Just the implication that no one’s actually covered what the “gameplay” of the Metaverse is actually like for themselves like a year after launch is hilarious
God the thing that gets me about that Zuck clip is that he sounds so *defensive* about the slip up. It clearly wasn't a planned joke and he couldn't even play it off as one. He backpedaled so hard.
Generally when you find yourself falling victim to a long running joke you can do two things: embrace it and play into it, like the bands Laibach and Rammstein have with people frequently mistaking them for fascists, or ignore it, as is usually the case. Zuck, being the absolute void of charisma and competence that he is, is trying to do both simultaneously and thus failing extremely hard at both.
In that sense it's like saying "We'll send a man to the moon before 2100" and then wrapping yourself in firecrackers in the hopes of beating Neil Armstrong.
Seriously, Zuckerberg is trying to reinvent the wheel by literally making a wheel. He is wasting money on a product that already exists and is somehow worse than the existing version which had a significantly smaller budget.

@@Shcreamingreen Well, the good part is that nobody seems to be really buying into it. That particular program/world/whatever is doing spectacularly badly, about as badly as it's possible for a "social" app of its type to do, while being utterly outclassed by things like VRChat (which is free) in every way. On top of that, there's the fact that people are totally used to the now traditional "likes" system used basically everywhere now. I suspect many will be totally baffled and appalled by the idea that they have to pay actual money JUST to give likes in this setting, when absolutely every other service/site/whatever doesnt have such a stupid concept in it. This whole thing is an example of one of these companies finally overstaying their welcome, during a time when people are slowly getting more and more fed up with this type of nonsense. And all this taking place in a space only accessible by a technology that most cannot use yet! What a ridiculous idea. Here's hoping that it continues to fail.

They have tip jars, of course, but there. is. ab-so-lute-ly no. WAY paying for applause would work. It'd kill it!
The absolute audacity for Facebook to put billions into this thing that looks like it has a budget of $100, and then have a comedy club where you have to pay Facebook to award applause points to the comedian.
Yea fr! I thought it would be like “it’s amazing, but playing it means you basically give over all your data even more than regular Facebook” but this game just kinda sucks
The fact that if you get enough points you get a free shirt has to be the biggest slap of em all, like, give the person the cash the audience spent to buy something they actually like, maybe? But no it's Fuckerberg he wouldn't give people money.
As far as we know, they didn't put billions into this. They put billions into the whole ecosystem, which includes acquiring multiple game studios, R&D and production of multiple HMDs, production of dozens of games and apps, etc etc. Horizons was just a fraction of this.
This looks the same as two years ago when I tried Oculus ( it was the next gen thing back then) minus that wrist gadget. My set is catching mites... somewhere. In retrospect, I regret wasting that money, and implicitly giving Sucker some benefit from my data. Paid applause... that is a new low
My faith in humanity has officially been revived after seeing us topple over multi-million dollar corporations. And we did it by making fun of them. What an interesting world.
The best part of the whole comedy club bit is realizing that there's a strong possibility that at least some of the other people there were on-the-clock Meta devs.
Like, I know its a meme for a good reason, but actually seeing in person that this 15 *billion* dollar project literally doesn't have legs is something else.
I'm genuinely curious as to where that $15 billion went. If you threw that much money at any developer, at SOME point there would be some kind of functional gameplay. I'm assuming it went into making the engine it runs on and the hardware and research going into the hardware but I have absolutely 0 clue.
Considering that VR chat was free and had legs and is ALREADY kind of the metaverse the they were trying to promise in the original trailer with the alternate robot skin. I really don't understand why they didn't just use that $15 billion to just buy VR chat
I'm guessing that there's more to this than just being a game - e.g. data aggregation, scraping etc... something to help pivot away from the FB model and get first movers advantage in a potentially untapped industries, although still not quite sure why having those features in a video game would cost $15b
@@popnfreshz the video game isn’t the main point, if they were only spending money on this it would probably look a lot better. People just think this video game is all Meta is working on because it’s what comes to mind when you hear “metaverse”.
Honestly, this game even fails at that. Going Under is a BETTER corporate art style game and the dev's are intentionally satirical about the corporate liminal, silicon valley, cryptocurrency, techbro, business start up bro, fake guru, anti-union, barista side job subjects as a procedural generated level rogue lite a la Enter the Gungeon.
Coming from someone who's been deep in both recroom and horizons creator community's, recroom acts way more corporate. Honestly the metaverse is not done at all but if you're in the community you can see how quickly it's developing. So right now not the most marketable thing ever but coming from someone who's been in the vr space for 5 years it's the only game making a push and starting to make progress. Like even on the commission end of things people will actually pay artists fairly as opposed to recroom where a kids like "i can pay $20 for an entire world". Personally I see a lot of potential and I think it'll be on top in about 2-3 years as a social/creative vr space for adults.
Something really notable about this is the total lack of mirrors. VRChat is full of them because the developers correctly realized that people like to have a way to look at their own avatars and other people with you. Meanwhile in facebookland you get to see yourself in the avatar selector and a very very tiny phone screen and that’s it. There’s no consideration given to what people actually want to do
That’s because VRChat allows avatars to be created out of anything so long a 3D model exists for it, here they’re intending you make an avatar that looks like yourself and I doubt you’re as focused at looking into a mirror irl
I can't even imagine the look on RT's face when those guys started buying applauses for him with real money and when he said "no, it's not worthy!!" they replied with "we're supporting Zuckerberg with it" 😭
Left FB over three years ago and haven't desire to return. They actually owe me £200 for an advertising campaign that they took from my account over ten years ago without my authority but they never got back to my complaint In person, and because you can't deal with people, I left the platform. I also have no desire to see what people are "updating" in their profiles and this game doesn't appeal to me AT ALL. I also reported a human trafficking post, which was found to not be against their community standards, but the next day was put into FB prison for sharing info in groups, so when a website allows the sale of 14 year old girls on live FB video and not the sharing of educational text information , I was fully aware by then that FB, is probably one of the worst platforms on the planet.

