you're featured on Macrumors today too! "Jonathan over at TLD discovered a fairly significant discrepancy when benchmarking both MacBook Air models over the weekend. The 128GB Samsung SSD in his 11-inch Air was able to achieve 246 MB/s write and 264 MB/s read speeds. When he switched to the 13-inch model, however, speeds dropped to 156 MB/s and 208 MB/s, respectively, using that notebook's 128GB Toshiba SSD."- Macrumors. Keep up the good work!
I got a MacBook Pro with SSD factory fitted and I got the same Toshiba model number as you have here. My read speeds are around 230MB/s and write are around 170MB/s. I assume this is because they're using a slightly different drive - a 2.5-inch drive as opposed to bespoke memory modules in the MBA.
@melsjr I tried to today but they did not want to exchange it because it is not an official malfunction. The Apple employees never heard of this problem before.
I'm not interested in a new MB Air, since I ordered a MBP lately. But I just wanted to say this video is brilliant. Really informative and usefull! I just had to subscribe instantly, hoping you'll post even more of these fantastic tips.
There is a great thread on the apple discussions forum on this topic and one of the users dropped by the apple store and ran a few tests on both of the SSD's. Test - A .dmg file (3.74GB in size) copied from the Desktop to the Documents folder, same user Toshiba: 42 seconds Samsung: 27.9 seconds Here is the title of the thread: "Toshiba SSD vs Samsung SSD and inconsistent read/write speeds"
I just picked up an 11" yesterday, it has the Toshiba drive. Bought it from my college's computer store, wonder if they send Toshiba drives to 3rd party retailers and the Samsung drives to the apple store. I've had problems with bad hard drives from machines from a 3rd party retailer in the past.
Thanks for the very informative and very well made video Jonathan. Just received my MBA 11, 1.6 i5, 4 Gb RAM and 128 Gb SSD... and it's a Toshiba. Reading: 190 Writing: 210. Still love the MBA. Super fast and the from factor is amazing. The 2012 MBAs will be out in a "couple" of month and this will be all water next to a bridge. Let's enjoy what we have ;-) Keep the great vids coming Jonathan!
Aww yea, got the faster Samsung model. Really appreciate the info, I was just searching UA-cam and found your video. I'm very glad I don't have to get my machine exchanged now! FYI I have the 13" model with the 1.8 GHz i7 and a 256 GB SSD.
I have both previous and current MacBook Air, both 13" with 256GB of flash. The late 2010 model has the Toshiba while the early 2011 model has the Samsung. I can't tell by using it if one is faster than the other.
I've got an 11 incher, 128 GB model with the Toshiba drive. Bought in The Netherlands. Not particularly worried as I don't move files around all that much.
I have a question. A friend of mine said that the Toshiba would last longer because it's slower, hence having more durability. I doubt this claim, because it's a SSD so does the read/write speed affect the durability at all? If the Toshiba actually IS more durable, then I might as well just stick with the Toshiba SSD that I have right now, because I plan on having this MacBook Air for the next 5 years or so. If you could let me know about this soon, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
I suspect this is an SATA II vs SATA III issue with the Samsung models being SATA III vs SATA II for the Toshiba. If you look the "negotiated speed" in the demo was "3 Gigabit". I suspect that with the Samsung that would say something different given that the link speed is capable of "6 Gigabit". Maybe not, but that is a guess without having one in front of me. ;-)
I bought my 11" MBA 256 SSD i7 Last night at the apple store and ended up with the Toshiba model SSD. So I took it back today and ended up with the Samsung SSD :-) But I tested both editing a 1:30 min clip in iMovie. I even added 2 transitions and 2 titles. Both the Samsung and the Toshiba processed the clip in exactly 2 Minutes. When I did a speed test I got the exact same results you did with the Samsung and Write of 183 and Read 202 for the Toshiba. Thoughts? Comments?
