In my opinion, if someone is planning to be a PC builder and gamer in the long term, purchasing quality components to use again might matter. This means quality fans such as the ones from Noctua, or a good practical airflow case you may use in many builds. I ended up spending actually more by not doing so in the beginning.
@@GamesForNoobs I agree. I use an Arctic LF II 360. Works like a charm with NF-A12s. Pump PWM needs to be reduced just little bit from 100% to solve the VRM fan noise though.

What was your previous CPU? Was the performance upgrade obvious? I have a Ryzen 7 3700X and might upgrade if it makes a big difference but my cpu is already pretty fast and never runs above 60%
As long as it's rated 80+ bronze and has some headroom you should be fine. I used to always use Seasonic, but for a budget build recently went for a 300w kolink 23.99. It works fine.
I would say one component I severely underestimated was the importance of the Hard Drive - if you have insane components with a HDD instead of an SSD, you will suffer big time on some games when it comes to LOD and textures popping in super late. Took me ages to solve that mystery when playing Kingdom Come Deliverance and an SSD fixed it immediately. Speedy storage actually does matter but again, I'm sure there's an art to spending appropriate vs ridiculous in the same vein as a motherboard.
@@BrucePain-_- bulk storage? SSDs are still bad value for money when you need absolute volume, although far less so than it used to be. As for who'd need that much storage, audio/video recordings take up huge space. Let's calculate because I've got nothing better to do. A 10 minute audio recording at 48kHz sample rate and 24 bit depth is over 86MB in mono, multiplied by amount of tracks you record which for drums is 10-20 microphones depending on size of kit and setup. A 10 minute recording project of drums is 860MB-1.6GB. If you also add a normal band setup with 2 guitars (each guitar doubled per industry standard), bass, and two vocals (usually also doubled), you're sitting at 19-30 tracks, at so 1.6-2-4GB per 10 minutes of recording. 4k60fps video recordings are also HUGE in size, at around 750MB per minute. A music video project for said 10 minute song in 4k60fps is at least 7.5GB in size. Usually it's at least double because of the recorded material that doesn't make the final cut. Both cases disregard retakes which usually aren't deleted beforehand if at all either, and we're still talking minimum of 16.6GB in total for 10 minutes of finished product.
@@TheEmolano Or people can do both by using SSD for OS and gaming, while some HDDs for storage purposes. A bigger case and high w PSU will be needed though

@@BellaciaoSj37kdjsk well first of all if you can, dont get a gtx 1650 super, get a gtx 1660ti, it is far better (check the benchmarks) and not so much more expensive and it will actually play games for 5 years at high settings (at full hd). As long as motherboards go, just buy the cheapest one, they both support M.2 and high enough ram frequency. Just make sure that you choose the right one for your gpu.
@@BellaciaoSj37kdjsk Get a 3300x if you're gaming, it's much better for gaming. Get a b450 like MSI tomahawk as the a320m is a very weak VRM board and doesn't have any more room for future support. The first iteration of Ryzen boards is bad versus at least second gen. I'd recommend a Ryzen 3300x if you can find it, and 3600 cl16 Gskill @ 80$ for 16GB. With a 1660ti you should be good for a bit for gaming at 1080p, however, that's not always true as graphics tend to rapidly advance out of nowhere. Future proof doesn't exist.

One of the things that i've been doing to stretch out my budget for PC parts has been buying them over the course of the entire year, and when i've been altered on PC Part Picker that the part(s) i've been interested in getting has gone on sale. It's helped make it easier to stomach the volatility of this year by letting me focus on getting X or Y part when, say, PSUs were out of stock and overpriced. Also, buying certain components used can help save a good chunk of change, provided you know how to test them individually.

