  • Chibson Fake Counterfeit Gibson Explorer How To Tell Real vs Fake. An artist brought this fake Gibson Explorer to our studio not knowing it was a Chinese copy. He bought it used after being told it was a "1 of 1 Custom Shop Lefty from the Gibson Custom Shop." It has real Gibson parts, pickups and pots but these were added to the fake guitar later. This is becoming more and more common as guitar values continue to rise and Chinese factory continue to mass produce fakes at bargain prices of around $170 delivered!

Wait... so the problem here is the cheap Chinese knock-offs are now SO GOOD that you really have be careful you are not mistaking a Chinese knock off for an overpriced Gibson that is 10x the price?? Just sounds like it's time to buy a Chibson and get a hell of a deal!

Well, it´s a fake but if I had to buy a real Gibson, I would never change a screw. On this guitar you can change everything without remorse.

To be fair and honest the Chinese are getting a lot better at making counterfeit and they are well below what Gibson charges... I don't agree with it but at the same time I can see why people buy them they can hot rod them with their own Hardware such as pickups locking tuners and tremolo bars and don't have to pay 1/4 of the cost of a real Gibson. Love all your videos still.

they really do make great hobby guitars. you pay rock bottom prices, and turn around, file this, straighten that, put nice pickups in, work on the this tailpiece, replace that bridge, replace the tuners. All of a sudden, it's outstanding. It's the same cork-sniffing being debunked around the partscaster tribes.

From what I hear, one can order these without the logo on the headstock or hardware. And one can also install their own hardware to customize it to ones liking without worrying if it were a high priced Gibson. I like that scarfing on the neck and headstock, it seriously increases the strength. Make the guitar your own, not just paying for the license to use as most people treat a factory Gibson.

I’m just into the fakes because the selection of lefty’s is insane, they have a left handed knockoff of just about every guitar, and you can just replace whatever sucks about them with like Warmoth parts or whatever.

Lol. That looks identical to my explorer kit except I got the non pickguard one. I bet its the same kit with upgrades. Every detail is identical lol. The weird slot control cavity. The one I see on the real ones is more like a triangular shape but rounded.. not a fan on natural finished guitars. Throw some color on there. Even black stain looks amazing lol.

Oh wow. So you got yours as a kit? Did you have to glue the neck yourself? Where did you buy the kit?

My buddy has a SUPER obvious fake explorer, blank headstock, gibson on truss rod cover, bolt on neck, single wraparound bridge. 😑 Idk how to tell him, lol. I tried and it seemed like he was in denial.

    Interesting feedback.
Trolls notwithstanding...It appears the general consensus "everywhere" is to replace the electronics (PUPs, jacks, switches, pots, wiring, etc. & some hardware items if desired) for "most" guitars from China and save thousands of dollars if one simply desires additional crayons in one's production box that matches the feel/tonal characteristics of iconic off-the-shelf US manufactured instruments. However, if one desires something truly special, it's NOT rocket science, just a guitar any human with the implied skill level/equipment can produce when detailed specs are provided and confirmed via pics (i.e. Back: 1-Piece Mahogany w/12-hole weight relief, Top: 1-Piece 3/4" Plain Maple, Joint: Long Tenon (Ultra Modern Contoured heel) 1-piece Solid Mahogany custom elliptical/modern "flat oval" profile neck, custom paint job: Neck Binding: Electric Violet Single-ply & Body Binding: Dark Turquoise Multi-ply, Fingerboard Material: Solid Ebony, Number Of Frets: 24, 3 Humbuckers, etc.). One can theoretically own the quality of instruments ranging $5k-$10k+ for far less than $2k with all the push/push/pull pot wiring one can dream up (i.e. "Gibson LP Custom Shop Original" 1-off w/case) with due diligence and research for reputable vendors. Those with thousands of dollars burning holes in their collective pockets can donate it to TheRockCzars & the proceeds will support All US instrument manufacturers. ;)

Didn't mention the biggest giveaway on this guitar, the big ugly knot on the top of the body. Gibson would NEVER use such an ugly piece of wood. They also wouldn't piece meal the guitar together the most pieces explorer bodies come in is 3, sometimes 2 on more expensive models or 1 piece on custom shop guitars. But never, NEVER would they use a piece of wood with a huge knot in it. Epiphone wouldn't even do that. Shit even sand down a painted Gibson explorer and it's still going to have a beautiful body

When Gibson makes a guitar and there's a blemish or flaw, they can't sell it for $3000-$5000 so what do they do? Throw it in the dumpster? No, they have an auction a couple of times a year and the Chinese companies buy them and fit them with cheap electronics and hardware and sell them for $300 and everyone is happy.

"And what's more evident in this being a fake chinese made and not a pleiaufenfic Gibson, is this guitar HAS NO QC problems". PS: How you know this is not a Gibson original pleiaufenfic, instead a made in china (ed.: like epiphone) phony? Look those gorgeous avalony inlays:-7
