    You're right, there is no IBIS, but because of the weight of the camera it's not like shooting on an a6300 with no IBIS which is what a lot of people will be thinking when you talk that negatively about it. Because of the size of the camera and the way it's designed to be held, no IBIS isn't even an issue as long as you don't have Parkinson's Disease. Add a stabilised lens and you won't even notice it. I'd be talking about the horrible rolling shutter on the FS5 before I'd talk about no IBIS but you didn't even mention the rolling shutter which is one of the worst rolling shutters in any cinema camera I've ever worked with
    240fps isn't the max frame rate. You can also shoot in 480fps and 960fps however it crops the sensor.
    A benefit you missed that really should be mentioned - clear image zoom.
    Usually when people compare the GH5 with the FS5 they start to lose credibility in what they're saying. The realisation is the FS5 is more than capable of recording 4:2:2 4K internally but it was restricted due to the fact doing that would cannibalise the FS7 and piss off a lot of people who invested in that camera only to see a camera like the FS5 released that can do just as much for much less. The GH5 is a toy in comparison to the FS5 with one thing and one thing only that it does better.... UHD (not 4K) in 10 bit. That's it! Start listing off the the negatives of the GH5 and we'd be here for days just talking about how it handles low light alone.
    How about the fact that you can send 12 bit 4K Raw 60fps to an external recorder via SDI on the FS5? WiFi streaming? How's the GH5 handle that? Oh lol. Now you're starting to realise the price gap.
    I honestly can't believe you're telling people that if they grade their footage in 8 bit, they're going to encounter a lot of issues with noise. Noise isn't going to be the issue, artefacts are. Maybe. If you push the grade too far... But if you expose your footage correctly the noise will be no different from recording in 10 bit.
    Yes, the official Sony batteries are expensive but you fail to mention the fact that you can get fantastic 3rd party batteries twice the size of the BPU60 for around $100-$150 that you can record on for 2 days straight without charging.
    You think the FS5 handles low light really badly? It doesn't. Again, you just need to learn to expose correctly and then crush the blacks a bit in the grade.
    "nothing over 2500 ISO"? Are you kidding me? 3200 is the native ISO for S-Log on the FS5. *facepalm Of course your a6500 has better low light performance.... it's a mirrorless camera. Mirrorless cameras by reputation have better low light performance than other types of cameras. *second facepalm
    Considering this was uploaded in February I'm really hoping the extra 7 months you've had with the camera you've found all this out for yourself.
    I get that you're trying to grow a channel. I get that all reviewers have their opinions.... but come on man, this is the worst review of an FS5 I've seen on UA-cam... at least deliver facts as well as your opinions. I'm wondering if you even know much about cameras, let alone the FS5.

      I agree 100% this video is extremely misleading.