Thanks for this video. I recently got into PC gaming and bought a pre built PC which came with some very decent and also not so decent conponents. I'm now looking to upgrade about half of them this upcoming summer and the more research I do, the more my estimated cost goes down (still meeting my standards, of course) P.S. If any of you watching this video are debating wether to build your first PC or buy one pre built, 100% build your own. It is a bit intimidating, but it took me an afternoon to figure out all the basics. I bought mine as an impulse buy on black friday. I got my money's worth, but I didn't get all of what I wanted, which is the best that you can expect from a prebuilt imo.
An afternoon to learn to build a basic pc?? Lol. You had some “know-how” if you knew they needed to be upgraded. Coming from someone who knew nothing on the inside of a computer, it took about 2 weeks of intense learning to feel confident building a custom loop PC. It was probably like 50 hours of studying over those 2 weeks.
@@mikethompson7046 I didn’t know what a gpu, cpu, motherboard was. Didn’t know where to start. Or what gpu/motherboard/cpu model numbers meant. I was strictly a console gamer until 3 months ago. Ya took me 2 weeks of intense research for a complete newbie to understand most things.
Hey can one of you answer a really easy question I want to build my own but one thing im confused about is what do i do about the OS? Like if i buy a PRE-BUILT pc then windows comes already installed But if i build my own from the ground up how do i get windows on there without having to buy it separately?
@Gorilla Pimp I already had a license key that came with my prebuilt. I know there are ways that you can get Windows license key pretty cheap. Just be careful where you get it from. I have a USB boot drive, which is just a USB flash drive that has the OS on it that I can use to upload it onto a computer if I have to, but I'd still need the product key. There are guides online on how to do this, it's pretty simple. I'm just not that good at explaining things. I think you can use a product key from an old computer you don't use, even if it's not Windows 10 or 11. Just make sure it's deactivated on your old computer. If you're only option is to buy a new product key, consider using Linux OS instead. It's a perfectly good OS. It is a bit daunting to download and use at first, but there are flavors of it that are quite easy to learn and a ton of guides on how to install and use many different flavors of Linux. Many people prefer Linux. I have used many different versions of it at work and school and am constantly debating wether or not I should switch over to Linux or have it duel booted on my computer. TL;DGAS You can download Windows onto a USB and install it that way. There are places where you can get a cheap product key, or you can use a key from an old laptop or something. If you're considering spending over 100 bucks on a product key, Linux OS is a free alternative to Windows OS. You can find guides on how to do any of this online, including here on UA-cam. I hope I pointed you in the right direction. Goodluck.
Good, easy to understand video, price to performance building is all you need to do! Push towards 40% budget towards graphics cards. I've seen builds waste money on motherboards and RAM needlessly! Also to consider is what games will you be playing and how that can affect your monitor/gpu selection! I recall someone purchasing a GTX Titan and pairing it with a basic 1080p screen...
Yeah I have tried to explain to people before that buying a more expensive CPU to "future proof" doesnt really work. Whether you buy an i5, an i7 or an i9, theyre all going to become outdated in 3-5 years time as their IPC is similar and majority of games are more fussed about IPC than they are about raw thread count. Theyre also all going to be on the same socket so all the motherboard features start become outdated at the same time too. One of my previous rigs was a 3rd gen i5, it wouldnt have mattered if i had bought a 3rd gen i7 instead because i still wouldnt have DDR4 support, m.2 support and with the same clockspeed the difference in FPS is minimal. So i wouldve upgraded around the same time anyway.
This is the second one of your videos that I have watched and already I'm a massive fan of your content. Agree. A cheap PSU will cost you more in the long run and may very well burn your house down. With cases, the problem I have with the really cheap ones, is that they usually have a very rough finish (meaning you cut yourself a lot on them) and no quality of life features like drive trays or cable management. Usually, spending just like $50 more can get you something that's way more easier to work with.

@@brianlempa I do not know what you are saying. 128gb is already a thing. We only have to wait for technology to evolve until 256gb is a new thing. Remember RAM started with like 4kb per slot.
I actually think blind taste tests would be informative for a lot of builders. Essentially have like half a dozen builds of different configurations under cloaks and have people try all the systems with various tasks to rank them and see what people actually like, dislike, notice, don't notice, etc.
It’s a specific case, but Escape from Tarkov definitely benefits from 32GB of RAM. Also with the number of people Twitch streaming or capturing, RAM overhead is more important than in the past for most people. But the speed rule definitely makes sense to this day.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I actually stream, record (running a 16 channel digital studio mixer), play music, Discord and game all at the same time on two monitors. In which case a person needs much more RAM than 16 GB. HOWEVER, if you are not one of these people- 16-32GB is more than adequate. And if all you do is surf the web and watch UA-cam videos (like most Apple fans lol), you don't even need 16GB of RAM.
Buy a new monitor, at 1440p it's really hard to bottleneck by the CPU. I have a ryzen 5 5600x and running Rise of the Tomb Raider at 1440p high settings uses 5 to 15% CPU and 99% of my GTX 1080 graphics card. I don't think the processor will be a problem anytime soon.

