I Installed the Biggest Frets, Why?| Extra Dumbo Frets

- Greetings.
The idea of making a video about the biggest frets for a guitar has been brewing for a long time.
Therefore, I started looking for people who wanted to install such frets for themselves and filmed the installation process for you.
I didn’t like working with the frets, they are quite difficult to process and after that the guitar looks as if it was made specifically for the Chibson USA blog.
However, the guitar really feels like it's scalloped afterwards.
So this can be considered as an alternative if you don't want to damage the fret board of your guitar.
What do you think about it?
I will be happy to discuss this with you in the comments. - Навчання та стиль
When one is uncertain about a scalloped neck.. This process is reversible.
Let's write it down as an advantage
Can you pitch bend by pressing harder like scalloped?
@@HamCar1000yes, absolutely. Yngwie Malmsteen actually uses the biggest frets fender offers, and the scalloped fingerboard.
@@nicksalvatore5717 And super light 008 gauge strings.
Yep. That's gonna be a world of comfort too.
This takes railroad track frets to another level

Suggestion: If anyone wants to learn to do stuff like this, but nervous about trying on your guitar, there are plenty of $99 guitars on Amazon guaranteed to come with crazy frets and stuff. Lol. Once you fix it up give it to a kid in the neighborhood or a school.

Facebook market is better. You can get one for less than 50
@@jeffkoerbor1370 Nice. 👍
This is nuts! I mean, now the guitar has 22 nuts. Chibson would be proud!
Pure nuts😉
Fender made tho
Lol "Oops! All nuts"
22 NUTS :O
23?
That certainly is wild looking. Nice thing is that they can be leveled and redressed an epic number of times before there would ever be a need for another refret.
I dont think it would ever need another refret...like ever!
Like 400 years later, the only thing left in the case are the frets! Lolin'
Oh snap! I'm totally stealing that lighter trick for the pipettes. Brilliant!!!!
Glad it was useful for you
Frets are like speed bumps on the roadway. It was told over 40 years ago putting wide frets on a fingerboard and then filing them very low makes for very smooth transitioning up and down the fingerboard with little bumpety bump distress on the fingertips. I'd love to hear from someone who has actually done this and what they think of this idea.
So that they're wider and lower, as in a more gradual bump as opposed to a thinner fret, but with a more sudden raise up? Now I feel like what I just said to try and clarify what you meant was even more confusing lol, but if I'm hearing you right then I like the idea.
So Fretless adjacent?@@michaelhaydenbell
@@michaelhaydenbell Your perception is correct Michael. Wider, lower frets are less painful to traverse than narrower frets of EQUAL height.
The tradeoff is the note pitch at the top of the crown. The pitch of the note at the peak of the crown on a wider fret is not as sharply precise. It's a moot point though because the other consideration is when playing alongside other instruments in a band or orchestra the accuracy of note pitch is often lost. After all, all the instruments are tuned to and compromised by the least accurately pitched/weakest linked instrument in the band anyway and that will always be the case! Although, it is best to be the more well-intonated instrument and not the least.
The bottom line is it should sound good and be fun to play!
Love the fretless bass background music
In the russian-speaking segment of youtube there is guy called Gleb Oleinik who promotes these frets for many years and have them installed on most of his guitars. He is a professional guitar player with many years of the stage experience, not the bedroom one (like myself), so I decided to give it a try during Corona times. For this experiment I got not very expensive Harley Benton LP-style guitar for something around 270 EUR and went to the guitar workshop with the frets. At first the guy who was supposed to install the frets was very sceptical, but ended up doing this. It costed me more than the guitar itself (was in Berlin, Germany), but the result was very impressive.
These frets literally give scalloping effect w/out hurting the fingerboard and work really nice for the music with a lot of melisma (not sure this is the right word) - bends, heavy Zakk Wylde-style vibratos, vibratos on the top of the bend, etc. - playing the same stuff on the guitar with the regular frets is so hard after you get used to these.
After a while I upgraded pickups on my experimental HB guitar and now this is just a great instrument that I play pretty often.
He was right 🎸😊👍.
