I became slightly myopic when I was 11, I refused to wear glasses and my myopia practically didnt progress for many years, got contact lenses during university, and then my vision started really go down, to -5 when it finally stopped when I was ca 25.
Hi Lumen Optometric, I thank you for posting Dr. Earl Smith III, report on the effect that a single minus lens has on the refractive state of the normal eye! That is a real learning process and education!
Are there special types of spectacles or lens that can be worn to minus the effect of phone use effect on eyes? For people working on mobile phones and computers 24/7 and about me too as a software engineer
I have found that, at 20/60, I can wear a plus 2 lens, for all my close work. Then slowly, my Snellen clears to 20/40. Passes FAA PRIVATE Pilot license. Then, more plus, and slowly the 20/20 line is clear. This is a refractive change of from -1 Diopters, to +0.5 Diopters. The process is comfortable for me.
Don’t wear glasses on your phone unless your myopia is too high, so just wear the weakest ones you can see the screen with, so differentials. Then just do endmyopia
Why does the brain elongate the eye when the focus is already on the retina (before elongation in the video)? I don't understand that. Shouldn't the vision already be clear because the focal point from the light is already on the retina?
But what about people who has corrected it with daily exercises and taking health care products and precautions there are many examples of people who has corrected the disorder in their young age only so they don't have to suffer in adult stage
Ooooh! I've never had or needed glasses😳👁👁, and now I'm *_even more_* thankful this is the case! My lovely wife got her first glasses last June (she looks very cute with them), and when she tries to explain to me why she has them, I, as someone with perfect eyesight, just get more & more confused.😲
Hey there, here is a summary of many studies over the past decade testing traditional single vision lenses (what most kids wear) versus other corrective methods thought to slow myopia. In terms of experimental design, single vision lenses are always the "control" because it's a universally-accepted fact amongst researchers/practitioners that normal single-vision glasses worsen eyes. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3624048/ For more of a fun study, this one actually used lenses to purposefully cause monkey eyes to grow asymmetrically. This one's a little difficult to parse, but what they did was insert lenses into monkey's eyes where half of the lens had myopic correction and the other half didn't. Half of the eye that "saw" through the myopic lens grew longer, whereas the other half didn't. Dr. Earl Smith's research was the first time researchers were able to manipulate at-will the eye's length with lenses. Hopefully this helps.
@@strong1134 Hello Strong, This topic is a little bit more complicated and we only tried to scratch the surface with this video (we simplified some of the terms for simplicity as well). Unfortunately we can't optically engineer our eyes to reverse the axial growth. Doctors have documented it from time to time, but there are no large-scale, mass reviewed studies. We aim to slow or significantly stop the progression, but I'm not aware of anyone promising to reverse it. Myopia, under most conditions, is inherited. To better understand these concepts, you may inquire to see if any local eye doctors hold any seminars regarding myopia progression. Again, do remember that some of the terms of the video are an oversimplification of optical correction, so other doctors may choose to explain it in a slightly different way.
Is it possible for a 28 year old to have myopia now? I'm 28 years old and I've already had tests and had perfect vision, but after the quarantine my vision got bad at night and the ophthalmologist says I have myopia -1.25. I started wearing glasses and today it has increased to -1.75. Is this possible, because I thought myopia was a thing for teenagers?
I have perfect vision😳👁👁☺, and no, myopia has NEVER been a teenage thing! They say it's spreading worldwide rapidly, among people of all ages! My best friend has been myopic since he was less than 8 years old, the age he got his first glasses🤓. I'm just so glad I'm 55 & I've still never had or needed glasses!😍😌
It can happen, just more often starting around 8-10 rather than in your late 20s! Some patients are late bloomers. But realistically spending more time outdoors and less time on the screens might help to reduce some elements of "transient" myopia.
@@lumenoptometric But my personal experience from my age of 6 already developed myopia, getting worse year and year until I decided to try +.75 undercorrection around my age of 20, and it stoped getting worse for years. Maybe this does not apply on children
If you need glasses, it is always important to wear them, especially if safety is a concern (such as driving). Not wearing glasses and seeing blurry can also worsen your vision as a child/teen. Even though it sounds like a lose-lose situation, there are ways around it with special types of lenses.
@@glamgirl5068 Yes, You're Right ! But we're destroying our vision ourselves by using Smartphones, PC, etc. We've to reduce the screen time. I got prescription glasses 4 months ago, I've been following max 3 hours per day screen time & No Use of screen after 9 pm. Vision improved a bit.
@@lumenoptometric Or just do endmyopia. So yeah wear glasses only for distance but reduce it a bit and do active focusing And wear way weaker glasses for up close if you have moderate to high myopia.
This may be one of the elements of that, but there are quite a few other things that can lead to your vision slightly worsening over time. Look for something called "presbyopia."
Ortho-k might be what you're looking for. Some caveats exist, though. There are no studies involving slowing myopia for adults, but optically the effect is the same as for kids. Theoretically if adult eyes elongate for the same reasons as children's eyes, a treatment method such as orthokeratology would be something worth looking into.
Do not get STUCK on drawing the "eye as a camera ". It is a Dynamic Systems. All eyes, at birth, control their refractive STATE, to there AVERAGE OF ACCOMODATION.
What a cheerful video, I think I may just jumping for joy now.

Meanwhile my mom: its cuz u're always on ur phone
There is some truth to that.
Eye strain so yea ig
It's true. Near activities can increase myopia progression.
The normal dynamic eye moved negative because of long term close work, and because of the minus lens used to fix the first self induced problem.

Very mild prescriptions such as -0.5 can fluctuate towards zero over time. If it was a -5.00, that's another story!

can you tell me what to do?
So what’s the solution like??
Are there special types of spectacles or lens that can be worn to minus the effect of phone use effect on eyes? For people working on mobile phones and computers 24/7 and about me too as a software engineer
Blue light glasses

Blue light filter in the phone 😊😊😊
1) Close work.
2) A minus lens.
Then why do doctors recommend to wear glasses even if you have -0.25 dont they know the consequences?
The solution to this issue is Hoya Miyosmart lens with DIMS technology. It stops myopia progression in children by 60%
Why does the brain elongate the eye when the focus is already on the retina (before elongation in the video)? I don't understand that. Shouldn't the vision already be clear because the focal point from the light is already on the retina?
Genetics set the foundation and may be one of the drivers of that initial, larger growth.