What with the chip shortage, I just did kind of the opposite. I bought everything except the GPU at a level that can handle a few more generations, then bought a $150 used RX 560. I'm not a terribly heavy-duty gamer, so it'll do pretty much what I need it to do for the next couple of years, and I can live with a somewhat slower framerate.
I have the same plan. Though a friend of mine gave me the tip AMD Ryzen 5 5600G which is a processor with an integrated graphic---thing. But then I red about what's so great about Ryzen it's partly because it has more cores, so it can game while recording, while discording, while youtubing 50 tabs, while tamaguchi, while etc... so now I want more cores than the 5600G's six cores, but no 8 cores has an integrated graphic-thingy so maybe... uhm... I'll just take a nap and be happy that I found this video, saving me on ram money. ^^
10:10 Yes I agree lmao, but I think the only possible exception is with intensive flight simulators like DCS world (2.7 specifically). While the recommended minimum is 16gb with 32 for heavy mission, I've found that 24 does me just fine. But if you do intensive stuff on flight sims, 32 is probably excusable.
well if u game + stream with amd graphics + record + are on chrome believe me u'll need 32gig. Took just in case i need them so i don't need to up them until ddr5.
DCS multiplayer is also notoriously heavy on RAM. I basically run it at 95% or higher RAM usage with my 16GB. The 8GB of VRAM is obviously also maxed out, at medium isch settings :)
Hey Jayz, thanks for the post. perhaps one way to look at it is to split the budget in rough % for each component eg 50-60% for GFX, 25-30%% for cpu, 10-15% for memory ( or whatever ) and 35% for mobo. that may give us a way to balance the budget on a scalable value build. it would give us a rough framework for a 500-1500 dollar build on the main 4 components. Just some thoughts
That adds up to 120-140% but I get your point... Which is different from the video's point: independent of budget, spend sensibly on the least important parts, THEN spend the rest on the GPU. More budget doesn't mean to spend more on the mainboard.
Great video. However there is one important point you never mention - noise. The only reason I am willing to pay an extra 100$ for a GPU is because at similar performance, the 3-fan high tier graphics card can make a huge difference in noise reduction compared to a standard edition...same goes for CPU heatsink, I always allow money from my budget towards it. Anyone else agree or am I the only one who can't stand playing PC next to a vaccum cleaner?? 🤔😆
I spend 5€ more for a asrock b450 pro4 and all the difference is a 2nd m.2 slot via sata i think. Totally fine. Only the bios is nit as nice ase the high tier ones

Getting the 1080ti when it was on top of the heap in 2017, I really though I would regret the 8600k purchase. 4 years on and saving $150 not getting the i7 was a great choice. That $150 saved kept me on budget even with the 1080ti purchase. Honestly had I not purchased the reverb G2 I would still be happy with my 2017 build for 4K gaming. As a result of my obsession with VR, I was recently forced to buy a prebuilt to get my hands on the 3070. I wanted a 3080 for the Reverb G2, but $2000 for a GPU isn’t happening. I ended up with a Lenovo Legion 7i desktop with a 10700k and RTX 3070. I passed my 1080ti/8600k build down to my son. After testing the 3070 with the 8600k and trying THE 1080TI with the 10700k, I don’t see much of a performance boost from the 10700k over the 8600k. Had I been able to get my hands on the 3080 at retail, not sure I would have needed to moved on from the 8600k. The only area I disagree with Jay is the amount of RAM. I do agree that 3000MHz is the sweet spot for speed. If you are a 4K or VR gamer, especially running flight or racing sims, 32 GB is certainly a nice thing to have. Not that I ever use 32GB, but I certainly get into the low 20GB range for RAM usage. If you have 16GB, Windows may only be using 12GB as it has to reserve the last 4 for the OS to run. I upgraded to 32GB last year and what a difference. Not necessarily a big difference in FPS, but in the simulators I had far less stuttering and lag with 32GB. The extra $80 to go from 16 to 32GB of RAM was a far better investment than the seemingly useless upgrade going from the 4 year old 8600k to the 10700k.
Im so grateful for videos like this because I dont have anyone I can talk to personally about this stuff so this is definitely helping me understand certain things better but If I'm being honest I'm still really Confused and lost about alot of things like what motherboard I should get past making sure its compatible but whats the difference between that one or the one that's $100 more or what power supply is needed for what or What fans and how many are needed.. There is so much I need to learn and I'm Trying not to get frustrated or overwhelmed but it's so hard not to.. Need to just stick with it because I Dont wanna rush into buying anything till I Know what's what and how to get the most out of what I have to spend..

