@أبو الحسن Assalamo aleykom, my dear brother Abu Alhassan. Baraka Allah fik. Unfortunately, our umma became trapped in fitna. Our Prophet warned us to not stray away with small groups. In Sahih Muslim [1847, chapter of obligation to stay with the majority (Jamaa) in period of fitna], the Prophet warns us about the predicators that invite people to hell and that we must stick to the majority of the Muslims.
It has been narrated on the authority of Hudhaifa b. al-Yaman who said: People used to ask the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about the good times, but I used to ask him about bad times fearing lest they overtake me. I said: Messenger of Allah, we were in the midst of ignorance and evil, and then God brought us this good (time through Islam). Is there any bad time after this good one? He said: Yes. I asked: Will there be a good time again after that bad time? He said: Yes, but therein will be a hidden evil. I asked: What will be the evil hidden therein? He said: (That time will witness the rise of) the people who will adopt ways other than mine and seek guidance other than mine. You will know good points as well as bad points. I asked: Will there be a bad time after this good one? He said: Yes. (A time will come) when there will be people standing and inviting at the gates of Hell. Whoso responds to their call they will throw them into the fire. I said: Messenger of Allah, describe them for us. He said: All right. They will be a people having the same complexion as ours and speaking our language. I said: Messenger of Allah, what do you suggest if I happen to live in that time? He said: You should stick to the main body of the Muslims and their leader. I said: If they have no (such thing as the) main body and have no leader? He said: Separate yourself from all these factions, though you may have to eat the roots of trees until death comes to you and you are in this state.
So, we have to stay with the Jamaa and not stray away with marginal groups, like neo-salafis and Ahbach. Allahumma Salli ala Muhammad.

These are the ones that have really helped me begin to understand Islam and their words and with the words in the Quran and what I already believe about God, Jesus, etc.....each and every day I listen to new lectures, I ask God to please guide me to the truth, to the path which is straight, to his way of life and may God truly guide me ultimately to himself

The greatest scholars have divided bida into 5 to 7 forms. You should do more research and you will see that this position has been held until the 1700and was attacked by the followers of Abdul wahab. All the traditional ulama Imam Malik Imam Shafi'i Imam bukhari Imam an nawawi and others. If you find one scholar who you follow who disagrees with the luminaries of the deen then that's fine. However we will agree that these luminaries had more knowledge and taqwa then us and upheld the deen

My icon. Shayk Hamza Yusuf. Thank you always. Many scholars of islam sometimes lose the big picture. We all know that for example that dua randomly or after salah is not obligatory but a good opportunity. So is making dua before exams is deemed innovation as our Rasool PBUH did not go to school? Our Rasool has not clearly defined what bidah is. This is just one of the situations to emphasize the ludicrousness where so much time, effort and scorn may be displayed by many scholars. Scholars should learn to engage with the ummah with more important things as some waste our precious time and undermine our intellectual scope and abandon the application and analysis of the aspect of bidah.

There were no Quran schools in the time of the Prophet (pbuh) There were no diacritical marks in the Quran. There were no books of hadith and no collections of hadith like Bukhari, Muslim, etc. The ulama like Imam Shafi'i divided bida into seven kinds. You should also be aware that there is beneficial bida is described in Sahih Muslim. I pray that you become a person of knowledge and caution.

1) all of what you mentioned aren’t biddah in acts of worship or deen .. the prophet ﷺ rode a camel and now we ride cars .. that’s an innovation (biddah) but not a biddah in the religion.

No, that is just following his example. Loving someone means remembering the good someone has done in life and being emotionally attached to the person by visiting them in the grave after their death and honouring anything associated with that person, for example his home or his home town or his family and his tribe and his nation.
If you love your child, you don't follow and obey them. You kiss them, embrace them, want to see them, remember them when they are absent, get sad at memories of bad times and get happy at memories of good times, and indeed remember the day they were born and brought you so much happiness, and should they die before you, remember the day of their death with sadness.
This is love. It is heartfelt and expressive and keeps the memory alive at every occasion.
The abstract formula of following his advice, though obligatory, is not love. It is duty. It is what we do because we recognise that his advice is correct. Love is what we do because we feel that he is more lovable than our parents and our children. I already told you how we naturally keep the memories of our parents and children alive and emotionally show happiness and sadness at good and bad memories, good and bad associations. We should show tenfold for our prophet. Otherwise, our duty is loveless; we are following him without any of the normal, natural, fitri signs of love.