Well i have the 13in base model with the fast samsung drive. so that's good. this would be pretty frustrating to know if i were still looking to buy one... or if i found i had the slower model. i wonder what apple was thinking?
Can anyone let me know which Apple Stores UK are allowing you to check before you buy? I went to my local authorised reseller and they would not let me open beforehand without a 15% restock fee. cheeky blighters Cheers
I have the 13 inch Macbook Air, and I am very happy to report I got the faster Samsung SSD. I would have been super bummed out if I had the slower type. And as an FYI I bought it from the Apple Store here in Canada.
Went to a couple of retailers in Sweden, this is the result: 1x 2011 11", 2x 2010 11" och 1x 2010 13". All of which had the TS128C. My theory is that they are using up their stock of old disks. And they wouldn't replace it if I got the slow disk.
@offlinerockstar so was it worth it to return you first macbook air? mine has the toshiba ssd but i don't really feel like going back to the apple store to exchange it
Hi! I have just bought a MBA 13" 128 gb. I can see that I've got the Toshiba model, and in this test it only scores 160 mb/s! :( Is there anything I can do about it? or is it just bad luck?? I'm really disappointed :(
@tldtoday This video was VERY helpful with the brands of SSD. Too bad we can't tell this just from looking at the box of a MacBook Air before we buy them.
I had purchased a Macbook Air just a few days ago and these were the specs: 13'' dual core i5 at 1.7GHz 4GB RAM 128GB SSD I GOT THE SAMSUNG MODEL!!! The laptop still feels slow when I open webpages, i am trying to open the VLC website and it won't come up. Any advice?
@MarqueIVv3 the size of the drive effects the write speeds and SSD's and HDD's work completely differently ... tbh idk why you mentioned HDD's and just like HDD's there are various SSD's ranging in price/performance but tbh this is built into the mac so you can't exactly upgrade easily want proof google c300 and look at the third option (hexus review) as i can't post a link
I just got my macbook air (first time user btw), and I have the Samsung. It was marketed as a 256 g drive, but it is reporting on my system as a 251 g. Which I am totally fine with! I just returned a dell ultrabook that came with a 212 g drive, of which only 187 g were available. It was the last straw for me, and I sent it back less than 8 hours after I got it. Ordered my macbook air the same day, and I am now a newbie Apple fan. I hope to convert to an Apple fan girlrl very soon.
Hey, Jonathan, I'm looking to get an iMac upgraded. So I went on Apple's website and customized it to my preference: 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB 1TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5 Apple Magic Mouse Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (English) Is any of this overkill?
They've been using different suppliers for SSD since the beginning... not really news. And the reason why I bought an SSD for my Macbook Pro separately. No such option for the air though.
@palishloko 11 or 13 are only different in size. If you get the same memory, SSD size and processor, they are otherwise identical performance-wise (the difference in TS vs SM aside anyway, which isn't determined by size, but luck.) You just get the bigger 13" screen with slightly higher res and the SD/MC slot. I was torn between the two, but opted for the 11". Was *definitely* the right choice, for size alone let alone weight, even over the 13"er.
Hey Jonathan...I got the 11" i7 and thankfully it came with the samsung (faster) ssd -- but I want more. This machine does have a 6gb sata chipset -- so are you seeing anyone that's selling 3rd party 6gb sata upgrade ssds for the airs yet? Post on twitter or reply if you have. I think photofast was selling them before.
@snoooters Honestly after running that one test it feels like I probably didnt need to worry about having the Toshiba drive. If a 1:30 minute video was done with both SSD's at exactly 2 minutes, then how much of a difference could it really make for even a 2 hour video clip? Now if I ran that test and I saw a 1 minute to 2 minute difference then I would have told everyone to hurry and exchange their MBA's if they got stuck with the Toshiba drive.
@Waysideprod You're comparing apples to bicycles. SSDs vs standard HDs. It has nothing to do with machine type, size, RAM, etc. It's the SSD that gives these great results. You'd have the same if you slapped a SSD in your machine.
