The Monoprice 1w/5w Stage Right, and its big brother the 15w/1w 1x12 are spot on white label Fender Champ and Fender Deluxe Reverb with only perhaps a tube swap and a speaker upgrade keeping them from being ethereal. I got them on sake, and have less than $300 in some quality repros that Weber and Mojotone etc are selling for big bills. They use more modern electronics, you may find it desirable to swap tubes and re-bias the amp. I recommend pulling out the high power Super 8 and Seventy Eighty and replacing them with a Celestion Eight Fifteen and either an Alnico Blue or an Eminence Cannabis Rex. Better tubes are always good, but a speaker upgrade gives you the most noticeable move towards boutique Grade A amps while being significantly money ahead of buying or building a Champ or Deluxe Reverb clone. 10/10 would buy as many as I had room for if my wife wouldn't hide my body underneath them. If you can find these amps cheap, don't hesitate. They now sell a 30 watt all tube half stack that I believe is modeled on the Vox AC30 but haven't had the pleasure of checking out up close. TL;DR: Buy the Monoprice/Stage Right amps. They are faithful vintage Fender circuits.
They still use a tube in the power stage, they just have some solid state magic for the gain channels and voicings. So yes, we are technically both correct I think.
If you crank the clean channel you get nice tube crunch without diode clipping. It has op amp stages between input and the first tube gain stage and the phase inverter is ss, but otherwise it has 2 tube preamp gain stages and a push pull output tube design.
Many people don't even know how loud a real 5W tube amp can get. I got Marshall DSL5C combo and it's too loud for an apartment with 1W setting. Getting something bigger would be pretty nonsense because you will never use half of the power of the amp without being hated by the neighbours.
Bugera g5 is a great all tube cheap head. 5 watts you can turn down to 1 or .1 watt. Play through a 4x12 at small bars and still don't max it out. 2 channel, blend for American or British style gain.
The blackstar is badass, I had the ht metal 1 watt combo and it was killer. Now I had to manipulate things to bring a more powerful clean tone as for the amp was designed to be overdriven. Now with the emulated speaker output I would run it through a vintage organ speaker cab that was stocked with a jenson ps12 whizzer and the amp delivered my personal space needs for jamming and recording. I found mine at sweetwater for $189 shipping included during some silly sale but I had to online search a bit for that price.
Totally agree, that the micro dark may be more versatile than micro terror. I think both are amazing but the dark may give you more distortion just if you want it. Simple!

The Micro Terror has a well known problem with it, though - the power supply for it is 2-prong, and it isn't grounded, which means that you can plug it into a grounded outlet and get a ton of noise and 60hz hum, and there's nothing you can do about it short of running a wire from the ground at the outlet to the case of the amp. I love the sound of the microterror, and it worked fine at our home in Arizona, but our new place has "noisy" outlets, and we don't have a single outlet where the Micro Terror doesn't wind up with some bad 60hz hum at the speaker. If you get the Micro Terror make sure that you order from someplace that has good return policies.

Agreed, I've got a Micro Terror & Micro darknset up, with an A-B box going into a Marshall 4x12 in stereo set up. Terror Left Dark right. Can run independent or dual. Dual is LOUD!
Awesome demo! Gotta love Orange but the second one says "buy me" all over it, all sound awesome btw Hey Dan do you have any updates on the baroque fret file?
