If you are new to our channel, here’s a little introduction. We are Julie and Martin, and in 2021 we sold our house and gave up our jobs, to live full time on a narrowboat. We bought our 2004 narrowboat floating home Rhapsody in Blue in the September and have been living full time onboard ever since. We hadn’t intended on vlogging, but recorded videos for ourselves and family and it has escalated into the weekly vlogs you see today, so lovely to have tou all onboard! ❤️
Please join us as we continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK, sharing our cruises and adventures with you all, thank you! ❤️
We’ve made a couple of playlists for you too, one with all our favourite cruises and the other is all of our vlogs from the beginning, so you can binge watch to see where we’ve been so far! There’s also a walk through of our narrowboat home too, come inside and see how we live. ❤️

Thanks for the q&a really enjoyed it, and thanks for continually making me laugh Martin with your goofy antics behind Julies Back
Haha Allan, so pleased you enjoyed it! We did have a giggle, Martin does make me laugh, even if he is messing behind my back lol 😂 Thanks Allan! xx
I am subscribed to, and regularly watch, just scads of canal boating vlogs. There are some I've seen where the personalities of the vloggers don't strike the right chord with me. You two are just so adorable and fun that I absolutely have to come back to every new upload you do. And Julie, I seem to know minutes ahead of time exactly when Martin is going to sound the horn on your boat. I think his inner prankster and mine must have been schoolmates together in a previous life. You're married to him, and yet he still manages to give you a jump-scare every time he sounds the horn. I have to admit, I find that so cute. My wife is from Portsmouth, but moved to the US long before we met. Imagine a Yank with a sense of humor parallel to Martin's, married to a Pompy Girl, and how much fun we have driving each other mad together. My most recent prank, if you want to call it that, was sneaking online and buying a new used car for her. She came home one afternoon from a church-organized trip to find a beautiful 2016 Toyota sitting in her parking space in the driveway. The look on her face was worth all the trouble I took to keep everything secret from her. (She hates me spending money on her, but she never complains about me buying anything for myself. So to have the car delivered to our door while she was off being a Teacher's Aid with her church group took me an enormous amount of effort to achieve.) --Dan
Hi Dan, thank you so much! So pleased that you are enjoying our videos, and of course Martin’s antics too! 😜 I wish I knew when he was going to sound that horn, it’s so loud at the front of the boat lol 😂 What a great surprise for your wife, a car, I bet she was made up! 😃 Well done for arranging it without her knowing, such a wonderful surprise for her! Thank you for your lovely compliments Dan! xx
“Soapy wash”… Heidi (naughty NB Pirate) said she would give her boat a soapy wash in her episode today. She laughed after “soapy wash” too…
lol, we saw that too haha 😝 Thanks! xx
Brilliant again! Love that you got your own back with the antics Julie!! It’s lovely to hear that there are so many places you want to go - hopefully you’ll be able to tick them off your list in due course, and we will be able to enjoy them with you 😊. Have a lovely weekend xx
Hi Mishka! Lol, it’s about time I got my own back 😂😂🤣 There’s loads of amazing places on the canals, we’re really looking forward to going north later this year! Thanks Mishka! xx
I am honored. I think you answered my question very well. So does Martin, apparently. Haha.
Hahaha 😝 we kept talking over each other lol. We roughly allocated questions each, and then it was a ‘free for all’ lol. Really glad you enjoyed this video, we were worried it might be boring with us two just jabbering on at the back of the boat 🤣 Thanks again for your question Peter! xx
Omg that vlog was so funny.
Hats off to you Julie for answering thise questions with Martin playing up, he was full of mischief this week.
Great questions and answers found the Internet one helpfull , thankyou .
Have a great week stay safe .