Looks like it would good for those who have serious arthritis of the hands and still want to play. The pressure down needed is relatively easier ??
Love the style of your video and great fret/neck work. Thanks.
Thank you😉
I use standard sized guitar frets on my mandolins. The tiny frets combined with the extremely high string tensions make very frequent fret fret work a must.
That looks great! I'd love to try something like that myself
Very cool. Straight to the point and thorough.
this is super satisfying and enjoyable to watch
Thank you!😉
you blew my mind with that stretching the pipe the move !
I wish my girlfriend felt that way when she sees me stretching the pipe
You are such an amazing craftsman
Thank you 😉
I'm not sure if i'd do that to one of my guitars, but I'd love to try one out sometime. Great work as always!
Thanks!
Let`s try why not?
i picked up a neat Squier Contemporary Tele couple of years ago that has jumbos. i might try it on that, the fretwire quality is awful on an otherwise nice guitar. but i'll probably just keep the frets clean, chuck a couple dimarzio pups in it and call it a day.
would i do it to my Fender Tele? hell no, it cost double and has great quality jumbo fretwire.
The grunt when trying to cut the frets. 💀 You are seriously skilled, sir!
Thanks😉
Wow!!!!! Congratulations on your super neat work. What model are these frets? They seem to me to be bigger than the dunlop 6000! I wanted to try them! A big hug!
that was a blast to watch and i'm not even usually into this kind of thing
I have Dunlop 6100 extra high jumbos and like them a lot, but I'd like some even taller. Which ones did you use ?
Espectacular! que pegamento usas para los trastes? y como se llama el aplicador de pegamento que usa?
saludos!!
Beautiful big frets! Good work on the fingerboard too!
Thanks!
High action, heavy gage and jumbo frets was SRVs mantra.
Nice work. What brand/ model is that fret wire?
Loved this. No blahblahblahblah, none needed. edited so well it was clear what you were doing. And the mellow stand up bass track was perfect for this.
Fret wire reminds me of tinned number 2 solid copper ground leads I used to install for lighting protection on cell tower equipment… good lord .. the metal nut was a nice touch and what you did to the fret board was fantastic..
Thanks!
I would love to do this to one of my guitars. I love the look of them and love huge frets. You are amazing with your hands and masterful work. Best I've seen.
Thank you! 😉
@@mr.k1t What would a job like that cost?
I like fat frets but not tall like those.
@@alementary4065I also want to know
I'd have to play it to know, looks intriguing.
It feels like scalloped fretboard😉
Yes, I would install those frets myself. I love the standard super jumbo’s already.
As a big fan of jumbo frets, I love this! Wish i could try it out 🔥
Oh, and GREAT work!
Thanks!
Just hate when people cut the strings that way.
What other way is there?
Why? It does zero harm to the instrument.

where did you buy it? great solution for scalloped neck feel without damaging the guitar
I found this to be a very interesting build. You have great skills. I think the stainless steel nut is cool but wonder what effect it has on tone (it's hard to tell from the video's audio) and playability.
Thanks for sharing Chief. Cheers from Indonesia.
Thanks!
Greetings from Ukraine
Thanks - lovely!!!
I bought these frets and when they came they were so big I never used them. I honestly didn’t realise how big they were. Absolutely wild. Now I’m going to dig them out and see if I might use them after all!
Bravo! Nice work. I have been installing and using Jim Dunlop 6000 jumbo frets for years. Great for bends but no throttling the neck and squeezing the strings out of tune please. I would try these and a scalloped fingerboard too. Thanks for all your hard work!
Looks cool!! Nice vid🎉
Thanks😉
what size fret wire is that & where did you get it?
This is amazing!
Thanks!
These are the frets Stevie Ray Vaughan needed when he was alive. I personally love Dunlop 6100 and 6000 fretwire.. but I would love to try these out! They look so fun to play on. Awesome work my friend!
Thanks!
That looks nice.
Greatest fret job any Squire ever had!
I scalloped my Epiphone from the 13th down through the inlays just to dig into bends. I need these frets!
And a new fretboard😄
Looks really cool but is it harder to play some chords due to less space to put your fingers?