There's alot of people judging others simply from the sects they're in. At the end of the day, no one can actually judge the contents of one's heart, therefore we have no place to say what is right or what is wrong. If you feel that something is wrong, dialogue, don't argue! Sufi, Suni or Shia, any man or woman who has dedicated their life to studying Islam deserves to be heard. :)

Then who is to give da'wah to the president? It is the responsibility of the Muslims to convey the message to EVERYONE, even if he is the president of the most powerful nation on Earth.
Every innovation that does not agree with the religion is in the hell fire. However, the deen is more than a hadith that people have taken to mean every innovation or how would we then see that in the sahih Muslim it speaks of beneficial bida. Therefore it is essential for people to understand that bida would also include grammar rules quran schools, school of fiqh like in the Arabian peninsula

Do not confuse, a Nobody thinks the celebration of an anniversary of a country is a religious act. Mawlid in the other hand IS considered a religious act (hence it's a Bidaa) DO not confuse!

People differ on the understanding of "bid'ah" itself so I guess it's not fair for you to call people a caller to bid'ah if you don't understand the intensity of the issue.

Prophet saws taught us to use miswak. It is part of our deen. So if we use toothpaste, is it bidah? Prophet saws taught us to keep our clothes clean for ibadah. If we use washing machine to achieve it, is it bidah? Tahara is half of our iman. There are countless bidahs in Tahara which everyone does. Lets correct half of our imaan before talking about mawlid.

They are the people who adhere to the Hadith; the righteous predecessors who follow in the footsteps of the early generations in acting upon the Qurýan and the Sunnah. Any sect that contradicts them is threatened with the Fire.

I humbly request the names of the teachers which Shaykh Al-albani learnt from becuase I cannot find any when I read his biography. Just because Dr Bilal Phillips and others say that the sufis have Khidir in their chain, doesn't make everyone that is disagreeing with you a sufi.

What in innovation in Islam?
Assalammu'alaikum Wr Wb,
First and foremost one must truly and correctly understand what exactly is innovation in the religion (deen) of Islam in order to form or apply the correct judgment of it.
To know this one must when reading the following explanations be absolutely sincere in reading it. It must be read with an absolute clear mind and intention to gain the correct insight (wisdom) and not a misconstrued insight (false ideologies). It is in no way to misguide anyone from the truth and correct path. Your misunderstanding in comprehending its true meaning and sense is entirely of your own incorrect judgement or failure to see its light (absolute truthfulness).
Bismillahi Rohmannir Rohiim
Innovation in Islam relates to making actions or doing things which were not prescribed (deeds) by Nabi SAW nor were there any precedent (origin) from Nabi SAW nor it is mention in The Holy Quran.
Hence the true meaning of innovation in the religion (deen) has been far misconstrued by past Islamic Scholars and current Scholars including those who are strong followers (taksub) to these Scholars.
What is the actual innovation or form of innovation that is forbidden?
It is where one innovates the religion (deen) by 1) intentionally and 2) falsely linking it to the Holy Quran and/or the Sunnah.
It is by adding and/or omitting the prescribed (deeds)or precedent (origin) actions or functions which has been perfected in Islam.
Hence to pray wudhu for example or similar to it is not an innovation because it was allowed by Nabi SAW as it was a prescribed (deed) and precedent (origin) method for additional prayer (Sunnah prayer). I.e. there was a precedent (origin) in the methodology or steps to pray sunnah. To follow in these steps is absolutely acceptable Inshaa-Allah. Eg. solatut tasbih, nafl, etc.
Hence to do anything additional [to what has been prescribed (syariah) in Islam] and then 'think' or 'intent' that one is (or it is) better than the Holy Quran or Sunnah is what is forbidden. None can ever be better than Them.
Therefore in my opinion, excessive solawat is allowed as it has been allowed by Allah SWT. Allah SWT commands us to selawat unto Nabi SAW. So it has a precedent (origin) set to it. But to do it in a manner like dancing or jumping about or claim and think that Nabi SAW is present during the solawat is forbidden (innovation).
The Khulafa Ar- Roshidin didn't do it as perhaps they'd most certainly breakdown due to their closeness to Nabi SAW or perhaps fear of innovation. They didn't want those after them to create or innovate the religion with a negative mindset. Ie. believing that it is ok to innovate just about anything in the religion. Just like false hadith appeared later on. The companions were very wise and knew the consequence of what will come later. Or perhaps Allah SWT didn't make them do it so as to avoid forbidden innovations and free them of blames.
Hope the above explanation will help clear the misconstrued perception of what the real forbidden innovations are and how to apply it correctly and not falsely.