I am literally holding myself from buying NVIDIA 16 series or AMD RX 580s that are $210 -$350 rtn. I guess it's worth it to wait until they go below $200 or AT LEAST BASE PRICE. I can't wait for New Years Deals.
Good points! I learned something new about memory from your video! About two years ago I built my 1st and only budget gaming PC: Ryzen 5 2600, ASRock B450 Pro4 motherboard, RX 570, 16GB (2 sticks of 8GB) of Ram, 650 Watt PSU, 60Hz 1440p IPS 5ms responce rate Asus monitor. Since then, I upgraded my GPU to 5700 XT because games such as Resident Evil remakes would stutter even with good average frames per second, which was puzzeling. New hardware is great, but until I have more problems running any software, I am not going to upgrade. If I had to upgrade, I would update my motherboard BIOS & upgrade the CPU to 3600 or 5600X.
"...More performance and FPS up until about 3000 RPM" at which point Performance Boost Overdrive hits full spool with Nitrous and Vtec all the way up to your CPU's ~5000 RPM redline for massive top-end gains, ensuring the FASTEST 1320 times in your Need for Speed Underground career mode possible. The symmetrical AMD system with its low center of gravity ensures maximum grip on slippery surfaces and results in superior launch times - and if you decide to go with the dual clutch memory, the shifting is even faster with the 7 nanosecond response time. Of course, in order to get the most out of all of this as possible, be sure to enable DOCP (Dual Overhead Cam Profiles), otherwise you'll just sit there "spinning your tires", as they say.

Speedy storage actually does matter but again, I'm sure there's an art to spending appropriate vs ridiculous in the same vein as a motherboard.
this one is no brainer... who builds PC with HDD instead of SSD in last 3-4 years...
You abosolutelly need a SSD for your OS. Tho if you can afford, installing only SSDs is ideal.

Hey can one of you answer a really easy question
I want to build my own but one thing im confused about is what do i do about the OS?
Like if i buy a PRE-BUILT pc then windows comes already installed
But if i build my own from the ground up how do i get windows on there without having to buy it separately?
Thank you for coining the term "forward-facing compatibility" :)
It's much more accurate and sounds logical.
Well jayz cost 1400 and it's not even got RGB.

What I wouldn't cheap out on is power supply (good quality) and case (good airflow)
But with cases you can't get any better airflow than "completely unobstructed airflow", i.e. no case, which is free.

It’s a specific case, but Escape from Tarkov definitely benefits from 32GB of RAM. Also with the number of people Twitch streaming or capturing, RAM overhead is more important than in the past for most people. But the speed rule definitely makes sense to this day.

Great video, thanks for looking out for the new builders out there. Video card is definitely where to spend the extra money. Spend a few more dollars in quality for other parts. I.e., cheap power supplies can cause you to have a real bad day. Overspending is different than finding a good quality product and not cheaping out. RGBs and case choice are relatively cheap and give you a chance to add some character to your build. Having said that, I see some ridiculously priced RGB and $500 cases, neither of which are necessary. Spend $100-$150 on a quality case and deck it out with reasonably priced lighting/fans.
Busted the bank on my first build in 2005. I now buy one step above what I need and typically don’t find myself needing to overclock the GPU or RAM. Bought a 1080ti and 8600k in 2017 and I finally found the right balance between price and performance. I frequently upgraded prior to my 2017 build and had overspent on CPUs for years.
I've been delaying buying a new computer for a long time, now I finally get financially comfortable to buy something really powerful and there's no parts available!
I always scavenge through the Newegg deals. I've built a whole pc from doing this, you just gotta be patient.
How long did it take to get all the parts together?

About to build my first PC since 2015, appreciate the refresher!

Thanks for all the great info! Really helping me keep my build in budget!

9:31 As Paul’s Hardware calls DOCP: Damn it, over clock, please!
"...More performance and FPS up until about 3000 RPM"
at which point Performance Boost Overdrive hits full spool with Nitrous and Vtec all the way up to your CPU's ~5000 RPM redline for massive top-end gains, ensuring the FASTEST 1320 times in your Need for Speed Underground career mode possible.

Never realized how similar the technologies are. Myself, I've always called a computer case the chassis.
Really needed this video becuz i was going to buy and build my own pc tomorrow. This was actually really helpful.
You can always follow prebuilt's cheap out component list:
