    My favorite is the Fender Princeton Reverb Silverface in the middle. I love the classic shiny metal with Green/Blue letters.

    I liked the first amp the best. The Alnico sounded warmer to me.
    Thanks for the comparison video..

    Great comparison. You captured the perfect Silverface and Blackface Fender sound and then showed what you can do with a 12-inch speaker and an Alnico Blue. This is probably the best comparison video I have seen for the Princeton Amps

    Great demo! I’ve been considering a Princeton and didn’t know which one. BTW, nice cable :).

    Actually I am impressed by the low end produced by the 10inch ceramic magnet speaker in the silverface model which was close to the 12inch alnico model. I really like the vibe of all the videos you did at Chuck Levin; I hope you will have some more!

    Number 2 seems to have the best of both worlds @ that setting, would like to hear them with a tube screamer, great video Mr. Tone King !!!

    Great demo. Love hearing the side by side comparisons. Gotta say I liked the Jensen the best but the Vox alnico was a very close second.

    I agree ... amp 1 to me was too thick/heavy though i didnt know it had a 12" in it ... amp 3 too trebley .... but the middle amp to me is the best of both worlds !!

    I like the first amp with the 12” Celestian Alnico Blue speaker the best because it had a fuller sound along with clarity.

    I've seen and heard comparisons (in other videos) of the 1st two amps ('65 reissue, and '68 reissue). Your video confirms that I prefer the '68 reissue (middle amp/silverface).

    The Celestion alnico had it all to my ears - Jensen was warm and balanced and middle Celestion warm but needed more bite. ALL 3 would look and sound beautiful in my garage...

    I have an old Vox ac30 with a pair of silver alnico speaker, and I love them, but... here the amp I prefer is the one in the middle, more "Fenderish" tone than the one on the left, more bass than the one on the right, for me is the one to choose

  • @trushack

    Probably number 1 the best, but I didn’t dislike any of them (I dig Princetons, so there you go!)

  • @BAMozzy69

    As you move from 1 to 3, you lose thickness but gain clarity. The third though was a bit too thin for my tastes and 1st too thick with the middle one giving a bit of depth but more clarity than the first. I wouldn't consider the 3rd but the first 2 could work for me in different settings. Would like to see how the 1st handles humbuckers and the guitars I play before I committed to either.
    Not in the market for a new amp atm as I have a Blackstar HT5R 210 and a Marshall JVM410 too

  • @jeremygoheen7023

    i liked the first and 2nd amp. feel like they would be better for a blues tone

  • @PicksPaints
    @PicksPaints 6 років тому +1

    To my ear, the AlNiCo had more pronounced mid-range, the ceramic had more top and bottom end. The Jensen sounded a little rounder in the mid and treble, but way less low end. They all sounded good, I prefer the AlNiCo as well.

  • @robbrady4649
    @robbrady4649 6 років тому

    I thought the Jensen sounded smoother, more rounded, but as you say very little bottom end. The celestion alnico version would be my second choice, a bolder bigger tone. By the way TK, are you planning to show us more of your guitar collection, as you did with your Charvels?

    Fender used to make amps like Zippo lighters.Back in the 80s,they made amps like Bics.Now Fender makes amps that make Bics look like Zippos.

    I should point out that the old silverface Fenders were considered fair crap in their day, with CBS modifications that reduced their original tone and quality. Does the "reissue" have a tube rectifier? And people are paying big money for 70s Fender guitars that were really sub-par, and that can't match up to a modern MIM.

  • @Turboy65
    @Turboy65 6 років тому

    For a clean tone, a silverface is always a good answer. It's the best answer if it's a silverface PRO REVERB with the ultralinear transformer and the 70 watt rating on the back panel.
    For an overdriven tone, the answer is a Randall Smith modded Princeton, AKA Mesa Boogie Mark I.

    Is the 1st amp a special order? Went to the Chuck Levin website and only saw a “faun” colored one with a 12” celestion greenback not the Alnico. Are black ones with Alnico available?

    None...because they’re all combos and I hate combos. But from of tone point of view, I like the silverface middle one.

    • @Wardell43
      @Wardell43 6 років тому

      You can always build or buy a head case and run it through the cabinet of your choice. I have a red knob The Twin that I built a cabinet for. Still heavier than hell, but I run it through a 212 Fender Baseman or a 412 Fender cab both loaded with Celestions.
      I'm sure Mojotone will sell a head case for any of those amps.

    • @Spidouz
      @Spidouz 6 років тому

      Prisoner Zero yeah, but the point of those amps is also the fact to be affordable and ready to be used. I’m not gonna spend money on a combo just to get the amp and then have to spend even more money to get a head case, and build a Frankenstein amp... I’m not interested in that. Waste of time and money for me. If Fender would make ahead, yeah that would be great and easy to add this kind of head to the collection... but if they don’t, I will pass... there’s many other amps on the market already. To each his own!

    I like the first one best very nice tone but ita probably necause ITS THE ONLY ONE WITH A 12 INCH SPEAKER IN IT lol I mean you guys shouldnt even compare it with 2 others that have 10s if they all had 12 inch speakers they would all probably have that warmth not a good comparison videos guys alot of people that know about amps will be able to pick that out nezt time if your going to do a comparison of different speakers in the samr type amp make sure its the same size speaker lol otherwise it just makes it so there is no co ntest the 12 eill be warmer amd depper thats just how it works and zi would of thiught you guys would of known that

    • @trushack
      @trushack 6 років тому

      It's a fair point, but I don't think it's out of bounds. It's ok to check out a 12" in a Princeton compared to the traditional 10" and see what you dig (I think Princeton-type amps with 12s are pretty awesome), isn't it?

    • @zplapplap
      @zplapplap 6 років тому +1

      Michael Ward I respectfully disagree, at least to the extent you think it’s not a meaningful comparison and therefore not a good comparison video. Here’s another way to look at it: If I’m shopping for a new Fender Princeton I would, evidently, have to choose between at least three versions of the current model. This comparison give some insight into the sonic qualities of one Princeton as directly compared to the others. If one has a 12” speaker, what impact might that have on the tone? One need not do an apples to apples comparison of only one size speaker to obtain meaningful information from the demo.
      Not trying to pick a fight. Your points are well stated. I’m simply offer a different viewpoint.

    I am NOT a particular fan of Ceramic Magnets in any Way, Shape, or Form, BUT, the Middle Combo sounded the Best.
    Now, that being said, as the guitarist said, this decision has been based on the fact that they were all set at the particular settings, and we, the audience, like the guitarist, NEED to hear them CrAnKeD Up in order to make a truly informed decision as to which is best.
    Needless to say, quite disappointed in the far Right amp.
    It was just too Bright. It had no Mid and No Bass. It's Gotta Go !
    I liked the First ones Clarity, but the Middle one just sounded a bit better, EVEN THOUGH it has a Ceramic Magnet.
    I suppose, what I am saying, is that I am Truly Disappointed in Celestion Blue AlNico V Speakers.
    A Better Challenge would have been the Celestion :
    Blue AlNico V,
    Red, and the
    Ceramic.
    All Fenders , with all Celestions !

    Fender is out of their frikken minds with the amount of money for their overhyped tube combos. The tube rubes really like payin alot. I'm so sick off that stupid vintage snoberry that justifies outrageous sums of cash being paid out to companies that rely on their customers ignorance.