Were they celebrating their nation's 100th because of ibadah and for deen? Or because of reasons related to dunya?
Bid'ah is only when it is based on the deen, on ibadah, not reasons realited to dunya.
This is the saved group; those who adhere steadfastly to the truth that the Messenger (peace be upon him) came with, and adopt the way of the Messenger (peace be upon him) and that of his Companions. They are Ahl Al-Sunnah wal-Jamaýah (those adhering to the Sunnah and the Muslim community).
How do you judge who is a rightly guided scholar?
Sorry but no. Allah has already told us who he is pleased with in Surah Tawbah 9:100, the Muhajireen and the Ansar, and those who follow them EXACTLY.
So the scholars who follow the muhajireen and ansar exactly are the rightly guided. They don't innovate in the religion.

It is saudi's goverment celebrating their independent day, not the saudi's scholars those issuing fatwa that celebration of independent day and prophet maulud are bid'ah. It is not fair if syaikh hamza yusuf associate what goverment did with the fatwa of saudi scholars, because they are different person. The scholars said it is bid'ah, but the goverment did not follow the fatwa and still conduct the celebration.

+Ibrahima Welle Akhi, for the longest time, from my youth until my teenage, I have acquired my islamic teaching from a sect called the > ... they are basically a moderate level of .. they are people that consider that exist. Alhamdulillah, I left that group long time ago and found peace and tranquility in the methodology of the real sunnah, which is following the Qur'an and the Hadith. Ibrahima Welle We look down on people of innovation and label them for the benefit of warning other people. No one calls to Qur'an and Sunnah like the people of the Salafi da'wah, trust me. You may have heard some harsh brothers but I'll give you some names of students of knowledge who are of the Salafi Aqeedah:
Muhammad Tim Humble, Abu Usama Dhahabi, Abdul Rahman Hasan, Abu Taymiyyah
These guys speak well, and are only harsh towards innovation because they're firm upon the Qur'an and Sunnah
+Talal Siddiqui I listened to these people you have listed, they just enjoy refuting people for the sake of refuting but really there isn't much I learned from them, and if you pay close attention you'll see that they say things that are totally ignorant and blame it on mistakes especially Abou Usama. I listen to Mufti Menk most of the time he's got knowledge and is tolerant towards other people.

It is from our tradition also to refer back to the scholars.Most of the salafi don't even have a silsilah. A chain of teachers leading back to Rasulullah is the best. I disagree with him in regards to mawlid and bringing the issue of saudi celebrating the birtg of their nation but I still love this man because of the wisdom in his speech.

Also realize that many Muslims do NOT believe as you believe, that "sufism is the soul of Islam", but instead believe that sufism is a bid'ah, or a complete deviation. Calling Sh. Hamza a sufi & saying "be careful of him" implies these things & that's backbiting & slander. These people must be called out so they will think twice next time. Otherwise shaitan will keep our hearts divided.

I was talking about when seeking knowledge yet being wishy-washy about having to pay for classes or buying books etc. People are willing to pay for things related to worldly nafs but when it comes to the deen they get hesitant. That - what they're doing - is different. That is not an "annual" (recurring) celebration on a specific date, as تقرُّبًا إلى الله an act that they believe is a devotional, religious act of worship! THIS is what makes an act a Bid`ah (if it is baseless and has no proof from the Beloved Prophet & His Sahabah). ♦ But they are not seeking to come closer to God via that act, believing it to be a `Ibaadah or part of the Religion of Islam.

