- Опубліковано 20 бер 2024
- In this week’s vlog, we leave the lovely town of Market Harborough and cruise our NARROWBOAT floating home back down the arm. We have the toughest swing bridge to work, watch to see if Julie can do it on her own this time! We meet up with friends at Debdale and moor up to have a catch up, then go our separate ways the next morning.
There’s a few ‘hoots’ on the way and we chat and giggle at the back of the boat, with Julie having a slip of the tongue 😜 and later, Martin has a question? 📣😂🤣
Hope you enjoy this week’s video! xx 😃

If you’re new to our channel, just a little introduction. We are Julie and Martin and in 2021 we sold our house and gave up our jobs, to live full time on a narrowboat. We bought our 2004 narrowboat Rhapsody in Blue in the September and have been living full time onboard ever since. We hadn’t intended on vlogging, but recorded videos for ourselves and family and it has escalated into the weekly vlogs you see today, so lovely to have tou all onboard! ❤️
Please join us as we continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK, sharing our cruises and adventures with you all, thank you! ❤️
We’ve made a couple of playlists for you too, one with all our favourite cruises and the other is all of our vlogs from the beginning, so you can binge watch to see where we’ve been so far! There’s also a walk through of our narrowboat home too, come inside and see how we live. ❤️

"Oww that bush is tight isn't it" 😂😂🤣 that made me laugh 👌👍😂🤣
Got to agree 😂❤
Hi David, I really couldn’t believe I’d said that! 😆 Glad it gave you a giggle 🤭 Thank you! xx
@toebared Lol, 😂😝xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Hi Julie, 😀🤣 it was brilliant lol,, yes it did give me giggle 😄 😀🤣😂 your welcome xx
Out of the mouths of babes!!

I always have Lucy lights to hang around r camp. They solar & hang and charge with the sun. U two are a joy to watch. I like how u kid with one another.
Solar lights are great aren’t they! Aww thank you, we do have a giggle lol xx
Yes , I vote Martin has to stand at the front of the boat, with Julie running the hooters. 😂😂😂
Definitely! It’s my turn lol 😂 I don’t think he realises just how loud it is hee hee 😜 Thanks Carrie! xx
What is it with Martin and his horn, Julie? It’s getting out of control now. Paul and Anthony have mentioned it before as well! He’s going to frighten the wildlife!❤😜📯
I know, I’m hoping the novelty will wear off 🤞🙏 lol 😂 Thanks Eric! xx
I think Martin needs some Horn Therapy and experience the loudness from up front for himself, we hardly use our boat horn.
@@dalejones4184 he’s promised to only use it when it’s needed now 😃 xx
Hi guys.Great to be with you again. What a laugh as have being with you. Julie so good to see you take control of the tiller.like you r dominance as At the first swing bridge, what was the green button too press. We love you so much ,dear friend s xxx
Hi Glenn, lovely to have you with us too! I just watched that bit back again, I believe that is a green light, although it was sunny, so I didn’t notice it light up once I’d put the key in and turned it. But as you turn the key, you hear a clonk, which is the road gates releasing so you can close them, so I would imagine that is when the green light would light up. Thank you so much! xx
Perfect day for a plod along a canal, hopefully more of those days to come 🤞 hahaha whoops Julie, was it a 70s bush 😂 every day is learning day 😊 great waffling as you plod along 😅 💪go Julie
Hi Debbie and Pete, hopefully see you somewhere
❤ stay safe ❤
Hiya matey! We did have a giggle at the back of the boat, and can you imagine if Martin does actually get a couple of cones! 🤦♀️🤣 You may pass Debs & Pete if you come Leicester way, as they’re having their blacking done at Redhill, looking forward to seeing you soon! xx ❤️
I love your adventures and channel! I was watching another one of my narrowboat favorites last week thinking you and Caroline remind me of each other. Narrowboat channel one day more aboard. And then I see you are friends! Made me smile. Thank you for sharing your adventures. Much love from Kentucky.