  • @OMNIFICPICTURES

    I disagree it is a great run and gun camera. You can put a stabilized lens on it it will also go on a Ronin easily. As far as menus, they are deep and pro cameramen will go in and understand the deepness because that is distinctively a huge difference between a DSLR shooter and a Pro Cinema guy or true DP/DOP. I have owned and operated many pro and DS:R cameras over 27 years and this is superior to almost all of them. Low light, I give that to the a7s too, but the a7s is a freak of a camera when you talk about low light. The Dynamic range on both smokes anything in Canon world and the slomo is rich so I find that this rig is amazing. Also a little trick is if you are shooting slomo at 120 and half way stable on a tripod or a gimbal or hand held it will hide some of your body movement, breathing etc. This is in my opinion the best documentary camera for mobility, packability, features (audio a must). Monitoring the audio is a bit of a menu issue and not accessable through a typical dial or button, that sucks. There is no such thing as a perfect camera and each one has strengths and short falls. Really it has to do with what you are doing and if you are serious aboout the craft or a hobbyist. Lastly yes the menus are deep but that means flexibiliy/options. If you don't want to know about the camera or are serious DP don't bother buy a cheaper camera and put it in auto. How ever if you want to know about how to shoot like a DP or a true Cinematographer this camera will teach you as you get to know it. To me it is a cheap camera for what it can do and the variable ND is one feature that smokes everyone as it makes it possible to run around as light sources on doc are unpredisctable. DPs don't rely on autofocus and it works in high light fine if you are using a gimble it can be a perfect partner to a documentarian. You can get shoulder support and buy the 60 or 90 battery or and after market for half the price. Every real cameraman buys more than one battery. When my A camera was a 4k Capable Sony FS700 I bought 5 batteries and two chargers...it lasted forever and the menus are as deep. Great camera and I still use it today for all pro shoots. I have used and owned Canons/Lumix/JVCs also own Sony a6500, a7s etc. This camera is the one I have been waiting for. I love the bigger Sony FS7 Mark II as well but its literally like carrying a wieght and really my choice for FS5 wasn't about price at the time, it was a bout flexibility and the FS7 didn't have the ND trick at the time, also it will make you tired with the beast on the shoulder as FS7 shooters are insecure (also good price) and tend to add as many cinema toy like bigger monitors/4k capture devices, Matt boxes and filter kits etc. Well the digital ND takes away the need for a filter kit ND set with matt boxes. So what is the best camera to use? The one you are using and know how to use, because right now with 1700 burning a whole in your pocket you can get cinematic results if you know how to use your camera. That is the bottum line. For me this camera is the one I have been waiting for in a price range that smokes other cinema rigs and flexible enough to do the party tricks of cameras about and below its pay grade. At the end of the day if you know how to get good picture from a camera your client won’t care what you are using unless they are matching another rig. BEST DOC CAMERA EVER!!!

      Totally agree..I film amongst other shoots, snow sports freestylers, you don't use IBIS on tripods, and as a run and gunner you ust perfect your art, like atti mode with drones, don't blame intelligent modes and gps drop outs, learn to pilot properly. Like blaming a car for not parking itself efficiently .

    The FS5 is one of the cheapest options to output PRORES RAW so when you combine this with an external recorder this camera punches WAY above it's price point.

  • @danieldougan8613

    You can output to an external recorder for 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 now with the FS5.

    I believe you're incorrect about switching to slow motion in a faster way. I'm pretty sure sony cameras including some of the slr but not all of those have an S&Q button that quickly goes to the previously set slow motion of either 60, 120, 240 or whatever.

  • @hv20canon

    Own two FS5. If you team it with the Shogun Inferno you get RAW 12-bit 4:4:4, 4K 120fps. 2K will get you up to 240fps. The FS5 has phantom power XLR ports for shotgun microphones. I also own the A7S, which is an awesome camera for low light, but it has no 60fps capability.
    My verdict is that the FS5 is not worth considering if you don't team it with an external recorder to access all the best features that the FS5 is capable of.

    • @JeremyY

      I agree. Without an external recorders the FS5 is just a kneecapped FS7. This is an additional item that future FS5 owners need to consider and budget for.

      Hey mate, I bought one last week with the RAW, HFR & MPEG Upgrades. I came from using a sony a7sii and I will continue to use it as my 'B' camera. Personally I think it is a perfect camera for video producers / content creators to really step their game. Having built in ND filters and XLR out were the big upgrades for me. 10bit 1080p is perfect for 90% of my shoots then I'll hire an external recorder for 12bit RAW for more cinematic work. Overall because of it's versatility, weight, features and ergonomics this camera already has, and will change my workflow and ability. Perfect for all of the types of work listed above. Overall if you wish to the most out of your talents & skills then this is a fantastic camera for you.

    • @MrLeadbelly1966
      @MrLeadbelly1966 6 років тому +1

      Yes! Also, I believe the FS5 comes standard with an ethernet port, which is great for live streaming capabilities (something that my clients almost always ask for...). Add the 4K/2K RAW upgrades & a nice external recorder, & this is a completely different MOFO of a camera!!!