Praise be to Allaah the Lord of the Worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and all his family and companions.
The commands mentioned in the Qur’aan and Sunnah to follow the laws of Allaah and His Messenger, and the prohibitions on introducing innovations into the religion are quite clear. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say (O Muhammad to mankind): ‘If you (really) love Allaah, then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur’aan and the Sunnah), Allaah will love you and forgive you your sins’”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:31]
“Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord (the Qur’aan and Prophet Muhammad’s Sunnah), and follow not any Awliyaa’ (protectors and helpers who order you to associate partners in worship with Allaah), besides Him (Allaah). Little do you remember!”
[al-A’raaf 7:3]
“And verily, this is My straight path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His path”
[al-A’naam 6:153]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The most truthful of speech is the Book of Allaah and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, and the most evil of things are those which are newly-invented.” And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever innovates anything in this matter of ours (i.e., Islam), that is not part of it will have it rejected.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 2697; Muslim, no. 1718). According to a version narrated by Muslim, “Whoever doe anything that is not in accordance with this matter of ours (i.e., Islam), will have it rejected.”
Among the reprehensible innovations that people have invented is the celebration of the birthday of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in the month of Rabee’ al-Awwal. They celebrate this occasion in various ways:
Some of them simply make it an occasion to gather and read the story of the Mawlid, then they present speeches and qaseedahs (odes) for this occasion.
Some of them make food and sweets etc., and offer them to the people present.
Some of them hold these celebrations in the mosques, and some of them hold them in their houses.
Some people do not limit themselves to the actions mentioned above; they include in these gatherings haraam and reprehensible things, such as free mixing of men and women, dancing and singing, or committing actions of shirk such as seeking the help of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), calling upon him, seeking his support against their enemies and so on.
Whatever form it takes and whatever the intentions of those who do this are, there is no doubt whatsoever that it is an invented, haraam innovation which was introduced by the Shi’a Faatimids after the three best centuries, in order to corrupt the religion of the Muslims. The first person to do this after them was the king al-Muzaffar Abu Sa’eed Kawkaboori, the king of Irbil, at the end of the sixth century or the beginning of the seventh century AH, as was mentioned by the historians such as Ibn Khalkaan and others. Abu Shaamah said: the first person to do that in Mosul was Shaykh ‘Umar ibn Muhammad al-Malaa, one of the well-known righteous people. Then the ruler of Irbil and others followed his example.
Al-Haafiz Ibn Katheer said in al-Bidaayah wa’l-Nihaayah (13/137), in his biography of Abu Sa’eed Kazkaboori: “He used to observe the Mawlid in Rabee’ al-Awwal and hold a huge celebration on that occasion… some of those who were present at the feast of al-Muzaffar on some occasions of the Mawlid said that he used to offer in the feast five thousand grilled heads of sheep, ten thousand chickens and one hundred thousand large dishes, and thirty trays of sweets… he would let the Sufis sing from Zuhr until Fajr, and he himself would dance with them.”
Ibn Khalkaan said in Wafiyaat al-A’yaan(3/274): “When it is the first of Safar they decorate those domes with various kinds of fancy adornments, and in every dome there sits a group of singers and a group of puppeteers and players of musical instruments, and they do not leave any one of those domes without setting up a group (of performers) there.
The people give up work during this period, and they do no work except going around and watching the entertainment. When there are two days to go until the Mawlid, they bring out a large number of camels, cows and sheep, more than can be described, and they accompany them with all the drums, songs and musical instruments that they have, until they bring them to the square… On the night of the Mawlid there are performances of nasheed after Maghrib in the citadel.”
This is the origin of this celebration on the occasion of the Prophet’s birthday. More recently idle entertainment, extravagance, and wasting of money and time have become associated with an innovation for which Allaah has not sent down any authority.
What Muslims should do is to revive the Sunnah and put an end to bid’ah (innovation); they should not do any action until they know the ruling of Allaah concerning it.
Ruling on celebrating the Prophet’s birthday
Celebrating the occasion of the birthday of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is forbidden and is to be rejected for a number of reasons:
1 - it is not part of the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) or of the khaleefahs who succeeded him. Since this is the case, then it is a forbidden innovation, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I urge you to follow my Sunnah and the way of the rightly-guided khaleefahs after me; adhere to it and cling to it firmly. Beware of newly-invented things, for every newly-invented thing is an innovation (bid’ah) and every innovation is a going-astray.” (Narrated by Ahmad, 4/126; al-Tirmidhi no. 2676).