I have the Orange Micro Dark. It's a great little amp and has an FX loop the micro terror doesn't. It also acts as a DI I believe with cab sim out. (I would not recommend the 1x8 cab they pair with it though)
I have both the Joyo zoMBie and the Orange Micro Terror. Both are fun amps but I adore the zoMBie. I have the older model with a single bank of knobs. It's clean channel is super clean and the dirty channel is just awesome. I never played a real Dual Rectifier to compare it to, but it sounds great nonetheless. It's essentially a built in distortion pedal so you only get that one sound from it- but it's a glorious example of distortion. Add in the effects loop and bluetooth capability and it's bang for the buck is great. The Micro Terror is also fun, but it lacks a clean channel so with hot pick ups getting a truly clean sound is impossible. It also doesn't have an effects loop which puts it at a disadvantage to the zoMBie. That classic Orange crunch is there and it gets surprisingly loud for an amp barely larger than a pedal. Right now I have it paired with a little Orange cab with a 6" speaker and it's a great practice rig tucked in a corner. Between the two the zoMBie gets my vote though. Yeah it's only that one distortion sound built in, but the clean channel works with any pedals you want to throw at it. I even use it just to bluetooth to my phone for internet backing tracks when I am playing a different instrument or amp. I was tempted to just buy the whole line of BandAmps based on how much I like that zoMBie.
I made a finger jointed 1-12 combo cab with a vintage alnico with my Blackstar HT1 and put better tubes in it. It is amazing sounding for home and even gigs using a mike.
I have 2 peavey amps a classic vt and a classic vtx. Both of these amps are what we call hybrids now. They are both 212 and both rock. Of the amps on the video I really like the sound of the first 2.
Every small tube amp I tried sux, except for a one watt Blackstar. Unfortunately it had no effects loop. I now use Keeley Red Dirt Germanium in my chain with an EHX 44magnum for a simple nearly transparent power amp. I'm satisfied with this arrangement, even though I'm not running tubes. It's the rise of pedal technology that makes my resolve possible. Btw I bought a 1w Marshall head a year ago and didn't keep it long. It sucked more than any I've tried. What were they thinking with that irritating high treble gain?
Hybrid Schmybrid. I just want a tiny tube amp that sounds loud and full, even at very low volume. That second one might work for me. I wonder how it would sound through a pair of 15 inch JBL
Am I the only one who prefers power tube based hybrids compared the preamp based hybrids? No one uses that tech really anymore though. Great work as usual.
Awesome video, Dan. \m/ I didn’t know that biyang made guitar amps. They sounded pretty good. The joyo zombies and the orange micro terror sounds killer. I own an orange micro dark and it sounds awesome.
Would you consider doing a rundown similar to this but next stage along, ie the tiny terror series, dark terror, and any others that are pure tube with 15w or cut to 7w or anything suitable for home recording... I got the impression with this list its more aimed at tube sounding rehearsal. Many thanks.
Thank you for your videos! We have always played smaller venues, Clubs, bars, etc. We never mic our amps. It is not necessary, plus mic instraments muddy our vocals in the monitors. Why do you guys on videos always mic your amps. It does not give us a accurate review of the equipment since it is not how all the small venue bands in our area setup their equipment. Why would we want a 1 watt or 5 watt amp if we do not mic through the pa?
Good list. about the only suggestion for an add would be the Surprise Sound Lab Rock Block. The Bugera G5 is about the best value out there for the features (but they're cheating & have FETs in the signal chain providing some of the gain. But so are the Joyo amps). FYI.... the Wang amps are pronounced like "Wongs", ("ah" like a wah pedal). But I'm still gonna call Hotone a "Ho".
Nice video. But, if you went all the way to $299, why didn't you include the Stage Right 15 W combo with a 12 inch Celestion speaker, 3 12AX7s and 2 EL84s, attenuator, effects loop, actual spring reverb, and 3 band EQ? It's cheaper than $299 and often goes on sale for well under $200.

The vox av15 is around £150 so maybe $175 but is valve and solid state hybrid and it a has a 12ax7 tube for the pre amp and power amp and is a great amp when plugged into an extension cabinet
the tube in that one is actually after all the processing, just to pretend its a tube amp. ive swapped to 12at7, 12ay7, 5751 and 12ax7. none changed the distortion amount whatsoever. it bummed me out.
I don’t think I’m old enough to consider myself a ‘purist’, and therefore I don’t care what’s in the amp, as long as it has a tube tone. I must admit that play through an authentic tube is a unique experience though.