See you next week 😊
lol, so glad you enjoyed this one Debbie, we did have a giggle, even when I was trying to be serious and Martin was messing about, he still makes me laugh lol 😂 Thank you so much! xx
Thanks Julie and Martin. Really interesting questions and answers. Thanks for being so open and honest xx
Aww thank you, we did have a giggle lol, so pleased you enjoyed it! Thank you! xx
Good interesting vlog - with humorous interludes 😂. ONE QUESTION: with your security system, does it have a facility like you can now get on door chimes security that is linked to one of those Smart watches/mobiles? Where if someone stepped onto the boat - even the gunnells - your mobile would alert you and you can see/film who is there, and even scare the daylights out of them by speaking?? Continue exactly as you are doing because this is your dream and we are just the lucky ones you have invited along for the journey.
Hi Jill, aww thank you for your lovely kind words, it really means a lot to receive comments like this! And yes, the Reolink security camera does have that function, when we arm it of a night time, (or when we’re away from the boat) we get alert notifications, and we can see, hear and interact if necessary too. We may do a brief update on the camera, as we’ve had a few people enquire recently. Thanks Jill! xx
Omg he is a naughty boy , thank you for the laughter xx
Yes he is Lorraine lol 😂 Trying to be serious is not one of his strong points haha 😝 So pleased you enjoyed it this week xx
Yes I really did like the Q&A . So much fun and very informative. Keep smiling and love the scenery along the canals. 😊
Hi Margaret! So glad you enjoyed this one, we try to answer as honest as possible, but we did have a giggle along the way! Back to cruising next week! Thanks Margaret! xx
I really enjoyed all the questions and answers in both parts, guys, and especially all of your antics and poking at each other. You keep me in stitches! Even though I was paying close attention to everything you were saying, I couldn't help but be thrilled by all the amazing birdsong in these vids, especially the second part. I think they were all as happy for the beautiful weather as you two were! I hope it's a great week for you both, and I look forward to seeing you next time!
Hi Chris! So pleased you enjoyed these videos, we loved answering the questions, thank you for your one! We did have a giggle that day! I know what you mean re the birdsong, they were very loud, it sounds so lovely, so glad Spring is finally here! Thanks Chris! xx
And were all happy for you both, two of the loveliest narrow boat vloggers xxxxxxxxx
Aww thank you Andrea! How’s the boat, have you settled in ok? Have you been out on the cut yet? xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Ian (chick) has had a little go. I think he did great. He was surprised at how quick the wind pushed him towards another boat. Chick is going to finish the bathroom fitout, then we'll leave red hill and towards Loughborough and the grand union. We'll get better. xxxx Keep smiling xxx
No need to be sorry, Julie and thank you for explaining the answer too, Martin, it does make sense. Thank you both for making me laugh 😂 Just lost it when ye said blowback, Julie! Martin's face 😂 x
Hi Doc, this is how we are lol, it’s hard to have a normal serious conversation lol 😂 Thank you so much for the question xx
Haha that was brilliant viewing think that is a first a Q and A whilst crusing. Your humour is hilarious getting the old girl growing and blow back 😂😂😂
Haha yes, we did have a giggle that day, we loved answering all the questions! Martin does have a wicked sense of humour lol 😂 Thank you, hope you’re both ok?! xx 😘
These q& as have been brilliant, Julie you look amazing when Martin is not blowing his horn in your ear, ❤❤

Hello from North Wales! We have now watched all your videos (and of course subscribed) and the first thing we'd like to say is "thank you". Your videos, in content, style and presentation are amongst the best we've come across and it has been a genuinely wonderful experience following your adventures. We are looking forward to your future travels. Frances & Martin Pipe.