Absolutely crazy loved it
Would loved to see with Ibanez Rg too
Cool Idea, I watched the video till the end. I just started getting back into fixing any problems with guitars I own, building guitars from scratch, i used to build my guitars in 80's 90's as well as play. Im 58 now. I agree with your findings, first thing i thought of is scalloped frets . The guitar doesn't sound like its holding tune and is it intonated. did the guitar sound the same before the refret as far as being in tune string to string? Or maybe because the guitar is like scalloped frets, your having trouble getting the chords in tune. probably the more you play, it will sound better because you will get used to fretting the chords with frets like that.
I love this!
Need a light touch or goin sharp. Often extreme changes in fret size can lead to intonation issues, do you experience any?
Cool idea making a nut out of steel. I haven't thought of that before, but now I am.
I made one out of a steel bolt for one of my videos, I liked it and made a few more for a couple of Les Pauls and a Stratocaster
My first thought was "Would that not possibly wear on the strings, as opposed to a traditional nut over time being worn down BY the strings, but I suppose the movement would be so minimal that by the time it ever mattered you'd be changing the strings anyway? I dunno, just thinking it through out loud, but if anyone can speak on it I am definitely curious.
@@michaelhaydenbell I think it could be smoothed down with filing. It'd wear down much slower than plastic and bone nuts. Only thing I can think of is it might have a little too much sustain, and maybe a minor grounding issue? Anyway, I've got some leftover scrap barstock so I'm going to try it out on one of my guitars eventually. I typically go for Graphtech Tusq nuts so this would be a a little bit of money saved vs a $7 steel rod. Rust might be another issue, so I'm going to have to test out some Rustoleum on it too.
Great alternative to scalloping
I’ve seen some insanely big brass frets on some old Soviet guitars before
Looks awesome ! I was just wondering how sliding is on those frets.
That was awesome
Thanks!
Fantastic
You picked the perfect music for this.
Thanks
@ChibsonUSA definitely approves this.👌🏼
I'm inspired by their ideas😁
I love it!!!!!
I'm new to fretting, that solder trick is genius!
WHERE did u get those frets from?! I wanted something like this so badly for like 10 years...
Hmmm nice work 👍
I would love to try playing this, you never know until you try it yourself
So what are the benefits of larger frets? Does it sound louder and more resonant? Can you still get crazy low action on it? Also dumb question, but why isn't fret wire manufactured as perfectly rounded, polished and finished prior to delivery? I'd imagine it'd save a lot of work when installing new frets.
I spoke about the advantages in the description.
Regarding the frets, they do not have to be perfect, because the installation requires further processing.
NIce work. Surprised you didn't round off the edge of the fretboard too.
I REALLY wanna try these! What size are these frets? I just saw some giant frets made by Sintoms just the other day, but have never seen them actually installed. Is that what these are?
Yep, it’s sintoms 4.3mm
I love it 💖
Looks good, seems like it would take less pressure to fret with those.
Hello . I want something like this. Whats the model of the frets? Also do they offer stainless steel of thesame big dimension?
Whats the largest stainless frets available? Thanks.
Super informative seeing every step of this process. That fretboard is looking pristine! I'm guessing the cleaning and oiling/hydrating of the neck is a necessary step before deepening the fret grooves to make sure the wood isn't too dry and chips away?
He doesn't want to get all that waxy crap into the fret slots, so he waited until after to widen them. He uses way too much liquid--doesn't even tell us what the products are!---in this video. It gets the fret board clean and sharp and ready for the frets, but....he sure has a lot of fancy jigs to use! Using a dremel on the fret slots without a router bass is a new one one me, I tried it once and it wasn't a happy thing.
I just enjoy this process. I love it when you can see your reflection in the fretboard
I use a cutter with a diameter of 0.5-0.7mm, in this case you can do it manually and the Dremel won’t be torn out of your hands
ASMR for guitarists. Awesome vid! Subbed! 😁
Thanks!🫡
Cool sound, really... Double bass background music was the best bonus...thanks.. :))
Glad you liked it!
Yes I loved the irony, fretless bass background music!