@clemsontigers95 If you have a MacBook Pro, you almost certainly have a standard hard drive, not an SSD, especially as I'm not aware of Hitachi making SSDs for the consumer market.
@footballstar0214 you actually can change the SSD and i've opened up one of my macbook pro's and had to take it to an apple store at one stage and it was fine but yes I'm aware of the voided warranty you just have to put it back to normal when you take it to apple :)
I haf tested both 13 inch/ i7 / TS256C model ,and 13inch /i7 / SM 256C model with blackmagic. the Toshiba one, write speed scored around 180MB/s and read speed scored around 205MB/s. Samsung model : write speed around 250MB/s and read speed 265MB/s!
Nope mine is the 256GB 13" 1.7 i5 and I bought it in the apple store...but all the one's in store were 128GB with toshiba so I just drew the conclusion that the 128's were all alike. It seems though that some people with the 128 also have samsung so I am not sure why certain models have one or other. Apple should have just installed the Samsung in all Air's. It may be that they had some Samsung model SSD's leftover but switched to Toshiba due to the current legal standing w/ Apple and Samsung??
I got the Primo 2011 MBP 2.2ghz, 4gb ram, 1g graphic. i got these readings... Write 82.4 MB/s, Read 85.9 MB/s. i have only used about 220gb out of 750gb. should i upgrade to 8gb ram and a 7200 rpm HD? please tell me
Got the 11" air and it has the samsung drive in it. 128gb version. I also checked every macbook air in the store (about 12) and they all had the samsung SSD. I only checked about 5 of the 13" ones but they all had the Samsung
damn it, I just went to apple store and swapped the orginal Toshiba model with a new MBA. Apple staff told me that I can only swap once! I got no luck, still got the Toshiba model at second time. after i got home, i found out that theres a scratch on the brand new MBA!!! wtf
I ended up with the slower Toshiba SSD in my MacBook Air 11inch 128GB but my SO was luckier and her 13" inch MacBook Air 256GB tests at over 250 so it's obviously got the faster drive. To be honest in day to day use there doesn't seem to be a huge difference.
Just checked mine. I have the faster one! Thank god I don't have to go back to the apple store and exchange it! I also have the 1.8ghz core i7 model. 11 inches.
Im interested in purchasing the 13" Macbook Air with dual core i5 1.7GHz and 128GB SSD with 4GB of RAM. How can I know which SSD I am purchasing before I actually buy the product because I don't want to be stuck with a slower system when I can get a faster one for the same price...Can anyone help me with that?
@iAlqJr are u doing alot of serious video editing or anything so serious for it to require a faster ssd? im sure u were happy with it before u saw this and that shouldn't change. but ur right, im guessing they did this just incase they run in short supply. if one company has problems they'll have another one to back them up. thats my guess.

hey buddy, how can we know which one we get when we go to apple store? i don't know if those sales men at apple store knows the differences
@3doog if you're buying it from a store, you can ask them to check that for you. they have to tell you what they are selling to you.
Hey great video. I was wondering how I can tell which SSD I've got without opening the box?
Hey, May I know which hard drive speed software u used for ? I'm gonna test on my MBA..
Aww yea, got the faster Samsung model. Really appreciate the info, I was just searching UA-cam and found your video. I'm very glad I don't have to get my machine exchanged now!

@MarqueIVv3 Did you note that 11" has a 1.6 GHz processor while 13" has 1.7 GHz? I know that is not identicality.
If I got the TS on the 13", can i retrun it to get a faster one. And at the store, how can i know which SSD is in the Air?
Thank you for uploading this video. Just bought a MBA and expected to get it on Friday. Going to make sure I get the samsung ssd.
are the SSD sizes different? the larger the SSD the faster the read/write speeds are

Is there a way to check before buying then?
Would you have any idea if this would apply to the 2011 Macbook pros who opted for SSDs?