PS: Martin thinks Julie could stuff a carrot up the second horn to muffle it a bit... 😉
Hi Francis & Martin! Wow, thank you for such lovely compliments! Receiving comments like this really makes it all worthwhile! We enjoy making the vlogs and I love the editing 😃 and yes Martin, I am very tempted to shove something up one of those horns! 🤭😂 Thank you so much, it’s lovely to have you with us xx

Good evening Julie and Martin, your video is the best thing about Thursday! Always love your content and still hoping Martin gets hold of two traffic cones for the hooter experiment. Very best wishes for a fantastic week and look forward to your next video

Great questions and answers. Really helpful about the refleks too. You both really made us laugh, just love the humour. Martin reminds me of my mark so much 😂😂😂😂
Hi Jacqui! Lol, we did have a giggle 🤭 Can’t wait to meet you both out on the cut in your new boat! 😃 xx
Enjoyed your Q&A very much. I have never used my multi fuel stove, I use the diesel central heating. I’m paying £1.28 a litre on the Marina and have just filled up (3\4 empty when done) and the bill was just under £183. I’ve only managed 1 month!
Oh crikey Wendy! It would definitely pay you to light your multi-fuel stove, and you’ll be surprised at how little you would need your central heating on! £1.28 a litre is quite expensive! Mind you, hopefully we won’t need any heating soon eh, warmer days are on the way! Yay! Thanks Wendy! xx
Thank you both for answering all those questions 😊 Martin was being a cheeky boy th8s week 😅 and Julie was a minx, I saw you 😂 stay safe ❤
Haha, we thought this one might make you laugh! Martin was definitely on form lol 😂 although I did try and get him back hee hee 😝 Just seen Heidi’s vlog and she’s nicked your mop again! 😂😂🤣 See you soon matey! xx
Great video guys, it was very funny, you two have a lovely relationship with lots of laughs!
Aww thank you, we did have a giggle! Thank you! xx
When people catch catfish often they put the fish in fresh water and feed the fish clean food to get rid of their natural taste
Hiya! Oh wow, not heard of that, but yes, I suppose it would clean out all the bad stuff. Thank you for that! 😊 xx
We love your vlogs, you always manage to make us laugh !! And you also have sensible answers to questions.
Aww thanks Peter, we did have a laugh or two, we really enjoyed answering all the questions! Thank you! xx
Hi guys
Ref heating cost ....we have spent £620 on coal this winter ..... fortunately I still had left over timber from my old workshop so we didn't have to purchase logs....I would imagine logs may be about another £300 ish ...nice vlog ...catch you soon😁👍
Hiya! Yes, we’ve spent approx £875 on diesel, so it’s probably on a par, soon adds up though doesn’t it! We really enjoyed answering all the questions! Thanks matey! See you soon! xx
Loved the Q&A. Lots of interesting questions and very entertaining answers! Thanks guys.
Hi Neil, so glad you enjoyed it, we weren’t sure if people would find it boring, so it’s lovely to receive comments like this, thank you! xx
❤❤❤y’all are a joy to watch ❤❤❤
Aww thanks Julie, so nice of you! xx
Thank you guys. Do love your weekly dose of giggles. Take care xxx 😘
Hi Emma, so glad you enjoyed this one, thank you so much! xx
Well, one drawback to living on a narrowboat is there's no doghouse to send your husband to when he gets in trouble... and something tells me Martin would have a lot of "frequent flyer" miles built up if you did. 😂
Ok, I live in the southern US where we had a few 105F+ days last summer (our current record is 115F!!) during the height of summer. I know it doesn't get near that hot in the UK but, how do you stay cool and, is there any sort of air conditioning available for narrowboats? Thanks.
Hi Roger! Lol, yes we could do with a dog house 😂🤣 The hottest it’s been over here was 104°F/40°C in 2022, but usually we get around 80°F/27°C which is hot enough lol 😂. The boat can get hot, we have a couple of fans, but no aircon! We usually open the windows but close the curtains and the boat stays relatively cool. Thanks Roger! xx
This the second video of yours I've watched and it was great. I can see you have a lot to put up with Martin lol.
Hiya! Lol, we do have a giggle 🤭 even if Martin is joking behind my back … he forgets that I’m the one editing so I’m going to see it lol 😂 Really pleased you are enjoying our little videos! Thank you! xx
Thank you so much for the Spitfire story! I grew up with historic airplane models made by my father and my brother, so I love seeing yours there on Rhapsody in Blue. Happy cruising!