Hi Theresa! Yes Caroline and Pete are good friends, we will be moored with them at the Crick boat show, never thought of us being similar lol. Thank you so much, it’s lovely to have you with us xx
A man and his horn…always has to play with it!😅
lol, and don’t I know it! 😂😂🤣 Thanks Trudi xx
Yes collect the cones 😂
lol, yes I think he will! 🤪😂😂🤣 xx
There’s one swing bridge on the Peak Forest that is really hard to push/pull. Several of us couldn’t get it back in the slot no matter how hard we tried but the bridge was so heavy, it stayed in place, so we had to leave it! Not the right thing to do, but necessary.
Hi Wendy, yes sometimes there’s nothing you can do, and they can really be tough can’t they! Thanks! xx
A big well done Juie with that heavy old swing bridge. I must be honest I prefer swing bridges to lif bridges. Those on the Llangollen are a nightmare
Hi Liz, thank you, that swing bridge was a tough one! I’m the opposite, I prefer the lift bridges lol, and loved the Llangollen, although if I remember, they could be quite a workout with so so many turns of the windlass! Thank you so much! xx
Great vlog love Martin's humour
Aww thank you, he does make me laugh 😆 Hope you’re both ok xx
Ha ha love how cheeky Martin looked when he was talking about cones on the hooter, looked like a naugjty little school kid wanting someone, anyone to dar him to do it 🤣
Hiya! Yes, he is definitely a naughty schoolboy 😂 he’s now on the lookout for cones 🤦♀️ 😜😝 Hope you’re both well xx
What an entertaining vlog. You guys crack me up. Some great tips too. Looking forward the the Q&A session.
Take care 🙂
Hi Nick, hope you’re both well. Thank you, looks like the Q&A will be over a couple of vlogs 😃 xx
Weather is Indiana is very erratic which is basically how it has been all winter. It has been really mild overall but I am still ready for some warm days. I have daffodils, crocus and hyacinths blooming so it's any time now... Your cruise was sunny and lovely. I'm sure it feels great when you get all the boat chores done for a while. ❤
Hi Dorothy, yes it has been relatively mild this winter, but oh so wet, which makes you feel cold and damp. We really could do with a nice long dry spell couldn’t we! Love the Spring flowers, bet your garden looks lovely. It does make a lot of difference when the sun is shining, although every cruise is lovely whatever the weather is doing. It feels great when we get all the services done. Thank you so much for your lovely comment Dorothy! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB It's been a strange winter this year. Very mild with not a lot of snow or rain. Good winters like this one usually are 'paid for' the next year! You guys definitely had a lot of storms and rain. ❤
What a lovely video from start to finish Martin is funny 😅 the comment about the Bush haha take care both of you xx 😊
Well done with the swing Bridge 🌉 xx
Thank you David, we did have a giggle! He does make me laugh 😂🤣 and thank you, that bridge was a tough cookie! xx
well done Julie for managing that swing bridge, and well done Martin for manouvering the boat through that narrow channel to refill/empty. Martin is just like my husband with his different hats. Lovely spring blossom and daffodils. xx
Hi Joan, yes that swing bridge was a tough cookie, I was chuffed to have managed it!Martin’s brilliant at handling the boat, I’m always amazed at how he does it! Thank you so much! xx
Always entertaining 😂😂
Hi Chris, aww that’s lovely to hear, thank you! xx
Tight bush 😂😂.
