine moving out to California, and at least for the time being.... fuck stainless frets... haha! That bone nut looks beautifully cut!

The 57 Classic is a sleeper among all of the PAF style pickups out there. I have a set in my ES-339 and really like them even though I typically play hotter pickups (Duncan JB). I prefer the 57 Classic to the various Burstbucker models.