      Yeah I'd skip it. The FS5 mark 2 isn't much of an improvement over the 1. In fact the FS5 is basically a knee-capped FS7. If you're going to go with a Sony cinecam just pay a bit more and get the FS7. It's the industry standard.

    Jeremy, thanks for your insight about the camera. After these months, did you change any of your opinions? Something to comment about this new trend regarding the fs5 and the atomos combo, flying a prores raw 12bit shoot?

  • @aybee5908
    @aybee5908 6 років тому +3

    I own that beast, too. I use it most time for scenaric-filming. Means manual lenses, follow focus and an external recorder. So it`s most of the time on a tripod or I fly it with a steadycam.
    For me it`s not a run and gun camera, there are few very good ones for run and gun (GH-5 etc.). The follow focus is lot better with a Sony SELP28135G lens (which costs third the price of the camera).
    It`s also a good Broadcast and Docu-Cam.
    I didn`t get you with the slow mo settings. Did you use the outside SQ-knob?

      The FS5 with Sony 16-105 lens is a perfectly good R'n'Gun camera - backed up by a7sII for low light.

    • @aybee5908
      @aybee5908 6 років тому

      This is a lens with very spread quality. Some are ok, some are really bad. If you got a good one, you`re lucky, but the Sony SAL18135 is cheaper and better. Theseadays for me a R`n`Gun camera needs body-stabilisation and Lens-stabilisation (like GH-5?) then you got good results out of hand.

    Love the comment at 7:30 yes thank you! Need to stop all the comparing of DSLRs and camcorders/cinema cameras. They all have a certain place. As for this, I am a education/corporate videographer ( I work for a college so the videos I shoot are a mix of that) and have been using Sony EX1Rs. Right now they have given permission for me to buy 2 new cameras to replace the older ones but only given me a budget of 10k. I would buy a couple GH5's but form factor (shock and awe) is needed for respect (all videos end up in 720p so IQ isn't really big with them) plus long record times. I'm thinking an FS5 and Sony Z150 would do good, but does anyone have any other suggestions? or heard any rumors about new Sony prosumer camcorders coming out in the next 6 months?

    • @JeremyY

    • @cdaSarge
      @cdaSarge 6 років тому

      Jeremy Ying a legit work horse is a definite, I’ll easily be putting hours of recording each week, but the 4K is something for the editing bay that ill want more than need. The big thing is the 10 bit 422, as I do a lot of simple green screen work

    • @JeremyY
      @JeremyY  6 років тому

      Kenny Stokes If I were in your position I'd go for either a GH5s with Atomos Ninja Inferno, or go all out and get the EVA-1. Sure, you could get an FS5 with Atomos but the FS5 is just so expensive, especially considering how old the FS5 sensor is (same sensor as FS700, yikes!). And a C100 is as workhorse-y as it gets and I'd normally recommend it as a rugged workhorse cam, but it only outputs 8-bit, even with an Atomos.

    • @dalestokes2789
      @dalestokes2789 6 років тому

      Would love to get a GH5/s but need that full feature set of a camcorder unfortunately. Also the 2 cameras is a non-negotiable, definitely need two for the work I do. And wireless control is a must on one of them as I am a one man band. lol maybe I'm just looking for that perfect camera everyone is looking for. Oh well, maybe I'll get lucky and Sony will show a FS5 mkii or new full sized camcorder with better sensor tech in the next six months.

    I’m glad I watched this because I was planning to purchase this, but my primary use is run and gun, verite documentary. So the lack of stabilization is a deal breaker. What would you recommend instead of the fs5? Fyi, I want a camera with xlr inputs built in. Thanks!!!