Aww you’re welcome Ann, thank you for putting that question forward! We’ll be back cruising again next week! Thanks Ann! xx
Loved the q and a really interesting even from a non boaters point of view x

Great video thanks. Some interesting questions too and as you know, we are new to this, so soaking up all the advice! Re the stove. Narrowboat Spudley did a brill vlog if anyone wants info on how to light and maintain the stove, Wayne did a vlog all about it so def worth watching for anyone who is thinking of getting one, or just got one! All the best. Kerry & Colin NB Time To Pootle x
Hi Kerry, s pleased you enjoyed the video, we loved answering all the questions! We’re actually moored with Wayne and Amanda at the moment funnily enough! Did you see our video of when we had our Refleks stove fitted, it was the coldest day of 2022 at -8° lol, here’s the link if you missed it ua-cam.com/video/hB8U_k_2sho/v-deo.htmlsi=pIQtYtEu_afxPi7k. Thanks Beverley, we did have a giggle lol 😝 Thank you! xx
If America had canals, life on a narrow boat would be a nightmare because of constant harassment by law enforcement. City, county, and state police as well as DNR and Coast Guard would stop and board your vessel looking for violations. This would repeat every time you passed from one jurisdiction to another. America is a fallen state and a police state.
Oh crikey, that definitely wouldn’t be relaxing like it is here! Thank you so much! xx
Did you add the link for ship to shore and thank you fir answering the question this has helped my understanding of the service
Hi Charmaine! Yes, the links to Ship-to-Shore are in the description, glad we could help, we really enjoyed answering g the questions! Thank you! xx

Hi Julie and Martin. A question about your beautiful boat. It's in amazing condition for 2004. Did you buy it in this condition or did you have lots of work to do to get her to that standard? Another lovely vlog. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!
Hi Howard, we bought her in this condition, we were lucky that the two previous owners really looked after her. Thank you so much for your lovely compliment, thank you! xx
Hi Julie and Martin, love your channel. Can you tell me where Martin bought his new horns? Clive and Diane, NB. This England.
Hi Diane! Aww thank you, so glad you’re enjoying our videos! We got the horns from Amazon, here’s the link Netagon 12v Vintage Loud Sound... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09S16SS2V?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Thanks! xx
Can you show your interior of your boat? Do you travel daily,or stay moored up for periods of time? Thanks Bob in Montana, USA
Hi Bob, we are permitted to moor up for a maximum of 14 days, before we need to move on, but we usually cruise every few days. We did a video giving a complete tour of our boat, here’s the link
ua-cam.com/video/UknvFVAlyIo/v-deo.htmlsi=Ano40lCZtrukIS8S hope you enjoy it. Thanks Bob! xx
Can you get supermarket deliveries to a boat? I remember getting booze delivered to a park in lockdown (deliveroo I think, but I think they stopped that now), didn’t realise supermarkets deliver to non postcode addresses.
Hiya, yes, we have Tesco deliveries quite regularly! So long as you can get an address with a postcode, even a bridge has a postcode, then you just put a message in the notes bit that you live on a boat and for the driver to call 20 minutes before arriving and you’ll walk up to meet them. We’ve had deliveries to car parks, pub car parks and bridges, it’s great! Thank you so much! xx
oops, you missed my question.
Living on the waters of the canal do you get much trouble from Crocodiles and Hippopotamuses?
😂😂😂🤣 That made us chuckle! Thankfully nothing like that in the canals, not sure it’d be very relaxing if that was the case! 🤪 Thank you! xx
Sorry going bloody prediction
lol, we knew what you meant! 😂 xx
Hi Julie & Martin, been following your vlogs for a few months. As an Englishman living in Canada my wife & I are looking to hire a Narrowboat in November this year for a month, to find out if we will enjoy a life on the canals then with the intention buying our own boat next year. We hope to hire a boat from Heyford Wharfe in Oxfordshire, Have you any advice you could give us please?
