I turned 5 years old on April 14th, 1955. I remember getting up that morning and my mom said "Goodness, gracious, sakes alive, don`t you think you`re big now you are five." Big day for me and your intake manifold. And the Titanic and Abraham Lincoln.
Hello Don! Very nice find..most get thrown out.. You would appreciate my 56 150 utility sedan..used 10 years in Northern CA by Pacific Bell to deliver phone books to my house growing up..I bought it from the shop that serviced it from 1966 to 1976 and it is now in my garage in Las Vegas..it's hot rodded with an L-78 BBC..six speed and 69 Chevelle 12 bolt rear end with vintage Alson Ladder bars. Living in Sonoma County we had a lot of cruising 4th Street in Santa Rosa just north of Petaluma where American Graffiti was filmed..back in the 70s..LOL
Very nice collection you have ,I have 1956 engines 3 completely with power glide Tran , corvette valve cover 4 set and I keep collecting parts ,have a nice day
Hey Big Dog! Yeah man you just can't beat the older cars I love all the early stuff they have! It's like a hunt to find that certain part! Have a good one and drink a cold one for me👍
@@donshotrodgarage1717if the brass tag on the carburetor is dated April 1955 doesn't that prove the early style carburetor air cleaner combination ran a little longer than you previously thought of February?
That's totally cool Don I did not know about that carb guess this old dog learned something new, what a find, it's always great to watch your videos later buddy Happy Halloween Tony
Don, its always makes for an awesome day when you can score those old original parts that are getting harder an harder to find that one can afford. Great score my friend. I'm the same way when it's a cold rainy gloomy cool day, its nape time alot of the times. You know what though, when your all rested, you can walk out to your hot rod garage an all your toys are still right where you left them. Great video an info. Have a super awesome week my friend. 😁👍👍
Thanks Richard! I'm so excited to get this piece and add it to the car. I plan to have the original Bell Crank rebuilt and use the pair on the car. The gloomy cold rainy weather will put you right to sleep!! Have a good one Buddy 👍
At one time I had 2dt. post 210 57 with a 265 in it...I had a oil filter on the block just like the 283... 57 was the last year for the 265... Over the years a long time ago I have had over 12 57's...
Hey BW! Yeah man I'm excited to have it and hope to get the Bell Crank carb rebuilt. Nice to see all the little pieces of what started Chevy Performance! Have a good one Buddy 👍
Don. if you remember my first car was a 55 2dr hardtop 265 power Pack 3 speed on the tree. It had that exact same air cleaner on it. One of the first things I added was a chrome air cleaner from the Honest Charlie catalog. I remember I put it back on when I traded it in on a 58. I am not trying to correct you but, the stud may be correct but the wing is not I have an original wing nut and it has a blended washer at the bottom. Outstanding find Don.
Great comment Edward! I do remember you saying your first car was a 55 Chevy Hardtop. That's pretty dang cool you bought the air cleaner from Honest Charlie, haven't heard that in a while. Also pretty sweet you put the original air cleaner back on when you sold it. I enjoyed the comment Buddy
Heck yeah Mr Tri 5 Don , Heck of a fine there , Man hope you can the carburetor rebuild that would be awesome. . Yeah Don this weather is crazy around here too, Went Fall trout fishing it about 50 degrees at night and 70 plus degrees in the day that's crazy stuff around around the area i think u got 1 of the Nomads u got Elkins WV . Have a good one Bud 👍✌️
Hey Lonnie! Yeah man I love leaning the little details of these cars. The weather sure does such around here right now. Yes my red 55 nomad come from Elkins WV. Have a great week
They call them heads power pack, but there is nothing power pack about them other than they have a small combustion chamber. The real power pack heads came on the 327's. 461 & 462's. They run great on the 283 and probably on the 265. The cast iron 300 hp 327 intake is really good to put on a 265 or 283 engine. Had an AFB carb and has bigger ports than the 265 or 283 intakes it was like a high riser over the stock 4 barrel intake on the 283. One of the best stock cams to put in either engine was the GM 327-350 hp hydraulic cam. I know because I had all the things I talked about on my 283 and it was pretty fast back in those days! Had the old three speed stick trans and a 3.55 gear and had 3.70 rear gear at one time. Later I put a 4 speed munci in my 57 wagon...