Mine has a Toshiba SSD =(

I belive it is depending more on what size you get on the ssd rader then if it is 13" or 11"
What if I'm using my Previous Generation Air with the Toshiba SSD does this also affect?
Did they use 2 manufacturers for all the ssd sizes or just the 128gb
and those with a 256GO what do you have a samsung or toshiba - just bought the 13'' i7 256GO hope i will get the samsung...
My original Macbook Air had a TS model, but after replacement of SSD because of kernel panic, I found Apple is so kind to give me SM model.
Bought mine from Leawood, KS and I got SM128C in my MBA 13".
what software did u use to test disk speed
how about the 2010 version. mine has the toshiba one. is there a samsung ssd card for the 2010 11" MBA
@offlinerockstar so was it worth it to return you first macbook air? mine has the toshiba ssd but i don't really feel like going back to the apple store to exchange it
How do u find out this before you buy one of these?
Hi!
I have just bought a MBA 13" 128 gb. I can see that I've got the Toshiba model, and in this test it only scores 160 mb/s! :(
Is there anything I can do about it? or is it just bad luck??
I'm really disappointed :(
Consistent with your findings, I have the Samsung SSD in my 11.6" CTO Core i7 1.8GHz.
I got a MBP 15" and it says APPLE SSD TS512C :(
Does that (i.e. SM or TS model) have an effect on MBP performance too ???
@3doog Not really but you can return it within 14 days to get a new one.
@tldtoday This video was VERY helpful with the brands of SSD. Too bad we can't tell this just from looking at the box of a MacBook Air before we buy them.
Hi Jonathan, I bought a 13" MacBook Air, 1.7 Ghz i5, 128 HD ... I have the Apple SSD 128C model, not Toshiba.
I had purchased a Macbook Air just a few days ago and these were the specs: 13'' dual core i5 at 1.7GHz 4GB RAM 128GB SSD
I GOT THE SAMSUNG MODEL!!! The laptop still feels slow when I open webpages, i am trying to open the VLC website and it won't come up. Any advice?
did u do a speed test video for the macbook pro 2011??
what is the name of the program and from which company?
Negotiated link speed 3Gbp/s that means the ssd is sata II right?
i have a mac air 11" with the TS064C SSD, is it good or bad?? i bought it on october 2011, is the i5 version
@MarqueIVv3 the size of the drive effects the write speeds and SSD's and HDD's work completely differently ... tbh idk why you mentioned HDD's and just like HDD's there are various SSD's ranging in price/performance but tbh this is built into the mac so you can't exactly upgrade easily
want proof google c300 and look at the third option (hexus review) as i can't post a link
Can i check what SSD I get before buying the MacBook air? Or maybe ask for the Samsung SSD?
I just got my macbook air (first time user btw), and I have the Samsung. It was marketed as a 256 g drive, but it is reporting on my system as a 251 g. Which I am totally fine with! I just returned a dell ultrabook that came with a 212 g drive, of which only 187 g were available. It was the last straw for me, and I sent it back less than 8 hours after I got it. Ordered my macbook air the same day, and I am now a newbie Apple fan. I hope to convert to an Apple fan girlrl very soon.
Thanks to Borg for introducing you!
Heart skipped a beat but relieved to find a SM128C in your new mac air 13"? :P
yayy!!
Hey, Jonathan, I'm looking to get an iMac upgraded. So I went on Apple's website and customized it to my preference:
3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
Apple Magic Mouse
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (English)
Is any of this overkill?
@MarqueIVv3 In that case you're right performance wise, apart from battery life. Bigger batteries in the 13"
Man, My 13" air is currently on its way in TN right now....Hope I get the Samsung. Would suck to know I paid the same price for an inferior ssd.
They are doing it with the LG vs Samsung screens for the Retina MBP. Not sure about the SSD.
Any idea on how much the TOSHIBA models costs compared to SAMSUNG?