I know 🤦♀️ what am I like, need to think before I speak lol 😂 Thanks Gary! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB No stay as you are please. Far to many people are changing in order to be more what they call acceptable
@@garyevans8116 yes, you’re right, and don’t worry, we’ll keep being us, these little accidental funny things just happen, and we’ll always keep them in the vlog. Thanks Gary xx
You too are so funny! Great video - beautiful weather, fabulous reflections, and very entertaining! I’m impressed you managed that bridge Julie - it looked so heaven and stiff to move. Well done you! Looking forward to the Q&A next week, though I’m always happy to see the same stretches of water again. They look different every time. Have a lovely week xx
Hi Mishka, yes that swing bridge really was a tough one! We may need to do the Q&A over a couple of vlogs, as we had so many questions, I’m editing them atm, we only did them over one cruise, so won’t be missing too much of the journey. Thank you so much! xx
You keep coming out with these gems Julie!! Tight bush, a stiff one!! Whatever next? 🤣
Martin likes his hooter….ooo er Mrs 😜.
Have a great weekend. Speak soon xx
Hiya matey! I know, I must think before I speak 😜🤦♀️ We did have a giggle though 🤣 Hope you’re ok, definitely speak soon 😙
Your amazing getting those swing bridges to move. Looked so heavy great job. Love the lights you put up around the inside of the boat. And the poles for hanging your laundry. Beautiful pictures of the landscape. Keep smiling
Hi Margaret, that large swing bridge was really a tough one! Thank you for your lovely compliments! xx
"Tight bush" followed immediately by "playing with gadgets" and it just went on from there, the playing with hooters and so forth. You'd have to watch a month or two of Heidi to get as much inuendo as you two packed into this episode. You both seem very cheerful now that spring is in the air. It is my favourite season and the one I have missed the most for a long time. My last spring was the year the volcano erupted in Iceland - we were in UK just about to fly out again and the very day we were to fly airspace shut down, so we got an extra couple of weeks of spring.
Just out of curiosity, when there is a heavy bridge or lock why don't you two swap positions?
Hi Tim and Jalika, lol, we did have a giggle or two this week didn’t we 🤪 Spring is a lovely time, all of nature waking up and the weather getting warmer! Hope you’re both well, thank you so much xx
Just realised I didn’t answer your question 🤦♀️ You’re right, we could swap positions, I’m just not as confident driving the boat, suppose I just need practice eh! xx
Such a lovely vlog as always, looking forward to Q&A next week. Always learn a lot from these 😊❤❤❤
Hi Jacqui, thank you, really hope we don’t disappoint on the questions! 🥴 See you soon! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB you could never disappoint anyone bless you xx
Thanks again great blog love the birds singing and a beautiful day 😎 Martin is a bit cheeky chap and well done Julie with that swing bridge looks hard work doing it on your own ❤
Hi Beverley, isn’t it lovely hearing the birds singing, we do love Spring! Thank you so much xx
Thank you for another great vlog!! You two keep it fun and enjoyable! How do you keep the boat so spotless? Do you wash the outside every morning? Always looks so shiney and bright! Thank you for taking us along!
Hi Dale, thank you for your lovely compliments! Martin usually wipes the boat down with a leather most mornings and gets rid of any bird poo as soon as he sees any lol, then two to three times a year the boat gets a good wash and proper polish (Spring and Autumn usually). If it gets bad in the winter, he may give it a quick rinse with just water and leather it off. Oh and never use T-Cut, it breaks the paint down! In our Q&A part 2 Martin goes through it and shows what he uses. Thanks Dale! xx
I was so tired, Julies dulcet tones was drifting me off to sleep! then Martin sounded the hooter!!! The Meanie!!!!! 😄 another great vlog thanks.
He is a rat bag with that hooter Anne lol, makes me jump at the front! Lovely to know you find the vlogs relaxing, thank you Anne xx
Never thought of locks, swing bridges, and windlasses as exercise equipment but in some bizarre ways they are 😮. Never thought of the cut as a large open air gym but there’s aspects of it when you really look at it. I wouldn’t necessarily say all narrow boaters qualify as gym rats per se, but we’ll leave it at that for comedic purposes.😂
Hiya! Yes, it can be a bit of a workout some days, which is good, as it keeps us ‘relatively’ fit lol 😜 Thank you so much! xx
Hi Julie and Martin. So nice to have a trip in the sunshine. Martin certainly likes that horn. Think he enjoys making you jump! Well done moving the swing bridge. The microphones are great. Take care. Nick
Hi Nick, yes what a difference the sun makes! lol, yes he definitely loves to make me jump with those horns, but he’s promised to only use them when needed now. Thank you so much for your lovely comment! xx
Martin, stop being horrible to Julie with sounding the hooter unnecessarily. And a cone on it would amplify the sound, not magnify it, so there! Be nice as she did well on those swing bridges. You've got it easy mate with just pressing the hooter button.
