Someone out there really said "I'm going to take my special interest and my trauma from the marching band and make it into a game" while everyone in the office just stared
A mixture of the trauma and the dream of ever getting to play the melody
This is concert band, not marching band. Marching band only plays marches and rock songs arranged as marches, and involves a lot more movement. Concert band gets to play the better pieces. Though no saxophonist got smacked in the head, so inaccurate to the concert band experience,
@@Tang-qi6zw That might've just been your experience. In my experience, we got to play from a variety of genres, and even had custom pieces arranged for us. As for the "better pieces" being in concert band, my favorite piece I've ever played was a custom arrangement of In The Hall Of The Mountain King, during marching band.

@@Tang-qi6zw my HS marching band had themed shows (myan/sun worship, aliens, wolves) all with melodies from various related pieces. Mixed with choreography. There's even competitions. Your marching band experience really depends on how much funding your program can get.

@@BlackTecno2 I was ill with something during one of my band outings. I was 2nd trumpet and couldn't even hit a high D. My band director shut me down mid orchestration and made me sit at rest with my trumpet on my knee the entire 14 minute piece after I fucked up a slur. Pretty sure my body temp was too high for me to give a damn, but it was embarrassing after.
As a bassist, I sympathize DEEPLY with whoever on the development team decided to make Mozart the final boss.

"There are between 2 and 4 spiders living inside the average trombone" factoid is actually a statistical error. Average trombone contains 0 spiders. Spiders Georg, who eats 10,000 spiders a day and keeps them all inside of his extensive trombone collection, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.

It's the revenge of the tromboners, they never get to play the melody even though it's always the best part. Always made me sad back when I played trombone as a kid

You say this but I bet you there are a bunch of musicians out there who decided to set their minds to figure out how Melodys went for songs that their instrument was not featured in (example: me. I was that musician. I have a notebook full of me trying to figure out the notes bc I didn’t want to look up/pay for the song book XD)

I feel like this game, on top of being a meta game about games, is also a meme game about hard it is to make a rhythm game for a wind instrument since they can only play one note at a time.

@@jman7418 They're not joking. Wind instruments can generally only play one note at a time. There are some techniques to get two notes on certain instruments, but they're really hard to pull off.

@@dogehkiindogeborn5339 yeah but you can still learn it, it's a lot of muscle memory. what makes it kinder is that it looks like the "good" equal keeps the combo going, as some games don't, and most rhythm games WILL cut you off mid-song if your tension meter drops to 0. games that let you keep going are good since you can still learn the muscle memory instead of just being yeeted back to the menu.

As someone who took the trombone for my grade 9 music class, I can confirm this is what playing the trombone is like. It's actually scary how accurate they got it

Especially the the fear of finding out the song is really fast and you're pretty sure it's physically impossible to slide from one end to the other so quickly. I once as a kid accidentally threw my slide across the room because I lost control

Fun fact: as a joke, Punchy did a speedrun of this game. Unfortunately, the song that gives the best toots-to-time ratio is God Save the King so most of that speedrun is repeatedly playing that song.

I’ve played trombone for 8 years and this game is 100% accurate to how playing trombone feels.

It's hard to believe there's anything funnier than the long silence in Zarathustra between the notes, the anticipation, long awaited notes highlighting the masterpiece, and it's just fart sounds. Absolutely brilliant

I feel like the big flaw in it is how you have to wildly flail up and down the entire screen every 3 seconds.
Guitar Hero works cuz you press the button on the remote to change the note.
With this. You need to fling the mouse back and forth and nail the exact positioning to actually get the notes right
i bet we could easily make this game playable on-the-go as well! just put all the sound-making into the controller and write down the notes for the songs on sheets of paper
@@kharnthebetrayer8251 Actually, a trombone controller would make it much easier, probably. It would allow for more reliable muscle memory, which is what trombonists rely on for each slide position. A mouse moves in 2 axes, which makes precise positioning more difficult in this type of game, where only 1 axis is required. That’s why a trombone controller is probably much better.

Weird fact and my only claim to fame; my grandfather was one of the best trombone players ever. Literally, he's played Royal Albert Hall multiple times, won the international championships 4 times in a row and was even featured on a George Harrison song.

This is actually very accurate to trombone playing. Just playing random notes, hoping the teacher doesn't look directly at your slide and sees that you aren't playing the right notes

I feel like this game perfectly re-creates the feeling anyone in junior high or highschool band had when the director handed out a new song and you got your sheet music and went... 'oh god no that's way to fast I'm going to die' then you get to the section for the first time and everyone panics and it was pure chaos

As someone who played the trombone back in 8th grade, I can confirm this feeling.
It's the same when your instrument is voice, and you get a piece with a ton of intricate runs. In a large chorus it's not too bad--if you can't get it then you hit the main notes and just go silent and keep moving your mouth the rest of the time. But when it's a group with only a couple people on each part, well... let's just say it's noticeable.

