    Both gorgeous guitars. The PRS definitely sounds more refined and 'controllable'. Another interesting point is that around a minute of the video was spent in having to re-tune the LP. I love my Les Paul and wouldn't be parted from it for the world, but my PRS DGT is 99% of the way there and it's a joy to play. I'd go 594 based upon this video.

    Both sounded fizzy and cheap running through that marshall. I think that amp wasn't a good match for showing off these guitars. Great video as always tone king!

      100%. With that much gain and compression there’s no room for the pickups or any differences in design that would even affect tone to begin with to shine.

    The Les Paul through a Marshall definitely has the iconic gritty RnFR tone over the refined PRS. Both guitars sound great. I am sure the quality on the PRS is superb. Next shootout play the PRS through an Archon vs a Les Paul trough a Marshall. In this video wearing a GNR t-shirt and chucks..you gotta go with the LP.

    I love Gibson's and all my Heroes play Gibson but I bought a 594 instead. The Gibson tone is amazing but the quality, tuning stability and feel of the PRS was what convinced me to buy the PRS. You buy a Gibson for the heritage and because your idols had one, put up with the issues for the sake of that but you could buy the PRS and don't have those issues. The PRS is easier to live with...
    In other words, your heart says Gibson and your Head says PRS - which one you pick will probably be the one you listen to...

    I'm an old metalhead, so I rarely will ever say, "too much gain". But I gotta say, too much gain in this video. That gain was good for pushing out some meaty metal riffage; but these fellas were pulling on rhythmic rock, and it came out muddy.
    That said, I love LP's; but I'd get the 594 PRS. And that's because I just went through the process of this exact shootout via conducting a real purchase. I went into a room with an LP custom, and a PRS 594, and a 5150 amp. The PRS, with those pickup's that were made on the machine that wound the pickups that made LP's awesome in 59, it owned by PRS. And wow do they sound amazing. The PRS was the winner without hesitation. But that's not to take away from the LP. It was awesome, but the PRS just had everything in spades over the LP for me.
    However... My experience was splitting hairs, and only one could be chosen. No bad choice could been made. And my prize was, and is a dragon burst quilt top PRS 594. But if that LP Custom with hot rod flames is still around in a month or so...

    Similar but with some differences. The LP has a mid range bump in tone where the PRS seems more balanced. But I feel that both are great in their own right. They compliment each other. There are strengths of each that fills the gaps of the other.

  • @mdeerocks6792
    @mdeerocks6792 6 років тому +1

    They are both great guitars and sound much more similar than people who never owned both think - differences are very subtle and depend on the particular model of the Les Paul. Even PRS 594 can sound slightly different depending on particular guitar, but the differences are much smaller than Les Pauls. Bottom line - get both, but if you own a Les Paul you love, I'd have a look at PRS Custom 24 first.

  • @PdaMack
    @PdaMack 6 років тому +1

    I agree. If I was to acquire a PRS, it would be the custom 24. LP, Strat, 24 AND Tele & SG. All bases covered. As for the rest, it's all down to personal preference - Ibanez, Shecter, Kiesel, Jackson, Ltd etc

    Gibson and Fender have guitars that are known for their legendary sounds. Not many guitar makers can say that. PRS to me sound great, but they don't have a signature sound that is distinctive to me. Don't get me wrong I would love to have one however I would still want a Les Paul first.

    And there you have it. The LP doesn't stay in tune. The next thing is for the head stock to break because of the break angle. PRS
    addressed this issue by changing the head stock break angle. It stays in tune much longer.

    I buy my guitars from music stores, but never try to determine their sound at a store because the gear is all foreign. I can set them up to my preferences at home with nice heavy strings. Store strings are rusty angel hairs. If the guitars look cool and have no blems, the rest is a matter of TLC. They're both a couple of sweeties. Happy Jamming Louis!

    One thing I’d add to the “594” is like a modern LP: The new high performance LPs are a modern take on the classic LP. A lot of ppl don’t like the Gforce tuners but, other than that, I’d highly recommend ppl go that route if they want a more modern version.

  • @sowhat5150
    @sowhat5150 6 років тому

    Cool comparison but all the gain makes it hard to compare. I’ve heard many guitarists say “I can tell a good electric guitar by strumming it acoustically.” Should of strummed them acoustically, then play them clean, then with distortion. I’m waiting for the Suhr Aura. From the videos I’ve seen the Aura is pretty impressive.

    Well done. The LP really is course sounding in comparison. The PRS is very full and rich but the LP has a deeper argesive low end and is has a lot more balz. I have the poor mans PRS the SE 245 it really is scary close to it's more expensive brother. I also have a LP Special reissue that I had a PAF put into the neck position. They compare very simularly to your comparison. Which would I take. The LP I prefer the aggression of it!!!

    Well the McCarty is Paul’s tip of the hat to the LP with modern refinements & I do own a PRS but if I want that particular type of feel, a feel of raw power, I want a LP. If I want that modern feel that I’m not working quite as hard & can hear the articulation of each note, refined power of you will, then I want my CE24.

    Good shootout. Who reached for the tuner first? Build quality? Clean tones? Yes, i am a PRS fan boy but the sound was very similar. The PRS had a bit more definition and chunk vs. the Gibson seemed to drive the amp a little harder. Based on this, it all comes down to playability which i think the PRS would win. YMMV.