Great fun video as usual. 😂 Thanks,
Barry
Haha Barry, he is a joker, but it all in good fun, I’ll get him back one day! Lol 😂 Thanks Barry! xx
@JulieandMartinonRIB I love the banter between you two it's great. I hope you realise I was joking as well, and I still say you should never have bought Martin that hooter for Christmas. 😂 When your on a stretch where there are no blind bends or bridges etc., when the hooter is needed for safety, and you think he might want to make you jump, you need to stuff a sock up his hooter. The one on the boat, I mean. 😮
On a serious note, do you have red, white and green navigation lights for cruising after dusk or don't the CRT allow it on canals? I have seen some boats with them, but all the hire boats we have had have never had them, so we had to moor up at dusk.
Barry x
Hi Barry, of course we knew you were joking lol 😝 and trust me, I have been tempted to shove something up those hooters! 😂 Yes, we do have the navigation lights, we put them all on when inside tunnels and would definitely need them if we were to navigate at night. Don’t think we would like to cruise at night though, much prefer to see everything around us 👍😃 I don’t think hire-boaters are permitted to cruise after dark which is why they don’t have the navigation lights. Thanks Barry! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Thanks
Thanks!
Oh wow, thank you Steve! xx
I do Xx
Lol, I’ve got an awful feeling Martin is going to haha 😝 so watch this space 😂 Thanks Edward! xx
No rain, Great job on the bridge Julie. I would absolutely have to have music about to drive like that all day. Beatles come to mind
Yes, that made a change didn’t it!! 😂🤣 Thanks again Bette! xx
Hi Bette, sorry, only just noticed that you edited your comment! Thank you, yes that bridge was a tough cookie! We love listening to the birds and the water, once we’re moored up we listen to music 😃Thanks again! xx
Could listen to you two banter all day lol great to see a couple so in tune congratulations your now my favourite boaters keep em coming guys you brighton up my day x
Aww that’s a lovely thing to say Phil, thank you so much and lovely to have you with us! xx
Love your camera work, would appreciate details of the camera mount on the cabin roof in front of the helmsman ,how do you ensure that it doesn’t get knocked off the roof?
Hi Glenn, we only use our iPhones to film with and Martin uses a regular phone holder and he has taped it to a strong magnetic mount, so it won’t fall or get knocked off the roof. You can get them online or in chandleries. You can also get camera/phone holders that screw to smaller magnetic mounts on places like Amazon. Hope this helps! Thanks! xx
Still laughing about the bush.
lol, so are we haha 😂😂🤣 Thank you! xx
those traffic cones pop up in the strangest places, love to see that experiment 😆😅🤣😂 And I'm pretty sure we are all +M here so off hand jokes are perfectly fine 🙃
Hi Steve, I’ve got an awful feeling Martin is going to try that with the cones! 😜😂 just hope time that gets to push the button lol 😂 And yes, I really can’t believe I said that! 🤦♀️😝 Thanks Steve! xx
Thanks for the belly laugh, my other half says there's nothing worse than a tight bush, will chuckle over that one for a while i think😂😂😂😂😂😂

Hiya Ricafella, lol, we did have a giggle 🤭 I think you’re right with the questions vlog, I’m still yet to edit them, but looks like it will be over two vlogs, maybe even three 🤦♀️ Mind you, once I’ve edited out the bits where we ‘waffle on’ it might be ok lol 😂 We’re really looking forward to Crick, it should be fun, we’ll be mooring with Nikki and also One Day More too! xx

Hi Julie and Martin, I am back on from this week and remembered it’s your evening for a video. Happy spring equinox for yesterday, summer is on the way now. Martin if you find some traffic cones that would be a very “interesting experiment” and in the name of science should be tried!