Yo Dan. I have a question. I like the Moore Little Monster AC but how are you using it when they are 220v with a European power cord? Everyone that I have seen for sale is the same and cannot be used in the US. How are you using it? I would appreciate your answer. Thanks. Dave Thanks
@@aedanhickey5264 you could but what works on guitar doesnt always work on bass. You also need more power because bass has a lower frequency range and is therefore alot softer than guitar

The wangs was a cool little thing man....but you can reign in you're high watter though....and some godly noise suppressors again...and I want to clip v1 more not v2...you should actually have extra stage for more recovery... realistically all the gain its probably 13 or 14....
I own both the Joyo Atomic and the Micro Terror. While I love the Terror for it's distorted tones I find it hard to dial it in at a low home-use volume. Also it the lack of a fx-loop is a shame. So I tend to use the Atomic more often. Fx-loop, crystal clean sounds, imo easier to dial in at low volumes and it also gets along with my tubescreamer quite will. What more do you want? :D
Also after your video on cheap IEMs I got myself the KZ ZSNs and I really like them for everyday use as well as for band practice. Thx for your videos!
The thing that gets me when people talk about fx-loops as being important is to question if they really are that important. A lot of great music has been made where the reverb is run straight into the front of the amp and a lot of classic drippy surf tones are got that way. If you’re into zeppelin the it’s all in the front. Sometimes I ask is it worth the hassle of messing around with extra cables when you could just plug it all in an play.
I decided to get a smaller amp for my studio instead of using my JCM800. I got the Blackstar ID260 2X12 combo. Its not a real valve amp, but let me tell you. This thing is smokin in its sound and able to stand on its own live as well. So pedal friendly and running pedals in the effects loop is a dream. I had to pay an Extra $95.00 for the foot controller and well worth it. So under $700.00US I got a complete usable studio and live gigable amp that can match so many sweet bands I love sounding just like them on the albums with my pedal board. Now I was wondering about that Joyo Tube head that is the larger brother to these. If you ever get a chance do a video on that . I would love to know your thoughts. Its small enough for my studio and I was thinking of getting that a little later. I heard it was a good one and you can switch out tubes for other brands? Spend less on guitar gear leaves more for ammo😁
Am I the only one who prefers power tube based hybrids compared the preamp based hybrids? No one uses that tech really anymore though. Great work as usual.
What 1x12 are you plugging these amps into? Sounds great!
It's gotten so hard to get through a UA-cam video nowadays.
Awesome video, Dan. \m/ I didn’t know that biyang made guitar amps. They sounded pretty good. The joyo zombies and the orange micro terror sounds killer. I own an orange micro dark and it sounds awesome.
HEY WHAT ABOUT THE ROLAND CUBE I REALY LIKE THE 20GX AND THE MINI CUBE VERY AFFORDABLE WITH GREAT EFFECTS
I bought the Joyo Meteor and it sounds awesome through my Harley Benton G112.
Would you consider doing a rundown similar to this but next stage along, ie the tiny terror series, dark terror, and any others that are pure tube with 15w or cut to 7w or anything suitable for home recording... I got the impression with this list its more aimed at tube sounding rehearsal.
Many thanks.
Stage right 30 watt. channel switching plus reverb
You should have made a note that the micro terror is a hybrid rather than a full tube amp.
Awesome video it helps a lot (you have the best content on youtube by now) keep it like that dan
I like the VHT special 6
Good list. about the only suggestion for an add would be the Surprise Sound Lab Rock Block.
What do you think about the Hotone Nano Legacy series? I know it's not tube, but they're very cheap too. The new Nano Legacy Floor looks awesome.
Do is it a must to play it in a cabs ?? Or you can just plugs in and play ?
Which one would you recommend for worship music? For church stuff? Great video by the way!!