@@laras678 I don't know complex choral music never gave me as much fear as a complex piece of flute music, I'd rather have to intentionally singing discordant notes that clash with the other notes because it's a crunchy piece than have to play some of the fast sheet music we got in band.(our school choir was barely large enough to actually classify as a choir but I also went to a provincial choir once a year for like four years until I aged out of that group and that choir was fucking massive)

There's a reason why band kids' favorite game is "One time at band camp"
Trombones are possibly the most cultish of all the band sections and end up being the focus point for many of the funniest stories.
As a tromboner, I can 100% confirm this
Trombones are the most cultist because it’s possibly the hardest instrument to play (besides percussion). Everyone else gets the luxury of playing their notes with valves that are all nice and close together where all you need to move is your fingers. While us tromboners in the back are all doing a full arm routine jacking our instruments off and praying that we are in the right positions to hit the notes.
It’s funny watching this as someone who uses to play trumpet in a brass band, with a friend who played trombone, because I’ve played a lot of these pieces. The greatest reward for my many years of playing is a quote from my trombone playing friend, “I picked up the trombone because playing the slide bits is fun - it’s the best part about playing trombone. However, it’s also the only good part about playing trombone.”
Can we take a moment to appreciate Dan's rhythm skills? There was an entire one hour long video on why he was bad at playing rhythm games, but he has really improved

And this is why trombones are not the instruments carrying the melody in anything. Not even in their classic song. (And the reason Stars and Stripes forever was impossible was because you were playing the notes for both the flute and brass parts at points, which is... terrifying.)
I remember one time in high school we played a symphonic band arrangement of an orchestra film score and for some reason they gave the bass trombone part the string section. So that was fun constantly jumping up and down two octaves between sixteenth notes.
I very much disagree with this comment, trombones being given the melody for anything is fine so long as they are given time and have no 1-5 repeat sixteenths, all it needs is practice to get it down. My highschool band’s low brass section is the best simply because they practice their instruments because of how much they need to practice to sound good. Other instruments simply believe they are good enough to play it and therefore aren’t given any vital parts because they don’t care enough to practice

Another little know fact is that the Timpani originated with Tim Panini, he wanted to create a drum you could tune because he couldn't tuna fish, and after created the world famous sandwich: the Grilled Cheese, he found out that by adding his names together (but removing the last ni since the Knights no longer say "ni") he created the Timpani
This game feels like several completely different games at once and I absolutely love it
Cloe did such an incredibly job editing this to make it even funnier than it actually was. The well-timed zooms made me laugh EVERY time. This is one of my new favorite RT videos
I never thought a game could so perfectly emulate the feeling of being in a high school marching band playing Stars and Stripes forever. That dogfight was *shockingly* accurate.

The best part is that even when Dan hits the note on screen, it still sounds out of tune
If you compare the beginning of the video to the end, it's incredible how quickly Dan picks up and learns games.
This game reminds me of those flash puzzles where you need to navigate your mouse cursor through a maze, except here its at speed and to rhythm.

after playing this game for myself, the amount of marching songs in it really indicates to me that the dev played trombone in band class and was always envious of everyone else who got to play the melody, so he designed the game so the trombone could play the melody instead
the best part of this was watching as a trombone player and listening to rt go “this would be impossible to play in real life” and then it’s something you could play in middle school
out of all games that released this year, this is definetly the most trombone related out of all of them

As a tromboner who has played trombone for 5ish years, and who has played Stars and Stripes Forever, I'm glad that the difficulty of the part at 11:04 is well represented. That shit gave me ptsd as a freshman in high school. Honestly can't wait for mods for this, I personally hope that my fellow marching band and pep band friends will mod in some of those tunes and see how they translate into this wonderful monstrosity of the trombone experience.

As a university level trombone player, I hate to say that these songs are all relatively doable at the high-school/secondary school level. And although humorous, glissandos are actually rare for trombones to play as not many composers include them in their music

@@qwertyram4598 In basic terms, it's where you go from one of the 7 positions and move it to another one of the positions without tonging making it once continuous note. There's more to it but that's the idea.
@@qwertyram4598 easier way to think of it, when a strings player on a violin is playing one note with one stroke and slides to another mid stroke intentionally, so there's no pause or break. It's just a slide.

This game is quite litterally the darksouls of rhythm games with that intro/ending and homage to the 2 heads in DS1

I genuinely like how the game has a no-frills menu for people who want to, as much as they can, take the gameplay seriously. The line between joke game and serious game is thinning with speedrun culture and the like, so it's a smart choice.

I played flute for 11 years and played many of these songs. Even if it's harder, I like that they put the game flowing right to left because the notes move up/down like they would on a musical staff.
Which is also a little weird because on a trombone the further out the slide is, the lower the note. If played with a mouse, I'd assume the lower notes would be near the top as you'd be sliding the mouse further away from you.

God, I remember when I started the end game and thought I needed 10 S ranks. I grinded those suckers out until my eyes hurt and it turned out you needed 10 god damn cards. I was /so/ disheartened