I absolutely would!
That is absolutely insane. I would love to try that. I love it until I play it then I might not love it 😂. Until then excellent work.
Nice work! What are the fret specs? How can you find these extra heavy frets? I would like to test them with some of my projects...
Thanks! I plan to post them on reverb
Personally I love big frets. I have really slender fingers, and they way they curve can make barre chords more difficult on guitars with regular sized frets. I just feel like the bigger frets play smoother for me, and you don't need as much pressure, or at least that's how it feels
the guitar looks ridiculous. i freaking love it! does it feel like a scaloped neck?
Tapping must sound clean on these. Probably satisfying to play, too.
Amazing skills. Looks like it would be nice for slide guitar...
Why? if there’s one thing Frets don’t affect it’s slide guitar…
Really nice work 🙂 But I feel a question coming on....... Wouldn't those thick frets bugger up the internation?
Why?
The center of the fret remained in the same place
After all the initial sanding and cleaning of the fretboard...Why did you not cover it before sanding and crowning the frets?
Beautiful work man! Makes me want to dust off the workbench it's been too long
Thanks!
Go ahead my friend!
Where can I get a buffing wheel like that for a drill? Also, that is a great idea for thinning that pipette!
Felt polishing wheel
Hey, when the guy put new frets on my Custom Shop Les Paul part of the wood of the fretboard came off with some of the frets. When I went to pick the guitar up he wanted to know if I minded the holes in the fretboard or if I preferred that he would fill them. What do you think about that? He goes, "Happens sometimes"
Well, of course it’s a pity that this happened, but if the fretboard is made of ebony, this can actually be carefully disguised and will not be visible
@@mr.k1t Yeah it is Ebony. He made a wood glue solution and filled it. I don't notice them but I also don't notice the lines on my face without some kind of glasses. lol!
Btw...I think my frets should be bigger too.
I have been playing on big frets for about 30 years now. Feel is great and you can deal with them in a customized way even as they wear. My luthier installs them so I don't know about the hassle there.
Wow. Those things are huge. Where did you find them?
Most likely these are Sintoms 4.3mm frets.
I put 6600 fret wire on my Kramer Striker and love the scalloped feel on the neck now.
Then you will definitely like 4.3 mm
thanks for the video!
why do you use solder when heat up frets?
It transfers the heat to the frets more evenly and efficiently 🙏
😉
@MRKT Is it now difficult to play? What about SLIDE, is that better now, or worse?
The feeling is the same as from a scalloped fretboard, Slides are more difficult to do
Wow...just...wow
How did it/to what degree did it affect the intonation? Loved the video.
To no extent, the center of the fret remained in its place
@@mr.k1t Thank you.
Please can you share the specs and the brand of the frets ? THANKS
Fabulous! Job, I would love to buy some frets like that for my Shop! Thank You! Great Job
My two biggest concerns would be:
1) the feel when sliding hitting all those speed bumps
2) intonation and the physics of string stretch to get over those tall frets. The higher the fret, the more the string stretches.
Definitely a look.
Very well edited and completed. Good techniques for removal. A touch concerned about the fretboard sanding when you had the radius block but then switched to the beam. Was it still 12" radius after?
Nice job though!
Got a squire just like that one, minus the Dumbo frets....I wonder why they have a closed back....I'd the wood back pretty unusual for strats??? Ty
It has a fixed bridge and no tremolo, so no need for a back cavity.😊
I like big frets and I cannot lie.
Love this.
Been thinking of getting a regret and I keep saying I want the biggest wire.
There seems to be no answer in here…
What size is that!?!
I like thin wire but not low elevation so I've taken to using the skinniest SS stuff and scalloping about 3/4 mm off the board
Well I guess the only good news is that they can be leveled many times before getting too low. Stupid question, why did you put solder on the old fret wire before pulling? Was it just to make sure that you had enough heat in it before you tried to pull them off?
That was why, it's a modern thing to do, but it's completely unnecessary, and you risk getting hot solder burns on your fretboard.. He couldn't used a router bass for his dremel when he widened the fret slots.
It's faster and more accurate