I bought a micro terror with the 10” mini cab and it is fun and loud! I don’t know if the micro dark is the better choice though...
Excellent video! I think I'd have to go with the orange though. You don't look like you have much of a Pickle going on like the other Rockers, you should stick some rolled-up socks in your pocket...lol
HT-1 is the only amp I have played for over a year
There is no other tone😆I just subscribed..I have 2 les Paul’s, three custom telecasters, a 69 fender bassman head.and a Marshall Jcm 800 combo.also a sig SAUGER m400 Vtac an hk vp 9 standard and sk and hk usp 45. What’s not to love about it.✌️🇺🇸🎸🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Awesome as always Dan, keep at it!
Great video man I have the micro terror and love it that mooer sounded great tho also I gotta agree on blackstar being awesome I got the ht 60 stage amp from blackstar for giging and it is amazing
this was a great video.....
hey wait, what is that in my notifications feed right now? a part 2? Yay cool!!
I owned the little Orange. I just coudn't dial out the ear fatigue I was getting from it.
Try a WANGS.
@@michaelb.42112 did you come from a Darell video lmao
@@danisventura6258 I don't know who that is. I own an Ibanez TS15H & cab. It's killer, but want to get a Wangs. The JOYO's look SWEET, too.
I have a VOX NT 15..Great amp
I don’t think I’m old enough to consider myself a ‘purist’, and therefore I don’t care what’s in the amp, as long as it has a tube tone. I must admit that play through an authentic tube is a unique experience though.
Hi! Since you mentioned a good cable in less budget... Can you suggest a good patch cable in also less budget?
Yo Dan. I have a question. I like the Moore Little Monster AC but how are you using it when they are 220v with a European power cord? Everyone that I have seen for sale is the same and cannot be used in the US. How are you using it? I would appreciate your answer.
Thanks.
Dave
Thanks
They sell different versions, you just need to find the American 120v version.
can you do a similar video for bass amps?
I know you can’t try everything, but what about the Kustom Defender 5H?
Anybody else wondering about how bass sounds on these things
I would love to know if I can play my bass on these or if he will do a bass amp video as well.
Technically can't you play bass on all of these heads just run them into a bass cab?
@@aedanhickey5264 you could but what works on guitar doesnt always work on bass. You also need more power because bass has a lower frequency range and is therefore alot softer than guitar
Oh okay
My bass sounds like ass through the micro terror
Love this video. I have an old Peavy cabinet that needs an amp.
Know what I’m doing now.
Thanks, Dan!!!
Great shootout, thank you for this informative no-nonsense video :-)
....so what do you guys think about dropping a celestion vintage 12 into a custom cab and just buying a bunch of cheap heads to play around with?
i already got a mesa boogie express 5:50 and a H&K tubemeister but have been thinking of the above just to play around a bit, should be pretty cheap to get going.
No micro dark ! it's the hi gain version compared to the terrors more vintage voicing.
does the joyo works by itself? , do i have to plug it to an amp to work?
The wangs was a cool little thing man....but you can reign in you're high watter though....and some godly noise suppressors again...and I want to clip v1 more not v2...you should actually have extra stage for more recovery... realistically all the gain its probably 13 or 14....
Great video man!!! Thumbs up
I own both the Joyo Atomic and the Micro Terror.
Sometimes I ask is it worth the hassle of messing around with extra cables when you could just plug it all in an play.
budget... 2007 I bought ENGL Fireball60 for 680Eu.... IRonball costs 780... Hm...Inflation...
Check out the VOX Cambridge 50
JOYO JMA-15 MJOLNIR All Tube Dual Channel 15 Watt Guitar
Maybe you should line up some solid state in same format..
Honest question here. In a world where cheap to decent tube amps have become quite affordable: why would you settle for a solid state? Buying a solid state amp is either a) even cheaper (but still sounds probably worse) or b) it has much more features. To each their own I guess.
Huge work man!