That was the single most horrific thing I’ve ever witnessed in my life. What a horrible dystopian nightmare. Facebook is done, it’s over rename yourselves MySpace. Dude they could have just bought Star citizen for a billion and tried to make the universe in that.

I honestly feel relieved about the poor reaction to this thing. Today I watched furries use sign language in VR Chat and someone fail at picking up a microphone without legs in the Metaverse
Never underestimate the ingenuity and get-shit-done spirit of the furry community. Furries get results.
The sign language in VR thing is fucking incredible actually, saw that too and it is stellar how silly little fox furries contribute so much with so much work to keep a community interesting and working smoothly for everyone

I see that Zuck is boldly going where no one else has gone before; adding player collision to an MMO.
The forbidden feature! Known since the internet
This has likely been done to try to prevent harassment which unfortunately does happen in VR because it is on the internet we all know the kind of people who can be found on the internet.
But if you add collision you allow harassers to restrict your freedom of movement. In the end it gives them power the best way to handle something like that is to give users an option to create a personal space level which will render anyone invisible if they try to come closer.
Warhammer Online had player collision though
POOLS CLOSED

The underrated 'you have to buy applause credits' sounds so dystopian...
I love how a company whose constantly steals their users data still couldn't figure it out what they wanted
You can almost feel the panic on some random intern at Facebook when the message "someone is playing the metaverse" popped up on their screen.
Even worse, someone was live-streaming it. To people.
😆😆😆
One of the marketing blurbs was "You can do everything you normally do online, but in the metaverse"
Now I don't know what Zucc's version of the internet looks like, but the overwhelming majority of it is for looking at naked people, picking fights, pretending to kill each other, and cats. Is that all included in the metaverse?
Avatars is fucking ugly, who the hell wants to have sex with these?

This is truly sad because the target audiences are people with low self esteem and people that spend recklessly. That doesn’t help people. Quite the opposite so you get a feel for how much these companies really care about people when it comes down to it.
Companies in general don't care for the people. It's always been about profit. Some are just more covert about it than others.
This game is wonderful. While in other VR games you can set any arbitrary 3d model as your avatar, Facebook decided it would be useful to have built-in body dysmorphia as a feature with its legless creepy limited avatar customization.

Even if some of them did watch it, it wouldn't really change their minds. It takes more than that to decide whether smth can be profitable in a few years or not, especially for experienced players and big companies.
