Todays vlog is all about touching that freight 😂😂 I'm back in the lift gate and took me to some interesting places. There is a reason why most of the time it's the rookies doing the lift gate deliveries. I have to unload over 9k pounds of roofing material because the customers forklift wouldn't start. There is never a boarding day in LTL but that is what makes it so enjoyable. It's truly like forest Gump once said Life is like a bunch of chocolate you never know what your going to get.

Being a European, I am really surprised at how old fashioned American trucks and trailers are...
I mean, that kind of lift gate hasn't been used over here for decades - and we have electrical trolleys for delivering pallets.
I really thought America was lightyears in front of us, but honestly - I wouldn't switch.

I'm getting a good laugh 😃 out of this. I started in the industry in 1974 and at least 80% of the freight was on the floor. A driver spent an entire day touching freight. Most Pand D companies didn't have lift gates. If you had a 55 gallon drum to deliver with no dock you got the consignee to sign the bill with no exceptions before you rolled a drum off the tail onto some old tires. Those were the good ole days.

He paused and acknowledged the misfortune, he called it out: out loud "really?" and within seconds forgot about the whole thing (kinda)
Point is, he could have made a fuss about that one thing all day long, or simply move on. With experience you learn this will happen and getting upset is waste of energy. Energy you will need in order to deal with the ones in the future :D lol

I know this was a while ago - have you ever dragged the pallets off with a truck? Strap from the pallet to a truck, drag 'em to the lift gate and then off the gate to the ground. There are pallet clamps specifically for this but you can usually tie or hook the strap on in a pinch.

  • @johnrschmidt2

Love the videos! I have a questions, if you don’t mind answering:
    1. If you get to a customer, and they don’t have a don’t, but you were just lucky enough to have been pulling a lift gate trailer that day, so you add a charge for the lift gate service.
    2. On your paid lift gate service deliveries, how far do you take the freight into the build, home, etc. for the customer? Is it through the first threshold, or do you take it anywhere they request. For example, you drop the freight to the ground, wheel it 30 yards from the street into the rear door of the office of some sort , and they say, “Can you bring it down the hall, and put it in this storage area?” What’s Estes’ policy regarding lift gate deliveries?
Thanks for any information that you provide.