I hear exactly what your saying. Now we are talking about 1956 heads which would be the very first Powerpak head with very small combustion chamber! These was really decent heads for the time. Now in 1962 the 327 was introduced and I do believe the introduced the camel hump head which is the 461 casting number you mention. Powerpak and camel hump heads are to different heads! I agree the camel hump heads will run much stronger than a powerpak head. I have a 1955 265 power pak which did not offer a powerpak head, I had 1956 306 casting powerpak heads built for the engine to help the engine hp over a stock 55 powerpak engine. Have a good one Buddy 👍
Man Don that’s a rare find right there! I’ve never seen one in person myself, actually just saw one for sale online for 1500 bucks, that’s gonna be one good looking engine, glad you like the valve covers!!
Thanks Dan! I've been chasing one of these air cleaners for a long time. Just can't see spending $1500 on one of them. I'm lucky to have found this one and it was just a few hours away. I love the valve covers and really appreciate you! Have a good one Buddy 👍

Don you do a Awesome job of tracking down these rare items Always and I can appreciate your knowledge and love of these cars, and I love your videos of yours and your approach to your Tri Fives 🏆
Wow Big Don, that is a rare find, does it have to have that carburetor to run it, and will you be running it on one of the engines , talk soon buddy 😀😀
Thanks Mike! I believe I can run the newer style 55 carb on it. I'll be running that air cleaner on my 55 ragtop. The carb and intake in the video are original off my 55 265 engine. Have a good one Buddy 👍
Very early in the 55 production run. The air filter goes right along with the carb linkage. It’s funny that those 4 barrels came out in 1952-3 and none ever appeared to operate from the rear shaft like the early production 55 Chevrolet.
Yeah man I've just seen them in pics never seen one in person. I would assume most got tossed in the trash can at the drag strip in late 1954! Later Buddy
Big Don, I like and agree with your opinion about the 55 V8! I think Chevy’s next step in the hot rod world was the 57 - 283 fuel injected engine. They were very rare and you may know more about that than I do. I love your knowledge and the intake, carb & air cleaner. I hope that 2218 carb can be rebuilt!
Thanks Don! Yes there next real step at performance was the fuel injection 283. 1956 had a dual four barrel setup and later in the year offered a more aggressive camshaft making 240hp out of a 265. I think a hot tank will clean up the old carb. Have a good one Buddy 👍
Great find Don! I had never seen this early 4bbl air cleaner either! It is nice that you and Dan both talk and teach about the rare items and options on these great tri-fives! These look like all date coded matches to me! The original sticker is icing on the cake too! Keep up the great work and take care!
Thanks Jeff! Yeah man it's been a pleasure to meet all my Tri5 brothers here on UA-cam. Man has there ever been a car so universal before that is loved by so many! I like to think of you as the West Coast Tri5 guy and kinda learn how it's done out there from you. It's outstanding to be able to find the early Round snout air cleaner and for it to be in such nice original shape. The convertible is coming along and I'm trying to enjoy each step of the way! Have a good one Buddy 👍
i would guess that the assembly manuel maybe only shows the engine assembled with air cleaner on, and no additional information on the notes at the bottom of page of the change of air cleaner. how ever the throttle linkage from the early carb bell crank from bracket to foot lever, and the throttle linkage on later carb would be different in the parts book and there may be information in the description of the two linkages. and hopefully a date. that would give you that much to go on.
Thanks Giveblood! I actually have the different linkage for the Bell Crank carb as well. Thus carb is original and has the April date so I'm quessing it went a little past February! There both very hard to find anymore. Have a good one Buddy 👍

Hey Glenn! Yeah the weather is something this time of year. Your intake will have a casting number and date code on it. I'd say keep it as many original 4 barrel intakes are hard to find anymore. The date code will tell you what year it is. Later Buddy
That’s pretty cool Don and would certainly make the perfect topper for the convert engine! There are carb rebuilders that can make that carb look like new again, would be a bit pricy but think it would be well worth the cost considering the rare linkage and the car it’s doing on. Good score buddy, have a great week!
I believe it to be a Carter. They had the bowl fuel level screws. In that era Rochester were used on higher dollar GM cars but did make it to Chevrolets later. Cadillac replacements for Carters at the dealer ships were Rochesters.
I've been trying to buy a round snout from an old guy for several years. He doesn't sell anything. Hoping to wear him down. Lol. Will that bell crank carb base plate bolt onto your carb? Hopefully the main body will clean up. Do you have the big can of Berrymans to soak the carb in? A couple days and they usually look new. The stink from that stuff is terrible though. Lol
Hey Buddy! Keep working on that guy I'm sure you can pry it away from him. I think the Bell Crank is only for the original carb but I will check into it. I'm going to send it off to Chris Carb shop in Dayton ohio the guy is really good! Hope you end up with that air cleaner man
