  • This week’s vlog continues from Welford where
    we left you last. You saw us spend Christmas there in episode 72, this picks up just after, 27th December, where we are very low on diesel for our Refleks stove, so we have to go and fetch some by foot! The weather while we were at Welford was dreadful, storm after storm, so unfortunately we couldn’t do any exploring or walks, but we do take you to get fuel. On our way to the mooring at the marina, the wind blew our NARROWBOAT floating home against the pontoons, sending a lot of our belongings flying off the shelves inside the boat, it was a right mess when we went indoors! We spend New Year at North Kilworth Marina, before fuelling up, emptying out and leaving for our first cruise of 2024. We use a ‘spring’ to manoeuvre the boat and show you how it’s done! The first cruise of the year is a damp and cold one, but the amount of water coming from the land and into the canal is phenomenal! The canal is already very high due to the recent storms. The gentle sound of the rain, the murky water and the bare trees, make for a peaceful cruise. We go through Husbands Bosworth Tunnel, which is very wet and drippy, and see a few waterfalls and gushes of water entering the canal, then on to a beautiful mooring at bridge 50 on the Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal. This mooring was so so peaceful, I baked a cake and a crumble, and even made soup, but then…it got noisy! What’s going on, GUNSHOTS?!! If anyone know what it was, let us know in the comments below!

    It looked like a cold wet cruise. Shooting Pheasants, most likely and thought i saw beaters, driving them into the firing line. A much nicer sound was the Tawny Owl, calling. We are lucky to have a pair of Tawny and Little owls on our farm here on the Wash. Love the haunting calls. Keep warm and dry . x

      Yes, it was a damp and dreary cruise, but well worth getting to that beautiful mooring. We love hearing the owls late at night, but those ones especially as they were so close! Thank you so much Tessa xx

    10 storms in so far. lots of Rain. Lets hope for an Early Dry Warm Spring. I expect that was pheasant shooting. Season is October to February

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  4 місяці тому

      Hi Julie! Lovely to hear from you! Yes, really hoping for an early spring, have a feeling we may get a few more storms yet though, and maybe even a big freeze before then 🥶 wow, we hadn’t realised it had been 10 in total so far, it’s literally one after the other isn’t it and the wind is just relentless! Tbh the wind is our nemesis, if it’s too windy we can’t cruise, as it’s too dangerous, I also can’t put the drone up either (it might blow away lol) and with all the rain we’ve had, it makes the trees quite precarious! Yes, it does seem that it was a shoot, only lasted around 15 minutes, it was quite fascinating, but so loud! Did you like the owls at the end, we felt so privileged being that close to them, one was literally in the tree at the end of the boat. Thank you so much! xx

    Hi Julie and Martin. Once again i loved your video, i really enjoy being able to share your travels. Not good weather for you though. Martin makes me laugh with his antics .What a lot of debris no wonder the water is so muddy, but still it is to be expected with all the rain we have had. Keep up the good work and stay safe.xx

      Hi Joan, yes this weather we’ve been having so far in 2024 is just one storm after another, crazy weather! Heavy rain coupled with high winds we were bound to have debris in the water. We just couldn’t believe the amount of water coming in off of the land, and the colour of the water, it was surreal, we enjoyed the cruise though and that mooring was beautiful, especially hearing the owls so close at the end too. Thanks Joan xx

    Hi Julie and Martin. Glad to see that you got to spend some time in Marinas during some of the bad weather. The canals look so flooded after all that rain. Fed up of all these named storms now! We could do with some settled weather. Take care. Nick

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  4 місяці тому

      Yes, you’re not kidding Nick, these storms are literally one after the other! It would be lovely to have some calmer weather, hopefully it’ll make us appreciate it when we do get some! It was lovely in the marina, seeing friends and a great New Year atmosphere, but to be honest, we really prefer it out on the cut, even in awful weather, it all adds to the adventure! Thanks Nick, stay safe xx

    Holy moly! Those "waterfalls" were rather pretty, but kind of scary at the same time. I've seen other narrowboaters' posts about some very serious flooding around the country, so I'm relieved to know you two were safe and not in the middle of it. My family used to have a small log cabin in the woods of Wisconsin, USA, and in the fall and winter we would often hear gunshots as folks were out hunting. It always made me nervous since we could almost never actually see the shooters, and I'm completely afraid of guns and shooting. I would have been ready to move away from that area, in your situation! 😊

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi Chris! Yes, there was so much water coming in off of the land and the canal was so swollen already, it had nowhere to go! We’d had so much rain! The gunshots were far enough away from us so we weren’t worried. Thank you so much Chris! xx

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  4 місяці тому

      Absolutely, we’re perfectly aware, in fact it’s actually tickover past moored boats, so less than 2mph and bow is the front, stern is the back, port is the left and starboard is the right. Thank you for your comment John, much appreciated! xx

      Lol, give them time, as soon as the sun comes out in summer, there will be closures again, happens every year, we just go with the flow 🤷‍♀️ We weren’t complaining, just pointing out that the water had nowhere to go, the land was waterlogged, the rivers all flooded and the canals swollen too. Pheasant shooting. You may not agree but the British Country side is like it is because of country sports and farming.
    If you ask them nicely they might pay you for a days beating. Walking through the woods to put the birds up.
    First the song birds come our. The the pheasants. Feeding the pheasants also feeds the song birds. There are more song birds on a shoot than non shoot ground.

    Why do you have two different types of diesel in the UK, red and white? Why can't you use the same one for cars and boats?

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  4 місяці тому

      Hi, for regular vehicles, cars and trucks on the roads, the diesel is the regular white diesel that you get at petrol stations and has the government tax already added. Red diesel is for agricultural vehicles and leisure boats only and we only pay tax on the diesel we use for propulsion, diesel used for heating is 0% tax. So when we fill up, it’s up to us to self declare the propulsion/heating split. So as the red diesel is cheaper, the reason they put the red dye in it is to stop regular vehicles using it. Hope that makes sense lol. Thank you for your comment, really appreciate it xx

Our boat is a traditional stern, so doesn’t have a cover or windscreen, so open to all weathers, if it gets very wet and rainy I usually stand with Martin at the back with a brolly.