      I own a PRS Core McCarty 594. I did own a LP. The Lp Kicks the 594 in the butt and not in a pretty way when it comes to sound. Looking at some LP's online so I can send the PRS back. Only way I would keep it is if my tech tells me it really needed a super setup and I was not listening to what it can really do.

  • @brbuche
    @brbuche 6 років тому

    Hard to go wrong with either one. I do think the pickups make a slight difference that is important. you didn't say what pickups were in the Les Paul but some of that grit comes from the uneven winding in some of their burstbuckers PAF's. and the PRS LT is a low gain pickup so if you put that Gibson pickup in the PRS they would become even closer. the PRS has all the quality features that make it more player friendly as well. PRS better upper fret access, tuning stability(no 17 degree headstock) . very nearly perfect intonation. ergonomic cuts, probably overall lighter, friendlier to the back. I also seem to be able to set up the PRS with a lower action, not sure why but the Les Paul needs a slightly higher action very slightly. I have both of them, of course you have to have one of each.

  • @revelationsoundstudio
    @revelationsoundstudio 2 роки тому

    Both are great guitars. The PRS design is much better with an improve headstock with staying in tune on the G string, its not bottom heavy like the Les Paul and the access to the higher frets is better. Overall construction is better on the PRS and it does not have the thick tone of the Les Paul. The tone is more even. Better articulation in top end with a nice sparkle and the low notes are clear not muddy. However if you want the thicker tone and classic look, the new Les Paul's are better with quality control compared to before the buyout.

    Tonally the PRS was much fuller, even through the excessive distortion. Good thing you didn't do a QC check of the Gibson compared to the PRS. And the LP had to be retuned; slight tuning problems with the LPs. The LP would lose a comparison test with an SE.

    I own both, but my 594 is the double cut away. They are both beautiful and sound incredible. I think that my double cut away is a bit brighter than the single cut away 594. I hear more of a compressed sound making a chord sound like one note on the Les Paul and on my 594 I can hear the individual notes along with the full chord. I love my Les Paul, but my Paul Reed Smith McCarty 594 is my dream date that has turned into a life long passionate relationship. I agree with the others that there needed to be less overdrive in order to hear the guitars more unmasked or maybe some guitarists who are a bit more comfortable playing cleaner. Not that these two aren’t great players....just saying.

    Strictly speaking, if you want the Les Paul tone, you need a Les Paul. This is not to say the 594 having it's own tone is bad, because it's the opposite, they need to be distinguishable on their own or otherwise they are nothing more than a company making imitations.

    A Les Paul that can't stay in tune for more than 10 minutes? NEVER!

      Master Effects Pedals I have an epiphone les Paul standard, and a Gibson les Paul and I can assure you that both the epiphone and the Gibson can stay in tune for longer that 10 minutes. They actually stay in tune a lot more than people seem to think and I can say that from experience.

      So true, lack of tuning stability and poor quality control drove me away from Gibson and to PRS. I haven’t looked back.

      Greg S I can agree on the QC statement, PRS just seem to be a step above in Quality. Gibson’s plastic binding and trim doesn’t help here though.
      I call bullshit to anyone who says a Gibson won’t stay in tune as mine stays tuned for weeks. It sounds like people just don’t bother setting the strings up properly when their changed. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a quick re-string and hang back up in the shop.

    I like PRS the most (but I’m a PRS fan so I admit I’m biased). However, if I could only buy one, I would still buy a Gibson Les Paul instead. Why? Because from a collection point of view, everyone needs to own at least one Gibson Les Paul. Just like we need to own a PRS Custom 24/22 and a Fender Tele & Strat or a Gibson 355, etc... that’s just some “must have” models to me.

      I have a 1988 McCarty. Really great playing guitar. It's not a LP though. The 594 is closer but its still not an LP. I watched Page play his LP 59 in 1969 through a bank of Marshals and it was magical. It's hard to imagine another brand of guitar and amp with those iconic sounds.
      I met Les Paul years ago before he died. The man was brilliant as a designer and a player. He played a LP for most of his later life with no regrets. I respected his judgment. What would he say about the PRS were he alive today?? I would be curious to know!

    Well right off the bat after a few licks the LP had to be re-tuned ... that’s says enough..

    That amp sounds like a transistor radio so why waste your time and ours. Next time listen to the recording and make changes or adjustments as needed. If your going to do it do it right or why bother.

    Big surprise the Gibson wouldn't stay in tune...I had a custom shop 356 worth over $4900 and it wouldn't stay in tune...complete deal breaker...sold it for a PRS. And button your damn shirt Drew! J/K I've met Drew before, he's a stand up guy, and pretty damn funny

    The" les paul" is of course out of tune! The PRS has a better sound for a band situation ( my humble opinion) when you have to cut thought other instruments (better Mid Range) i own a Gibson flying V and a i had a LP , even lubricating the "nut" with graphite the result was disappointing , this includes my flying V. I don't want to sound like i'm trashing Gibson however this has been my experience.

    I can't hear the difference. Toss a coin when it comes to sound. Boils down to how you feel and what you feel when playing them. But what would I know, I'm the guy that picks a Tele over a Strat.
