I Love the fact that the families are trying to hold onto what their forefathers purchased & passed down to their children. I look at it as a Major blessing!! Their land is absolutely Beautiful!
However, on the flip side of things, change is inevitable. Property taxes increasing, new roads being added or enlarged, larger schools being built are all signs of growth. I believe that a person should be able to hold on to their property if they want to as long as they are paying their taxes. They should Never be forced to sale their property! Period!!!

  • @OmarAbdulMalikDHEdMPASPACPAPro

So many of Black families have been through this. 💔 I think many folks in my generation (Gen X) became enamored with "big city" life and, readily sale our land shares for quick money. We have immediate expenses and are eager to take that immediate money. The living cost is so high! I'm trying to hold on to what I have now. My wife and I get calls and letters asking if we want to sell our property. 😓

First, I'm embarrassed that after twenty months, I'm just discovering this invaluable piece that cuts to the heart of the experiences of Black U.S. constituents at large. Second, it's appalling that at the time of my viewing, only 830 of the 28K viewers considered it worth the effort to "LIKE", i.e., appreciate the time, effort, and ultimately, the expense of collecting and compiling this invaluable footage and reporting. Thank you for all that you do in the name of the historical preservation of often marginalized people and communities.

I grew up in Nassau County, Florida (Callahan, Florida) The most Southern Lowcountry area in the Southeast. When I was a child I had to work on my grandfathers farm, I learn a lot about farming and hated every moment of it. I help plant, weed, and picked it all in those fields back in the day. When I was 17 years old I join the US Army in 1979 and vowed never to set foot in another field or return to dirt roads and the country. Here I sit in KIlleen, Texas in 2023 at this very moment planning my move back on to my great-grandfather's land (purchased in 1902) within months. The funny thing is, I'm spending $500,000 to get what I had for free as a child. I've traveled the world in the US military and as a Department of Defense employee, I'm looking forward to getting back to my roots with a passion.

Generations of trauma and PTSD. EVERYday could be the last. Severe trauma can change ones DNA/RNA for generations. I contend the sell off of family's led to perhaps the continuing locking heads w each other bc tribes could hold different beliefs and traditions. Then on top of that, the stepping if identity... Imagine the strength, yet stress of holding it in so as to put a strong face for future generations. "Some things better left unsaid". I know what you mean. This is a very timely piece. Thank you for making it. I believe there is an awakening occurring in our young people who are now seeing the need for land and business ownership. This is something that was lost over the last 2 generations where the focus was "get an education and move to the city where you can get a good job". This was the way out of poverty for those generations and I dont blame them. Now the young people have access to information on finances and investments. I hear young people talking about generational wealth and diversified portfolios. Keep pushing. The young people coming into adulthood now are poised to do great things if they know where to start.

Conversely, multiple plantations have been preserved in the area.

It's not that it's just heir's property. It's the fact that AA don't talk about business like it should be discussed. People move away and then one day want to sell and then they sell to a person who wants to force the rest out. It Will's were set up correctly and it was discussed that before you sell the family's land to a person or company sell it to family first. It's not the city or state, or a company that is the AA's worst enemy it's the lack of business communication.

Years ago two sisters willed their homes to their respective churches because they didn't have children. Those properties served as income for the churches during those transitional periods as generations moved in & out causing the income of the church to rely mainly on those with fixed incomes. The churches have now upgraded to user-friendly (elevator, handicap ramps, etc.) and paid off so they can give even more back to the community. One of the churches is the 2nd oldest black church in the city and once served as a school for black children that weren't allowed to attend the regular schools. So having that home provide income has been instrumental.

You are doing the right thing, you must teach the children the value, because when the land is ignored by the children, they will sell it to the first entity who sets a price for it. By hook or crook it will be taken away. Only when its gone, will the uninformed seller realize that they should have held on for their children or concerned relative or friend. Someone who will treasure the land as a keepsake.

This may rub some folks the wrong way. But, back in the day, we needed land to farm, feed ourselves and survive. However, farming is not what most young people are interested in. Land usage has to be updated. Talk with the young people about ideas for land usage other than farming. Perhaps they can build houses that are worth renting out or some other kind of businesses. Otherwise, If they sell the land, they can still invest in something that is worth having today. Holding on to land and not making use of it, will only lead to more land loss.

The jews who are Kazarians, owned the slave ports in Africa and here in the USA and the ships to transport and work out of Rhode island! Never here about that! It's because they changed the times history.

How does he not see it as race, when they want to add a 5th lane to the highway? He must not have been taught or was raised to believe that because he has generational property that it isn’t about race. This sickens me that many of us who are fortunate doesn’t see that racism is embedded in the very foundation of this country. This is partly why and how many of our black towns disappeared. The fact that the family is fighting because of what the city is planning, is EXACTLY what I’m talking about. I’ve been toMt Pleasant and it is beautiful. Do they even know about what the Gullah islands are going through? Are they aware of Tulsa’s history? I’d love to have. Conversation with him.
Harvest on, still is racist. I’ve spoken to many people there and you can see the blurred lines. As long as the block people stay in their lane, everything is good. It’s an unspoken word.

If they team up with the local DNR and form a nonprofit, they might be able to create a preservation trust.
