Ortho-K Helps Monique With Farsightedness

There's a large subset of farsighted patients that are lucky enough to not have to wear distance or reading glasses until their forties. The bad news is that when that time hits, it's extra unsettling because over the course of several years, both the distance and near become blurry! Ortho-K can also help these patients to "rewind" the clock, as Dr. To likes to say.

      It can happen, just more often starting around 8-10 rather than in your late 20s! Some patients are late bloomers. But realistically spending more time outdoors and less time on the screens might help to reduce some elements of "transient" myopia.

      Ortho-k might be what you're looking for. Some caveats exist, though. There are no studies involving slowing myopia for adults, but optically the effect is the same as for kids. Theoretically if adult eyes elongate for the same reasons as children's eyes, a treatment method such as orthokeratology would be something worth looking into.

    • @lumenoptometric

      Yes, it can be corrected with glasses, soft contacts, ortho-k, or scleral lenses. With ortho-k, the quality of your vision will greatly depend on the quality of your tears, your sleep quantity, and your sleep quality. But the upper limit of 100% custom OK correction is around -10 or -11, with standard OK's upper limit being around 5D.

This is by an Engineering - Scientific Choice, where I work my vision back from 20/50 to 20/20, during the school years. I look forward to that success. Ortho-k can be used to treat post-LASIK blur, but as for the HOAs, it's tough to say due to the variation in how eyes respond to the laser. One specialty lens that works specifically to treat HOAs is the ARES Scleral Lens from Ovitz, which we also fit at our office. In the coming months we'll have an updated scleral lens page with significantly more information regarding that lens. If you have any other questions, please reach out to our office or another ARES office local to you.

    • @lumenoptometric
      @lumenoptometric 3 роки тому

      Hey there, here is a summary of many studies over the past decade testing traditional single vision lenses (what most kids wear) versus other corrective methods thought to slow myopia. In terms of experimental design, single vision lenses are always the "control" because it's a universally-accepted fact amongst researchers/practitioners that normal single-vision glasses worsen eyes. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3624048/ For more of a fun study, this one actually used lenses to purposefully cause monkey eyes to grow asymmetrically. This one's a little difficult to parse, but what they did was insert lenses into monkey's eyes where half of the lens had myopic correction and the other half didn't. Half of the eye that "saw" through the myopic lens grew longer, whereas the other half didn't. Dr. Earl Smith's research was the first time researchers were able to manipulate at-will the eye's length with lenses. Hopefully this helps.

      @@strong1134 Hello Strong, This topic is a little bit more complicated and we only tried to scratch the surface with this video (we simplified some of the terms for simplicity as well). Unfortunately we can't optically engineer our eyes to reverse the axial growth. Doctors have documented it from time to time, but there are no large-scale, mass reviewed studies. We aim to slow or significantly stop the progression, but I'm not aware of anyone promising to reverse it. Myopia, under most conditions, is inherited. To better understand these concepts, you may inquire to see if any local eye doctors hold any seminars regarding myopia progression. Again, do remember that some of the terms of the video are an oversimplification of optical correction, so other doctors may choose to explain it in a slightly different way.