    • @JeremyY
      @JeremyY  5 років тому

      Canon C100 mk2. Sure, the FS5's specs on paper are "better" but I now own the C100 and like it a lot more as a run-gun camera than the FS5. Reasons: C100's menus are much easier to navigate, which is important when you're filming on the run. Better battery life, so I don't have to worry about my camera going dead. Smaller file sizes (while still having great image quality), so I can transfer my footage to laptop/external HD so much faster. And much nicer colours, which means faster turnaround times. C100 mk2 wins, no contest.

      Any person I know who has an FS5 doesn't even bother using the autofocus. Too unreliable. Looking back, I wouldn't consider the FS5 for doc work. It's more of a cinema camera not only because the lousy AF, but also because footage will always need colour correction. If you don't need 4K consider getting a C100 Mark2. Amazing footage right out of the camera, with incredible autofocus.

      I agree! A C100mk3 with 4K output with the dual-pixel AF at that price range would be incredible. But I feel like it's unlikely because Canon obviously wants to protect its C300 line. Heck, maybe Sony's doing the same thing to protect the FS7 line. It really is a shame.

      @baubergo 6 років тому

      Jeremy, I didn't know you sold it for a GH5. The autofocus in the FS5 is worst than GH5 contrast autofocus? I know it's not close to canon dpaf, but I was thinking it sits between dpaf and gh5, not worst than gh5. What about the things you lost like built in ND filters, didn't this bother you?

    • @JeremyY
      @JeremyY  6 років тому

      After the latest update, the GH5 and FS5 autofocus are almost on-par with each other. Every FS5 owner I've ever met just never relies on the AF- just like every GH5 owner. Losing built-in ND filters does suck. But when I look at how overpriced the FS5 is I still don't think that the extra ~$3000 premium it charges isn't worth built-in ND.
      Also my FS5 had shockingly-bad resale value. I'll talk more about than in my next video.

    Hi Jeremy. I hope I can take a moment of your time and run something by you. I've got an FS5 Mark I and am new to the device. The firmware is up-to-date. I'm having an issue with a Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC lens. The MC-11 mount converter firmware is up-to-date; unsure about the lens though. I don't have the Sigma USB Dock, so there's no way to tell what the lens firmware is.
    The issue on the FS5 is the Autofocus feature is unusable; it doesn't Zoom. The lens motor makes a slight noise, but no movement.
    The following message appears on the viewfinder: "Cannot execute functions because of the condition of the lens." The lens contacts are super clean.
    Have you encountered or heard of such an issue before? Is there a setting in an incorrect position? Is there a remedy? I've chatted with folks at Sigma, and they're looking into it.
    Thanks for your time. Hakan

    • @JeremyY
      @JeremyY  6 років тому

      Hi Hakan. First thing to check would be the lens firmware, so even though you don't have a Sigma USB dock I'd recommend dropping by a small, independent-owned camera store and ask them if they can ID your firmware version for you. But in all seriousness it's best to buy the dock. I know that it sucks to spend more $$, but it also sucks to be stuck with a busted lens. Also, that error message is known to appear when you have the FS5 set to auto-iris + have an adapted lens attached via adapter. What setting do you have for the iris?

    • @Beantownreview
      @Beantownreview 6 років тому

      I'm going to contact Hunt's Photo & Video tomorrow and see what they can do. The lens and mount converter are new loaner samples from Sigma so I haven't purchased this lens. I didn't think of asking for the dock as I assumed the lens would be up top date. The converter wasn't up-to-date when I received it, but now it is.
      The Iris is at 1.8. I disabled the Full Auto button so there's no "A" in front of the value. FYI With the Full Auto button lit, the image is clearer. The T&W still don't work. The on-board microphone picks up the lens motor sound, which sucks. I've read that some users with metabones adapters had the same warning.

      That certainly sounds like a pain. I'd be curious to know if it's a lens firmware issue, so please post an update once you've stopped by Hunt's. And best of luck with this issue.

      @@hesamjafari9738 I'd get the GH5s. FS5 has terrible low light performance. Also FS5 footage has a gross green cast on it so you'll always have to do a lot of fixing/colour correction in post. GH5s has much nicer colours, which means faster turnaround.