Celebrating the Mawlid is an innovation introduced by the Shi’a Faatimids after the three best centuries in order to corrupt the religion of the Muslims. If a person does anything in order to draw closer to Allaah which was not done by the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) or enjoined by him, and was not done by the khaleefahs who succeeded him, this action implies that he is accusing the Messenger of not explaining the religion to the people, and that he disbelieves in the words of Allaah (interpretation of the meaning):
“This day, I have perfected your religion for you”
[al-Maa'idah 5:3]
because he is adding something extra and claiming that it is a part of the religion, but the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not bring this.
2 - Celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is an imitation of the Christians, because they celebrate the birth of the Messiah (peace be upon him). Imitating them is extremely haraam. The hadeeth tells us that it is forbidden to imitate the kuffaar, and we are commanded to differ from them. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them” (narrated by Ahmad, 2/50; Abu Dawood, 4/314). And he said, “Be different from the mushrikeen” (narrated by Muslim, 1/222, no. 259) - especially with regard to things that are the symbols or rituals of their religion.
3 - Besides being bid’ah and an imitation of the Christians, both of which are haraam, celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is also a means that leads to exaggeration and excess in venerating him, which even goes as far as calling upon him (making du’aa’ to him) and seeking his help, instead of calling upon Allaah, as happens now among many of those who observe the bid’ah of the Mawlid, when they call upon the Messenger instead of Allaah, and ask him for support, and sing qaseedahs (odes) of shirk praising him, like Qaseedat al-Burdah etc. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade going to extremes in praising him, as he said: “Do not extol as the Christians extolled the son of Maryam. For I am just His slave, so say, the slave of Allaah and His Messenger” (narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4/142, no. 3445; al-Fath, 6/551), i.e., do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated in praising the Messiah and venerated him until they worshipped him instead of Allaah. Allaah forbade them to do that when he said (interpretation of the meaning):
“O people of the Scripture (Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allaah aught but the truth. The Messiah ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), was (no more than) a Messenger of Allaah and His Word, (“Be!” - and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit (Rooh) created by Him”
[al-Nisaa’ 4:171]
Our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade us to exaggerate concerning him lest the same thing happen to us as happened to them, so he said: “Beware of exaggeration, for those who came before you were destroyed because of exaggeration” (narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 5/268; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Nasaa’i, no. 2863).
4 - Observing the innovation of the Prophet’s birthday opens the door to other kinds of bid’ah and being distracted by them from the Sunnah. Hence you find that the innovators are very active when it comes to bid’ah and very lazy when it comes to the Sunnah..." Islamqa.com
Your task then is to prove that Hamza Yusuf follows that which contradicts Ahlul Sunna wal Jammah.
Not by simply calling him a Sufi. As we've discussed through messages, that is such a broad label covering a huge spectrum of philosophies, beliefs, and practices.
Nothing Shaykh Hamza Yusuf said in this lecture, or any that I've seen, contradicts the message of the hadith you keep bringing up.
How easily we use such words against Muslims shows how much we are lacking in Ilm of Deen.

Examples of good innovations: dots on the letters of the Quran (did not exist during the time of the prophet) celebrating the birth of the prophet peace be upon him (did not exist during his time) praying the taraweeh prayer in jama'a (during the time of the prophet until a period into the rule of Umar, people prayed taraweeh in small groups in the masjid and then one day Umar decided that it would be better to gather everyone together so that they all pray as one group. When he entered the mosque and saw the people praying together, as was not done during the time of the prophet, he explicitly said: what a good innovation!
The one who innovates a good thing in the religion will benefit from it and from those who follow that good innovation while the one who innovates a bad thing will inherit its sin and that of those who follow it, as per the saying of the prophet peace me upon him.
dot on the letters of the Quran is to facilitate correct reading of Quran, that is not bidae while moulid celebration is bidae as no khalifa celebrated it from four caliphs, as for tharawih as congregation prayer it was introduced by caliph Umer whom we have to follow as prophet asked us to follow the four caliphs, whatever the four caliphs have introduced has legal status in Islam
The Holy Prophet Peace Be Upon Him commanded us to follow His Sunnah and the Sunnah of the four rightly guided Caliphs RA so don't call their Sunnah a bidah.