Hi Edward, good to see you back on Thursday 😃 I think it’s a case of watch this space with the traffic cones, he’s pretty determined lol! 😜 Happy Spring to you too! Thank you! xx

If you have no home on land do you ever worry for older age being able to boat but once homes are sold is expensive to go back?
Hi Amanda, no we don’t worry about that, there’s always a solution if we can’t carry on boating, garden mooring, or a houseboat etc, we’ll tackle that though when the time comes 😃 Thanks Amanda! xx

So should be cheaper for next six months hope back better soon and love to see Martin to that with coans that be load what a funny blog this week
Hahaha, that made me laugh 😆 it doesn’t sound like you’re talking about our vlog lol 😂 we shall try to behave a bit better next time 😜 yes hopefully the next few months will be a bit cheaper, just need the rain to stop and the sun to come out! 😃 Thanks Nicholas xx
Hi guys, really enjoyed the vlog. We're heading down to that area on our 57x12 widebeam in the coming months. Canal Plan reckons we can get into Market Harborough but I didn't see any widebeams in your footage. Was there any? Thanks!!
Hi William, it certainly looks as though you can get a widebeam along to Market Harborough as all the bridges are wide and there’s certainly room to wind in the basin, it’s just Foxton locks that are narrow. I’ve just looked back on our footage and we didn’t see any widebeams down there, but we did see a GRP that was about 9’6” beam. Might be worth asking on one of the Facebook groups if anyone has taken a widebeam down the Mkt Harborough Arm? Really sorry we can’t help any further, hope this helps. Thank you so much xx
@JulieandMartinonRIB that's brilliant. Thanks for the info. All the guides etc say it's okay but I was just concerned I didn't see any.
I realize it's too late to submit a question but, I was curious what y'all's (southern speak...lol) long term plans were. Do you have any idea how long you will live on your boat, do you see yourselves staying on board as long as you are able to manage or, after a few years you move into a home and do some traveling or, is it more of a play it by ear type of thing...? Thanks!
Hi Roger, I’m still editing that video, so will try to include this question for you, thank you! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Hey Julie, thanks but I know editing is probably not your favorite past time (lol) so please don't go to a lot of trouble for it.
@@rogerr1296 I love editing, it’s a bit like a hobby, so not a problem xx 😃
Is the rule you have to move every 14 days on that section of the canal. Varies on the different canals?
Hi Marty, between the end of October and the end of March all moorings become 14 day moorings. Then after that you can only stay at a mooring for the maximum time stated. Some mooring spots are 1 day only, some are 2 days, 5 days, 7 days and some are 14 days all year round. We just look at the relevant signage at the time. Hope this helps, thanks! xx
Hi Julie & Martin, your lights looked so good we ordered some for our boat! QQ how have you attached them to your ceiling? Thanks Keith & Sue NB Potters About.
Hi Keith & Sue, we have used the Command clear hooks, spaced about 3ft apart, because the copper wire is nice and thin, we loop the wire around a hook, move to the next hook, loop it around and so on. Also, with the Command hooks, if you change your mind and want to take them down, they don’t leave any marks. Here’s a link to them, although you can get them in most supermarkets amzn.to/3TSy0Ar Hope this helps xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Thanks, we will get some and give it a try.
What was that about the bush? 😂😂 Can't believe ye blame Paul & Anthony for jumping on what ye said! 🤪😂 And I don't think I've known Martin to be so hooter happy!! 😁 And no to the cones but not for the reason ye think! They'd no work as ye'd think they would, they're too heavy!