      Depends- what kind of video projects are you working on and roughly how much money are you charging for them? The FS5 might be overkill depending on what you're working on.

    19K+ views...and I hope Sony is taking some notes on the limitations (autofocus, menus, 4K 8bit). Let's not forget that waveform and vectorscopes are an essential tool for filmmakers, but are notably absent here. And finally, give us better screens Sony. You literally sell better screens on all your consumer gear.

      Yeah I revised by position on the FS5 a while after putting out this review. It really is just a watered-down FS7. It was also a total pain in the ass to sell since nobody really wants the FS5 (had to sell to a guy who lived in a neighbouring province). When it comes to Sony gear you should either go all the way to their professional line or just not at all. Their "mid-line" gear is just... bleh.

    Wow, 2018 has ushered in a new low of complaining about the great tools that are available. As they age, their prices get better -that's the deal. Until there is a real competitor to the inexpensive & ergonomic FS-5, all complaining should bediscounted, b/c there is no other choice at that price point (used FS-5 are plenty). Just use that A6500 or A73 as your perfect B camera. Different needs, there are different tools! Do you think Albert Maysels felt a camera w/out IBIS was not for run & gun. It's a visual style, not not an apology for not having IBIS (poor man's steadishot).

      Get faster glass: you date your cameras but you marry your lenses. Get some fast Nikkor AI or Canon FD glass and stop complaining about dating, just get married & shoot! The tools became amazing a few years ago. Complainers just going to complain....

      I'm already shooting at f1.4 iso 10,000 in some cases. further more I don't always want to shoot at f1.4 (people drift in and out of focus), sometimes I like having the option to shoot at f4. as I said the fs5 is amazing, but this is a review so it's worth mentioning (if someone has the money the canon c200 for instance performs very well in lowlight, built in raw instead of needing an external recorder, and great auto-focus. but it's almost double the price of the fs5). with a good story you can shoot a film on a canon t3i, doesn't mean that you should (and as the cinematographer, I like to have options in a cameras, there isn't always the budget for focus puller or the time to light a whole street at night). now as mentioned even with it's faults I am looking at an fs5, but it is worth mentioning it's faults...............otherwise it's just a promotional video (spec sheet video)

    • @mailjabber

      One can always desire more, but, having to work within limits is what makes one a great DP. Especially if they want to live up to the username "Legend DP 2011" . Directors also need to work within limits otherwise their projects would never get finished. Working together you are a team. There will always be someone cheaper than you, whose parents bought them a newer camera, but, can they do what you do? Match the experience you bring? -That is the real question. The cameras are just tools.

    • @legendp2011
      @legendp2011 6 років тому +2

      +Mail Jab.........I know cameras are just tools. but this is a review that whole purpose is to say how the tool performs, and how it compares with the other tools available, DP all over like to compare cameras, even if they could make amazing work with a budget dslr. the whole reason I watch a review is to know how a camera performs, in low-light, in dynamic range, in RAW, in handling (and even though some think it's a dirty word, auto focus), these are things I will consider when spending a lot on a camera.
      there is a lot of competition emerging (kinefity terra 4k, blackmagic 4.6k pro, c200, eva1). nice thing about the fs5 is the variable nd filter, the RAW, the weight, ability to go full frame (large format as alexa now is branding) using a metabones speed booster. I have far more money invested in lights and lenses, but like I said, I watch a camera review to know where it does well...........and where it struggles. if a review isn't telling me a cameras flaws than I would be skeptical, because the perfect camera doesn't exist

    This is probably the most affordable s35 raw camera available. Not to mention that with a speedbooster youve effectively got a dull frame raw capable cinema camera for $5k. Please try to do that with any other manufacturer. Good luck.
    Also, theres no such thing as slog. Its ‘s’-log, sony log.
    Lack of ibis means a camera isnt run m gun? Maybe it just means people beed to learn to hold and stabilize a camera?