Hey Jonathan...I got the 11" i7 and thankfully it came with the samsung (faster) ssd -- but I want more. This machine does have a 6gb sata chipset -- so are you seeing anyone that's selling 3rd party 6gb sata upgrade ssds for the airs yet? Post on twitter or reply if you have. I think photofast was selling them before.
do you think its weird for me to ask an apple employ to check to see if its the Samsung model in the macbook air when i go to there store
@snoooters Honestly after running that one test it feels like I probably didnt need to worry about having the Toshiba drive.
If a 1:30 minute video was done with both SSD's at exactly 2 minutes, then how much of a difference could it really make for even a 2 hour video clip?
Now if I ran that test and I saw a 1 minute to 2 minute difference then I would have told everyone to hurry and exchange their MBA's if they got stuck with the Toshiba drive.
how do i know which one i get before i buy a new air?
is this still relevant for the 2012 mba models?
@tldtoday - Well done dude, you deserve it! :D
TS128E :( will Apple replace this for a faster one? What do I ask them?
@Waysideprod You're comparing apples to bicycles. SSDs vs standard HDs. It has nothing to do with machine type, size, RAM, etc. It's the SSD that gives these great results. You'd have the same if you slapped a SSD in your machine.
Where can I download that hard drive speedtest?
@M3aaaqHD true. but to be honest, its not like anybody will be doing any heavy duty film editing or file transferring on the air....
If your going buy one how do u no which one aint the slower one?
How would the Seagate Hybrid drive do in this??
And is this the 11.6" or the 13.3" in this vid?? lol
@clemsontigers95 If you have a MacBook Pro, you almost certainly have a standard hard drive, not an SSD, especially as I'm not aware of Hitachi making SSDs for the consumer market.
Is there anyway to find out the SSD model before you actually buy it?
@Ad1Pur1 i am not sure now do you have the 11'' model or 13'' model ????
@footballstar0214 you actually can change the SSD and i've opened up one of my macbook pro's and had to take it to an apple store at one stage and it was fine but yes I'm aware of the voided warranty you just have to put it back to normal when you take it to apple :)
YES. I have the Samsung SSD on my 13' Macbook Air base model. Thanks for the info.
This sux. I ordered the fully loaded 13" model - should get it Wednesday, I guess I'll find out and will post for stats.
I haf tested both 13 inch/ i7 / TS256C model ,and 13inch /i7 / SM 256C model with blackmagic. the Toshiba one, write speed scored around 180MB/s and read speed scored around 205MB/s. Samsung model : write speed around 250MB/s and read speed 265MB/s!
@ESUNintel me too waiting for it -ordered the i7 online should get it next monday... finger crossed...
Does this effect macbook pros as well
Nope mine is the 256GB 13" 1.7 i5 and I bought it in the apple store...but all the one's in store were 128GB with toshiba so I just drew the conclusion that the 128's were all alike. @Luger718A1 Agreed, this is why I'm not even going to bother exchanging my 11" that came with the TS.
I got the Primo 2011 MBP 2.2ghz, 4gb ram, 1g graphic. i got these readings...
Write 82.4 MB/s, Read 85.9 MB/s. i have only used about 220gb out of 750gb. should i upgrade to 8gb ram and a 7200 rpm HD? please tell me
What program do u use to do the Disk Speed Tests?
Got the 11" air and it has the samsung drive in it. 128gb version. I also checked every macbook air in the store (about 12) and they all had the samsung SSD. I only checked about 5 of the 13" ones but they all had the Samsung
I have 11" model but with APPLE SSD SM064C is that good or bad
i have the late 2010 mba 13" and i have the ts model is that ok?
@MacinTechReviews the hybrid gets close to 120MB/s max seq read from what ive seen
damn it, I just went to apple store and swapped the orginal Toshiba model with a new MBA. Apple staff told me that I can only swap once! I got no luck, still got the Toshiba model at second time. after i got home, i found out that theres a scratch on the brand new MBA!!! wtf