Thanks Pete & Mary
Hi Peter & Mary, great idea to hire in the winter, you will know by the end of the month if boat life is for you. Although November is early winter, you will get some chilly nights, but the boat should be equipped to keep you warm. We would suggest to bring mainly warm practical clothes and good walking boots, and wellies lol. Be prepared for possible muddy towpaths and rain and wind. Tips would be: WATER: never pass a waterpoint without stopping to fill up, FOOD: keep your kitchen cupboards stocked up with a few packets and tins etc, as you never know if the temperature drops and you get frozen in, so you’ll always have food and water. TORCHES: Take a few torches, as it gets dark at 4pm, so if you were to walk to shops, or a pub etc, you really need a good flashlight to see your way along the towpath. MAPS: Buy a good map book, either a Nicholsons or a Pearsons Guide, and download the OpenCanalMap App on your mobile phone, it’s a GPS real time SatNav for the canals, it shows you where you are and where services, shops, pubs and moorings are. There’s also a website you may want to use canalplan.uk/cgi-bin/canal.cgi Canal Plan, you can plan your route and it tells you how long your journey will take and how many locks there are etc. Bear in mind that CRT do their winter maintenance on the canals and locks between November and March, so there may be stoppages/canal closures along your route. Both the App and website show these, however, I would speak to your boat hire company before you take the boat out just to see if there are any planned on that canal. CRT release their winter maintenance schedule around August/September time, to give boaters plenty of time to work out and get to where they need to be to avoid closures. Although obviously we love the summer months as it’s nice and warm and sunny, we really love the winter too. In winter the canals are a lot quieter and most moorings become 14 day moorings, so you don’t have to move so often. Another tip would be, if you are unsure of something, or find something particularly difficult, don’t suffer in silence, ask the nearest boater for help or advice, the boating community is wonderful, everyone helps each other. So if you’re in a tight spot, just ask, everyone is happy to help!
Most of all we would say, enjoy every minute! Hope this helps! If you have a specific question or need anything else, just give us a shout. Thanks! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Thank you so much for your reply and answers to our questions 👍we are looking forward to hiring this boat and giving canal life a try once again thank you so very much we appreciate it xx
Hi guys thanks for a great vlog and thanks for doing my question you made my year my life is complete I was jumping around like a big kid I love your reply every week makes my week you and morning star feel like family love to meet up one day but got more chance to be struck by lightning the only way is crick and cannot afford that one off your questions about how far you have to move after two weeks there is an answer to that there a new vlogger a watch on odd times cannot remember his channel as he always moaning about things he thinks you should stay as long as you like but they did email him with a amount you have to move and it's 11km as a lot off people just go 100 yards and say they moved and last off all I nearly wet my safe when Martin pissed you off have you got a voo do doll or did you kick 7 lots off Jesus out off him as he ways very quite for rest off vlog as if he was in dog house or in the poo roll on next Friday stay safe xxx
Aww we’re so pleased you enjoyed it! We did have a bit of a giggle 🤭 Martin can be trying sometimes lol, but I did get him back when I was steering hee hee! 😝 Yes obviously we shouldn’t just go 100 yards lol, but so long as you go a decent distance and in the same direction you’re fine. We are continuous cruisers, so we have to cruise, people that want to stay in the same place as the chap you described, would need to pay for a home mooring or marina. The reason for this is to allow everyone to use the canals and not have people continuously ’mooring’ that way everyone gets to use all the moorings. So so pleased you enjoyed this one! Thanks Nicholas! xx
Hi Julie & Martin how long have you both been together for.
Hi David, we’ve been married for 37 years (next week!) and we met 4 years before that, so 41 years in total! Hope you enjoyed this week’s video, we did have a giggle lol. Thanks David! xx
